TROY - Gwendolyn Hope Howell Hodge, 86, of Autumn Care of Biscoe, formerly of 736 Page St., Troy, died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, at Autumn Care.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Raleigh Castelloe officiating. Burial will be in Southside Cemetery.

She was a native of Troy, the widow of John E. Hodge, the first woman deaconess in her church, where she was also a member of the adult choir, WMU and the Fidelis Sunday School class. She was a charter member of the Troy Woman's Club, a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and retired from public education as an assistant to the superintendent of schools.

Surviving are daughter, Debby H. Barden of Troy; sons, Claude Howell of Spartanburg, S.C., John E. Hodge Jr. of Charlotte; stepdaughter, Carolyn McClellan of Concord; sisters, Faith Bruner of Clemson, S.C., Charity Beck of Morehead City, Joyce McCall of Troy, Nancy D'Ambrosio of Springfield, Va.; one grandchild; three stepgrandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, Troy, 7-9 p.m. Friday, other times at the home of Debby H. Barden, 629 Biscoe Road, Troy.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Troy, 401 E. Main St., Troy, N.C. 27371.

Clarice Spinks
SILER CITY - Clarice Spinks, 82, of 3376 Old Coleridge Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Cox's Chapel United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Roger Green officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County and a homemaker.

Surviving are brothers, William Penn Spinks of Asheboro, Albert Spinks of Ramseur.

The family will be at the church 10:30-11 a.m. Saturday, prior to the service.

Hodges Funeral Service, Ashe-boro, is in charge of arrangements.

Cindy G. Gray
BENNETT - Dorothy Elizabeth "Cindy" Garner Gray, 77, of Goldston, died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at Central Carolina Hospital, Sanford.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jeff Moran officiating.

She was a native of Moore County and an actress under contract to Universal and MGM Studios in Hollywood many years ago.

Surviving are daughter, Cathy Jo Hussey of Bennett; brothers, Neal Garner and Joel Garner, both of Trinity; two grandchildren.

The family will be at the church immediately following the service.

Joyce-Brady Funeral Home, Bennett, is in charge of arrangements.

Boyd N. Marsh
CARTHAGE - Boyd N. Marsh, 72, of 536 Kelly Road, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Emmanuel Baptist Church, where he was a charter member, with Pastor Eugene Ussery and the Rev. Ray Franklin officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Lee County, retired from A&P Grocers where he was a produce manager for 38 years, and had worked in produce at Piggly Wiggly in Sanford. He was a trustee, deacon, Sunday School teacher and choir director at his church. He was a singer, and a former member of Red Branch Baptist Church where he served as chairman of the deacons, choir director and Sunday School teacher.

Surviving are wife, Vallie Mae Marsh; son, LaVern Marsh of Carthage; daughters, Portia M. Cummings of Vass, Vanessa Lindley of Carthage; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

Fry & Prickett Funeral Home, Carthage, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to Emmanuel Baptist Church Building Fund, 632 McCrimmon Road, Carthage, N.C. 28327.

Easter F. Hopkins
ASHEBORO - Easter Foley Hopkins, 94, of 514 Vision Drive, Asheboro, formerly of Old Lexington Road, died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with Elder W.M. Freeman officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Shepherd Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.

She was a native of Bassett, Va., the widow of John Ed Hopkins, retired from Commonwealth Hosiery Inc., and a member of Mt. Shepherd Primitive Baptist Church.

Surviving are sons, Cecil Hopkins of Ramseur, Joseph E. Hopkins of Randleman; daughters, Ruth Smith of Randleman, Iris Hinshaw of Climax, Elvin Gregson of Ferrum, Va.; sisters, Beadie Bowman of Nottingham, Pa., Estelle Rorrer of Stuart, Va.; 19 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 6-8 p.m. Saturday, other times at the home of Ruth Smith, 399 McCollum St., Randleman.

Alfred D. McMasters
RAMSEUR - Alfred "Toot" D. McMasters, 70, of 2050 Welborn Circle, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at Randolph Hospital, Asheboro.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Loflin Funeral Home with the Rev. Eddie Hill and the Rev. Danny Jarrell officiating. Burial will be at White's Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County and retired from Tom Hill Furniture Co.

Surviving are wife, Lucille Reaves McMasters of the home; sons, Alfred D. McMasters Jr. of Asheboro; daughters, Glenda McCoy of Ramseur, Kathy Staples of Franklinville and Sharon Staples of Asheboro; brothers, Howard L. McMasters of Burlington, Dwight McMasters of Charlotte; sisters, Evelyn Light of Liberty and Peggy Parrish of Lexington; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home from 7-9 p.m. Sunday.

JULIAN - Howard K. Barker, 77, of 7196 Bobby Jean Road, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Gilmore Memorial Park.

James A. Hawks
ARARAT - James Arthur Hawks, 70, of 113 Hazy Grove Way, died Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, at his home.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Moody Funeral Home, Mt. Airy, with the Rev. Clayton Tilley officiating. Burial will be in the Susie Hawks Cemetery.

He was a native of Carroll County and the widower of Hattie L. Potts. He was retired from Wayne Farms and was of the Primitive Baptist faith.

Surviving are daughter, Phyllis Hicks of Asheboro; son, Gary Hawks of the home; sisters, Retha Hawks of Cana and Iva Kidd of Martinsville.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Sunday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Surry County, 1326 N. Main Street, Mt. Airy, N.C. 27030.

Floyd P. Hussey
ROBBINS - Floyd Pervie Hussey, 91, of 2891 N.C. 705, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, at Pinelake Health and Rehab Center.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Smyrna United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Joseph Forbes officiating. Burial will be in the church Cemetery, with Masonic Rites.

