ASHEBORO - James "Jim" Lee Brooks, 60, of 6513 King Mountain Road, Asheboro, died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003, at his home.

Funeral service is 1 p.m. Tuesday at Harvest Field Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Faron Overton officiating.

He was a native of Scranton, Pa., and a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.

Surviving are wife, Doris "Dot" Brooks of the home; daughter, Christine Bledsoe of York, S.C.; son, James L. Brooks Jr. of Morgantown, W.Va.; sisters, Caroline Propst of Baltimore, Md., and Iva O'Donnell of Creso, Pa.; brother, Charles G. Brooks of Asheboro; six grandchildren.

The family will be at the home.

Gertie H. Chappell
MT. GILEAD - Gertie Harrison Chappell, 94, of 149 County Line Road, died Sunday, Sept. 14, 2003, at Autumn Care of Biscoe.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Exway Baptist Church, Mt. Gilead, where she was a member, with the Rev. David Peitz and the Rev. Mark Garner officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a Davidson County native and a homemaker. She was the widow of Jessie Chappell.

Surviving are sons, Lee Chappell and Clyde Chappell, both of Mt. Gilead; daughters, Dorothy Lamonds of Biscoe and Lola Sneed of Mt. Gilead; sisters, Ann Kearns of Mt. Gilead and Alma Harrison of Troy; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Edwards Funeral Home, Mt. Gilead, 7-9 p.m. Monday.

Memorials may be made to Exway Baptist Church, County Line Road, Mt. Gilead, N.C. 27306.

Robert P. Bunker
ASHEBORO - Robert Paul Bunker, 85, of 636 Lexington Road, Asheboro, died Monday, Sept. 15, 2003, in Asheboro.

A private memorial service will be held.

He was a graduate of Dartmouth College and the NYU School of Engineering. He retired as vice president of the Klopman Division of Burlington Industries. He was a member of the Asheboro Rotary Club, an organizer and past president of the local chapter of SCORE, a treasurer on the board of directors for Randolph Hospital, an organizer of the local United Way and an elder at First Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are wife, Betty Whitcomb Bunker of the home; daughters, Robin Timmins and Anne Deutsch, both of Greensboro, Deborah Bunker of Asheboro; son, Dumont Bunker of Asheboro; five grandchildren.

Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, is in charge of arrangements.

Van Harris
ASHEBORO - Graham Vance Harris, 58, of 518 Mountain Brook Road, Asheboro, died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003, at Wesley Long Hospital, Greensboro.

Memorial service was held Sunday at the family home.

He attended East Carolina University, was formerly employed as a manager with Eckerd Drug on Dixie Drive and a volunteer for Duke Children's Miracle Network.

Surviving are wife, Helen Harris; sons, Chris Harris and Brad Moorefield; two grandchildren.

Donald L. Lamar
ASHEBORO - Donald Leon "Donnie" Lamar, 45, of 755 Branchwater Road, Asheboro, died Sunday, Sept. 14, 2003, at his home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, with Pastor C.D. Lamar and the Rev. Ray Lambe officiating. Burial will be in Back Creek Friends Meeting Cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County and a member of Shining Light Ministries.

Surviving are sons, Aaron Lamar and Adam Lamar, both of Asheboro; mother, Betty McMillan of the home; stepmother, Sue Lamar of Asheboro; brother, Michael Lamar of Asheboro; half sister, Rebecca Lamar of Asheboro; stepsisters, Tammy Leach and Wanda Hayworth, both of Asheboro; stepbrother, Duane McMillan of Asheboro.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home.

Virginia M. Penfield
ASHEBORO - Virginia Marie Penfield, 83, of 625 Corwith St., Asheboro, died Sunday, Sept. 14, 2003, at her home.

Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Wed-nesday at Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, where she was a member, with Dr. Everett Thomas, the Rev. Janice Chalaron and the Rev. Ron Taylor officiating.

She was a native of Boston, Mass., a retired buyer with Thalheimer's Department Store after 25 years and a charter member of St. Francis Episcopal Church in Greensboro, where she was a former choir director. She was a former choir director, former president of the ECW and a member of St. Margaret's Guild at Good Shepherd, a volunteer at Randolph Hospital where she was the founder of the gift shop, a founding member of Hospice of Randolph and a professional caterer.

Surviving are husband, Addison Penfield; daughters, Nancy P. Wease of Huntersville, Sandra P. Suggs of Rocky Mount; sons, Addison Penfield Jr. of Greenwood, S.C., Cameron W. Penfield of Charlotte; stepbrother, Walter Cameron of Wallingford, Conn.; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

The family will be at the church immediately following the memorial service.

