ASHEBORO - Loretta Agnes Atkinson Hughes, 81, of 218 Eckerd St., Asheboro, died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, at her residence.

Graveside services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, at Randolph Memorial Park, Asheboro, with Father Joseph Mack officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be Steven Thompson, Michael Thompson, Jeffrey Thompson, Horace Thompson, William Pearson, Branson Pearson, Christopher Pearson and Russell Street.

A native of Revere, Mass., Mrs. Hughes was born Nov. 18, 1922, to the late Joseph and Mary Haumann Atkinson. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Her husband, Walter B. Hughes, and son, John David Hughes, preceded Mrs. Hughes in death.

She is survived by her daughters, Judith Garner of Asheboro, Faye Street of Glade Spring, Va., Brenda Turner of Staley, Msgt. Loretta "Pandi" Carstens of Bellevue, Neb.; sons, Everette Hughes of Franklinville, Joe Paul Hughes of Morehead City, Eddie Hughes of Asheboro, Larry Hughes of Franklinville, Robert Hughes of Asheboro; sister, Grace Manfere of Georgetown, Texas; brother, Richard "Dick" Atkinson, of Agawam, Mass.; 31 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, on Thursday, Nov. 20 from 7-9 p.m., other times at the home.

Lavonia C. Dunker
CAIRO, Ill. - Lavonia Elizabeth Caldwell Dunker, 94, died Thursday, Nov. 13, 2003, at the Day Star Health Care Center in Cairo, Ill. Lavonia was born March 14, 1909, in Blandville, KY., to the late Kenneth and Effie Caldwell.

The funeral service was conducted on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 1 p.m. at the Tigert Memorial United Methodist Church in Cairo, where she was a member. She committed her life to Jesus Christ at the age of 34, along with her husband and other family members, during a Methodist revival meeting. For 60 years she was active in her local church and extended the hand of mercy to troubled and destitute people.

She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Joseph Dunker, and an infant daughter, Shirley, her first child.

Surviving children are Joe K. Dunker of South Fulton, Tenn., Carl F. Dunker of Asheboro, Jack A. Dunker of Belknap, Ill., Wilbur B. Dunker of Paducah, Ky., Kay D. Niestrath of Villa Ridge, Ill., Mary D. Edmonds of Anna, Ill., Judith D. Wadley of Mounds,Ill.; 18 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; plus daughters-in-law and sons-in-law.

Barkett Funeral Home in Cairo, Ill., was in charge of arrangements. Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, furnished the information.

Cleven R. Harris
ASHEBORO - Cleven Rufus Harris, 69, of 400 Vision Drive, Asheboro, died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Wesley Chapel A.M.E. Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. John Butler officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Calvery Cemetery.

He was a native of Scotland County and a former employee with Randolph Hospital and Harrelson Rubber Company.

Surviving are sons, Jonathan Spencer and Steve Matthews, both of Asheboro, Jeffery Matthews of Seagrove; daughters, Veronica McCullough and Valerie Darden, both of Greensboro, Suzette Spencer of Lorain, Ohio, Annette Matthews of Seagrove; sisters, Ruthie M. Newton of Marston, Lola Miles of Durham, Hattie P. Isley of Snow Camp, Ernestine Harris of Carthage, Irene Monroe of McCain, Doris Ferguson of Greensboro, Rose Anna Pegues of Laurinburg; brother, Charlie Harris of Marston; 12 grandchildren.

The family will be at the church 1:30-2 p.m. prior to the service on Saturday, other times at the home of Jonathan Spencer, 240 E. Wainman Ave., Asheboro.

Lanie E. Garner
ROBBINS - Lanie Edward Garner, 63, of 160 Delaney Drive, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Flint Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. William Hancock and Pastor Gary Melchin officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Moore County and a self-employed carpenter.

Surviving are sons, Eddie L. Garner and Edwin D. Garner, both of Robbins; daughters, Amy G. Purvis of Highfalls, Angela Hastings of Seagrove; brothers, Wintford Garner of Michigan, Newby Garner of Carthage, Lanie Junior Garner of Highfalls, Quimby Garner of Robbins; sisters, Loucille Carter of Robbins, Maggie Ruth Garner of Carthage; four grandchildren.

The family will be at Kennedy Funeral Home, Robbins, 7-9 p.m. Friday, other times at the home.

