WINSTON-SALEM - Marguerite Harris Newton Query, 83, of Brookridge Retirement Community, formerly of Asheboro, died Monday, May 19, 2003, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.

Graveside service will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Greenwood Cemetery, Belmont.

Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 28, at Brookridge Retirement Community, Winston-Salem.

She was a graduate of St. Vincent's School of Nursing in Birmingham, Ala., and a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving are daughter, Suzanne Query of Winston-Salem; son, Walter Query of Greensboro.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 9:30-11:30 a.m. Thursday.

James C. Greene
ASHEBORO - James Colon Greene, 87, of 131 McAlister St., Asheboro, died Thursday, May 22, 2003, at Kindred Hospital, Greensboro.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro. Entombment will follow in Randolph Memorial Park.

He was a Montgomery County native, a U.S. Army veteran having served in World War II and retired from J.A. Jones Construction Co. in Baltimore, Md. He was a member of the Asheboro congregation of the Jehovah's Witness-Kingdom Hall.

Surviving are wife, Vietta Greene of the home; son, James Caldwell Greene of Maryland; daughter, Angela Moss of Baltimore, Md.; brother, Everette Greene of Washington, D.C.; six grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Shawn C. Gray
FRANKLINVILLE - Shawn Christopher Gray, 19, of 2658 Low Bridge Road, died Friday, May 23, 2003, at his home.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty, with the Rev. Wayne Dunn officiating. Burial will follow in Holly Springs Friends Meeting Cemetery, Ramseur.

He was an Alamance County native.

Surviving are parents, James Ronald and Elizabeth Lee Gray of the home; sisters, Samantha Luther of Ramseur and Elizabeth Erin Gray of the home; brothers, Mark Lee Vern of Coleridge, David Wayne Gray, Ronald Eric Gray and Clinton E. Gray, all of the home; grandparents, George Robert and Lela Gray of Siler City and Richard Thorpe of Burlington.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Sunday; other times at the home.

M. Harold Overman
LIBERTY - M. Harold Overman, 81, of 2658 Pleasant Hill-Liberty Road, died Monday, May 26, 2003, at the VA Hospital in Durham.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Pleasant Hill Christian Church, where he was a member. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Alamance County, a World War II U.S. Navy veteran, a former employee of Liberty Hosiery and the original owner of the Liberty Dairy Bar.

Surviving are wife, Marie D. Overman of the home; daughter, Wanda O. Murray of Burlington; son, H. Lee Overman of Liberty; one grandson.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty, 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, other times at the home.

Joetta A. Gilliland
DENTON - Joetta Lane Allen Gilliland, 51, of 8641 New Hope Road, died Monday, May 26, 2003, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, with Pastor Jamie Draughn and the Rev. J. Harold Hammond officiating. Burial will be in Liberty Fellowship Church Cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County and a member of Liberty Fellowship Church, where she served on the building committee and worked with the Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and the youth group.

Surviving are Mason Gilliland of the home; sons, Justin Gilliland and B.J. Gilliland, both of the home; mother, Doris H. Allen of Denton; sisters, Janice A. Perdue of Asheboro, Terri A. Price of Waynesville.

The family will be at the home.

DENTON - James Wayne "Jim" Steed, 80, of East Peacock Avenue, died Monday, May 26, 2003, at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, with the Rev. Dan Money officiating. Burial will be in Denton Town Cemetery.

He was a native of Davidson County, a World War II U.S. Army veteran, a member of First United Methodist Church and a former employee of Burlington Industries. He operated a route for Davidson Laundry and Cleaners, Thomasville.

Surviving are wife, Loucille Kearns Steed of the home; sons, Phillip Wayne Steed and James Dale Steed, both of Denton; brother, Roland Steed of Denton; sister, Shirley Ridenhour of Rockwell; two grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, other times at the home.

DENTON - Walter Lee Shipton, 87, of Shiptontown Road, died Monday, May 26, 2003, at Lexington Memorial Hospital.

Funeral service will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Floyd Baptist Church, with the Rev. Fred Miller and the Rev. Tommy Floyd officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Davidson County and a retired employee of Lexington Furniture Industries, Dixie Plant. He attended Floyd Baptist Church.

Surviving are wife, Nancy Wood Shipton of the home; sons, William Shipton of Linwood, Lee Roy Shipton of Lexington; daughter, Mary Jane Byerly of Denton; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, other times at the home.

Charles B. Loftis
WINSTON-SALEM - Charles B. Loftis, 83, died Sunday, May 25, 2003, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Maple Springs United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Randolph P. Waugh officiating. Burial will be 4:30 p.m. Thursday in New Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery, Seagrove.

He was a native of Alamance County and a World War II U.S. Navy veteran. He retired after 33 years with Burroughs Corp.

