ASHEBORO - Juanita Hodges Wilson, 74, of Nassau Extended Care, died Friday, May 31, 2002, at Island Medical Center in Hempstead, N.Y.

Funeral service will be noon Thursday at Tucker and Sons Funeral Home, Fayetteville. Burial will be in Hodges Family Cemetery.

She was a native of Cumberland County, a graduate of Bennett College with a B.S. and a dietitian for Sydenham Hospital in New York.

Surviving are son, Monte Wilson of New York; sisters, Helen Melvin, Sylvia Smith, Bernice Douglass, all of Hope Mills, Mable Johnson of Columbus, Md., Dr. Claretta Dudley of Chicago, Ill.; brothers, Charles Hodges Sr. of Asheboro, Carl D. Hodges of Durham, Dr. James D. Hodges of Montclair, N.J., Clarence Hodges of Fayetteville; two grandchildren.

The family will be at the church 10 a.m.-noon Thursday.

Hodges Funeral Service, Asheboro, is in charge of arrangements.

Floyd L. Hayes
RANDLEMAN - Floyd Lewis Hayes, 82, of 5127 Wall Brothers Road, Sophia, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Pugh Funeral Home, Randleman, with the Rev. Jack Clark officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

He was a native of Randolph County, a member of Sophia United Church of Christ and a retired dairy farmer.

Surviving are sisters, Dorsie Walker of Kernersville, Felcie H. Underwood of Asheboro; brothers, Denver Hayes of Asheboro, Stacy Hayes of Sophia.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Memorials may be made to Sophia United Church of Christ, 5747 U.S. 311, Sophia, N.C. 27350.

Stanley Stout
GREENSBORO - Stanley Stout, 84, of 4104 S. Holden Road, died Monday, June 3, 2002.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home, Vanstory Chapel, Greensboro. Burial will be in Westminster Gardens.

He was the retired owner and operator of Stout Inc. for over 35 years, a member of Masonic Lodge #76 and a coach for little league baseball in the Sumner community.

Surviving are wife, Ollie Stout of Greensboro; daughter, Helen S. Jernigan of Greensboro; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.

Billy Hill
LEXINGTON - Billy Hill, 72, of 2011 Hill Road, died Monday, June 3, 2002, in Asheboro.

Funeral service will be 4 p.m. Thursday at J.C. Green and Sons Funeral Home, Thomasville, with the Rev. Charles Lackey officiating. Burial will be in Walter's Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

He was a retired truck driver for the City of Thomasville and of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are sons, Michael Hill and Todd Hill, both of Lexington; sisters, Vellie Hill of Lexington, Texie Black of Thomasville, Pauline Hoover and Bertha Hoover, both of Denton; two grandchildren.

The family will at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.

Gordon D. Fincher
MONROE - Gordon Daniel Fincher, 92, died Friday, May 31, 2002, at the Rehabilitation & Nursing Center, Monroe.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Morning Star A.M.E. Zion Church, Monroe. Burial will be in Watts Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

He was a native of Union County.

Surviving are daughters, Hattie F. Penney of Washington, D.C., Zeolive Mitchell of Mineral Springs, Mary Frances Price of Randleman, Carolyn Carr and Leola Staton, both of New York, N.Y.; several grandchildren.

The family will be at the home of Zeolive Mitchell, 4609 Springview Drive, Mineral Springs.

ASHEBORO - Virgie Iola Smith Pugh, 93, of 2071 N.C. 42 South, Asheboro, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at her home.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Bethel Friends Meeting, where she was a member, with the Rev. Terry Kersey and Darrin Allen officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Tom D. Pugh, a seamstress and a retired worker from Fashion Fabrics.

Surviving are sons, Odell H. Pugh, Harris N. Pugh, both of Asheboro, Wade D. Pugh, Theodore B. Pugh, both of Sophia; daughter, Phyllis P. Allen of Ramseur; brother, Waldo Smith of Reidsville; sisters, Edith S. Macon of Ramseur, Roberta S. Eckard of Orlando, Fla., Juanita S. Walker of Winston-Salem; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 6:30-9 p.m. Thursday, other times at the home.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Browers Wesleyan Memorial Church, with the Rev. Rodney Purcell officiating. Burial will be in Huldah Baptist Church Cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Elmer C. Clayton and a member of Huldah Baptist Church.

Surviving are daughter, Emily Hatley of Asheboro; sons, Ronald D. Clayton, Roger W. Clayton, both of Asheboro; sisters, Ruby Bowers of Asheboro, Cathryn Brady of Ramseur; brother, James B. Cagle of Asheboro; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.

DENTON - Louise McDowell Surratt, 67, of Handy Road, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Lineberry United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Dan McClure officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Davidson County, the widow of Clyde York Surratt, a graduate of Denton High School, a retired worker from Burlington Industries and a member of the choir and the assistant pianist at her church.

Surviving are son, Michael Surratt of Denton; daughter, Lisa Hedrick of Denton; mother, Bessie Loflin McDowell of Denton; four grandchildren.

The family will be at Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, other times at the home of Lisa Hedrick, 189 Piedmont School Road, Denton.

Richard A. Gibson
TRINITY - Richard Arnold Gibson, 68, of 5428 Braxton Craven Road, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at his home.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Friday at St. Mary's United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Lee Bynum officiating. Burial will be in Trinity Cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, employed as an automobile salesman at Crescent Ford, High Point, a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of the United Methodist Men and chairperson of the Pastor-Parish Relations Board at his church.

