GOLDSTON - Nathan Earl Brooks, 81, of 38 Ashland Drive, died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003, at SunBridge Care Facilities, Siler City.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Goldston Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. David Hicks officiating. Burial will be in Tyson's Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Bear Creek, with military rites.

He was a native of Chatham County, the widower of Annie Laurie Wicker Brooks, a retired shoe shop repairman and a retired employee of Kayser-Roth. He was a church organist, a member of the Men's Sunday School class and a World War II U.S. Navy veteran.

The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-9 p.m. Saturday, other times at the home.

STAR - William "Billy" Thomas Hicks, 59, of Wilson Family Care Home, Star, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

Graveside service will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Star United Methodist Church cemetery.

He was a native of Montgomery County and attended Star United Methodist Church.

RANDLEMAN - Robert Lee Pittman III, 16, of Newnan, Ga., died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Randolph Memorial Park.

Surviving are mother, Teresa Thomas of Randleman; father and stepmother, Robert L. and Tammy Pittman of Newnan, Ga.; sister, April Pittman of Chicago, Ill.; stepbrother, Isaac Thomas of Randleman; grandparents, Norman "Buddy" Smith of High Point, Edith Wipky of Randleman, Roy and Barbara Dixon of Archdale.

LIBERTY - Cora "Trick" Dodson Vernon, 103, of SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation, Asheboro, formerly of Liberty, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003.

Funeral service will be 2:30 p.m. Monday at Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.

She was a native of Stokes County.

Surviving are daughter, Polly Nixon of Franklinville; son, Ray Vernon of Sebastian, Fla.; sister, Fannie Dodson of Liberty; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

DENTON - John Wayne Gallimore, 66, of Garner Street, died Friday, Sept. 26, 2003, at his home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, with the Rev. Don Jarrell officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

He was a native of Davidson County, a graduate of Denton High School, a retired employee of Thomasville Furniture Industries and he attended Calvary Gospel Church.

Surviving are wife, Wanda Halbrook Gallimore of the home; sons, Marshall W. Gallimore and Dale Gallimore, both of Denton; daughter, Teresa Fritts of Denton; brothers, Pete Gallimore, Calvin Gallimore and Otto Gallimore, all of Denton, Colon Gallimore and Talton Tase Gallimore, both of Thomasville; two grandchildren.

BENNETT - Evelyn Stokes Wilson, 87, formerly of 1190 Bernard Purvis Road, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, at Clapp's Nursing Home, Asheboro.

Family graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Stacy Layne officiating.

She was a native of Chatham County, the widow of Thomas C. Wilson and a member of Beulah Baptist Church.

Surviving are sisters, Maggie Phillips and Thelma Scott, both of Asheboro.

Visitation will be at Joyce-Brady Funeral Home, Bennett, noon-6 p.m. Sunday.

CARTHAGE - Kathleen Scott Abdo, 70, of 223 Odessa Lane, died Friday, Sept. 26, 2003, at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Needham's Grove Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. James E. Cockram officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Moore County, a member of the Adult Sunday School class at her church and a retired employee of Mountain View Nursing Center.

Surviving are three children; brother, Walter "Buster" Scott of Seagrove; sisters, Geneva S. Dunlap and Juanita S. Maness, both of Seagrove, Betsy S. Hussey of Robbins, Judy S. Burns of Eagle Springs.

She was a native of Randolph County and a homemaker.

She was native of Randolph County and a retired employee of Enterprise Manufacturing.

LIBERTY - Wesley Lineberry, 85, of 6834 Kimesville Road, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, at Hospice of Alamance-Caswell County.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Rehobeth United Methodist Church Cemetery, Ramseur, with the Rev. Steve Johnson and the Rev. Jim Purdy officiating.

He was a native of Guilford County, a World War II U.S. Army veteran, a member of Melanchthon Lutheran Church, attended First United Methodist Church in Liberty, and was employed with Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty.