Surviving are wife, Sarah C. Loftis of the home; sons, Charles B. Loftis Jr. of Rodonda Beach, Calif., Paul A. Loftis of Asheboro; sisters, Nellie Bryan of Mebane, Mary Elizabeth Cobb of Greensboro, Nancy Williams of Hampstead, Carolyn Bean of Mebane; brothers, C.S. Loftis Jr. of Burlington, the Rev. Thomas Loftis of Sanford; three grandchildren.

The family will be at the church following the service.

CANDOR - Johnny B. Moore, 65, of 130 Erica Lane, died Saturday, May 24, 2003, at his home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Pleasant Hill A.M.E. Zion Church, with the Rev. Roosevelt Robertson officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Surviving are wife, Bobbie Jean Townsend Moore of the home; sons, Ricky Moore and Johnny Moore Jr., both of Candor, Kenneth Moore of Robbins; daughters, Barbara R. Brower and Angie Bowden, both of Candor, Vanessa F. Moore of the home; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren.

R.C. Bostic Funeral Home, Candor, is in charge of arrangements.

Beatrice M. Cross
PANAMA CITY, Fla. - Beatrice Morphis Cross, 84, died Wednesday, May 21, 2003, in Panama City, Fla.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Oaklawn Cemetery, Asheboro.

She was the widow of William Alexander Cross Jr., the owner of Cross Realty and Construction Company in Greensboro and a former buyer for Belk and East department stores in Asheboro.

Surviving are son, Michael Cross of Lynn Haven, Fla.; one grandson.

Wilson Funeral Home, Panama City, Fla., is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the National Kidney Foundation.

Lola Kennedy
MANHEIM, Pa. - Lola Kennedy, 92, of 25 Ridgewood Manor, formerly of Pound, Va., died Sunday, May 25, 2003, at her home.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Buch Funeral Home, Manheim, Pa. Burial will be in Manheim Fairview Cemetery, Penn Township, Pa.

Surviving are son, Johnnie N. Kennedy of Asheboro; daughter, Frances Heisey of Manheim, Pa.; brothers, Trinkle Mullins, Edgar Mullins, Raymond Mullins and Clarence Mullins, all of Pound, Va., Hubert Mullins of Coburn, Va.; sisters, Lena Stallard and Brenda Mullins, both of Pound, Va.; 15 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Thursday.

LIBERTY - Harvey "Jack" Shoffner of 6093 Kirkman St. Ext., died Tuesday, May 27, 2003.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Lewis Grove Holiness Church. Burial will be in Amos Grove Cemetery.

Surviving are wife, Vertie Green Shoffner of the home; daughters, Mary Patterson of Liberty, Patty Jeffries Wilson of Greensboro; son, Lemuel Shoffner of Liberty; brothers, Percy Shoffner, George Shoffner, both of Liberty, Robert Shoffner of Greensboro, Rev. Raymond Shoffner of Reidsville; sister, Alvenia Cheek of Liberty; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren.

CARTHAGE - Vernon L. Phillips, 81, of 389 Vernon Road, died Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Glendon Christian Church, with the Rev. Bob Yandle officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Moore County, a World War II U.S. Army veteran, formerly employed with the railroad and with Carthage Fabrics Corp., and was a retired farmer.

Surviving are wife, Ella Mae Jordan Phillips; daughter, Kathy Brady of Carthage; sons, Leon Phillips, Ricky Phillips and Michael Phillips, all of Carthage; sister, Edna Giddens of Greensboro; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Fry & Prickett Funeral Home, Carthage, 6-8 p.m. Thursday, other times at the home.

She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Travis O. "Cabbage" Coble, a retired employee of Wal-Mart and a member of Midway Wesleyan Church.

Surviving are sons, Gerald R. Coble and Larry T. Coble, both of Asheboro; sisters, Lorene Johnson and Esther Meredith, both of Asheboro; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Lawrance T. "Bud" Hunt, a homemaker and a former Sunday School teacher and secretary of the Ladies Sharing Circle at her church.

Surviving are daughters, Juanita H. Hinshaw of St. Louis, Mo., Virginia H. Brown and Grace McNeill, both of Asheboro, Margaret Surratt Williamson of Denton; eight grandchildren.

The family will be at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7-9 p.m. Sunday, other times at the home of Grace McNeill, 4021 Old Lexington Road, Asheboro.

He was a native of Randolph County, a World War II U.S. Army veteran, a retired employee of Randolph Electric Membership Corp. and a member of Masonic Lodge #188.

Surviving are wife, Virginia Gallimore Vestal of Asheboro; son, John L. Vestal Jr. of Asheboro; sister, Fern V. Macon of Barren Springs, Va.; brother, J. B. Vestal of Asheboro.
