Katherine I. Houtwed
Former Tribland area resident Katherine I. (Lewer) Jensen Houtwed, 93, of Exeter, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at the Community Care Center in Exeter.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Bethany Lutheran Church in Ruskin with the Rev. Bill Waterman officiating. Burial will be in Spring Creek Cemetery in Ruskin. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at Megrue-Price Funeral Home in Superior.
Mrs. Houtwed was born July 11, 1906, to Reginald Percy and Susan Rebecca (Brammer) Lewer in Dedham, Iowa. She moved with her family to Nebraska in 1918 and graduated in 1924 from Nickerson High School. A year later, she moved with her parents to Nora where she worked in the Nora Grocery and gave private piano lessons. On Feb. 25, 1931, she married Harold Jensen at her parents' home. They farmed near Oak, Lawrence, Edgar, Nora, Cadams and Superior. They retired from farming and then owned and operated K&H Food Center in Ruskin in 1961. On April 22, 1971, her husband died. She worked as a bookkeeper for Petersen Oil Co. in Ruskin before moving to Good Samaritan Village in Hastings where she worked as a waitress and cashier. On March 4, 1979, she married Jens Houtwed. He died Sept. 4, 1990. She later moved to Superior and lived there for three years before moving to Exeter.
She was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church and its women's group and was church choir director for several years. She was a former member and chairwoman of Cadams, Nuckolls County and Valley Home Extension Clubs and the Ruskin Woman's Club. She organized the Farmerettes and served as chairwoman of the Village Auxiliary in Hastings.
Survivors are two daughters, Loryne Moore of Exeter and Heral Jean Schultz of Superior; two stepdaughters, Arlene Hansen and Will Cleary; one brother, Reginald of Zephyr Hills, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and 18 stepgreat-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one stepson, Dewane Houtwed; three brothers; two sisters; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to the church.

Alma Koerwitz Morse
Deshler resident Alma Koerwitz Morse, 89, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, in Deshler.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Deshler with the Rev. Duane Fahr officiating. Burial will be in the Deshler City Cemetery. Visitation is two hours prior to services Wednesday at the church. Ahrendts Funeral Home of Deshler is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Morse was born March 26, 1910. She attended school through the eighth grade. She worked for the Deshler Broom Factory for 16 years. In the mid-1950s, she moved to Junction City, Kan. She worked in a turnpike restaurant near Topeka for seven years. She then managed a bar and grill in Junction City. She married Harold Morse. He preceded her death six years later.
Survivors are two sons, Donald Koerwitz of Junction City and Harlan Koerwitz of Bethlehem, Pa.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by one son, Gene; and four brothers.
Memorials have been established.

Verda Fringer Reynolds
Superior resident Verda (Jones) Fringer Reynolds, 94, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at Good Samaritan Center in Superior.
Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at Guide Rock United Methodist Church with the Rev. Harold Backus officiating. Burial will be in the Guide Rock Cemetery. Williams Funeral Home of Superior is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Reynolds was born Dec. 7, 1905, to Alva and Pinella (McMillan) Jones in Jewell County, Kan. She attended Northbranch Academy in Kansas and graduated from Burr Oak High School in Kansas in 1923. On Aug. 26, 1923, she married Glen Fringer. They lived in the Northbranch and Guide Rock areas. She operated a cafe in Guide Rock from 1944-52. She then returned to college to complete her degree. She taught in rural schools in the Guide Rock and Bladen areas for six years. On June 19, 1966, her husband died. She then went to work with the Nuckolls County Welfare Department in Nelson for 13 years until her retirement. In 1971 she married James Reynolds in Red Cloud. They lived in Chino Valley, Ariz., and Guide Rock. In 1985 her husband died. She moved to Superior in 1992.
She was a member of the Guide Rock United Methodist Church, the Royal Neighbors, Rebecca Lodge, American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and the Retired Teacher's Association.
Survivors are two daughters, Glenda Douthit of Visalia, Calif., and Sharon Rust of Superior; two sons, Ron of Grand Island and Virgil of Visalia; 14 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Gerald C. 'Jerry' Graham
Former Hastings resident Gerald C. "Jerry" Graham, 56, of Grand Island, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, at his home after a long illness.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Dale Phillips officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Mr. Graham was born Dec. 17, 1943, to Robert V. Graham and Pauline (Mackie) Graham Kindig in Hastings. He graduated from Hastings Senior High School and served in the U.S. Armed Forces. He worked as a truck driver for Delicious Foods in Grand Island and later retired.
Survivors are two sons, Rodney of Hastings and Randy of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; three sisters, Eleanor Casler of Estes Park, Colo., Joyce Fernandes of Hastings and Myra Knez of Riverside, Calif.; two brothers, Robert Graham of Royal Palm Beach, Fla., and James Kindig of Kenesaw; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Esther R. Karnes
Edgar resident Esther Rose (Batt) Karnes, 92, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, at Memorial Hospital in Aurora.
Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at the Christian Church in Clay Center with the Rev. John Green officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. McLaughlin Funeral Home of Clay Center is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Karnes was born March 31, 1907, to Jacob and Anna (Walter) Batt in Hastings. She attended Lincoln Elementary and Hastings Senior High School. On Jan. 3, 1925, she married Clarence Schreiner. They later divorced. On Oct. 20, 1950, she married Dencil Karnes. She worked as a seamstress for Mode-O-Day in Hastings for 22 years before retiring. In 1969 her husband died.
She was a member of the New York Congregational Church in Hastings and the Eagles No. 592.
Survivors are one son, Gene Schreiner of Hastings; one daughter, Nancy Godtel of Clay Center; nine grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son; one sister; and nine half brothers and sisters.
Memorials may be given to the church or the family.

