ASHEBORO - Benjamin Keith Adams, 76, of 637 Tipton Drive, Asheboro, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at Randolph Hospital.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Cid United Methodist Church Cemetery with military honors, with the Rev. Lee Roy Hunt officiating.

He was a native of Davidson County, a retired employee of Stroupe Mirror in Thomasville and a World War II U.S. Army veteran and a recipient of the Army of Occupation Medal, Japan and the Victory Medal.

Surviving are son, Brian Adams of High Point; mother, Verna Crotts Adams of Denton; sister, Nell Adams of Thomasville; brothers, Bill Adams of Denton, Danny Adams of Colorado.

Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, is in charge of arrangements.

V. Don Haynie
WILLOW SPRINGS - V. Don Haynie, 61, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, with the Rev. Bill Dunnigan officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Denton.

He was a native of Madison County and a heavy equipment foreman with Burnup Sims Construction Company.

Surviving are wife, Julia "Judy" Strickland Haynie of the home; son, Dougie Haynie of Tiptonville, Tenn.; stepson, Dean Palmer of Lexington; daughters, Annette Hughes of Johnson City, Tenn., Donna King of Madison County; stepdaughter, Shanna Palmer Easter of Ft. Myers, Fla.; brothers, Glenn Shelton of Forest City, Dickie Haynie of Asheville, Clay Haynie of Tennessee; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home noon-2 p.m. Saturday, prior to the service, other times at the home of Gary Strickland, 3377 Summerville Church Road, Denton.

Peggy D. Inman
ASHEBORO - Peggy Davis Inman, 68, of 4846 N.C. 49 South, Asheboro, died Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, at her home.

Funeral service is 2 p.m. Wednesday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Thurman Williams officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

She was a Randolph County native and retired from John Plant Company, Ramseur.

Surviving are husband, Bobby Ray Inman of Asheboro; son, Mike Inman of Asheboro; two grandchildren; sisters, Virginia Auman and Bertie Cole, both of Seagrove, Dorthine Brown of Randleman, Evona Coble of Frank-linville, Sue Hackett of Conway, S.C.; brothers, Edgar Davis of Randleman, James Davis of Seagrove, R.J. Davis of Climax.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.

Joe Laughlin
FRANKLINVILLE - Joe Laughlin, 88, of 1195 Pineview Road, North Pointe, Randleman, formerly of Franklinville, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Whites Memorial Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jeff Joyce officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, a carpenter and he attended Whites Memorial Baptist Church.

Surviving is wife, Ila Mae Pore Laughlin of the home.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, 6-8 p.m. Tuesday.

James R. Wright Jr.
FRANKLINVILLE - James Riley "Rocky" Wright Jr., 46, died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, with the Rev. Steve Cox officiating.

He was a native of Randolph County and employee of the ABC Store in Randleman.

Surviving is sister, Melissa Schwent of Denver, Colo.

The family will be at the home of Maxine Benson, 3113 Cedar Falls Road, Franklinville.

Pearl B. Sullivan
THOMASVILLE - Pearl Susan Brown Sullivan, 94, of Mountain Vista Health Park, Denton, and formerly of Woodlawn Street, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, at Mountain Vista.

Graveside service is 2 p.m. Tuesday at Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery, with the Rev. Jack Stratas officiating. The body will remain at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home until the hour of service.

She was a native of Anderson, S.C., a member of First United Methodist Church and a former employee of Ragan Knitting Company. She was the widow of John M. Sullivan.

Surviving are daughters, Charlotte Henderson and Wanda Martin, both of Denton, Dottie Luther of Lexington; sisters, Elizabeth Leonard of Daytona, Fla., Mrs. Curtis Wilder of High Point; seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the home of daughter, Charlotte Henderson, 387 Greenbrier Drive, Denton.

Dee S. Fontes
ASHEBORO - Dee Struck Fontes, age 59, of 1073 Liberty Circle, Asheboro, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, at Randolph Hospital, Asheboro.

