SEAGROVE - Howard Ernest Maness, 79, of 374 Yow Drive, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital.

Funeral service is 2 p.m. Saturday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro. Burial will be in New Hope Memorial Gardens.

He was a Randolph County native and retired from Fox Apparel.

Surviving are wife, Thada Marie Staley Maness; son, Michael Howard Maness of Asheboro; daughters, Kathy Maness Humble, Doris Maness Butcher and Pamela Maness Hayes, all of Seagrove; brothers, Ellis Maness of Franklinville, Cecil Maness of Cedar Falls, Hurley Maness, Harvey Lee Maness and Nolen Maness, all of Asheboro; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Friday.

Leona H. Hancock
TROY - Leona Haywood Hancock, 55, of 245 Oscar Road, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, at FirstHealth Montgomery Memorial Hospital.

Funeral service is 2 p.m. Saturday at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Mt. Gilead, with the Rev. Gary Rutherford officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a Montgomery County native and employed at Capel Inc.

Surviving are husband, Millard Paul "Mickey" Hancock of the home; brother, Lester Sam Haywood of Mt. Gilead.

The family will be at Phillips Funeral Home, Star, 7-9 p.m. Friday; other times at the home of the brother at 931 N.C. 109 South, Mt. Gilead.

Carrie B. Atkins
TROY - Carrie Jane Hardister Atkins, 85, of 366 Beaman Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Long Hill Baptist Church, Candor, where she was a member, with the Rev. Larry Beaver and the Rev. Brad Williams officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County and a homemaker.

Surviving are sons, Clifton Atkins of Lexington, Roy Atkins and Larry Atkins, both of Troy; daughters, Pauline Lanier of Lexington, Christine Lanier of Denton, Joyce Greene, Lois Overby, Frances Sanders, Rosemary Freeman, Darlene Lucas, all of Troy; brother, Paul Hardister of Troy; sisters, Mary Lou Hinson and Betty Jo Hunsucker, both of Troy; 18 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren.

Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, Troy, is in charge of arrangements.

Lloyd S. Williams
MT. GILEAD - Lloyd Smith Williams, 93, of 1142 Wadeville Road, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, at Forest Oaks Healthcare, Albemarle.

Funeral service is 1 p.m. Saturday at Wadeville United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Glen Hancock officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a Montgomery County native and retired from N.C. Department of Transportation as a road maintenance foreman.

Surviving are Thelma Maske Williams of the home; sons, Frank Williams of Hickory, Jerry Williams of Mt. Gilead; daughter, Alice Lee Walter of Norwood; brother, Lock Williams of Mt. Gilead; sister, Lois Dennis of Albemarle; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Edwards Funeral Home, Mt. Gilead, 6-8 p.m. Friday.

Mildred C. Hicks
SILER CITY - Mildred Elizabeth Coggins Hicks, 88, of 1011 South Chatham Ave., Siler City, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, at SunBridge Care Facilities, Siler City. Mrs. Hicks was born Nov. 10, 1915, the daughter of the late Archie Dewitt Coggins and Elizabeth Florence Edwards Coggins.

She was a native of Moore County and a member of Moon's Chapel Baptist Church where she was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class and served as secretary. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Hicks.

She is survived by one son, Charles D. Hicks and wife, Barbara, of Siler City; granddaughters, Denise H. Suits of Staley, Gay Hicks of Siler City, Cathy H. Fields of Siler City; great-grandchildren, Matt Phillips, Brandon Fields, Chris Suits and Cassie Suits.

The family will receive friends Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Ave., Siler City; other times at the home of Charles and Barbara Hicks, 106 East Nelson St., Siler City. The funeral will be Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Moon's Chapel Baptist Church, 175 Moons Chapel Road, Siler City, with the Rev. Scott Faw and the Rev. Garland Bordeaux officiating. Burial will follow in Moon's Chapel Baptist Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Moon's Chapel Baptist Church Building Fund, 175 Moons Chapel Road, Siler City, N.C. 27344.

Lucille F. Cox
ASHEBORO - Lucille Forrester Cox, 98, formerly of South Park Street, Asheboro, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at Moses H. Cone Extended Care, Greensboro.

Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Michael Holder officiating.

She was a native of Ramseur, the widow of W. Tom Cox and a homemaker. She was a member of the choir and the United Methodist Women's Circle at her church, the last charter member of the Reviewers Book Club and a member of the Dogwood Garden Club.

Surviving are sons, James T. Cox of Greensboro, W. Howard Cox of Lexington; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 224 N. Fayetteville St., Asheboro, N.C. 27203.