CLIMAX - Helen Harris Spainhour, 66, died Sunday, Sept. 14, 2003, at Wesley Long Community Hospital, Greensboro.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bethlehem United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Moore County, a founding partner of S & S Appliance Repair Company and Three Sisters & A Brother Antiques & Collectibles, a retired employee of Nations Bank and she attended Bethlehem United Methodist Church.

Surviving are husband, Elton Spainhour of the home; sons, John G. Spainhour of Asheville, Tim H. Spainhour of Greensboro; sisters, Jean Millikan of Eastwood, Phyllis Baines of Pinehurst; brother, Bill Harris of West End; two grandchildren.

The family will be at Forbis & Dick Funeral Home, Pleasant Garden, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.

Charlie F. Simmons
TROY - Charlie Franklin Simmons, 85, of 332 Dennis Road, died Sunday, Sept. 14, 2003, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Prospect Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Stanly County and a retired salesman for Raleigh Products.

Surviving are wife, Mellon Hall Simmons of the home; daughters, Linda S. Russell of Troy, Cathy S. Cooke of Goldsboro; son, Charlie A. Simmons of Troy; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, Troy, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home.

Noah L. Herbert
ASHEBORO - Noah Lee Herbert, infant son of Joseph Albert Herbert and Savannah Ann Lloyd, of 2077 Wright Road, Lexington, died Monday, Sept. 15, 2003, at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Randolph Memorial Park, with the Rev. Bernie Hess officiating.

Surviving, in addition to parents, are grandparents, Pamela Lloyd of Denton, Ricky and Karen Lloyd of Port Orange, Fla., and Rick and Sheila Browning of Lexington; great-grandparents, Bobby and Camilla Bentley of Denton, David and Darlene Francisco of Salem, Va., and Bud Browning of Denton.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.

Marie T. Holder
RANDLEMAN - Marie Tucker Holder, 77, of 120-A Randolph St., died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Berean Memorial Baptist Church, where she was a member, with Pastor Joe L. Farlow, the Rev. Wyatt Hoogkamp and the Rev. Rocky Patterson officiating. Burial will be in Country Holiness Cemetery.

She was a Randolph County native and retired from Sew Special.

Surviving are daughters, Brenda Arney of Archdale, Grovena Johnson of Sophia, Diane Trogdon of Seagrove, Kathy Highfill of Randleman and Julie Poole of Greenville, S.C.; sister, Louise Sechrest of McLeansville; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Randleman, 6-8 p.m. Wednesday.

Lauretta R. Thompson
FRANKLINVILLE - Lauretta Routh Thompson, 86, of 3663 Tom Brown Road, died Monday, Sept. 15, 2003, at her home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Bethany United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. R. Curran Welch officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a Randolph County native and retired from Pinehurst Textiles. She was a volunteer and later employed with Randolph Hospital where she served for 47 years. She was in the choir and in charge of the nursery at her church for 51 years. She was the widow of Carl J. Redmon and Charles B. Thompson.

Surviving are daughters, Mary R. Fulton of Franklinville and Routh Ellen Davis of Asheboro; son, Bruce C. Redmon of Denton; seven grandchildren; one stepgrandchild; nine great-grandchildren; one stepgreat-grandchild.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Randleman, 6-8:30 p.m. Wednesday; other times at the home.

Janell M. Newlin
SILER CITY - Janell Moody Newlin, 76, of 1015 Woody Store Road, died Monday, Sept. 15, 2003, at the home of her son.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, with the Rev. Derik Davis and Mike Arnold officiating. Burial will be in West Grove Friends Meeting, Snow Camp.

She was a Chatham County native and a bookkeeper. She was a member of West Grove Friends Meeting, where she was an Elder and treasurer, and a graduate of Silk Hope School and Campbell College. She was the widow of Alfred C. Newlin.

Surviving are sons, Barry Newlin of Snow Camp, Gerald Newlin of Siler City and William Newlin of Burlington; daughter, Cynthia Newlin of Montclair, N.J.; sister, Wilma M. Overbeek of Huntsville, Ala.; six grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Wednesday; other times at the family home.

Memorials may be made to the charity of donor's choice.

Ina B. Nall
ROBBINS - Ina Bailey Nall, 95, died Monday, Sept. 15, 2003, at 5396 N.C. 705, Robbins.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church, Robbins, with the Rev. Monty Brown officiating. Burial will be in Pine Rest Cemetery.

She was a Bladen County native, the widow of Daniel Rufus Nall and a retiree of Robbins Mills. She was a member of Big Oak Christian Church.