The funeral will be Saturday, Jan. 17, at Grapo-Hathaway Funeral Home Chapel in Taunton, Mass. Burial will be in Silver Lake Cemetery, Athol, Mass.

Mrs. Fontes was a native of Havre, Montana, and employed with Cleveland Twist Drill for 27 years. She loved to do arts and crafts.

She is survived by her husband of 28 years, Paul Fontes; son and daughter-in-law, Robert R. and Susan Pierce of Taunton, Mass.; son and daughter-in-law, Randall R. and Audrey Pierce of Berkley, Mass.; grandchildren, Ryan and Matthew Pierce of Taunton, Mass., Ross, Brook and Brenna Pierce of Berkley, Mass.; mother and stepfather, Priscilla and Pat Ross of Boise, Idaho; four sisters, Drew Kulm of Meridian, Idaho, Linda Jagger of Fedro Wolly, Wash., Cindy Scrizer of Boise, Idaho, Annette Casey of Bennett, Colo.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, Jan. 13, from 6-8 p.m. at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, and on Friday, Jan. 16 at Grapo-Hathway Funeral Home, Taunton, Mass.

Frances H. Spratt
CAROLEEN - Frances Holland Spratt, age 87, of Matthews, formerly of Caroleen, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, at Union Reg. Med. Ct.

Mrs. Spratt was a native of Spartanburg County, S.C., daughter of the late Herbert R. and Beulah May Mooney Holland. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert R. Spratt; a brother, Wallace "Buck" Holland; and a sister and her husband, Martha H. George and Alvis George.

Mrs. Spratt was a graduate of Tri-High School. She received an AB Degree in English and history from Winthrop University with honors of Distinguished Student, American Peace Award and South Atlantic Debate Champion. She was a member of Pi Kappa Delta, Delta Epsilon Alpha and did graduate work in psychology.

Mrs. Spratt has 35 years of service to young people as an English teacher. She began her teaching career at Columbia University School, Ellerbe, and then taught at Plant High School, Tampa, Fla., before returning to Rutherford County. She taught at Tri-High School for 20 years and at Chase High School for 12 years as chairman of the English department.

In addition to her love of history and literature, Frances Spratt will be remembered by her friends and family for her dedication to community service and her love for all young people. She made many contributions to her community. She was selected Woman of the Year in 1976, was a member of the Rutherford County Bicentennial Committee, Rutherford County Democratic Women, Human Relations Council, Tri-Community Woman's Club, education chairman of the Rutherford County Homemakers Coun- cil, a North Carolina Beta Club sponsor for more than 20 years, trustee at Isothermal Community College for 17 years and served two terms on the Rutherford County Library Board. She was an active member of Caroleen Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years. Frances had a great love of history. Quoting Frances, "I suppose my real interest began with my father, he read every biography be could find." She headed a committee of volunteers to put together a documentary on Rutherford County since its beginning in 1779, entitled "Rutherford Heritage." Again quoting Frances, "The joy is in finding so many little things that make life and history interesting."

Frances lived her early dream best summarized by the following poem, which was one of many poems that she wrote and kept in her journal.
If I can be one faint star,
Against the blue
If I can sing one sweet song
To help you through
Then I shall rest and be content,
Through all eternity.

Surviving are three nephews, Wallace Holland Jr. and wife Julie Holland, Robert George, Owen George; two nieces, Ann Holland Griffin and husband Wayne Griffin, Holly George-Warren and husband Robert Warren; great-nieces and great-nephews, Taylor Holland, Tyler Holland, Alan Griffin, Anna Griffin and Jack Warren; sister-in-law, Jean Holland.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, at the Caroleen Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Trey Gilliam and Dr. Jesse Yarbrough. Nephews and friends of the family will serve as pallbearers. Burial will be in the Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. Wednesday at Harrelson Funeral Home, Caroleen, prior to the service.