RAMSEUR - Sandra C. Heckman-Fries, 55, of 5216 Erect Road, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, at her home.

Funeral service was 7:30 p.m. Monday at Shiloh Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bruce McLanahan and the Rev. David Schwartz officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Sandusky, Ohio, a social worker for Randolph Hospital and Home Health Care and she attended Shiloh Baptist Church.

Surviving is husband, Ted Fries of the home.

Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, is in charge of arrangements.

Bessie L. McDowell
DENTON - Bessie Loflin McDowell, 87, of Mountain Vista Health Park, formerly of Lick Creek Road, Denton, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, at Mountain Vista.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Lick Creek Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Hulon Pait officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Davidson County, the widow of Henry McDowell and a former employee of Surratt Hosiery Mill.

Surviving are sister, Pauline Loflin Hall of Greensboro; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday.

Violet R. LaFell
BISCOE - Violet Ray LaFell, 82, of 405 Arrow Trail, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at her home.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Biscoe Cemetery, with Dr. Bruce Dickerson officiating.

She was a native of Montgomery County and a retired employee of Montgomery Hosiery.

Surviving are daughters, Betty Parsons of Biscoe, Deanne McHaffie of Saskatoon, Canada, Debbie Jenkins of Beaverton, Ore.; sons, Ed LaFell of West End, James LaFell of Beaverton, Ore.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the home of Betty Parsons, 619 Brooks St., Biscoe.

Phillips Funeral Home, Star, is in charge of arrangements.

Charlie E. Lewis Jr.
EAGLE SPRINGS - Charlie Edgar Lewis Jr., 45, of Candor Road, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at FirstHealth Montgomery Memorial Hospital, Troy.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Candor United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Bill Mitchell officiating. Burial will be in Candor Cemetery.

He was a native of Moore County, a member of Candor Lions Club and vice president of field operations with Myrick Construction Company.

Surviving are wife, Robin Reynolds Lewis of the home; daughters, Amy Lynn Lewis and Sarah Ruth Lewis, both of the home; stepson, Jeffrey Bryan Reynolds of the home; mother, Doris Comer Lewis of Eagle Springs.

The family will be at Briggs-Candor Funeral Home, Candor, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home.

John C. Breedlove
MONCURE - John Coy Breedlove, 80, of Old Sanford Road, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at Rex Hospital in Raleigh.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Chatham Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Lee Edwards officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military rites.

He was a native of Randolph County, the widower of Earline Reeves Breedlove and a World War II U.S. Navy veteran. He was a former employee of Cycle Oil in Sanford and a retired employee of Allied Chemical (now Honeywell) in Moncure.

Surviving are sons, Jimmy Breedlove and Johnny Breedlove, both of Pittsboro; daughters, Barbara Jean Breedlove of Pittsboro, Kathy Ann Dixon of Siler City, Angela Deal of Olivia; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Griffin Funeral Service and Cremation, Pittsboro, 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Roy G. Martin
CARTHAGE - Roy G. Martin, 86, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Fry & Prickett Funeral Home, Carthage, with the Rev. Don Gillis officiating. Burial will be in Cross Hill Cemetery.

He was a native of Clay County, the widower of Eleanor P. Martin, a World War II U.S. Army veteran and a retired loom fixer at Carthage Fabrics Corp.

Surviving are daughters, Mary Jane Grimm and Carol Williams, both of Carthage, Gale Blue of Winston-Salem, Ann Hawkins of Columbia, S.C., Sharon Boddeker of Aurora, Colo., Alicia Honeycutt of Southern Pines; sister, Flora Carlton of Spartanburg, S.C.; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the home of Roy and Carol Williams, 1196 S. McNeill St., Carthage, and at the funeral home following the service on Wednesday.

James E. Westbrook
NEWTON GROVE - James Earl Westbrook, 82, of 6531 Harper House Road, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2004.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mill Creek Christian Church, with the Rev. Jack Anglin officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was the widower of Ada Cole Westbrook.

Surviving are daughters, Edna Brown of Raleigh, Faye Vann of Asheboro; son, Ray Westbrook of Faison; sister, Hazel Raynor of Raleigh; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at West & Dunn Funeral Home, Newton Grove, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.

Joyce H. Cox
ASHEBORO - Joyce Hudson Cox, 84, formerly of 539 W. Kivett St., Asheboro, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at Grace Hospital in Morganton.

A lifelong resident of Randolph County, she was born Nov. 2, 1919, in Franklinville. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Wesley Cox, whom she had married in 1940.

Joyce Cox is survived by son, James Wesley Cox Jr. of Charlotte; daughter, Amy L. Cox and her husband, Robert Gage; grandchildren Rachel, Olivia and Jackson Gage of Morganton.

