SILER CITY - Herman Wade Cole, 87, of 721 E. Raleigh St., died Monday, Sept. 1, 2003, at Chatham Hospital.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Loves Creek Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Roy Helms officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Mt. Airy, a World War II U.S. Army veteran, a machinist and a retired salesman for Durham Life insurance Company. He was a retail sales manager for Dossenbach's Furniture Inc., Siler City, a member of Chatham Hospital Auxiliary serving on the surgical desk, reception desk and the PBX and taught the Men's #4 Sunday School class.

Surviving are wife, Lois Harrington Cole of Siler City; son, Donald Wade Cole of Columbia, Md.; brother, Claude Cole of Shelby; two granddaughters; one great-grandson.

The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home.

Elbie S. Smith
DENTON - Elbie Scarboro Smith, 95, of Mountain Vista Health Park, formerly of Peacock Avenue, Denton, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2003, at Lexington Memorial Hospital.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Denton Wesleyan Church, where she was a charter member, with the Rev. Charles Moses officiating. Burial will be in Denton Town Cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Johnnie A. Smith and a homemaker.

Surviving are sons, Willard Smith and Marshall Smith, both of Denton; daughter, Doris Harris of Denton; brothers, Almer Scarboro and Carlo Scarboro, both of Denton; sister, Hallie Lanier of Level Cross; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the church 2-3 p.m. Thursday.

Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, is in charge of arrangements.

Alexander Riddel Jr.
FREDERICK, Md. - Alexander Riddel Jr., 82, of Frederick, Md., died Friday, Aug. 29, 2003, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Pugh Funeral Home, Randleman, with the Rev. Chester W. Byerly officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park, Asheboro. Funeral service was 10 a.m. Monday at Frederick Presbyterian Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Ginger G. Memmott officiating.

He was a native of New Brighton, Pa., the widower of Florence Faye Splude Riddel and a ruling elder and a leader of the Adult Bible Study class at his church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam and retired as a lieutenant colonel after 26 years. He was a graduate of the Carnegie Institute with a B.S. in chemical Engineering and a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a master's in letters and arts and a Ph.D. in economics. He taught at Robert Morris College, Coraopolis, Pa., and at Salem Junior College in North Carolina. He was a professor of Economics at Catholic University, Washington, D.C., a member of Centennial Lodge #544, F.& A. Masons, a 32nd degree member of the Scottish Rite, Valley of Pittsburgh and a member of Zamora Temple, A.A.O.N.M. Shrine of Irondale, Ala.

Surviving are sons, Alexander Riddel III of Greensburg, Pa., Bruce Clyde Riddel of London, England; sister, Alice Joyce Stillwagon of Beaver, Pa.; brother, John Wood Riddel of Mississippi; two grandchildren.

Robert E. Dailey & Son Funeral Home, Frederick, Md., was also in charge of arrangements.

Audrey B. Deaton
ASHEBORO - Audrey Bristow Deaton, 81, of 1115 Old State Highway, Asheboro, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2003, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Marlboro Friends Meeting Cemetery, with the Rev. John Sides officiating.

She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Arnie Hugh Deaton and the co-owner and operator of Deaton Grocery.

Surviving are daughter, Lisa D. Dawson of the home; son, Mark K. Deaton of Staunton, Va.; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Ridge Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Asheboro, is in charge of arrangements.

Maxine Parks
ASHEBORO - Maxine Parks, 93, formerly of Straight Street, Asheboro, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2003, at SunBridge Care & Rehabilitation of Asheboro.

A private service will be held.

She was a native of Randolph County, a retired employee of Acme-McCrary and of the Methodist faith.

The family will be at Callicutt Memorial Chapel 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

She was a native of Moore County and a homemaker.

Willie C. Jordan
SANFORD - Willie Carl Jordan, 82, of 628 Glenwood Drive, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2003, at the Veteran's Administration Hospital, Durham.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Cool Springs Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Ira Sutton officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County and a World War II veteran.