Surviving are wife, Joyce Gray Gibson of the home; son, Arnold Keith Gibson of Raleigh; daughter, Terri Gibson of Trinity; brothers, Thurman Gibson, Lorenzo Gibson, both of High Point; sister, JoAnn Jackson of High Point; one grandson.

The family will be at the church at 2:30 p.m., other times at the home.

Haizlip Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

BEAR CREEK - Allene Tally Beck, 73, of 18831 N.C. 902, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Hickory Grove Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Darrell Garner officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Chatham County and a retired worker from Boling Chair Co. in Siler City.

Surviving are husband, Wade T. Beck of Bear Creek; daughter, Carolyn Gatewood of Walkertown; son, Ricky Beck of Bear Creek; sisters, Mable T. Phillips, Marjorie T. Gaines, both of Bear Creek, Nellie T. Gaines of Goldston; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Smith and Buckner Funeral Home 7-9 p.m. Thursday.

Loyd R. Norris
GREENSBORO - Loyd Raymond Norris, 81, of Greensboro, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at Wesley Long Hospital.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Gilmore Memorial Park, Julian with Dr. Keith Moore officiating.

He was a native of Watauga County and a retired carpenter with Norris Construction. A veteran of World War II, he received a Purple Heart and three bronze service stars.

Surviving are wife, Ruby Glenn Norris of the home; son, Gary Norris of Julian; daughter, Evelyn Moore of Mt. Gilead; sister, Louise Cook of Mebane; brothers, Jake Norris, Lonnie Norris, both of Mebane; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty, 6-8 p.m. Friday, other times at the home of Gary Norris, 5728 Clarence Road, Julian.

Rev. Jesse R. Mansfield
VASS - The Rev. Jesse Ray Mansfield, 64, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at his home.

Memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, Vass, where he was the minister, with Dr. Michael G. Cogdill, the Rev. Tom Herndon and the Rev. Bruce Benton officiating. Burial will be in Union Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Cameron.

He received undergraduate degrees from Chowan College and Barton College. He received a bachelor's and master's of Divinity degree from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. His ministry included serving Hickory Baptist Church, Whitakers; Salem Baptist Church, Elizabeth City; Selma Baptist Church, Selma; and for the last 30 years First Baptist Church, Vass. While serving First Baptist Church he was a bivocational minister working as an administrator in Continuing Education at Sandhills Community College from 1970-1987. He was also a licensed commercial pilot.

Surviving are wife, Judith Lowry Mansfield of Vass; daughters, Deborah Fleischman of Cary, Sherry Riley of Carthage; sons, Russell Mansfield of Matthews, Darrell Mansfield of Albemarle; brothers, Ervin Mansfield of Hertford, Frank Mansfield of Elizabeth City.

The family will be at First Baptist Church 6-8 p.m. Thursday.

FRANKLINVILLE - Reynaldo Osorto, 73, of 4104 Hardin Elison Road, died Monday, June 3, 2002, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Chatham Memorial Park, Siler City. Entombment will be in Chatham Memorial Park.

He was a native of Allanza, Honduras and a retired supervisor with Pepsi Cola Company.

Surviving are wife, Emilia Osorto of Franklinville; sons, Jose Ruben Osorto, Carlos Enrique Osorto, Nahun Elias Osorto, all of Honduras, David Reynaldo Osorto, Oscar Omar Osorto, both of Liberty; daughters, Iris Marcela Diaz, Emilia Ester Osorto, both of Franklinville, Cilia Isabel Funiga of Honduras; brother, Martin Mejia of Honduras; 19 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Thomas A. Best Sr.
DENTON - Thomas Alderman Best Sr., 84, of N.C. 109 South, died Monday, June 3, 2002, at his home.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Summerville Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Flynn Richardson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Sampson County, the widower of Sybil Williams Best, a 23-year U.S. Air Force veteran and a retired captain. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross in World War II and was a candidate for the French Legion of Honor Award.

Surviving are sons, Thomas A. Best Jr. of Kings Mountain, Robert Best of Little Rock, Ark.; daughters, Cathi Birchfield of Johnson City, Tenn., Patricia McLaughlin of Denton, Mary Jones of Jackson, Tenn., Barbara Simmons of Lake Mary, Fla., Sybil Williamson of Sanford, Fla.; sisters, Peggy Moon of Oviedo, Fla., Florence Ticcom of Savannah, N.Y.; 16 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

She was a native of Chatham County and the widow of Wallace N. Moore.

Rebecca H. Cagle
CARTHAGE - Rebecca Hyman Cagle, 91, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at Pinehurst Nursing Center in Pinehurst.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Carthage United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Terry Huffines officiating. Burial will be in Cross Hill Cemetery.

She was a former treasurer, trustee and administrative board member at her church, a former member of Carthage Garden Club, Carthage Planning Board, Moore County Library Commission and Rotary Club of Carthage, where she was a Paul Harris Fellow. She had served as a Carthage town commissioner, a secretary in The Spence and Boyette Law Firm and was retired from The Farmers Home Administration in Carthage.

Surviving are daughter, Hilda C. Morris; brother, Robert J. Hyman; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Fry and Pricket Funeral Home 7-8:30 p.m. Friday.

ASHEBORO - Effie Fagge Johnson, 95, of 1986 Zoo Parkway, Asheboro, formerly of Seagrove, died Thursday, June 6, 2002, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. William Christopher Thore officiating. Burial will be in Asbury Baptist Church Cemetery.

She was a native of Stokes County, the widow of Jasper Lewis Johnson, a member of Asbury Baptist Church and a homemaker.

Surviving are daughters, Louise Cox, Mary Susan "Susie" Auman, both of Asheboro; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.