Rev. Luther Evans
WILSON - The Rev. Luther Evans, 91, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2003.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Pentecostal Lighthouse Church, Elm City, with the Rev. Shawn Garnett and the Rev. James Ellis officiating. Entombment will be in Evergreen Memorial Park.

He was a Pentecostal minister, founder of Pentecostal Lighthouse Church and a retired employee of James I. Miller Tobacco Company.

Surviving are daughters, Rose Evans Sutton and Mildred Louise "Snookie" Bennett, both of Elm City, Joanne Garnett Ellis of Asheboro; half brother, Albert Evans of Rocky Mount; six grandchildren; one stepgrandchild; nine great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the church 6-8:30 p.m. Friday, other times at 4408 London Church Road, Elm City,

GREENVILLE - Frances White Davis, 85, of 2715 Dickinson Ave., died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, at her home.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Sechrest Funeral Service, Archdale, with the Rev. David Cunha officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church Cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County, a homemaker and a member of Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church.

Surviving are daughter, Kathy Brown of Green-ville; sister, Rachel Brown of Sophia; brother, Lester White of Trinity; two grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 10-11 a.m. prior to the service on Friday.

RANDLEMAN - Gary Robert Leach, 57, of 6602 Holder Inman Road Ext., died Friday, Nov. 21, 2003, at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.

Graveside service 2 p.m. Monday at Randolph Memorial Park, with the Rev. Mark Hurt officiating.

He was a native of Randleman, an employee with Commonwealth Hosiery Mill, Randleman, and a member of First Baptist Church, Randleman.

Surviving are wife, Mary Frances Leach of Randleman; sons, Gary Leach Jr. of Asheboro, Scott Leach of Winston-Salem; four granddaughters.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Randleman, 6-8 p.m. Sunday.

Kelvin L. Burnett
GREENSBORO - Kelvin Lamorn Burnett, 23, of 4810 Lawndale Drive, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2003, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Oakland Baptist Church, Ramseur.

Surviving are son, Jaedyn Burnett of Asheboro; parents, Keith and Nancy Burnett of Ramseur; sister, Tiffany Burnett of Ramseur; grandparents, Bobby and Nancy Goldston of Asheboro, Jacqueline Johnson of Graham.

The family will be at the church 6:30-7:30 p.m. Saturday.

SILER CITY - David Earl "Dave" Wicker, 60, of 2754 Flint Ridge Road, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2003, at Veteran's Hospital, Durham.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, with the Rev. Paul Shrum officiating. Burial will be in Flint Ridge United Methodist Church Cemetery.

He was a native of Chatham County, a U.S. Army veteran of Vietnam and a farmer.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Saturday, other times at the home of nephew, Maurice Wicker, 548 R.C. Overman Road, Siler City.

Hank Wilson
SILER CITY - Hank Wilson, 67, of 63 Hanks Drive, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2003, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Rocky River Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Greg W. Burriss officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Chatham County, a member of the Men's Bible Sunday School Class and chairman of the Grounds Committee at his church and the retired owner and operator of Hank's TV.

Surviving are daughters, Crystal W. Lindley of Siler City, Sylvia W. Worsham of Acworth, Ga., Judy W. Chriscoe of West End, Rita W. Calhoun of Southern Pines; brothers, Roland Wilson and Bobby Wilson, both of Goldston; sisters, Beatrice W. Brewer of Bennett, Shirley W. Rives of Bear Creek; eight grandchildren.

The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-9 p.m. Saturday, other times at the home of Crystal W. Lindley, 256 Fellowship Church Road, Siler City.

Harry M. Bryant
WINSTON-SALEM - Harry Marion Bryant, 76, of 4333 Gumtree Road, Winston-Salem, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2003, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.

Funeral service will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Wallburg Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Les Puryear and Dr. Brooks Hunt officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Surry County, a retired employee of Western Electric after almost 30 years and a member of the Senior Citizens Friendly Club of his church and the Sunshine Senior Citizens of northern Davidson County. He was a member of the N.C. National Guard, the Wallburg Lions Club and the Wallburg Volunteer Fire Department. He previously volunteered with the Home Delivered Meals Program in Davidson County and served on the Davidson County Senior Services Advisory Board. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, the Wallburg Recreation Center, the CWA-3060 Local and the CWA-AFL-CIO.