Garry D. Bailey
ASHEBORO - Garry Dean Bailey, 62, of 199 Rocky Knoll Road, Asheboro, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, at Randolph Hospital.

A private service will be held at a later date.

He was a Guilford County native and a retired brick mason. He was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are son, Dean Bailey of Greensboro; daughter, Tina Dimery of Lumberton; sister, Carolyn Hubbard of Asheboro; brothers, Ronald Bailey and Tommy Bailey, both of Asheboro; two grandchildren.

The family will be at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7-9 p.m. Friday.

Ruby L. Bailey
RANDLEMAN - Ruby Williams Luckado Bailey, 82, of Country Club Assisted Living, 1324 Coltrane Mill Road, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital.

Funeral service is 11 a.m. Thursday at Pugh Funeral Home, Randleman, with Pastor Jim Honeycutt officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

She was a Moore County native, a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. She was the widow of Ray Bailey.

Surviving are daughters, Janice Hamilton of Sophia, Etta Shockley of Randleman, Betty Whitaker of Sanford, Linda Wilson of Asheboro; sons, Warren Luckado of Randleman, Vernon Luckado of Greensboro; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Randleman, 6:30-8 p.m. Wed-nesday.

Alice C. Rajani
WILSON - Alice June Crane Rajani, 47, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004.

Funeral service is 2 p.m. Friday at Joyner's Funeral Home, Wilson, with the Rev. LaVon Phillips officiating. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery.

Surviving are husband, Mahemood J. Rajani; daughter, Amber Rajani Moore of Wilson; parents, Rev. and Mrs. Doyle Lafate Crane of Asheboro; sisters, Susan Crane of Asheboro, Linda Mosley of Indianola, Okla.; brothers, David Crane of Denton, Texas, Jeff Crane and Tony Crane, both of Asheboro.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Thursday; other times at 2906 Flower Drive, Wilson.

Frank B. Pearce
SILER CITY - Frank Brower Pearce, 69, of 101 South Third Ave., Siler City, died Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, at his residence.

Funeral service is 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 N. Second Ave., Siler City, with the Rev. Jerry Foley officiating. Burial will be in Community Baptist Church Cemetery, Siler City.

Mr. Pearce was a native of Chatham County, a Marine veteran and was retired from Vest Textiles and Machinery. He was a member of Chatham County Shriners and Mt. Vernon Lodge #146 AF & AM. Frank was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Beck Pearce.

Surviving are daughter, Carol P. Dark and husband, Johnny, of Siler City; son, Mark W. Pearce and wife, Pam, of Broadway; sister, Sue Phillips of Livonia, Mich.; brother, Clinton A. Pearce of Siler City, J. Neal Pearce of Asheboro; grandchildren, Caitlyn Dark, Matthew Pearce, Nathan Pearce; special friend and companion, Ruby Branson.

The family will be at the Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004; other times at the home of Carol P. Dark, 325 Bowden Road, Siler City.

Rev. James W. Williams
BURLINGTON - Rev. James Woodrow Williams, 81, of 504 W. Webb Ave., died Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, at Alamance Regional Medical Center. He was born in Stuart, Va., to the late Walter Greene Williams and the late Emma McBride Williams and was the husband to Evone Woodell Williams for 62 years.

Rev. Williams was a retired Pentecostal Holiness Minister after 38 years of service. He was the former pastor of Twin Oaks Pentecostal Holiness Church in Gibsonville, Macedonia Pentecostal Holiness Church in Vale, Bethel Pentecostal Holiness Church in Gladys, Va., Bethany Pentecostal Holiness Church in Appomattox, Va., and Elliott Memorial Pentecostal Holiness Church in Eden. He was a member of Trinity Worship Center, a World War II Army veteran and a member of the Corner Stone Pentecostal Holiness Conference.