John E. Goldenstein
Former Inland resident John Ellsworth Goldenstein, 72, of Omaha, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, in Omaha.
Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Omaha. Burial will be in Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Omaha. Visitation is until 8 p.m. today at Roeder Mortuaries Inc. in Omaha.
Mr. Goldenstein was born April 24, 1927, to John and Clara Goldenstein in Inland. He married Janet Harves. He was a salesman for a cigarette company.
Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Lynn Wolf and Debra Kronschnabel, both of Omaha; one son, Brad of Omaha; one sister, Evelyn Andersen; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister.
Memorials may be given to the donor's choice.

Donald S. Goedert
Former Hastings resident Donald S. Goedert, 79, of Grand Island, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, at Greater Nebraska Health Center Grand Island Chapter due to complications from lung cancer.
Memorial services are 1 p.m. Saturday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home in Grand Island with the Rev. David Vaughn officiating. Burial will be at a later date. There is no visitation. The remains were cremated.
Mr. Goedert was born Sept. 12, 1920, to John and Rebecca (Beck) Goedert in Sutherland. He grew up in Sutherland and graduated from St. Patrick High School in North Platte in 1938. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He then lived in Nebraska, Indiana and California. He moved to Hastings in 1970 where he worked as a painter for Turner Brothers, Parker Painting and Diamond B Construction. On April 28, 1978, he married Dianne Blauhorn. They moved to Central City in 1994 where he worked at the Grand Island Veterans Home as a maintenance painter. He and his wife moved to Grand Island in 1996. He retired in 1999.
He was a member of the Victory Bible Fellowship in Grand Island.
Survivors are his wife; two sons, Philip Michael "Mike" of Yankton, S.D., and Gregory D. of Coshocton, Ohio; one daughter, Kimberly Shada of Coshocton; two brothers, Clarence and Raymond, both of North Platte; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to the family's choice.

Donald W. 'Don' Nienhueser
Juniata resident Donald W. "Don" Nienhueser, 80, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at Kenesaw Haven Home.
Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at Faith Lutheran Church in Hastings with the Rev. Carl Rehwaldt officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings with military rites conducted by the Kenesaw American Legion Post No. 268. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Jackson-Wilson Funeral Home in Kenesaw.
Mr. Nienhueser was born July 18, 1919, to Fred and Wilhemenia (Einspahr) Nienhueser in Adams County. He attended Zion Lutheran Parochial School in Wanda for eight years. On Feb. 5, 1944, he married Eleanor Finnigsmier in Grand Island. From 1944-46 he served in the U.S. Army during World War II and in the Korean War. He received the Purple Heart. He then farmed and retired in 1982.
He was a member and past elder of Faith Lutheran Church. He was a past township assessor and past member of the Kenesaw Board of Education and served on the county Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service office board for six years. He also was a 4-H leader for several years.
Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Donna Ruhter of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sons, Craig of Kenesaw and Wayne of Juniata; two sisters, Emma Lierman of San Ramon, Calif., and Adeline Hill of Parsons, Kan.; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters.
Memorials may be given to the church.

