RAMSEUR - James Clyde Hicks, 80, of 2033 N.C. 49 North, died Saturday, April 26, 2003 at Universal Health Care of Ramseur.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Parks Cross Roads Christian Church with the Rev. James Turner officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

He was a Randolph County native and a deacon of Parks Cross Roads Christian Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and formerly employed with Acme McCrary Corp. where he also pitched for the Acme McCrary Eagles Baseball Team. He was retired from Oliver Rubber Company.

Surviving are wife, Mary Lee Kivett Hicks; daughter, Darius Stutts of Ramseur; sisters, Winnie Jester of Portsmouth, Va. and Glenda Lewis of Asheboro; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

ASHEBORO - Grady Lee Cox, 73, of 317 McMasters St., Asheboro, died Tuesday, April 22, 2003, at his home.

A private service with military honors will be held Thursday in the State Veterans Cemetery, Black Mountain, with the Rev. Randy Melton officiating.

He was a native of Asheville, a graduate of Leicester High School and a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces.

Surviving are daughter, Lisa Neal of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; sisters, Lois C. Owens of Asheville, Evelyn Hodges of Candler, Viola Thompson of Arden; brothers, William H. Cox of Niceville, Fla., Edward Cox of Asheville.

Ridge Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Asheboro is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 202 Centerport Drive, Greensboro, N.C. 27409.

Toney C. Summey
TRINITY - Toney Clayton Summey, 41, of 2238 Ross Wood Road, died Sunday, April 27, 2003.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Balfour Baptist Church, with the Rev. Roger Porter, Dr. C. Dwight Ayers and Sheriff Litchard Hurley officiating. Burial will be in Pierce's Chapel Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

He was a graduate of East Davidson High School, a former truck driver and a graduate of law enforcement rookie school. He was a deputy with the Randolph County Sheriff's Department and a member of New Heights Baptist Church in Trinity. He was a member of Tabernacle Fire Department where he served on the Board of Directors, and a volunteer and fund raiser for Operation Red Sleigh.

Surviving are wife, Dena Tucker Summey; daughter, Megan Summey of the home; son, Andrew Summey of the home; parents, Lois and Clayton Summey of Thomasville; grandmother, Evelyn Summey of Trinity.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 6-8 p.m. Wednesday.

Memorials may be made to the Toney Summey Memorial Fund at a local branch of BB&T.

Treva C. Chriscoe
SEAGROVE - Treva Cooper Chriscoe of 2422 N.C. 705 died Sunday, April 27, 2003, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. K. Maurice Cooper and the Rev. Grady Blakely officiating. Burial will be in Union Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

She was a native of Guilford County, a homemaker and a member of Union Grove Baptist Church where she sang in the choir.

Surviving are husband, Paul H. Chriscoe of the home; sons, James H. Chriscoe and Roger P. Chriscoe, both of Seagrove; brothers, the Rev. K. Maurice Cooper of Raleigh, Jimmy Cooper of Ramseur; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 1-2 p.m. Wednesday.

Pattie W. Johnson
LIBERTY - Pattie Watkins Johnson, 90, died Sunday, April 27, 2003, at Morning View of Irving Park, Greensboro.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fairview Cemetery, Liberty.

She was a native of Ramseur and the widow of T. Phil Johnson. She attended Randolph-Macon Academy in Danville, Va., and graduated from Martha Washington School in Washington, D.C.

Surviving are sons, Thomas P. Johnson Jr. of Greensboro, Ashley A. Johnson of Kiawah Island, S.C.; daughter, Patricia J. Sprinkle of Boca Raton, Fla.; brother, E.C. "Pep" Watkins of Ramseur; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty, 6-8 p.m. Tuesday.

Dock Hardister
DENTON - E.D. "Dock" Hardister, 93, of Kidds Mountain Road, died Sunday, April 27, 2003, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, with the Rev. James Draughn and the Rev. Harold Hammond officiating. Burial will be in Liberty Fellowship Church Cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, the widower of Beulah Mae Tysinger Hardister, a farmer and a member of Liberty Fellowship Church.

Surviving are sons, Elsie Hardister and Rickie Hardister, both of Denton, Wayne Hardister of Greensboro; daughters, Evelyn Shaw of Denton, Brenda Crotts of Archdale; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home of Rickie Hardister, 8570 New Hope Road, Denton.

Sarah E. Carrico
LEXINGTON - Sarah Elizabeth Carrico, 18, of 170 Frontier Drive, died Sunday, April 27, 2003, in Lexington Memorial Hospital from injuries received from an auto accident.

Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Park Place Baptist Church, Thomasville, where she was a member, with the Rev. Mark Sink officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park, Asheboro.