Surviving are wife, Bessie Hill Jordan; sons, Wayne Jordan of Graham, Joel Jordan of Asheboro; brother, Edward Jordan of Asheboro; sisters, Edna Hayes of Seagrove, Nellie Irvine of Asheboro, Mary Coltrane of Saxapahaw; five grandchildren.

The family will be at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home, Sanford, 6-8 p.m. Wednesday.

Johnie R. Cockman
ROBBINS - Johnie Roy Cockman, 84, of 312 Cockman Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2003, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Calvary Baptist Church, Carthage, where he was a member, with the Rev. Terry Burris officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military honors by the Randolph County Honor Guard.

He was a native of Moore County, a retired carpenter, a World War II U.S. Army veteran and a recipient of the Eamet Campaign Medal, five Bronze Service Stars and a Good Conduct Medal. He was a member of VFW Post 9245 in Robbins.

Surviving are wife, Tessie Maness Cockman; son, Johnie Edwin Cockman of Robbins; daughter, Peggy Peele of Carthage; sister, Myrtle Cole of Greensboro; two grandchildren.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, other times at the home.

Marie W. DeLoach
ASHEBORO - Marie Wallace DeLoach, 70, of 230 E. Presnell St., Asheboro, died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003, at Asheboro Health & Rehabilitation.

Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at High Pine Wesleyan Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Dwight T. Wallace officiating.

She was a native of Cumberland County and a retired bookkeeper with Asheboro Summit.

Surviving are son, Mark W. Craven of Asheboro; brothers, Dwight T. Wallace of Marshallville, Ga., James Mac Wallace of Sparks, Nev.

Bobbye H. Wellington
ASHEBORO - Bobbye Lou Herrington Wellington, 58, of Asheboro, died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003, in Gainesville, Fla.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, Asheboro, where she was a member.

Surviving are husband, Donald F. Wellington; daughters, Cheryl W. Roberts of Asheboro, Kerry W. Pardy of Summerfield; son, Brad Wellington of Asheboro; brother, Russell Herrington of Alexandria, Va.; parents, Robert and Dorothy Herrington of Clearwater, Fla.; seven grandchildren.

Kathryn T. Collins
MOUNT AIRY - Kathryn Elizabeth Tolbert Collins, 48, of 227 Quaker Road, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003.

Memorial service will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Flat Rock Baptist Church, where she was a member, with Dr. Jon Cawley and the Rev. Samuel Moore officiating.

She was a native of Los Angeles County, Calif., and a teacher's assistant at Cedar Ridge Elementary School.

Surviving are husband, Grayson Collins of the home; daughters, Ashley Collins of Charlotte, Jessica Collins of the home; brothers, Marc Tolbert of Asheboro, Gary Tolbert of Statesville; half sisters, Barbara Samson of Sea Girt, N.J., Barbara Younger of Mount Airy.

The family will be at the church 2:30 p.m. Sunday until the time of the service.

ASHEBORO - Linda Saunders Ingold, 61, of 360 Forest Lane, Asheboro, died Friday, Sept. 5, 2003, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Funeral service will be 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Cross Road Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Johnny R. Henderson officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County, retired from the Randolph County Board of Education and a Sunday school teacher and AWANA program teacher at her church.

Surviving are husband, Jesse Ingold; daughters, Sherri I. Floyd of Archdale, Sandi I. Brown of Asheboro, Holli I. Lanier; son, Bruce Lanier of Coleridge; brother, Jack Saunders of Thomasville, Ga.; sister, Sue Saunders of Bradenton, Fla.; five grandchildren.

The family will be at the church 1:30-3:15 p.m. Sunday, other times at the home.

ASHEBORO - Ada Ruth Roach Porter, 79, of 400 Vision Drive, Asheboro, died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003, at SunBridge Nursing Center, Asheboro.

Graveside service will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Oakwood Cemetery, Mebane, with Dr. Terry Farmer officiating.