Carolyne A. Williams
Hastings resident Carolyne Ann (Lapp) Williams, 84, of Good Samaritan Village Villa Grace, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at Villa Grace.
Graveside services are 10 a.m. Saturday at Parkview Cemetery in Hastings with James Donley officiating. Visitation is 1-9 p.m. Friday and 8-9:30 a.m. Saturday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings.
Mrs. Williams was born Sept. 19, 1915, to John George and Ann Margaret (Schmidt) Lapp in Hastings. She graduated from Hastings Senior High School. She worked at Woolworth's and the Naval Ammunition Depot in Hastings. On May 18, 1941, she married Jesse Vern Williams. He preceded her in death on Aug. 1, 1987.
She was a member of the New York Avenue Congregational Church.
She also was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
Memorials may be given to the New York Avenue Congregational Church.

Glenn W. Imler
Rural Mankato, Kan., resident Glenn William Imler, 75, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at his home.
Services are 1 p.m. Wednesday at Megrue-Price Funeral Home chapel in Superior. A private family burial will be at a later date.
Mr. Imler was born Dec. 8, 1924, to William and Nora (Osborne) Imler near Hardy. He lived in Jewell County, Kan. On May 28, 1948, he married Yvonne "Vonnie" Purcell in Belleville, Kan. He worked as a farmer and as a welder for Ideal Cement Co. in Superior for more than 30 years.
Survivors are his wife; two sons, Rodney of Glenvil and Daniel of Mankato; one daughter, Myrna Kay Wilson of St. George, Kan.; one sister, Twila Rothchild of Mankato; one brother, Paul of Doniphan; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters.
Memorials may be given to Solomon Valley Hospice or Montrose United Methodist Church.

Lois M. Lines
Nelson resident Lois Mable (Swett) Lines, 88, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at Brodstone Memorial Nuckolls County Hospital in Superior.
Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Klawitter-Price Funeral Home chapel in Nelson with the Rev. Robert Tate officiating. Burial will be in the Nelson Cemetery. Visitation is until 5 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Lines was born Jan. 21, 1912, to Lester M. and Georgie (Dunn) Swett near Nelson. On July 11, 1934, she married Robert O. Lines. They lived in Nora and Oak until 1955 when they moved to Clark County, Wash. She worked as a poultry processor at Bigger & Better Poultry in Battle Ground, Wash., and Hunt Poultry in Portland, Ore. On Feb. 26, 1985, her husband died. In 1987 she returned to Oak.
She was a charter member of the Nelson Seventh Day Adventist Church and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Nelson.
Survivors are three daughters, Aleene Schaeffer Mills of Ong, Diane Brunese of Vancouver, Wash., and Patricia Brusseau of Oak; two sons, Steven of Anchor Point, Alaska, and Rockne of Vancouver; two sisters, Gladys Coulter of Longview, Wash., and Patricia Cramer of Seattle; 16 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She also was preceded in death by one son, Nicholas Murray; one sister; one brother; and two grandchildren.
Memorials may be given in care of the family, Rt. 1, P.O. Box 126A, Ong, NE 68452.

Patricia A. Sperry
Former Hastings resident Patricia A. (Harkins) Sperry, 70, of Lincoln, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, in Lincoln.
Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at Metcalf Funeral Home in Lincoln. Private burial in Juniata will be at a later date. Visitation is 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. The remains were cremated.
Mrs. Sperry was born Aug. 16, 1929, to Delbert and Ella (Garlick) Harkins in Hastings. She was an operator and service assistant for 36 years at Lincoln Telephone Co. She worked in Hastings and Lincoln and retired in 1992.
She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers, Volunteer Rape Spouse Abuse Crisis Line and C.W.A. Local No. 7470.
Survivors are three daughters, Angela Petito of Omaha, Melissa Eckhardt of Hastings and Theresa Karre of Lincoln; two brothers, Raymond of Santa Fe, N.M., and Jim of St. Agatha, Ontario, Canada; one sister, Amy Johnson of Orleans; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Hilary; two sisters; and one brother.
Memorials may be given to the Capital Humane Society.

Jessie I. Million
Former Tribland area resident Jessie I. (Kelly) Million, 88, of Lincoln, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, at her home.
Services are 1 p.m. Saturday at Simonson-Williams Funeral Home chapel in Red Cloud with the Rev. Mike Lehr officiating. Burial will be in Cora Cemetery in Lebanon, Kan.
Mrs. Million was born Dec. 5, 1911, to C.H. and Zella (Johnson) Kelly in Rowellwich. She attended school at Rowellwich until fourth grade when she moved with her family to Inavale. She graduated in 1930 from Inavale High School. She attended Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln and then taught rural school in Webster County. On Sept. 12, 1935, she married Raymond F. Million in Smith Center, Kan. They farmed near Lebanon. In 1954 they moved to Lincoln where she taught school. They moved to Atwood, Colo., in 1968 where she was employed by Stuckey's. In 1976 they moved to Hastings and retired in 1978. They moved to Lincoln in 1984. On April 8, 1985, her husband died.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Hastings, the Retired Teacher's Association and Clown Alley 40 in Lincoln.
Survivors are one daughter, Gaylene Marcum of Omaha; one son, Gary of Lincoln; one sister, Earlene Leech of El Dorado Hills, Calif.; two brothers, Charles of Colorado Springs, Colo., and William of Kennewick, Wash.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.