Surviving are sons, Wayne Nall of Star and D.R. Nall of Robbins; daughters, Marie N. Key and Louvene N. Maness, both of Robbins; brother, Wilbur Bailey of Thomasville; sisters, Thelma Spell of High Point and Eloise Dawkins of Candor; 10 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Kennedy Funeral Home, Robbins, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday; other times at the home of Louvene and Jim Maness.

John Z. Maynard Jr.
STAR - John Z. Maynard Jr., 74, of 224 Dover St., died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, at his home.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Phillips Funeral Home, Star, with the Rev. James W. Hamilton officiating. Burial will be in Star UMC Cemetery, Center Street, Star.

He was a Montgomery County native and a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Star UMC and served as a town commissioner for the Town of Star for 24 years. He was a knitting room supervisor for Russell Hosiery and a funeral director with Phillips Funeral Home for 18 years.

Surviving are wife, Betty Floyd Maynard, of the home; daughter, Vicki Sipple of Dexter, Mich.; sons, John Z. Maynard III of Ether and Mark Maynard of Star; sister, Peggy Shoe of Star; five grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to FirstHealth Hospice, 150 Applecross Road, Pinehurst, N.C. 28374.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Thursday.

Helen M. Nelson
TROY - Helen Moore Nelson, 84, of Baaseiah Rest Home, Candor, formerly of Johnson Road, Troy, died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, at FirstHealth Montgomery Memorial Hospital.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at First Wesleyan Church, Troy, where she was a member, with the Rev. Douglas W. Beadle officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

She was a Montgomery County native and retired from private duty nursing.

Surviving are son, Reginald "Bob" Nelson of Troy; daughter, Shirley N. Haywood of Wilmington; brother, Carl Edward "Buck" Moore of Troy; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the church 7-9 p.m. Wednesday; other times at the home of her son, 805 Troy-Candor Road, Troy.

TROY - Elvis Wade Russell, 76, of 516 Wallace Ave., Apt. 3A, died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Lovejoy United Methodist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Bill Williams officiating.

He was a Montgomery Church and a member of Lovejoy United Methodist Church. He was retired from Taylor Mobile Homes.

Surviving are sons, Barry Russell of Pawleys Island, S.C., Brian Russell of Zirconia, Brett Russell of Wake Forest and Kim Russell of Greensboro; daughter, Vickie R. Kivett of Greensboro; brother, Albert Russell of Troy; eight grandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, Troy, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, other times at 118 N. Bilhen St., Troy.

Preston W. Mabe
TROY - Preston William Mabe, 92, of 172 Sunset Drive, died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, at FirstHealth Montgomery Memorial Hospital.

Funeral service is 2 p.m. Thursday at Tabernacle Baptist Church, Troy, where he was the oldest active member, with Pastor Tony Hancox officiating. Burial will be in Southside Cemetery.

He was a Surry County native and retired from Troy Lumber Company.

Surviving are wife, Stella Chappell Mabe, of the home; sons, Arthur Mabe of Star and Roy Mabe of Albemarle; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, Troy, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday; other times at the home.

Rufus L. Pierce
ASHEBORO - Rufus Lee Pierce, 78, of 914 Powhatan Ave., Asheboro, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Macedonia United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Donald Jones and the Rev. Ronnie Pruitt officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military honors by the Randolph County Honor Guard.

He was a native of Randolph County, the widower of Jessie Mae Sanders Pierce and of the Methodist faith. He was a former employee of Tip Top Hosiery and B.B. Walker, a World War II U.S. Army veteran and a member of the Disabled American Veterans, American Legion Post 45 and AmVets Post 905.

Surviving are sons, Ronald Pierce of Roxboro, Brian Pierce of the home; sister, Louella Newsome of Asheboro; brothers, David Pierce and Luther Pierce, both of Denton; half sister, Marsha Ann Surratt of Denton; four grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7-9 p.m. Friday, other times at the home.

H. Junior Hancock
ROBBINS - Hurley Junior Hancock, 71, of 1923 Browns Mill Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, at Autumn Care of Biscoe.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Browns Chapel Christian Church, with the Rev. Fred Richardson and the Rev. Jimmy Shirlen officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Moore County and a retired employee of Luck's.

Surviving are sons, Garland Hancock, Richard Hancock and Glenn Hancock, all of Robbins, Roger Hancock of Seagrove; brothers, Thurmond Hancock of Seagrove, Wilton Hancock of Robbins; sisters, Vera Needham and Verlene Aderholt, both of Robbins; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Phillips Funeral Home, Star, 7-9 p.m. Thursday.