She was a native of Randolph County, a 2002 graduate of Central Davidson High School and attended Davidson County Community College where she was a college ambassador and a member of the Christian Origination, Alpha & Omega Club. She was an instructor with Sheets Dance Academy, previously serving as an intern there and employed with Gold's Gym in the childcare center.

Surviving are parents, Chris and Gail Crawford of the home; brother, David Crawford of Ft. Benning, Ga.; sister, Amy C. Petty of Concord; father, Randy Carrico of Asheboro; grandmother, Ruth Williams of Asheboro.

The family will be at Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington, 6-9 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home.

TROY - Alfred Howell Smith, 71, of 399 Roslyn Road, died Sunday, April 27, 2003, at his home.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Lomax Memorial Baptist Church, formerly Gospel Light Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. James Edward Lisenby, the Rev. Wayne VunCannon, the Rev. Clyde Allen and the Rev. Dexter Gibson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a Richmond County native.

Surviving are wife, Mildred Mae Glover Smith of the home; daughters, Laura S. Cranford, Donna S. Thompson, Barbara Sue Smith, all of Troy, Lorraine S. Craven of Thomasville; brothers, Curtis Smith and Charlie Smith, both of Rockingham; sisters, Beulah S. Chappell of Florida, Evelyn S. Lehrschall of Rockingham, Virgie S. Hamer of Sanford; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

The family will be at Edwards Funeral Home, Mt. Gilead, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.

Robert L. Pierce
ADVANCE - Robert "Bobby" Lee Pierce, 52, of 221 Oakmont Drive, died Monday, April 28, 2003, in Advance.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Rushwood Park Wesleyan Church, Asheboro, where he was a member, with Dr. Ron Hamilton officiating. Burial will be 2 p.m. in Francisco Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Francisco.

He was a native of Asheboro, owner/operator of Pierce & Shelton, Inc. in Winston-Salem and former owner/president of Mapco, Inc.

Surviving are wife, Laura Shelton Pierce; daughter, Jennifer Vestal of Greensboro; stepdaughter, Ashlyn Vernon of the home; brother, Rickey Pierce of Archdale; two grandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 6-8 p.m. Tuesday.

ROBBINS - Fred Coolidge Hare, 78, of 384 Hare Road, died Monday, April 28, 2003, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at Dover Baptist Church, where he was a member, with Dr. Don Davis and the Rev. Lonnie Gibson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military honors.

He was a native of Moore County, a retired carpenter, a World War II U.S. Army veteran, where he received a Purple Heart, and a member of the Woodmen of the World.

Surviving are sisters, Nellie Marsh of High Point, Rachel Hussey of Robbins, Grace Yow of Sophia, Otta Hussey of Seagrove; brother, Cloves Hare of Asheboro.

The family will be at Phillips Funeral Home, Star, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, other times at 1600 South N.C. 705, Seagrove.

Paul J. Callicutt Jr.
CARTHAGE - Paul J. "Sport" Callicutt Jr., 43, of 321 Hardy Road, died Monday, April 28, 2003, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Bible Church, with the Rev. Max Williams and Dr. William J. Maness Jr. officiating.

He was a native of Montgomery County and a machinist at J.P. Stevens in Aberdeen for 21 years.

Surviving are wife, Beverly Williams Callicutt; daughter, Stacey Callicutt of the home; son, Jeremy Callicutt of the home; mother, Gracie W. Callicutt of Carthage; sisters, Susan Talbert of Troy, Libby Dillon, Patty Collier, Janet Presley and Tammy Dunn, all of Carthage; brother, James Callicutt of Carthage.

The family will be at the home 6-8 p.m. Tuesday.

John E. Williams
EAGLE SPRINGS - John E. Williams, 79, of 9348 N.C. 705, died Sunday, April 27, 2003, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Beulah Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. Archie Stevens officiating. Burial, with military honors, will be in the Williams Family Cemetery.

He was a native of Moore County, a World War II veteran and a member of the VFW. He worked in golf course construction in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

Surviving are wife, Faye Moore Williams; daughters, Sharon McNeill, Roxanne Thomas, Marie Maness, Rebecca Nichols and Ella Grace Lemonds, all of Eagle Springs; son, John E. "Bo" Williams Jr. of Eagle Springs; sisters, Edna Morgan and Hazel Brown, both of Eagle Springs; brother, Shelton Williams of Eagle Springs; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Fry & Prickett Funeral Home, Carthage, 6-9 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home.

Hjordis Lento
ASHEBORO - Hjordis Elvira Blomquist Lento, 87, of 2551 Wedge Place, Asheboro, died Tuesday, April 29, 2003, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.