Surviving are wife, Jessie Bunker Bryant of the home; daughters, Rebecca Payne of Raleigh, Kathy Proctor of Thomasville; sons, David Bryant of Asheboro, Sam Bryant of Winston-Salem; foster daughter, Mary Lou Seward of Winston-Salem; sisters, Betty Culler, Opal Hill and Zelphia Wright, all of Pilot Mountain; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two foster grandchildren; three foster great-grandchildren.

The family will be at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home, Wallburg, 7-9 p.m. Saturday, other times at the home.

ROBBINS - Elma Davis Garner, 74, of 356 Sunset Drive, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2003, at Autumn Care of Biscoe.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Smyrna United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Jimmy Weaver officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Moore County, a member of the Ladies Sunday School Class at her church and a homemaker.

Surviving are sons, Donald Garner of Robbins, Chuck Garner of Coleridge; daughter, Beth Purvis of Norwood; six grandchildren.

Alton L. Cagle Sr.
YORKTOWN, Va. - Alton Lewis Cagle Sr., 72, of 121 Persimmon Drive, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2003.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Monday in Oaklawn Cemetery, Asheboro, with the Rev. Russell Chrisco officiating.

He was a native of Montgomery County, a retired principal of the Hampton City Schools and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.

Surviving are wife, Jacqueline Cagle; daughter, Debbie L. Hoopingarner of Gloucester, Va.; son, Alton "Scooter" Cagle II of Gloucester, Va.; mother, Bertha K. Cagle of Asheboro; brother, Terry K. Cagle of Greenville, N.C.; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

The family will be at Amory Funeral Home, Grafton, Va., 3-4 p.m. Sunday, other times at the home.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Bethel Baptist Church, with the Rev. Joe Brown, the Rev. Claude Byerly and the Rev. Jody Harrison officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Danville, Va., a retired employee of Jockey International and a former employee of Randolph Mills. He was a graduate of Limestone College in Gaffney, S.C., and a member, deacon and former Sunday School teacher at Hill Top Baptist Church.

Surviving are wife, Stella Kindley Edwards of the home; daughters, Betty Mann Grubb of Laurens, S.C., Dorothy R. Hernandez of Seagrove; son, Donald W. Edwards of Asheboro; sister, Daisy Edwards Gray of Franklinville; brother, Wilbur Edwards of Franklinville; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.

HIGH POINT - Leland Dempsey "Lee" Evans, 70, of 307 Green Oak Drive, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2003, at the VA Medical Center, Durham.

Graveside service with military honors will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at National Cemetery in Salisbury.

He was a native of Guilford County, a retired surveyor and a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict.

Surviving are daughter, Debbie Whitesell of McLeansville; son, Robert Evans of Thomasville; sister, Bobbie Marshall of Greensboro; five grandchildren.

The family will be at the home 2-5 p.m. Sunday.

BISCOE - Waverly Reid Ray, 77, of 401 Lambert Road, died Friday, Nov. 21, 2003, at FirstHealth Montgomery Memorial Hospital, Troy.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Biscoe Cemetery, with the Rev. Jimmy Shirlen officiating.

He was a native of Montgomery County and a retired truck driver.

Surviving are daughter, Sue Davis of Mt. Gilead; son, Wesley Ray of Star; sister, Violet Lafell of Biscoe; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Phillips Funeral Home, Star, 6-8 p.m. Sunday.

CARTHAGE - Joan Matthews Pate, 63, of 511 Dowd St., died Saturday, Nov. 22, 2003, at her home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Red Hill Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. James C. Baldwin and the Rev. Daryl Stancil officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Moore County, the widow of Leonard Pate and a former nurse's aid at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital.

Surviving are daughters, Tonya Pate, Sandra Pate and Sharon Pratt, all of Carthage; sisters, Mildred Hooker of Carthage, Bernice Jordan of Washington, D.C.; half sister, Yvonne Williams of Chicago, Ill.; brother, Jethro Matthews of Carthage; five grandchildren.

The family will be Fry & Prickett Funeral Home, Carthage, 6-8 p.m. Tuesday.

Robert E. Britt
ASHEBORO - Robert Edward Britt, 75, of 307 Independence Drive, Asheboro, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2003, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Randolph Memorial Park.

He was a native of Moore County, the widower of Carrie Greene Britt, a member of First United Methodist Church and a former employee of Dixie Furniture, Caraway Furniture and Blue Mist Restaurant.

Surviving are stepdaughter, Linda Fay Greene of Asheboro; stepson, Paul Edwin Greene of Niceville, Fla.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, noon-1:30 p.m. Wednesday, prior to the service.