Surviving are wife, Daile Smith Lineberry of the home; daughter, Sandra Greene of Liberty; stepmother, Fern Graves of Greensboro; half sisters, Linda Ravel of Greensboro, Sue Council of McLeansville; two granddaughters; two great-grandchildren.

CANDOR - Betty Irene McCallum Jordan, 72, of 128 E. Parsons St., died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, at her home.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Candor Cemetery, with the Rev. Bill Mitchell officiating.

She was a native of Moore County, the widow of Nash Jordan, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Star Chapter 111, and retired after 30 years as the co-owner and operator of Nash Jordan Grocery.

Surviving are sisters, Mary Agnes Starry of St. Louis, Mich., Martha Ann Campbell of Barefoot Bay, Fla.; brothers, Fairley McCallum, H.G. McCallum and Ned McCallum, all of Candor.

She was a native of Moore County and the widow of Green McDonald.

Claire S. Clyburn
CHARLESTON, S.C. - Claire Shealy Clyburn, 79, of Longwood Plantation, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, at MUSC Hospital in Charleston.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Memorial Park Cemetery, with the Rev. Julian Ford officiating.

She was a native of Columbia, S.C., the widow of Charles S. Clyburn and a graduate of Orangeburg High School and the Commercial Business School. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, the Basket Band, the Home Department of the church, the church choir, the United Methodist Women, the Junior League and a volunteer worker at the hospital.

Surviving are daughters, Claire Louise "Cookie" C. Sprouse of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Cindy C. Barwick of Mauldin, S.C.; son; Charles Stephen "Steve" Clyburn Jr. of Menlo Park, Calif.; sister, Faye Shealy Keller of Orangeburg, S.C.; four grandsons.

The family will be at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Keller, 2111 Broughton St., Orangeburg, and Dukes-Harley Funeral Home, Orangeburg, S.C.

ASHEBORO - Rex Webster Wall, 73, of 400 Vision Drive, Asheboro, formerly of 857 Honeysuckle Road, Asheboro, died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003, at Randolph Hospital.

He was a native of Surry County, the widower of Frances Parrish Wall and retired from the U.S. Army after 21 years. He was formerly self-employed in home Improvements and of the Baptist faith.

Wall of Bear Creek; daughters, Kathy Sue Humes and Lorrie Brady, both of Bear Creek; stepsons, Jerry Hill of Thomasville, Mike Hill and Kenneth Hill, both of Asheboro; brothers, W.R. She was a native of Montgomery County, a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a computer engineer.

TROY - Kathryn Safrit Cameron, 81, of 220 Frye St., died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003, at FirstHealth Montgomery Memorial Hospital, Troy.

She was a native of Cabarrus County, a retired public educator of the Montgomery County Schools and a member of Troy Presbyterian Church.

She was a native of Moore County and formerly employed in the craft department at Wal-Mart, at Ithica in Robbins and Rite Aid in Carthage,

Coley; daughters, Jerrie Irby and Teresa Waller, both of Carthage; sisters, Joyce Mims of Havelock, Sherry Muse of Lakeview, Luanne Omatoe of Bakersville, Calif., Kay Tyner of Carthage; brothers, Billy Tyner of Orlando, Fla., Cecil Tyner of North Wilkesboro, Donald Tyner, Wayne Tyner and Phillip Tyner, all of Carthage; aunt, Lettie Rosser McNeill, by whom the deceased was raised; four grandchildren.

Rev. Donald L. Osborne
RANDLEMAN - The Rev. Donald Lee Osborne, 64, of 1110 Providence Church Road, died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Centre Friends Meeting, with the Rev. Max Rees, the Rev. John Porter and the Rev. Rusty Parsons officiating. Graveside service will follow in the Meeting cemetery.

