J.D. Ross Jr.
Joseph Dewese Ross Jr., 87, of 139 S. Main St., Asheboro, died Monday, Sept. 28, 1998, in the Skilled Nursing Division of Alamance Regional Medical Center, Burlington.

A graveside service will be 4 p.m. Friday at the Ross family mausoleum in Asheboro City Cemetery, with the Rev. Chris Thore and Pastor Art Ross officiating.

He was a native of Asheboro, the widower of Ruth Hughes Simpson Ross, attended the University of North Carolina and Pierce School of Business and was employed with J.D. Ross & Company. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church where he served as chairman of the Official Board, was treasurer of the High Point Methodist District and was a trustee of Methodist Children's Home. He served as national president of the Theta Chi college fraternity, was a director of the National Interfraternity Council and a director of the Asheboro-Randolph Chamber of Commerce and the Randolph Historical Association. He was a trustee of Randolph Community College, a North Carolina delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1948 and served on the North Carolina Democratic Executive Committee. He was a member of Asheboro Rotary Club where he was a president and 1975 Paul Harris Fellow, served two terms as District Governor of Rotary International and was on the membership development committee of Rotary International. He was appointed by two former governors, Dan Moore and Bob Scott, to the N.C. Employment Security Commission. He was a member of Balfour Masonic Lodge, a charter member of Asheboro Elks Lodge #1694 where he served as treasurer of the corporation, chairman of the Asheboro City Cemetery Committee, a director of Farmers Mutual Insurance Association and a director of P&P Chair Company.

Surviving are daughter, Susan Dail Ross-Parks of Burlington; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the home Thursday and Friday.

Memorials may be made to Central United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 300 S. Main St., Asheboro, N.C. 27203 or to the North Carolina Zoological Society Memorial Fund, 4403 Zoo Parkway, Asheboro, N.C. 27203.

Glenda C. Heaton

Glenda Cranford Heaton, 33, of 2518 Old Humble Mill Road, Asheboro, died Monday, Sept. 28, 1998, at her home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Flag Springs United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Larry Stines officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County, a U.S. Army veteran, a member of Parks Crossroads Independent Christian Church, formerly employed with Zeko's Pizza and a partner with H & H Siding.

Surviving are husband, Bobby Heaton of Asheboro; son, Benjamin Graham Cox of the home; daughter, Taylor Marie Heaton of the home; mother, Louise Cranford of Asheboro; sister, Donna Chriscoe of Seagrove; brothers, Charles Fields, Roy Fields, both of High Point.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.

Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.

William E. Brower

William Edward Brower, 76, of Cross Road Retirement Community, Asheboro, died Tuesday, Sept. 29, 1998, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, with the Rev. Jack Kivett officiating. Burial will be in Grays Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County.

Surviving are brother, Bruce Brower of Asheboro; sister, Rachel Parrish of Lexington.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Rachel C. Sykes

Rachel Chaney Sykes, 83, of 977 Chaney Road, Asheboro, died Tuesday, Sept. 29, 1998, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Pleasant Cross United Church of Christ, where she was a member, with the Rev. Jeff Maness officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Surry County and retired from Acme-McCrary Hosiery Corporation.

Surviving are husband, Hal E. Sykes of the home; sons, Clayton E. Sykes of Springfield, Tenn., Jerry W. Sykes of Asheboro; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.

Alfred W. Brooks

STALEY - Alfred W. Brooks of Route 1, died Sunday, Sept. 27, 1998, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Evans Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church, Siler City. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Surviving are daughter, Karla Brooks of Liberty; sons, Gregory Brooks of Greensboro, Anthony Brooks of Iceland; mother, Allean Emerson of Staley; brothers, the Rev. Freeman Brooks of Pittsboro, James A. Brooks of Staley, Howard J. Brooks of Asheboro, Gaither Ray Emerson of Liberty; sisters, Clementina B. Farrar of Staley, Geneva B. Dark, Pauline Brooks, both of Manhattan, N.Y., Geraldine B. Gray of Siler City, Vera B. Andrews of Ramseur, Janice G. Lineberry of Liberty; stepfather, Gaither Emerson of Liberty.

The family will be at the church 2-3 p.m. Thursday.

Maude R. Upchurch

HIGHFALLS - Maude Ritter Upchurch, 96, of St. Joseph of the Pines Health Center, Southern Pines, formerly of Highfalls, died Wednesday, Sept. 30, 1998, at the Center.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Highfalls United Methodist Church, where she was a member. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Moore County, the widow of Newland Upchurch, a homemaker and a retired employee of Currie Mills.

Surviving are daughters, Libby U. Sawyer, Edna U. Purvis, both of Highfalls; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Kennedy Funeral Home, Robbins, 7-9 p.m. Thursday, other times at the home of Libby Sawyer, 250 N. Moore Road.

Lucy N. McNeill

SANFORD - Lucy Mae Nall McNeill, 74, of 151 Elkin Lane, died Monday, Sept. 28, 1998, at her daughter's home in Bear Creek.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Red Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Carbonton, with the Rev. Giles Saunders officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Chatham County, the widow of Joseph McNeill and was a homemaker.