Mrs. Cox was a member of First United Methodist Church of Asheboro and had been employed by Pugh Oil Company, Asheboro, until her retirement. She was one of nine children of Mary Etta and Abe Hudson, of whom three survive her: Mary Alice Nichols of Fayetteville, Ga., Stella Neely of Asheboro, and Herman Hudson of Greensboro. She was predeceased by sisters, Mae Pilkinton, Myrtle LaCroix, Pearl West, Anne Forbes and brother, Harris Hudson.

The funeral service will be led by Rev. Martha Welch at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, at First United Methodist Church in Asheboro.

The family will receive friends from 10:30-11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. A meal will be shared following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Asheboro Senior Center, 133 W. Wainman Ave., Asheboro, N.C. 27204 or Humane Society of Randolph County, P.O. Box 4384, Asheboro, N.C. 27204.

RAMSEUR - Jane Grimmett Roseberry, 67, of 5361 Brookhaven Road, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, at her home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Church of God, Bruno, W.Va. Burial will be in Grimmett and Browning Family Cemetery, Bruno, W.Va.

She was a native of Man, W.Va., a homemaker and a member of the YHWH Assembly in Durham.

Surviving are daughters, Leona Meadows and Kay Callahan, both of Ramseur, Linda Midkiff of Clinton, Okla.; sons, Franklin Lee Pack of Jefferson, Tenn., David Callahan of Ramseur; sisters, Lydia Goodman and Mable Fobert, both of Man, W.Va.; brothers, Buddy "Ross" Grimmett, Russell Grimmett, Kenny Grimmett, Earnest Grimmett, all of Man, W.Va.; 14 grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

The family will be at the church noon-2 p.m. Friday, other times at Krantz-McNeely Funeral Home in Man, W.Va.

John M. Brady Sr.
JAMESTOWN - John "Jim" M. Brady Sr., 65, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, at High Point Regional Cancer Center.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Oakview Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Steve Smith officiating. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery.

He was a native of Asheboro, a retired employee of Sara Lee Direct of Winston-Salem and a former employee of Data Masters of Greensboro. He was a member of the Sunday School at his church and a former volunteer for Mobile Meals.

Surviving are wife, Linda Rodden Brady of the home; daughters, Lori B. Richardson of High Point, Kandi B. Batten of Jamestown; son, John Brady Jr. of Charlotte; three grandsons.

The family will be at the church 11:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Thursday, prior to the service.

MT. GILEAD - Samuel Jeffrey "Jeff" Gentry, 41, of 1623 Thickety Creek Road, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, at his home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Jim Harris officiating. Burial will be in Sharon Cemetery.

He was a native of Robeson County, a U.S. Air Force veteran and a heating and air installer.

Surviving are wife, Allison Greene Gentry of the home; sons, Jesse Gentry, Jackson Gentry and Joseph Gentry, all of the home; father and stepmother, Samuel Jackson Gentry and Judy Deese Gentry of Mt. Gilead; mother and stepfather, Virginia Hales Long and Harold Long of Troy; sister, Jaye Ballard of Mt. Gilead.

The family will be at Edwards Funeral Home, Mt. Gilead, 6-8 p.m. Wednesday.

CANDOR - Leo Bowden Sr., 69, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Church of God and Prophecy, Norman, with Minister Craven officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Candor.

Surviving are wife, Thelma S. Bowden of the home; daughter, Velma M. Hailey of West End; sons, Leo Bowden Jr. and Jerry Lee Bowden, both of Candor, Michael Lee Bowden and Daniel Anthony Bowden, both of the home; sister, Evon Pegues of Candor; brother, James Willie Bowden of Candor; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Bostic Funeral Home, Candor, 7-8 p.m. Wednesday.

S. Wayne Harris
CARTHAGE - S. Wayne Harris, 60, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, at his home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Fairview Baptist Church, with the Rev. Don Gillis and the Rev. Fred Richardson officiating. Burial will be in the Harris Family Cemetery.

He was a native of Moore County and a tobacco farmer in Moore County.

Surviving are wife, Sarah Owens Harris; daughter, Janet H. Babaa of Charlotte; stepdaughter, Sandra Joy Talbert of West End; stepsons, Earnest Donald Owens of West End, Ronald Wayne Owens of Wilson; mother, Ercie C. Harris of Pinehurst; sisters, Betty H. Childers of New York, N.Y., Virginia Dale Kidd of Nephi, Utah; two grandsons.

The family will be at Fry & Prickett Funeral Home, Carthage, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.
