Helen Styers Ragsdale will be remembered by many, many people whose lives she touched. She lived her faith each day and shared it by her example of kindness and service to others and her church.

When Helen graduated from Asheboro High School, she started her career as a buyer and bookkeeper at Hudson Belk's. Even at this early age she was teaching a Sunday school class at Brower's Chapel United Methodist Church, which she continued to teach until her mother and father in advanced age became disabled. Helen served as the superintendent of the Sunday school, choir member, charter member and president of the Women's Society. The well-known reputation for outstanding church suppers at Brower's Chapel was earned to a great extent because of Helen's contribution as a superior cook.

When World War II started, she and her husband moved to Suffolk, Va., where he worked in the shipyard. Helen became a nurse's aide at the nearby hospital, where she worked until the birth of their first son. When Delbert went into the Navy, she returned to Asheboro. After the end of the war, a second son was born.

Helen started catering from her kitchen. She specialized in beautiful wedding cakes and furnished them for hundreds if not thousands of young couples starting their married lives. Many people would stop by her house on Saturday mornings and pick up boxed lunches to take for tailgating at nearby college football games. At her home there was always a table of food for anyone who would drop by.

Helen was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She made a difference in this world by the example she lived every day. We all know that the gates of Heaven will open wide for this new resident.

She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Delbert Gordon Ragsdale Sr.; two sons of Raeford, Gordon Ragsdale Jr. and wife Julianne, and Phillip Ragsdale and wife Jane; two granddaughters, Elizabeth R. Braswell and husband Keith of Southern Pines, and Susan Styers Ragsdale of Raleigh; one great-granddaughter, Katherine Hayes Braswell. Also surviving is one brother, Walter A. Styers Jr., Charlotte Hall, Md.; and one sister, Elmira Cooper and husband, Bernard of Bradenton, Fla.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home Saturday from 6-8 p.m. and other times at the home at 1819 U.S. 64 East, Asheboro.

A funeral service to celebrate her life will be held at Brower's Chapel United Methodist Church Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Brower's Chapel United Methodist Church in care of the Rev. Jeffrey Sypole, 1663 Plantation Circle, Asheboro, N.C. 27203 or any other charitable organization of your choice.
