DENTON - J. Grant Varner, 66, of 573 Bringle Ferry Road, died Saturday, Dec. 19, 1998, at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Clear Springs United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. J. Marion Fulk and the Rev. Mike Motley officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Davidson County, a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, a retired rural mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service, Denton office, and a member of National Rural Letter Carriers Association. He was a member of Healing Springs Fire Department board of directors, Denton Masonic Lodge #404 AF & AM, Denton Chapter Order of the Eastern Star #216, Woodmen of the World Lodge #976, Life Member of Denton Amvet Post #240 and on the board of Clear Springs United Methodist Church.

Surviving are wife, Nell Rogers Varner of the home; sons, Richard "Ricky" Varner of Denton, Jimmy Varner of Salisbury; daughters, Angie Szares, Sharon Ayers, both of Denton; brother, Frank Varner of Denton; sisters, Margaret Clayton, Rachel Huneycutt, both of Albemarle, Norene "Beanie" Whitley of New London; three grandchildren; one stepgrandchild; one stepgreat-grandchild.

The family will be at Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday, other times at the home.

TROY - Paul Leonard Shaw Sr., 72, of 752 Dennis St., died Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998, at his home.

Kenneth De'Mar Clegg, 36, of 218 Cooper St., Asheboro, died Saturday, Dec. 19, 1998, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Congregational United Church of Christ. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Surviving are wife, Bonnie Baldwin Clegg; parents, Donald Mitchell Clegg and Beverly Chrisco Clegg of Biscoe; daughter, Caress Channel Clegg of Troy; son, Bryon Nicholas Clegg; sisters, Beverly "Mickey" C. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Ferree's Chapel.

He was employed with Prestige Fabricators Inc.

Surviving are wife, Angela Snipes; mother, Ethel Mae Patterson Snipes of Asheboro; father, John Willfred Snipes of Burlington; daughters, Michele Mills, Angelica Snipes; sons, Dometric Headen, Trellis Mills, Tony McRae, Quanta McRae, Tony Snipes Jr.; sisters, Angela McNeill of Asheboro, Wendy Ann Snipes of Bridgeport, Conn., Theresa Holt of Greensboro; brothers, Billy Snipes of Greensboro, Benny Snipes of Liberty.

The family will be at Gailes Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home.

RAMSEUR - Jesse Lewis Ritter, 75, of 5390 Riverside Road, died Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Antioch Christian Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Gerald Ward and the Rev. Hayes Ritter officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, a retired farmer and a deacon at his church.

Surviving are wife, Ruby Hicks Ritter of the home; sons, Lewis A. Ritter, Elvin Ritter, both of Ramseur; brothers, Robert Ritter of Ramseur, Lexie Ritter, Henry Ritter, Willie Ritter, all of Seagrove; sister, Lucy Needham of Seagrove; four grandchildren.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home of Elvin Ritter, 5468 Riverside Road, Ramseur.

Dwight Reece
RAMSEUR - George Dwight Reece, 77, of 1197 Brooklyn Ave. Ext., died Monday, Dec. 21, 1998, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Ramseur Wesleyan Church, with Dr. Roland Cavanaugh and the Rev. Ronald Terry officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Ridge Christian Church Cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, retired from Hancock Ham, a World War II U.S. Air Force veteran and attended Ramseur Wesleyan Church.

Surviving are wife, Maisie Richardson Reece of the home; brother, Seth Reece of Jacksonville, Fla.; sister, Bernice "Bessie" Cox of Asheboro.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, other times at the home.

Clara O. Morton
LIBERTY - Clara Overman Morton, 79, of 6848 N.C. 49 North, died Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998, at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Liberty Grove United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Liberty, retired from Stouts Chair Co. and was a member of White Cross Baptist Church.

Surviving are daughters, Carlene King of High Point, Janie Morton of Siler City; sons, Henry Charles Morton of Liberty, Dalton Morton of Orlando, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.

