Alan Stanley Alvarenga, 14, of 226 Coleridge Road, Asheboro, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Mision Bautista Hispana with the Rev. Julio Olivares officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.

He was a native of Los Angeles, Calif., and attended Asheboro High School.

Surviving are father, Martin Ramirez of the home; mother, Ines Elizabeth Montenegro of the home; sister, Xiomara Alvarenga of the home; brothers, Martin Ramirez Jr. and Moises Ramirez, both of the home; grandmother, Elsa Regina Guillen of the home.

The family will at Pugh Funeral Home Asheboro 2-5 p.m. Sunday and at the church 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday.

Beulah M. La-Mar
Beulah Marie DeVors La-Mar, 65, of 304 Wesley Court, Asheboro, died Tuesday, Dec. 22, 1998, at High Point Regional Hospital.

No service will be held.

She was a native of Danville, Ill., a former employee of Champagne Dye and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Surviving are husband, Richard Paul La-Mar; sons, Robert Eynon La-Mar and Richard Louis La-Mar, both of Asheboro, and James DuPaul La-Mar of Claytonville, Ill.; daughters, Marie T. Caviness of Ramseur and Ester M. Jones of Troy; sisters, Leola Grubstad of Lake Wells, Fla., and Blanche Meyer of LaVerne, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home Asheboro 2-4 p.m. Sunday.

Jessie M. Comer
BENNETT - Jessie Mae McNeill Comer, 95, died Saturday, Dec. 26, 1998, at SunRise Care and Rehabilitation Center in Siler City.

Funeral service will be 2:30 p.m. Monday at Bennett Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Tim Strider, Rev. J.R. Bouldin and Rev. Edsel Caviness officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Moore County, a homemaker, and the widow of Frank McNeill and Curtis Comer.

Surviving are daughters, Mozelle Routh and Ruth Oldham, both of Bennett, and Betty Caviness of Burlington; son, James McNeill of Ramseur; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Joyce-Brady Funeral Home 6-8:30 p.m. Sunday and other times at the residence of Mrs. Harvey Oldham in Bennett.

Alicia S. Deitering
RANDLEMAN - Alicia Sue Deitering, infant daughter of David and Brenda Deitering of 3906 Camp Nawaka Road, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998, at N.C. Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem.

Graveside service will be 3 p.m. Monday at Oaklawn Cemetery.

Surviving in addition to the parents are sister, Kayla Sue Deitering of the home; grandfather, Charles Richard Thitoff of Delphos, Ohio.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home 2-3 p.m. Monday.

Vara A. Goodman
MOUNT PLEASANT - Vara Albright Goodman, 91, of 7138 N.C. 73 East, died Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1998, at Concord Nursing Center in Concord.

Funeral service was 3 p.m. Saturday at Gordon Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Chet Byerly officiating. Burial was in St. James United Church of Christ Cemetery.

She was a native of Montgomery County, a member of St. James United Church of Christ and the widow of Opal H. Goodman.

Surviving are brother, Fred Albright of Randleman; sister, Dewey Mae Hartsell of Mount Pleasant.

George W. Kelly
MT. GILEAD - George Washington Kelly, 78, of 205 E. 2nd St., died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998, at his residence.

Funeral service will be 11 p.m. Monday at Holly Mount Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Mitchell Walker and Rev. Bill High officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeland Memorial Park in Monroe.

He was a native of Montgomery County, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a retired grocery clerk.

Surviving are son, Jerry Kelly of Albemarle; sisters, Odessa Jett of Candor and Lois Thompson and Dorothy Blake, both of Mt. Gilead; stepsons, Amos J. Hough Jr. of Marietta, Ga., and Walter Hough of St. Petersburg, Fla.; stepdaughters, Mrs. George Crump and Mrs. Ed. Scarboro, both of Bradenton, Fla., and Mrs. Larry Robinson of Concord; seven grandchildren.

The family will be at McKeithan Funeral Home in Mt. Gilead 3-5 p.m. Sunday.