He attended Guilford College and served as a Quaker pastor for 43 years, ministering at Rocky River, Jamestown, Marlboro, Concord, Prosperity, Cane Creek and Centre Friends Meetings. He was an active member of the N.C. Yearly Meeting, had served on the Board of Directors for the Sword of Peace, the N.C. Friends Historical Society, Friends Homes and chaired the N.C. Yearly Meeting Executive Committee, among others. He had chaired the Randolph County Board of Education, served as a member and chair of the Board of Directors for Quaker Lake Camp, and had served two terms on the Disciplinary Hearing Commission of the N.C. State Bar.

Surviving are wife, Virginia "Ginger" Bulla Osborne of the home; sons, Jay Lyndon Osborne and Lindley David Osborne, both of Raleigh; sister, Sally O. Cornwell of Asheboro; one granddaughter.

The family will be at Centre Friends Meeting Fellowship Hall, 6-8 p.m. Wednesday.

ROBBINS - The Rev. Richard Perkins Hayes, 77, of 230 Pinehurst St. and Pinelake Health & Rehab Center, Carthage, died Monday, Sept. 29, 2003.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, Robbins, where he was a member, with the Rev. Monty Brown officiating. Burial will be in Bensalem Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Eagle Springs, with military honors.

He was a native of Portsmouth, Va., a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II and a graduate of Davis-Elkin College, Elkin, W.Va., and Union Theological Seminary, Richmond, Va. His first ministry was in Glen Alpine. He was a former minister at Elise Presbyterian Church, Robbins, and at First Presbyterian Church, Spring Lake. He was the widower of Sebina Wheeler Hayes.

Surviving are wife, Janie Brown Hayes of Pinelake Health Center, Carthage; son, William "Billy" Hayes of Omaha, Neb.; daughters, Virginia H. Dahl of Bowie, Md., Laura Hayes of Franklin, Tenn., and Karen H. Reece of Robbins; stepsons, Jimmy Dickins of Cameron and Danny Dickins of Sanford; stepdaughter, Patricia Wicker of Tramway; brother, William Hayes of Norfolk, Va.; four grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren.

ROBBINS - Atlas E. Brower, 94, of 59 Bailey Way Road, Lillington, formerly of Robbins, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, at his home.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Friday at New Zion AME Zion Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Surviving are wife, Elton Brower of Lillington; brothers, George Talmage Brower and Lannie "Mac" Brower, both of Robbins, Roy Brower of Wilson and George Thomas Brower of Asheboro; sister, Cumi Maness of Wilmington, Del., and Nicy Slay of Asheboro.

John C. King Jr.
TROY - John Carson King Jr. died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, in Florence, S.C.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Troy First Baptist Church, where he was a member, with Dr. James B. Gibson and the Rev. Raleigh Castelloe officiating. Burial will be at Southside Cemetery.

He was a deacon, trustee, Sunday School teacher, moderator and a member of several committees at his church. He was a graduate of Troy High School, Edwards Military Academy and Wake Forest University. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a former member of the Town of Troy Board of Commissioners and Mayor pro tem. He was a past member of the Troy Lions Club, had served on the Montgomery County Rescue Squad for many years and was also involved in several businesses in the Troy area. His career in the insurance business and president of Montgomery federal Savings and Loan spans 50 years. He was the widower of Miriam Hurley King.

Surviving is sister, Helen King Nance of Florence, S.C.

The family will be at the Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, Troy, 6-7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Aliene R. Ross
GIBSONVILLE - Aliene R. Ross, 75, of 203 Sedalia Road, died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Smith Funeral Home, Moncure. Burial will be in Moncure Methodist Church Cemetery.

She was a native of Guilford County.

Surviving are daughter, Elizabeth E. Saunders of Gibsonville; son, Bari P. Ellington of Chico, Texas; sister, Louise Blackwood of Melbourne, Fla.; brother, Martin Hamilton Ross Jr. of Raleigh; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

Jim D. Sanderford
NEW HILL - Jim Dee Sanderford, 83, of 5815 Old U.S. 1, died September 2003 at his home.

Private graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Sanderford Family Cemetery, Clayton, with the Rev. Mack Fowler officiating.