Willis S. Freeman
STAR - Willis L. Freeman, 79, of 308 Edward Road, died Monday, Dec. 21, 1998, at his home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at New Hope Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Gene Davis, the Rev. Clyde Allen and the Rev. Hearth Kennedy officiating. Burial will be in Brown's Chapel Christian Church Cemetery.

He was a native of Montgomery County Alabama and a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving are wife, Evelyn Sheffield Freeman; daughters, Gelenda Deaton, Phyllis Dunn, both of Star, Christine Freeman of the home, Louise Gordon of Thomasville; sisters, Lois Blake of Seagrove, Lera Flowers, Mary Presnell, both of Asheboro, Coletta Skeen of Denton; brother, Cecil Freeman of Star; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Phillips Funeral Home, Star, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home.

Paul L. Shaw Sr.
TROY - Paul Leonard Shaw Sr., 72, of 752 Dennis St., died Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998, at his home.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Southside Cemetery, with the Rev. Lee Church and the Rev. A.T. Robertson Jr. officiating.

He was a native of Randolph County, a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, on the Troy Town Council, 1963-71, a Boy Scout leader who received the Silver Beaver Award, a World War II U.S. Army veteran and formerly employed with Carter Furniture in research and development.

Surviving are sons, Paul Shaw Jr., Wayne Shaw, both of Troy; brothers, John Shaw of Troy, Henry Shaw of Zebulon; sister, Ethel Bateman of Rockingham; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

The family will be at Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, Troy, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home.

Robert D. Hill
CHESAPEAKE, Va. - CPO Robert Dorset Hill Sr., USN (Ret.), 69, of 400 Guynn Ave., died Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998, at a local hospital.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Snellings Funeral Home, Chesapeake, Va., with the Rev. Vance Smith and the Rev. Robert D. Hill Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, with military rites.

He was a native of Philadelphia, Pa., a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Norfolk, a U.S. Navy veteran of Korea and Vietnam and formerly employed at Norfolk Naval Shipyard.

Surviving are wife, Rachel "Betty" Hill of Chesapeake, Va.; daughter, Sharon H. Williams of Asheboro; son, the Rev. Robert D. Hill Jr. of Louisville, Texas; sisters, Myrtle Burns of Bensalem, Pa., Ruth Kaiser of West Chester, Pa., Helen Riccardi of Harleysville, Pa.; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home, one hour prior to the service.

Dr. Robert E. Mabe
SIGNAL MOUNTAIN, Tenn. - Dr. Robert E. Mabe, 77, formerly of Asheboro, died Saturday, Dec. 12, 1998, at his home.

A memorial service was Dec. 15 at Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church, where he was a member, with Dr. William Dudley officiating. A private burial was held.

He was a native of Stoneville, a World War II veteran of the Army Air Corps and recipient of the Purple Heart and Distinguished Flying Cross. He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina and Harvard University, served his residence at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and was a member of the American College of Chest Physicians. He was a deacon and elder at his church and a member of Gideons International and the Downtown Kiwanis Club.

Surviving are wife, Ida Kummer Mabe; daughters, Cynthia M. Solomon of Columbia, Md., Christine M. Scott, Catherine M. Pyron, both of Signal Mountain, Tenn.; sister, Ernestine Stone of Charlotte; five grandchildren.

Chattanooga Funeral Home, Chattanooga, Tenn., was in charge of the arrangements.

Memorials may be made to Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church or to the Gideons.

Beulah D. La-Mar
Beulah Marie DeVors La-Mar, 65, of 304 Wesley Court, Asheboro, died Tuesday, Dec. 22, 1998, at High Point Regional Hospital.

CEDAR FALLS - Audrey Kay Hill Lineberry, 41, of 3948 Old Cedar Falls Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 22, 1998, at Wesley Long Hospital, Greensboro.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, with the Rev. Russell Chrisco officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Falls Brickyard Cemetery.

She was a native of Scotland County and a homemaker.