Janie Kennedy
EAGLE SPRINGS - Janie Catherine Kennedy, 92, formerly of Kennedy Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1998, at Pine Lake Health and Rehabilitation Center of Carthage.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Bensalem Presbyterian Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Tom Williams and Rev. Dawes Graybill officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Moore County, a member of the Ladies Circle at her church and a retired clerk from Belk Department Stores.

Surviving is a brother, Mack Kennedy of Eagle Springs.

Memorials may be made to Bensalem Presbyterian Church, Bensalem Church Road, Eagle Springs, N.C. 27242.

CLIMAX - Fannie Bentley Lamb, 87, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998, at Wesley Long Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Hanes-Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel. Burial will follow at Guilford Memorial Park.

She was the widow of Charles Edward Lamb.

Surviving are daughters, Rebecca Johnson of Liberty and Sandra Roberts of Climax; son, Kenneth H. Lamb of Seagrove; 18 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 6-8 p.m. Sunday.

Annie G. Osborne
PLEASANT GARDEN - Annie Ellen Gray Osborne, 77, of 542 N.C. 62 E., died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998, at her residence.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. at Centre Friends Meeting, where she was a member, with the Rev. Don Osborne, Rev. Cafer Marley and Rev. Victor Murchison officiating. Burial will follow in the Meeting House Cemetery.

She was a native of Alamance County, a former employee of Laughlin Hosiery in Randleman and a member of the Lutie Woody Circle of the Women's Society at her church.

Surviving are husband, David C. Osborne of the home; daughters, Tula O. Hiatt of Pleasant Garden and Denise Francisco of Denton; son, Ronald G. Osborne of Pleasant Garden; brothers, Tom Gray of Trinity and Walter H. Gray of Archdale; sister, Edith Osborne of Pleasant Garden; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

Ila S. Tabor
GREENSBORO - Ila S. Tabor, 95, of 1704 Whiteley Place, Greensboro, died Friday, Dec. 25, 1998, at Moses H. Cone Hospital.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Tabernacle United Methodist Church in Greensboro, where she was a member. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Wadesboro, a graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne College, a teacher, and a member of the United Methodist Women and the Friendship Circle at her church. She was the widow of the Rev. John B. Tabor Jr.

Surviving are daughters, Nancy T. Aguilera of Greensboro and Rebecca T. Welch of Kernersville; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Organ Fund, Tabernacle United Methodist Church, 5601 Liberty Road, Greensboro, N.C., 27406.

SALISBURY - Peggy Gurkin Vick, 64, of 423 Eastwood Drive, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Pugh Funeral Home Chapel in Asheboro with the Rev. Donald Haynes officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

She was a native of Montgomery County, a member of First Baptist Church of Asheboro, a graduate of Barton College with a degree in elementary education and a teacher for 30 years.

Surviving are daughter, Teresa Vick Johnson of Salisbury; mother, Mattie Britt Moorefield of Asheboro; sisters, Linda Phillips of Rocky Mount, Hilda Westbrook of Raleigh and Susan Spivey of Asheboro; brother, Ron Spivey of Arlington, Texas; three grandchildren.

Irene S. Hall
Irene Sands Hall, 90, of 415 Westbury Road, Asheboro, died Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998, at Clapp's Convalescent Nursing Home, Asheboro.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with Elder Calvin Harwood officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

She was a native of Stokes County, the widow of Otis O. Hall, of the Primitive Baptist faith and a homemaker.

Surviving are daughters, Jean Carol Trogdon, Shirley Anne Pickett, both of Asheboro; sons, Ralph Sands Hall, Cecil Otis Hall, Barry Warren Hall, all of Asheboro; sister, Pearl Sands Handy of Martinsville, Va.; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-8:30 p.m. Monday, other times at the home.

Boyd A. Burgess
FRANKLINVILLE - Boyd Anderson Burgess, 78, of 1589 Academy St. Ext., died Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur.

Wayne H. Morris
DENTON - Wayne Hill Morris, 80, of 397 N. Jones St., died Saturday, Dec. 26, 1998, at his home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Central United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Joe Collins officiating. Burial will be in Denton Town Cemetery.

He was a native of Davidson County, a World War II U.S. Army veteran and retired co-owner and operator of Morris Super Market in Denton.