Survivors, other than his wife of the home, include a daughter and son-in-law, Genell and Clyde Hicks of Kernersville; son, Jack Lee Williams of Danville, Va.; grandchildren and spouses, Renee and Gary Hughes, James and Karen McCaslin, Cherie and Calvin Arthur, Dwight Williams; stepgrandchildren and spouse, Ray and Carrie Hicks and Laura Harrington; great-grandchildren, Tina, Brandon, Breann, Kimberly, Kara, Chase and Chance; stepgreat-grandchildren, Daniel, Carlton, Justin and Tiffany; sisters, Tiayuana Jones of Asheboro, Bobbie Anderson of Hopewell, Va., Dorothy Sasser of Augusta, Ga. and Juanita Dezern of Holden Beach; brothers, Rev. Hubert Williams of Roanoke, Va., and Walter Williams of Danville, Va. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Rev. John Williams and Charlie Williams, sisters, Virginia Wade and Myrtle "Tony" Mack.

The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Worship Center by the Dr. Jimmy Gardner, the Rev. Tommy Fuquay, the Rev. Doyle Marley and the Rev. Billie Truesdale. The burial will follow in Randolph Memorial Park in Asheboro. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory, Burlington; other times at the home.

MT. GILEAD - Clyde Lee Tyson Jr., 63, of 878 N.C. 731, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, at Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Greene Cemetery, Candor, with the Rev. Nelson Wright officiating.

He was a native of Anson County and an employee of McRae Shoe Factory.

Surviving are wife, Catha Shepherd Tyson of the home; daughter, Tammy T. Hoover and husband, Ricky, of the home; sisters, Lois Thomas and Murrell Taylor, both of Charlotte, Rose Wycoff of Warne; grandson, Dale Hoover of the home.

MT. GILEAD - Carl Lee "Dooner" Dennis Jr., 75, of 422 S. Wadesboro Blvd., died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, at Stanly Memorial Hospital, Albemarle.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Sharon Cemetery, Mt. Gilead, with the Rev. Randy Jordan officiating.

He was a native of Montgomery County, a retired supervisor of West Knitting and a member of First Baptist Church.

Surviving is wife, Geraldine Thompson Dennis of the home.

The family will be at Edwards Funeral Home, Mt. Gilead, 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Carrie B. Atkins
TROY - Carrie Jane Boyle Atkins, 85, of 366 Beaman Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Long Hill Baptist Church, Candor, where she was a member, with the Rev. Larry Beaver and the Rev. Brad Williams officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County and a homemaker.

Surviving are sons, Clifton Atkins of Lexington, Roy Atkins and Larry Atkins, both of Troy; daughters, Pauline Lanier of Lexington, Christine Lanier of Denton, Joyce Greene, Lois Overby, Frances Sanders, Rosemary Freeman, Darlene Lucas, all of Troy; brother, Paul Hardister of Troy; sisters, Mary Lou Hinson and Betty Jo Hunsucker, both of Troy; 18 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, Troy, 7-9 p.m. Thursday, other times at the home.

Paul Hammond
ASHEBORO - Clifford Paul Hammond, age 82, of 3139 High Pine Church Road, Asheboro, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.

Mr. Hammond was a native of Chatham County, a World War II U.S. Army veteran and self-employed.

The funeral will be Friday, Jan. 16, at 2 p.m. at Pugh Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Garry L. Reeder officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park, Asheboro.

He is survived by his wife, Ethel Bischer Hammond; daughter, Debra L. "Debbie" Hammond of Asheboro; son, Ronald P. "Ronnie" Hammond of Asheboro; granddaughter, Tina Hammond of Greensboro; sisters, Elizabeth Russell of Thomasville, Earlene Nelson and Lula Mae Surratt, both of Asheboro.

He was a Randolph County native and a retired textile worker. He was the widower of Claire Russell Nance.

Surviving are daughter, Lana Marie Smith of Siler City; son, Neil R. Nance of Albemarle.