He was a native of Moore County and was retired from Perdue Inc. He was a member of Elise Lodge #555 A.F. & A.M.

Surviving is wife, Edith Garner Hussey of the home.

The family will be at Kennedy Funeral Home, Robbins, 6-8 p.m. Tuesday.

Stella B. Blake
TROY - Stella Britt Blake, 91, of 525 Albemarle Road, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at Autumn Care of Biscoe.

Interment of cremains will be 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in Southside Cemetery. Memorial service will be 1 p.m. at Troy Presbyterian Church, where she was the eldest member, with the Rev. Ray Lammers officiating.

She was a native of Montgomery County and a retired textile worker.

Surviving are daughters, Phyllis Cannon of Hickory, Mary Hurley of Troy and Ann Howell of Norwood.

The family will be at the church Tuesday following the memorial service, other times at the home of Mary Hurley, 504 E. Main St., Troy.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Troy Presbyterian Church, 202 E. Main St., Troy, N.C. 27371.

Pugh Funeral Home, Troy, is in charge of arrangements.

Minnie V. Beane
RANDLEMAN - Minnie Vestal Beane, 92, formerly of Randleman, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, at SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Pugh Funeral Home, Randleman, with the Rev. Alvin C. Newcomb and the Rev. Alley Camp officiating. Burial will be in Center Cross Baptist Church Cemetery, Seagrove.

She was a native of Moore County, a member of First Wesleyan Church and a homemaker.

Surviving are sons, Junior Vestal of Sophia, Winfred Vestal of Randleman, Buck Vestal of Jefferson; daughter, Edith Vestal of Franklinville; stepsons, Robert Beane, Calvin Beane, both of Randleman; stepdaughters, Clara Mae Harvell of Badin Lake, Inez Camp of Randleman, Marie Jennings of Greensboro; 12 grandchildren; 31 stepgrandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home of Junior Vestal, 4601 Allen Drive, Sophia, or Sandy Beckham, 518 Worthville St., Randleman.

Mary L. McAllister
SOPHIA - Mary Louise Lamb McAllister, 80, of 4540 U.S. 311, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, at her home.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Randolph Memorial Park, with the Rev. Tim Pheagin and the Rev. David McCauley officiating.

She was a native of Randolph County, a member of New Salem United Methodist Church and employed with Laughlin Hosiery Mill in Randleman.

Surviving are husband, F.M. McAllister of Sophia; son, Steve Gnida of Grays Chapel; sister, Essie Frazier of Randleman; two grandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Randleman, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, other times at 2310 Ford Place, Greensboro.

Claude W. Gregson
PLEASANT GARDEN - Claude "Wilford" Gregson, 79, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral and celebration of life service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bethlehem United Methodist Church, where he was a member. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Providence Township, a 1941 graduate of Providence High School, a well driller and the founder of Gregson Pump Service. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and a member of the Christian Friendship Sunday School Class.

Surviving are wife, Chloe Routh Gregson; daughter, Ann Ingram; son, Jerry Gregson; three grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

Pugh Funeral Home, Randleman, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to Bethlehem United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 56, Climax, N.C. 27233, a local Humane Society, or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Anna C. Young
DENTON - Anna Caitlyn Young, 8, of U.S. 109 South, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, at her home.

Funeral service will be 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Central United Methodist Church, with Dr. Mike Leatherwood, the Rev. Dan Money and the Rev. Joe Collins officiating. Burial will be in Clear Springs United Methodist Church Cemetery.

She was a native of Forsyth County, a student at South Lexington/Developmental Center and was a member of the Clear Springs and Siloam United Methodist Charge.

Surviving are parents, the Rev. Charles S. "Sandy" Young and Kelly Morris Young of the home; brother, Charlie Young of the home; sister, Megan Young of the home; grandparents, Helen V. Young of Lexington, Harry and Hazel Hartley of Welcome.

The family will be at Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home.

LEXINGTON - Rachel L. Richardson, 80, of Brookstone Retirement Center, formerly of Albemarle, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

She was a native of Randolph County and was retired from Mar-Mac Hosiery Mill.

Surviving are daughters, Hilda Harmon Hill of Asheboro, Sarah Richardson Edwards of Thomasville; sisters, Mary Wade Shillings of Randleman, Virginia Mae Foley of Florida and Ollie May Holder of Siler City; brother, Arthur T. Loflin of Asheboro; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.

William F. Collins
SILER CITY - William F. "Bill" Collins, 82, of 911 Woodland Drive, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, at his home.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Siler City Presbyterian Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Bill Carmines officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Vernon Springs Presbyterian Cemetery.

He was a native of Halifax County, owner-operator of Bill's Motor Inn, the widow of Dorothy Vann Collins and a member of the Siler City Town Board.

Surviving are daughter, Pat C. Perry of Siler City; brother, Payne Collins of Siler City; one grandaughter; two great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, other times at the home.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Bennett Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Tim Strider officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Moore County and retired from Acme-McCrary Corp.

Surviving is brother, Leland McNeill of Robbins.

The family will be at Joyce-Brady Funeral Home, Bennett, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.

MORGANTON - Ruby B. Parks, 81, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Carolyn Parks in Lenoir.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sossoman Funeral Home, Morganton, with the Rev. John Jernigan officiating. Burial will be in Burke Memorial Park.

She was a native of Burke County, the widow of Ben Parks, a retired employee of Western Carolina Center, and a member of First United Methodist Church.

Surviving are son, Victor Parks of Asheboro, Alan Parks of Lenoir; sisters, Betty Seagle and Norma "Sug" Rector, both of Morganton.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home of Alan Parks, 1106 Applegate Court, Lenoir.