Surviving are wife, Frances Hogan Morris of the home; daughter, Gilda Morris of Denton; son, Larry Morris of Savannah, Ga.; brother, Don B. Morris of Denton; sisters, Edna Davis of Denton, Waydene Badgett, Doris Bullock, both of Greensboro; three grandchildren.

The family will be at Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday, other times at the home.

Mark K. Shaver
ELKTON, Va. - Mark Keith Shaver, 29, of Elkton, Va., died Friday, Dec. 25, 1998, in Wythville, Va.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Taylor Memorial Baptist Church, Jackson Springs, with the Rev. Richard Hodges officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Mecklenburg County and a supervisor in construction.

Surviving are mother and stepfather, Martha Bostic and Larry Howle of Charlotte; father and stepmother, Donald Keith and Trina Shaver of Eagle Springs; grandmother, Glennie Shaver of West End.

There will be no visitation.

Phillips Funeral Home, Star, is in charge of the arrangements.

Calvin Eugene "Gene" Lucas, 89, of 317 Kennelwood Drive, Asheboro, died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, at his home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. David Bosley officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

He was a native of Montgomery County and retired after 40 years with Randolph Packing.

Surviving are wife, Mavolene Underwood Lucas of Asheboro; daughter, Wanda L. Minton of Asheboro; sons, Ronnie Lucas of Franklinville, Jimmy Lucas of Randleman; sisters, Bessie L. Callicutt of Troy, Caroline L. Keeling of Asheboro; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.

FRANKLINVILLE - Boyd Anderson Burgess, 78, of 1589 Academy St. Ext., died Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Patterson Grove Christian Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Dan Neely officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, retired from Randolph Mills and was a U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving are wife, Mildred Freeman Burgess of the home; son, Alan Mitchell Burgess of Franklinville; brother, Earl "Buck" Burgess of Asheboro; sisters, Maxine Ward, Doris Burgess, both of Ramseur, Geraldine York of Franklinville, Norma Lee Burke of Bear Creek; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home of the son, 2958 N.C. 22 North, Franklinville.

Robert N. Hanratty
HUNTINGTON, Md. - Robert Norman Hanratty, 50, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998.

Funeral service was 10 a.m. Tuesday at Rausch Funeral Home, Owings, Md. Burial was in Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Cheltenham, Md.

He was a native of Washington, D.C., a Vietnam War U.S. Army veteran, employed with the U.S. Postal Service and restored classic cars.

Surviving are wife, Deborah Hanratty; sons, Robert B. Hanratty, Justin S. Hanratty; stepdaughter, Heather Miller; mother and stepfather, June Boarman Hinkson and George R. Hinkson of Ramseur; sisters, Helen Asmussen of Monroe, Claire Maria Bodenstein, Anna Christine Green, Lena Delores Drobenick, all of Charlotte.

Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association, North Carolina Chapter.

Carson R. Rose
STAR - Carson R. Rose, 92, of 269 Dover St., died Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998, at his home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Dover Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Lonnie Gibson and the Rev. Mike Holyfield officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Montgomery County, a farmer and a past deacon at his church.

Surviving are wife, Dora Hurley Rose of Star; daughter, Frances Kellam of Candor; sister, Lalah Allen of Star; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Phillips Funeral Home, Star, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.

CARTHAGE - Jordan Speer, infant daughter of Robert J. Speer and Mary "Susie" Agnew, died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Cross Hill Cemetery, with Pastor Steve Jordan officiating.

Surviving in addition to the parents are half brother, Robbie Speer of the home; half sister, Crystal Speer of the home; grandmothers, Debra Sue Scott of Hampton, Va., Ruth Speer of West End.

Decie M. Fox, 79, of 1132 Northside Terrace, Asheboro, died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Adrian Pugh officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

She was a native of Chatham County, retired from Bossong Hosiery and a member of Fayetteville Street Baptist Church.

Surviving are husband, Robert Fox; daughter, Jane F. Rich of Asheboro; son, Gene Fox of Asheboro; brother, Harvey Moore of Asheboro; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, other times at the home of the daughter, 2004 Harvell St., Asheboro.
