RANDLEMAN - Michael Ray Bowman, 44, of 1234 Loara St., Anaheim, Calif., formerly of Randleman, died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002, at Anaheim Memorial Hospital.

Graveside service will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Marlboro Friends Meeting Cemetery, with the Rev. Don Ashley officiating.

He was a native of Randolph County, attended Randleman High School, was employed as manager of Garden Court Apartments in Anaheim and had received a CAM degree in apartment management.

Surviving are wife, Candy Matucci Bowman; son, Nicholas Bowman of Anaheim, Calif.; sisters, Debbie Crutchfield of Liberty, Teresa Pugh and Rhonda Ratcliffe, both of Asheboro, Vicky Foster of Randleman; brothers, Tim Bowman of Asheboro, Ricky Bowman of Randleman.

The family will be at Marlboro Friends Meeting 3-4 p.m. Thursday.

Pugh Funeral Home, Randleman, is in charge of arrangements.

Kathleen R. Kennedy
ROBBINS - Kathleen Rowell Kennedy, 87, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, at Autumn Care of Biscoe.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Tabernacle United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Larry Higgins and the Rev. David Beck officiating. Burial will be in Pine Rest Cemetery.

She was a native of Union County, the widow of Edgar C. Kennedy, a charter member of Robbins Chapter #283, Order of the Eastern Star, a former member of the United Methodist Women and a retired employee of Southern Garment Co.

Surviving are sons, Larry Kennedy of Star, Clifford Kennedy of Burlington, Garry Kennedy of Lumberton and Carlton Kennedy of Robbins; daughter, Kathy K. Reynolds of Candor; sisters, Thelma R. Ferrell of Sanford, Dorothy R. Gilmore of Durham and Jennie Mae Medlin of Surf City; brother, L.A. Rowell Jr. of Boiling Springs, S.C.; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Kennedy Funeral Home, Robbins, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, other times at the home of Carlton Kennedy, 456 S. Emma Lane, Robbins.

Josephine B. Stuart
Mt. GILEAD - Josephine Brookshire Stuart, 71, of N.C. 731 West, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at Autumn Care in Biscoe.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Little River United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Max Wood and the Rev. Jim Short officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Montgomery County and a retired nurse's aid.

Surviving are husband, Lindberg Stuart; sons, Steve Stuart of Rose Hill, Edd Stuart and Billy Stuart, both of Candor; sisters, Edith East of Mt. Gilead, Mary Dennis of Randleman, Janice Voncannon of Troy; brothers, Bill Brookshire of Ellerbe and Rush Brookshire of Mt. Gilead; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Briggs Funeral Home, Candor, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, other times at the home of Edith and Farley East, Bowles Road, Mt. Gilead.

Cassie W. Carter
PINETOWN - Cassie Leona Webster Carter, 91, of 4999 Free Union Church Road, formerly of Robbins, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, at Beaufort County Hospital, Washington.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Free Union Original Free Will Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Harold Swinson officiating. Burial will be in Pine Rest Cemetery, Robbins.

She was a native of Beaufort County, graduated from Bath School and the widower of William Graham Carter Jr. She was a homemaker, employed with Robbins Mill and attended Elise Presbyterian Church, Robbins.

Surviving are daughters, Bessie Ann Carter Watson of Pinetown and Margaret Lou Carter Thomas of Charlotte; brothers, John Webster and Carl Webster, both of Pinetown; sister, Athaleen W. Bayzemore of Portsmouth, Va.; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Paul Funeral Home, Washington, 7-9 p.m. tonight, other times at the home of Bessie Ann Watson, 4999 Free Union Church Road, Pinetown.

Mrs. Carter will lie-in-state at Free Union Original Free Will Baptist Church from 9 a.m. Thursday until the funeral hour.

Charles G. Bossong
ASHEBORO - Charles George Bossong, 96, of Asheboro, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, at his home.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with Dr. Boyd Stokes and the Rev. Martha Welch officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.

He was a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., the widower of Gladys Julian Bossong, a graduate of Philadelphia Textile School and founder of Bossong Hosiery Mills in 1927. He was a past president of Asheboro Chamber of Commerce, one of the organizers and the first president of Asheboro Country Club, served as a member, director and secretary of Randolph Hospital, a member of Asheboro's Wachovia Bank Board of Directors and a member of the Joint Civilian Orientation Conference, which was sponsored by the Department of Defense.