She was a native of Alamance County, the widow of Clarence Porter, a retired employee of Rental Towel & Uniform and a member of First Baptist Church of Mebane.

The family will be at Rich & Thompson Funeral Home, Graham, 1-2 p.m. Sunday.

Lillian Gallimore
ELLERBE - Lillian Elizabeth Blake Gallimore, 89, of 416 Gallimore Road, died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003, at her home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Jackson Springs Presbyterian Church, where she was a member, with Dr. Robert Ramey and the Rev. David Murphy officiating. Burial will be in Candor Cemetery.

She was a native of Richmond County, the widow of D. Perry Gallimore and president of the Presbyterian Women and secretary of the Presbyterian Women District Five in the Fayetteville Presbytery. She was the first woman at her church to serve as a Sunday school superintendent, deacon and elder and was in the church choir. She was a homemaker, farmer, peach grower and in the trucking business. She was a member of the N.C. Peach Grower's Society, participated in N.C. Peach pageants and was the 2000 grand marshal of the Candor Peach Festival.

Surviving are daughter, Carol G. Masten of Pinehurst; son, Pratt Gallimore of Ellerbe; sisters, Margaret Payne of Greensboro, Betty McNeill of Candor; brothers, Harris Blake of Pinehurst, Waylon Blake of Columbia, S.C.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Briggs-Candor Funeral Home, Candor, 6-8 p.m. Saturday, other times at the home.

ASHEBORO - Clifton Paris Lambe, 63, of 1252 Copperhead Road, Asheboro, died Friday, Sept. 5, 2003, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

He was a native of Randolph County, the widower of Patricia Arthur Lambe, a self-employed painter and a U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving are sons, Robert Joyce of Boston, Mass., Barry Lambe of Liberty, Franklin Lambe of Jacksonville, Fla.; daughter, Eugenia Savage of Asheboro; mother, Nora Presnell of Asheboro; brothers, Larry Lambe, John "Tim" Presnell and Marty Presnell, all of Asheboro, Galen "Mitchell" Presnell of Salisbury; sisters, Elouise Boyd of Chemsford, Mass., Linda Cole of Seagrove, Sadie "Penny" Maness of Asheboro; nine grandchildren.

She was a native of Davidson County, the widow of Marcus E. Loflin Jr. and a retired employee of B.B. Walker Shoe Co.

Surviving are daughters, Mary L. Garner of Asheboro, Rose L. Blalock of Franklinville; son, Steve Loflin of Asheboro; sisters, Ruby Tucker and Trula Ray, both of Lexington; brother, Lloyd Tysinger of Lexington; one grandson.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 6-8 p.m. Sunday, other times at the home of Mary Garner, 4583 Happy Hollow Road, Asheboro.

DENTON - Bertha Grubb Harrison, 96, of Old N.C. 109 South, Lexington, died Friday, Sept. 5, 2003, at her home.

She was a native of Davidson County, the widow of Shelly Harrison, a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are sons, Bryce C. Harrison and Robbie C. Harrison, both of Lexington; daughters, Edith Thomason, Linda Smith, Phyllis Cockerham, all of Lexington, Judy Smith of Denton; brothers, Troy Grubb and Clifford Grubb, both of Lexington; sister, Ruby Nance of Lexington; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

TROY - Thomas Harris "Tommie" Freeman, 76, of 107 Freeman Electric Road, died Friday, Sept. 5, 2003, at his home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Long Hill Baptist Church, Candor, where he was a member, with the Rev. Larry Beaver and the Rev. Lee Fish officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Montgomery County and a retired supervisor with Capel Inc.

Surviving are wife, Ruth Morton Freeman of the home; sons, Dwight Freeman and Terry Freeman, both of Troy; daughter, Judy F. Fish of Troy; brothers, Herbert Freeman and Jackie Freeman, both of Liberty; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, Troy, 7-9 p.m. Sunday, other times at the home.