Mae Overmiller
Lebanon, Kan., resident Mae (Haresnape) Overmiller, 88, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, at her home.
Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at Thornburg Church in Smith County, Kan., with the Rev. Roger Thomas officiating. Burial will be in the Cora Cemetery north of Lebanon. Simonson-Williams Funeral Home of Red Cloud is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Overmiller was born July 6, 1911, to John and Viola (Upp) Haresnape in Lebanon. She attended a rural Smith County school and the Lebanon school. In October 1930 she married Gerald Overmiller. They farmed near Lebanon. On Jan. 19, 1973, her husband died.
She was a member of Thornburg Church.
Survivors are two sons, Bill of Bellaire, Kan., and Bob of Lebanon; eight grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by one brother; one sister; and two great-grandchildren.

Melvin I. Rothrock
Former Tribland area resident Melvin I. Rothrock, 82, of Delta, Colo., died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, at Colorow Care Center in Olathe, Colo.
Private memorial services will be at a later date. The remains were cremated. Montrose Valley Funeral Home in Montrose, Colo., is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Rothrock was born Jan. 6, 1918, to Ira and Helen (Ochsner) Rothrock in Sutton. He grew up and attended school in Hastings. He worked as a baker before serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He then returned to Hastings where he worked for the Kansas-Nebraska Gas Co. until 1967. On Oct. 24, 1967, he married Norma Scott. They moved to Denver in 1968 where he worked for the Dow Chemical Co. at the Rocky Flats facility. He also worked as a sheet metal fabricator until retirement in 1980. He and his wife then moved to Cedaredge, Colo., and later Delta.
He was a member of the American Legion and 40 and 8.
Survivors are his wife; two sons, Steve of Salina, Kan., and David of Denver; one stepson, Robert Scott of Lancaster, S.C.; four stepdaughters, Norma Kay Rothrock, Sandra Scott and Chris McEuen, all of Denver; and Audrey Gartner of Ayr; one sister, Mareitta Noble of Cedaredge, Colo.; 17 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.

Harold J. Hornbacher
Sutton resident Harold Jacob Hornbacher, 95, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, at the Sutton Community Home.
Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at the Hope Reformed Church in Sutton with the Rev. George Horner officiating. Burial will be in the Sutton Cemetery. Kohler Mortuary of Sutton is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Hornbacher was born Nov. 19, 1904, to Reinhold and Christina (Schmidt) Hornbacher in Sutton. He attended Cottage School in Sutton. On Aug. 16, 1925, he married Edna Hildegard near Lushton. They farmed near Sutton until 1933 when he sold the farm. He then worked in Lincoln but returned to Sutton one year later. He worked as a custom hauler, helped his father with steam engines for moving houses and running trashing and shelling machines. He also worked on a farm. He retired from farming in 1974.
He was a member of the Hope Reformed Church and a past member of the Sutton Volunteer Fire Department.
Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Janet Jewah of Yuma, Ariz., and Meva Jean Tintelnot of Pensacola, Fla.; one son, Rolland of Los Angeles; one sister, Vera Romaine of St. Simon Island, Ga.; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers.
Memorials may be given to the family.

Ruth E. Smith
Hastings resident Ruth E. (Mihm) Smith, 68, of No. 6 Windsor Drive died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at the Harvard United Church of Christ with the Rev. Stanley Crawford officiating. Burial will be in the Harvard Cemetery. There is no visitation. The remains were cremated. Alberding-Wilson Funeral Home of Harvard is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Smith was born Feb. 12, 1931, to Frank and Matilda (Alberding) Mihm in Harvard. On June 27, 1954, she married Harold E. Smith. They lived in Colorado Springs, Colo., for a short time before moving to Harvard where they farmed for 36 years. After retirement, they moved to Hastings.
She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ and was active in Meals on Wheels.
Survivors are her husband; two daughters, Deb Tobler of Harvard and Brenda Prieksat of LeMars, Iowa; two sons, Tim of Blair and Lonnie of Johnston, Iowa; and 13 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers.
Memorials may be given to the family.