Surviving are sons, Charles Julian Bossong and Joseph Culverhouse Bossong, both of Asheboro; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 6-8 p.m. Thursday.

Herman H. Humble
ASHEBORO - Herman Herbert Humble, 86, of Hub Morris Road, Randleman, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, at Asheboro Health & Rehabilitation.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Randolph Memorial Park, with the Rev. William Christopher Thore officiating.

He was a native of Randolph County, a World War II U.S. Army veteran and a retired construction worker and farmer.

Surviving are daughter, Joyce H. Russell of Asheboro; son, Jimmy Humble of Asheboro; sister, Francis H. York of High Point; brothers, Eugene Humble of Greensboro, Howard Humble of Enterprise, Ala.; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 6-8 p.m. Thursday.

Robert L. Ferree
RANDLEMAN - Robert Leroy Ferree, 63, of 835 Stout Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Harshaw Grove Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. William Roseman Sr. officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, a line supervisor at Kayser-Roth Hosiery in Asheboro, a U.S. Army veteran and a member of the male chorus and the gospel chorus at his church.

Surviving are wife, Cheryl Barbee Ferree of the home; sons, Robert L. Ferree of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., William Michael Ferree of Randleman; daughter, Lezlie Ferree of Anchorage, Alaska; stepchildren, Gayle L. Allen and Lonnie G. Allen, both of Durham; sisters, Betty Sue Gant and Dorothy Goldston; five grandchildren.

The family will be at the church 1 p.m. Saturday, other times at the home of Betty Gant, 623 Stout Road.

MT. GILEAD - Louang Douangkham, 85, of 113 McRae Circle, Samthong Village, Wadeville, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at his home.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Harris Funeral Home, Mt. Gilead. Burial will be in Stanly Gardens of Memory, Albemarle.

A sit-in from noon-2 p.m. will be held Thursday at Harris Funeral Home. A sit-in will also be held Friday, but the times were not available.

Everett L. Price Sr.
SILER CITY - Everett L. Price Sr., 76, of 15601 SW 137th Ave., Miami, Fla., died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at Baptist Hospital, Miami, Fla.

Funeral service will be noon Friday at Gees Grove A.M.E. Zion Church, with the Rev. Allan Moore officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a retired U.S. Army veteran of 26 years.

Surviving are sons, Everett Price Jr. of Miami, Fla., Walter Price of Rochester, N.Y.; sisters, Clara Elder and Lillian Jones, both of Dayton, Ohio, Celestine Price of Siler City; brother, Sylvester Price of Siler City; two grandchildren.

The family will be at the church 11 a.m.-noon Friday.

Farrar Funeral Service, Siler City, is in charge of arrangements.

Bill Cox
EUSTIS, Fla. - George William "Bill" Cox, 78, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at Oakwood Center, Eustis, Fla.

Graveside memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Oaklawn Cemetery, with the Rev. Johnny R. Henderson officiating.

He was a native of Randolph County, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, a past member of Cross Road Baptist Church, a salesman and a former manager of Enterprise Oil.

Surviving are daughters, Delores C. Cox of Greensboro, Cynthia C. Ballard of Matthews, Teresa C. Hayes of Sophia, Gigi C. Elliott of Hickory; brother, E.C. Cox Jr. of Charlotte; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

Margaret G. Hall
ASHEBORO - Margaret Grose Hall, 88, formerly of Asheboro, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Mark Hall and Dr. John S. Rogers officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.

She was a native of Franklinville, the widow of Walter Linton Hall and a member of First Baptist Church where she was the Sunday school pianist for more than 50 years. She was a member of the Smiling Squares Square Dance Club, the Randolph Square Dance Club and a charter member of Asheboro Pilot Club.

Surviving are sons, Larry J. Hall and Darrell R. Parks, both of Asheboro; daughters, Janice H. Byrd of Pleasant Garden and Elaine Haigler of Asheboro; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Friday, other times at her residence.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Music Fund, 133 N. Church St., Asheboro, N.C. 27203.

Evelyn H. Nickens
ASHEBORO - Evelyn Hughes Nickens, 81, formerly of 821 S. Cox St., Asheboro, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Calvary United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Tommy Lee and the Rev. Edward S. Tapper officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Raymond Marion "Nick" Nickens, employed at Bost Neckwear, Bossong Hosiery and Stedman Manufacturing. She served on the official board of the Calvary United Methodist Church, taught Sunday school and was a Circle Leader.