Surviving are husband, Robert Lee Lineberry; parents, William and Polly Hill of Cedar Falls; sons, Robert Phillip Lineberry, Kevin Eugene Lineberry, both of the home; stepson, Bruce Lee Lineberry of Seagrove; stepdaughter, Rosemary Williams of Randleman; brothers, William C. Hill, Donald E. Hill, both of Asheboro; sisters, Doris L. Kidd of Ramseur, April D. Callicutt, Kelly G. Hill, both of Cedar Falls, Georgia A. Hill of Siler City; grandmother, Mae McCormick of West End; five stepgrandchildren; one stepgreat-granddaughter.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.

Pauline M. Monk
CARTHAGE - Pauline Muse Monk, 88, of Weatherford, Texas, died Monday, Dec. 7, 1998, in a Fort Worth, Texas hospital.

A memorial service was held Dec. 12 in Texas. A burial service will be at a later date in Cross Hill Cemetery, Carthage.

She was a native of Carthage and a retired nurse with the state of California after 30 years.

Surviving are daughters, Betty M. Koenig of Weatherford, Texas, Collette M. Green of Swampscott, Mass.; sister, Louise Muse Blue of Carthage; four grandsons.

Fry-Prickett Funeral Home, Carthage, is in charge of local arrangements.

Terry G. Bowman
Terry Ann Gallimore Bowman, 51, of 930 Sherwood Ave., Asheboro, died Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1998, at High Point Regional Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Arnold Comer officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

She was a native of Randolph County and retired from Cycle Center of Asheboro.

Surviving are husband, Larry D. Bowman of the home; daughter, Dee A. Bowman of the home; father, Elroy Gallimore of the home.

LAURINBURG - John L. Matheson, 90, of 1008 Scotia Village, died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 1998, at Scotia Village Extended Care Facility, Laurinburg.

A graveside service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Sharon Cemetery, Mt. Gilead, with the Rev. Wil Jackson officiating.

He was a native of Mt. Gilead, retired director of Marketing and Agriculture for the state of New York and a member of First United Methodist Church, Laurinburg.

Surviving is wife, Lula Cameron Matheson of the home.

RANDLEMAN - Melvin Harrison Hoskins, 59, of 4272 Brown Loop Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1998, at Sunrise Rest and Rehabilitation.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Harshaw Grove Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was retired from Dixie Restaurant after 38 years as a cook.

Surviving are wife, Nancy Ferree Hoskins; daughters, Carol Greene of Asheboro, Kim Richmond of Greensboro; sons, John Reives of Randleman, Anthony Reives of Marietta, Ga., Fred Reives of Greensboro; sisters, Lucy Clyde Parson, Griszella Parson; brothers, Oliver Hoskins, William Hoskins, both of Randleman, Gene Hoskins of Asheboro; two grandchildren.

The family will be at the church 10 a.m. Saturday, other times at the home.

THOMASVILLE- Wilma Vaden Conrad Ward, 83, of the Piedmont Center, formerly of West Holly Hill Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1998, at Community General Hospital, Thomasville.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Grace Lutheran Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Craig Saltzer officiating. Burial will be in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery.

She was a native of Davidson County, widow of Paul C. Ward, a homemaker, former Sunday School teacher and member of Lutheran Church Women.

Surviving are sisters, Alistene Tolen of Asheboro, Love Gilliam of Santa Fe, N.M.

The family will be at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home, Thomasville, 7-9 p.m. Sunday, other times at the home of Sam and Sharon Sink, 305 Alison Lane, Archdale.

BISCOE - Willie Spikes Batten, 90, of 433 Cedar Creek Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1998, at her home.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Mt. Gilead.

She was a native of Dothan, Ala., the widow of Carl W. Batten and a homemaker.

Surviving are daughters, Marion Williamson of Biscoe, Eleanor Bruster of Buckeye, Ariz.; sons, Winford Batten of Warsaw, Carl Roger Batten of Springfield, Tenn., C. Eugene Batten of Biscoe, Willie L. "Doc" Batten of Leland; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Phillips Funeral Home, Star, 7-9 p.m. Sunday.