Surviving are daughters, Priscilla Gordon of Bear Creek, Sylvia Jean McNeill of Goldston; sons, Darrell McNeill of Sanford, Larry McNeill of Carthage; sisters, Gertrude Mitchell of Graham, Ida Hilliard of Southern Pines; brothers, Frank Nall, John Nall, both of Goldston; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Fry-Prickett Funeral Home, Carthage, 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, other times at the home of Jimmy Gordon, 1755 Bill Lambert Road, Bear Creek.

Marlene M. McDonald
Marlene Morse McDonald, 61, of 1930 Old Humble Mill Road, Asheboro, died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998, at her home.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Cotten Funeral Home, New Bern, with Father Daniel Oschwald officiating. Burial will be in Greenleaf Memorial Park.

She was a native of Elmira, N.Y., and a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

Surviving are sons, Jeff McDaniel of Lake City, Fla., Mike McDaniel of Leesburg, Ga.; daughters, Angela Kelly of Clewiston, Fla., Michele Goode of Lake City, Fla., Bobbi Jo Tyrell of Asheboro; brother, Ronald Morse of New Bern; sisters, Roberta Brown of Elmira, N.Y., Lillian Miller of Florida; six grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday.

Robert N. White

Robert Nathaniel White, 69, of 4264 Woodfern Road, Asheboro, died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998, at Asheboro Health & Rehabilitation.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Piney Ridge United Methodist Church, Seagrove, with the Rev. Frederick E. Barnes officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Surviving are fiancee, Barbara Carter of Greensboro; mother, Lilly White of Seagrove; sons, Robert Nathaniel White of Sacramento, Calif., Michael White of Seagrove; sister, Josephine W. Spinks of Seagrove; brother, Noah White of Nyack, N.Y.; two grandchildren.

The family will be at the church 10 a.m. Friday.

Martha E. Turner

RANDLEMAN - Martha Evans Turner, 80, formerly of Asheboro, died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998, at Asheboro Health & Rehabilitation.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

She was a native of Catawba County and the widow of Clyde Turner.

Surviving are son, Henry A. Stewart of Denver, Colo.; sister, Vergie Blankenship of Lexington; three grandchildren.

LIBERTY - Annie Vickrey Black, 68, of 10602 Silk Hope Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998, at N.C. Baptist Hospital, Winston-Salem.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Smithwood United Church of Christ Cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County and retired from Gregson Manufacturing in Liberty.

Surviving are husband, James R. Black of the home; sons, Pete Black of Liberty, David Black of Greensboro; sister, Edith Welborn of Greensboro; four grandchildren.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty, 7-9 p.m. Thursday.

Juanita W. Bridges

SILER CITY - Juanita Webster Bridges, 89, of 2437 Jesse Bridges Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 23,1998, at Chatham Hospital.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Paul Edwards officiating.

She was the widow of Jesse B. Bridges and a member of Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church.

Surviving are daughter, Sylvia B. Coltrane of Greenville, S.C.; son, W. Donald Bridges of East Bernstadt, Ky.; half sisters, Estelle Daurity of Surfside Beach, S.C., Lozelle Campbell of Pinehurst; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter.

The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, other times at the home.

SILER CITY - Mary Elizabeth Womble Beal, 84, of 900 W. Dolphin St., died Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1998, at Sunrise Care Facilities at Siler City.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Brookdale Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Walter Jones officiating. Burial will be in Sandy Branch Baptist Church Cemetery.

She was the widow of Thomas Bailey Beal.

Surviving are daughter, Faye W. Frazier of Ramseur; sons, Clyde Beal of Ramseur, Louis Beal of Beebe, Ark., Jack Beal, Earnest Beal, both of Siler City, Cecil Beal of Fayetteville, Tommy Beal of Goldston; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-9 p.m. Thursday, other times at the home of Earnest Beal, 504 Pine Glades Ave., Siler City.

Daniel M. Dennis

TROY - Daniel McLean Dennis, 44, of 4313 D Colwick Road, Charlotte, died Monday, Sept. 28, 1998, at Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church of Troy, where he was a member, with the Rev. Raleigh Castelloe officiating. Burial will be in Liberty Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

He was a native of Montgomery County, an Eagle Scout and a millwright.

Surviving are father, David McLean Dennis of Troy; mother, Merlene Mullinix Dennis of Troy; brothers, David Dennis of Jackson, Tenn., Charles Dennis of Troy, John Dennis of Atlanta, Ga.

Nina Needham Miller, 89, formerly of 347 Peachtree St., Asheboro, died Thursday, Oct. 1, 1998, at Asheboro Health & Rehabilitation.

A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Oaklawn Cemetery.

She was a native of Seagrove and retired from Mid-State Paper Box Co.

Surviving is niece, Kimberly Dawn Jarrell of Asheboro, whom she raised.

Cordia J. Stevens

Cordia Frances Jarrell Stevens, 82, of Asheboro Health & Rehabilitation, died Thursday, Oct. 1, 1998, at Randolph Hospital.

Leo E. Whitley

Leo Edward Whitley, 84, of Asheboro, died Thursday, Oct. 1, 1998, at Clapp's Convalescent Nursing Home, Asheboro.

He was a native of Richmond County, a retired employee of P & P Chair Co. and a member of West Bend United Methodist Church.