Surviving are son, Tom Nickens of Asheboro, sisters, Dorothy Richardson of Asheboro and Frances Trochan of Ringwood, N.J.; one granddaughter.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 6-8 p.m. Friday.

Ollie Mae L. Pemberton
MT. GILEAD - Ollie Mae Leak Pemberton, 90, formerly of Rudisell Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, in the Forrest Oaks Health Care Center, Albemarle.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Chestnut A.M.E. Zion church, where she was a member. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a Richmond County native, the widow of John Henry Pemberton, a member of the Stewardess Board, Sunday school treasurer and president of The Missionary Board.

Surviving are daughters, Edna Alsbrook and Mary Helen Alsbrook, both of Mt. Gilead, Nettie Pemberton of the home, Jessie Morrison of Candor and Lorraine Stancil of New Jersey; sons, Leon Pemberton Sr. and Bee Pemberton of Mt. Gilead; 30 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Harris Funeral Home, Mt. Gilead, 7-8 p.m. Saturday.

WADEVILLE - Louang Douangkham, 85, formerly of Samthong Village, Wadeville Community, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at his home.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at Harris Funeral Home, Mt. Gilead. Burial will be in Stanly Gardens of Memory, Albemarle.

He was a native of Laos.

Surviving are wife, Phenge Khamtee; two sons; two daughters; 15 grandchildren, all of North Carolina.

There will be a sit-in 3-5 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. until the funeral hour Saturday.

Rebecca P. Ward
GREENSBORO - Rebecca "Becky" Poe Ward, 84, formerly of Randleman Road, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at her home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Centre Friends Meeting, where she was a member. Interment will be at the church cemetery.

She was the widow of Dennis Wesley Ward.

Surviving are sons, Ray Ward of Pleasant Garden, Jimmie Ward of Greensboro; brother, John Julius Poe of Liberty; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Hanes-Lineberry Vanstory Street Chapel 7-9 p.m. Friday.

Joseph C. Smith
SILER CITY - Joseph Clymer Smith, 81, formerly of 2038 S. Chatham Ave., died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, at Windsor Point, Fuquay-Varina.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Moon's Chapel Baptist Church, where he attended, with the Rev. Scott Faw and the Rev. Garland Bourdeaux officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Chatham County, a graduate of Staley School, where he was class valedictorian and the widower of Emily Ross Smith. He was co-owner of and operator of Smith Brothers Trucking and after retirement worked on the family dairy farm. He taught the men's Sunday school class at Staley Baptist Church, and was a member of the senior men's Sunday school class at Moon's Chapel Church.

Surviving are daughter, Lydia S. Snipes of Holly Springs; sons, Chip Smith of Richmond, Ky., Lynn Smith of Spartenburg, S.C.; brothers, Don Smith of Siler City, Bill Smith of Ramseur; seven grandchildren.

The family will be at Smith and Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-9 p.m. Friday and afterward at the home of Lydia S. Snipes, 7101 Waltridge Place, Holly Springs.

John C. Robbins
STAR - John Clark Robbins, 70, formerly of 119 Peacock Drive, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Phillips Funeral Home, Star, with the Rev. Hubert McLeod officiating. Burial will be in Callicutt Chapel Church Cemetery in Troy.

He was a native of Montgomery County.

Surviving are wife, Martha Almeta Hurley Robbins of the home; stepsons, Donnie Hurley and Jimmy Hurley, both of Star; sisters, Alma Wilkerson and Connie Hulin, both of Asheboro, Nellie Wooten of Randleman, Merlene Dorsett of Star; brother, Henry Page Robbins of Asheboro; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Friday.

GOLDSTON - Clara Phillips Gaines, 94, formerly of 2441 South Main St., died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, at her home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Goldston Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. David Hicks officiating. Burial will be in Goldston Cemetery.

She was a native of Chatham County and the widow of Corbett S. Gaines Sr. She was a member of the Women's Sunday school class, a member of the WMU, a leader of the RAs and GAs and a member of the Goldston Women's Club.

Surviving are daughter, Delores G. Register of Sanford; sons, C.S. Gaines Jr. of Goldston, Phil Gaines Sr. of Siler City, John Gaines of Goldston, Max Gaines of Washington; sister, Norma Zachery of Graham; 18 grandchildren.

The family will be at Smith and Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-9 p.m. Thursday, other times at her residence.