Funeral service will be 8 p.m. Wednesday at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, with Father Joseph Mack officiating. There will be a private burial.

She was a native of Helsinki, Finland, a homemaker and an artist.

Surviving are husband, Frank Lento of the home; daughters, Linda Argersinger of Asheboro, Carole Sinkevich of Monroe, Conn.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday, other times at the home of Linda Argersinger, 620 Nassau Trail, Asheboro.

DENTON - Ronald Howard Skeen, 70, of Old Camp Road, died Monday, April 28, 2003, at High Point Regional Hospital.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Lineberry United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Dan McClure and the Rev. Peter McGuire officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

He was a native of Guilford County, a retired employee of the N.C. Department of Transportation and a farmer.

Surviving are wife, Jeanette Elliott Skeen of the home; son, Elliott Skeen of Denton; sisters, Romona Shaw of Asheboro, Corrina Talbert of Archdale; one grandchild.

Grady Auman, Jr.
ASHEBORO - Grady "Junior" Auman Jr., 63, of 125 Lewallen Road, Asheboro, died Tuesday, April 29, 2003, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. David Nolan and the Rev. Charles Lindquist officiating. Burial will be in New Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, a 1958 graduate of Seagrove High School and a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. He was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church where he was a Sunday School teacher, served as a Trustee and was a certified Lay Speaker. He was a volunteer with Randolph Hospital.

Surviving are wife, Ann Tippett Auman of Asheboro; son, Andy Auman of Albany, Ga.; daughters, Abby Shaw of Asheboro and Amy Williams of Raleigh; father, Grady Auman Sr. of Asheboro; brother, Johnny Auman of Asheboro; sisters, JoAnn McBride of Star, Joyce Paffe and Janet Tyler, both of Asheboro and Rebecca Prevatte of Southport; seven grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Thursday.

She was a native of Denton, the widow of James Wayne Lanier, a retired employee of Burlington Industries and a member of the Randolph County Senior Adults.

Surviving are daughters, Joyce Marie Venable and Doris Irene Talley, both of Asheboro, Janice Fay Kinley of Lexington; son, James Wayne "Jimmy" Lanier Jr. of Asheboro; sisters, Larea Lamb and Dorothy Callicutt, both of Asheboro, Hilda Fay Dunning of Randleman; brother, Walter Clinton Dunning of Randleman; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday.

LEXINGTON - Nancy Jeanette Covington Kivett, 63, of Kirkman Road, died Tuesday, April 29, 2003, at Lexington Memorial Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington, with Dr. Gary Gibson and the Rev. Jimmy Green officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Memorial Park.

She was a native of Roanoke, Va., a former employee of Fletcher Machine and a member of Open Door Baptist Church.

Surviving are husband, Clyde Kivett of the home; son, William Donald Wyatt of Southmont; stepsons, Robert Kivett of Lexington and Jeff Kivett of New Jersey; stepdaughter, Robin K. Work of King; brother, Herbert Covington of Spokane, Wash.; sister, Patsy Mills of Lexington; three grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; one great-grandchild.

The family will be at the funeral home 6-8 p.m. Thursday; other times at the home of her son, 2396 Beckner Road.

Eleanor B. Tillotson
DENTON - Eleanor Bodenheimer Tillotson, 89, of North Main Street, died Monday, April 28, 2003, at Thomasville Medical Center.

Memorial service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Central United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Joe Collins officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

She was a Davidson County native and a retired sales clerk with Belk. She was founding member of Circle #1 of the Methodist Women at her church and the widow of Wade M. Tillotson.

Surviving are sons, Jery Wade Tillotson of New York City, N.Y., Joseph Morris Tillotson of Los Angeles, Calif., and George Charles Tillotson of Greensboro; daughters, Jayne T. Bennett and Jennifer T. Miller, both of Denton, and Nancy T. Freeman of Raleigh; sisters, Kathleen Branson, Eloise Hundley and Nancy Wright, all of Thomasville; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the church 1:30-3 p.m. prior to the service.

Wilmateen M. Hademan
DENTON - Wilmateen Morris Hademan, 80, of SunBridge of Lexington, formerly of Denton, died Wednesday, April 30, 2003, at SunBridge.

Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Friday at Denton Town Cemetery, with the Rev. Flynn Richardson officiating.

She was a member of Summerville Baptist Church where she was a WMU leader and a member of the adult Sunday School class. She worked as a bookkeeper at the VA Hospital in Salisbury and was the widow of Jamie Kearns and Melvin Hademan.

Surviving is son, Steve Kearns of Welcome.

Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, is in charge of arrangements.