He was a native of Johnston County.

Surviving is brother, L.A. Sanderford of Clayton.

Smith Funeral Home, Moncure, is in charge of arrangements.

Wade B. Hampton
ELKIN - Wade Bryant Hampton, 85, of CC Camp Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, at Elkin Healthcare.

Funeral service will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Friendship Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Jonah Parker and the Rev. Wesley Smith officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Surry County and secretary/treasurer of the Adult Men's Sunday School class at his church. He was retired from Chatham Manufacturing and was a former member of the Board of Education for Elkin City Schools.

Surviving are wife, Dovie Coe Hampton of the home; sons, Benny Hampton, Dwayne Hampton and Terry Hampton, all of Elkin; brother, Eugene Hampton of Elkin; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Hodges Funeral Home, Elkin, 6-8 p.m. Wednesday.

Miriam O. Cook
ORANGEBURG, S.C. - Miriam Owens Cook, 70, died Monday, Sept. 29, 2003, at her home.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Dukes-Harley Funeral Home, Orangeburg, S.C., with Dr. Terry Peele officiating.

She was a native of Orangeburg and attended Winthrop College. She was a graduate of the Medical University of South Carolina School of Nursing and a retired Registered Nurse from The Regional Medical Center. She was a former director of the Orangeburg School of Nursing and former Director of Nursing of Jolley Acres Nursing Home. She was a past Regent of the Moultrie Chapter D.A.R. and served as Past State Corresponding Secretary, Recording Secretary, Registrar and Chairman of Genealogical records. She was a member of First Baptist Church.

Surviving are husband, James Ray Cook of the home; sons, James Ray Cook Jr. of Charlotte and William Riley Cook of Orangeburg; daughter, Lori Clark of Asheboro; mother, Mary Nell L. Owens of Orangeburg, S.C.; brother, Robert S. Owens Jr. of Cross Hill, S.C.; five grandchildren.

The family will be at Dukes-Harley Funeral Home, Orangeburg, S.C., 6-8 p.m. Wednesday; other times at the home.

Jack Pugh Jr.
ASHEBORO - Jesse Thomas "Jack" Pugh Jr., 81, of 330 W. Presnell St., Asheboro, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, in Little River, S.C.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, where he was a member, with Dr. Everett Thomas officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.

He was a native of Asheboro and past president and owner of Pugh Funeral Homes. He served on the City of Asheboro Planning Board, Randolph County Aging Services Planning Committee, Randolph County Senior Adult Association Board and the NC Senior Citizens Association Board. He served two terms in the North Carolina General Assembly as a representative for Randolph County, and as the representative for Randolph County in the NC Senior Tar Heel Legislature. He was a member and former president of the North Carolina Funeral Directors Association, where he received an honorary lifetime membership, a member and past president of the Asheboro Kiwanis Club, a recipient of their Legion of Honor award, a thirty-second degree Mason and Shriner and a World War II U.S. Navy veteran.

Surviving are daughter, Elizabeth P. Jones of High Point; sons, Tom Pugh of Ruffin, Mac Pugh and Ed Pugh, both of Asheboro; sisters, Josephine P. Woestendiek of Winston-Salem, Edna Faye P. Cobb of Raleigh; four grandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 6-8 p.m. Thursday.

Rona S. Fields
CLIMAX - Rona Sheron Fields, 90, of 7157 Charnel Lane, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2003, at her home.

Funeral service will be 2:30 p.m. Friday at Bethlehem United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Ronald Doub, the Rev. Charles Rowland and the Rev. Linda Greene officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Millboro, the widow of Kenneth Fields, a former employee at Pleasant Garden Drug, Blue Bell Inc. and Lane's Laundry. She was a sitter with the elderly, a member of the Sunshine Class at her church and she attended Burnetts Chapel Senior Community Center.

Surviving are daughters, Jeanette Fields and Frances Fields, both of the home; son, Frank Fields of Climax; sister, Annie Greene of Greensboro; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday.
