U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

John Albers
Hildreth resident John Albers, 87, died Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at Grandview Manor in Campbell.
Services are 3 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hildreth with the Rev. Kim Stover officiating. Burial will be in Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery south of Hildreth with military rites conducted by the Hildreth VFW. Visitation is 7-9 p.m. today at Jelden-Layton Funeral Home in Hildreth.
Mr. Albers was born May 19, 1913, to Albert and Augusta Alberts in Hildreth. He grew up in the Hildreth area and attended country school near Hildreth. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He then worked for area farmers as a farmhand.
He was a member of the former Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Hildreth.
He was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters.

Floyd A. Porter
Grand Island resident Floyd A. Porter, 97, died Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at the Veteran’s Administration Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services are 10 a.m. Monday at Fox Funeral Home in Beatrice with the Rev. Galen Wray officiating with military honors conducted by American Legion Bitting-Norman Post No. 27. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation begins at 8 a.m. Saturday until services Monday at the funeral home.
Survivors are five sons, including James Ray Sr. and Kenneth, both of Harvard; one daughter, Sharon Mangabat of Harvard; 20 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Samuel Nuss
Sutton resident Samuel Nuss, 72, died Thursday, July 13, 2000, at his home.
Services are 10 a.m. Sunday at Kohler Mortuary chapel in Sutton with the Free German Reformed Salem Church Elders officiating. Burial will be in the Free German Reformed Salem Church Cemetery near Sutton.
Mr. Nuss was born April 27, 1928, to Ephraim K. Sr. and Rosa (Griess) Nuss near Stockham. He attended District 50 country school in Clay County. On Sept. 9, 1948, he married Annetta E. Huber in Clay Center. They farmed near Saronville for more than 42 years. They moved into Sutton in 1988.
He was a member of the Free German Reformed Salem Church. He served on the Sutton Co-op Board from 1982-88.
Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Barb Griess of Sutton and Norma Blackburn of Superior; one son, Melvin of Phoenix; two brothers, Ephraim Jr. and Martin, both of Sutton; five grandchildren; one stepgrandchild; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by one son, Alan, and one brother.
Memorials may be given to the family.

Elsie M. Waring
Bloomington resident Elsie Mae (Anderson) Waring, 93, died Thursday, July 13, 2000, at Franklin County Memorial Hospital in Franklin.
Services are 10 a.m. Monday at Hutchins Funeral Home chapel in Franklin with the Rev. Terry L. Bell officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery at Bloomington. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday and 8 a.m. until services Monday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Waring was born Oct. 16, 1906, to Alfred and Anna Mae (Olson) Anderson on a farm northwest of Bloomington. She attended Bethel rural school and graduated from Bloomington High School in 1925. She attended Hastings College. On Jan. 27, 1929, she married Daniel M. Waring in Mankato, Kan. She taught school in Bloomington and Macon and later was bookkeeper for Waring Garage. On Nov. 5, 1988, her husband died. She also was a correspondent for the Franklin Sentinel and Franklin Chronicle newspapers for several years.
She was a member of Bloomington United Methodist Church until it closed in 1999. She also was a member of the United Methodist Women, Bloomington Community Club and American Legion Auxiliary Paul Hartt Post No. 145 in Bloomington.
Survivors are two sons, Gene of Milford and Lawrence of Bloomington; one daughter, Danene Tupper of Pueblo, Colo.; one brother, George of Fort Smith, Ark.; 12 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by one daughter; two brothers; four sisters; and two great-grandchildren.

Mabel Nelsen
Minden resident Mabel (Lundstrom) Nelsen, 92, died Friday, July 14, 2000, at Kearney County Health Services Hospital in Minden.
Services are 2 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Minden with the Rev. Dr. Bill Hunter officiating. Burial will be in the Minden Cemetery. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. Sunday at Layton Funeral Home in Minden.
Mrs. Nelsen was born Sept. 21, 1907, to August and Anna (Johnson) Lundstrom in Kearney County. She grew up in Kearney County and graduated from Minden High School in 1926. She worked at the First National Bank in Minden for several years. On Jan. 29, 1950, she married Ernest Nelsen. Her husband died in 1983.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, and several clubs, including Chapter N P.E.O. in Minden.
She also was preceded in death by one brother.
Memorials may be given to the church.

Alice L. Schardt
Hebron resident Alice L. (Pohlmann) Schardt, 85, died Thursday, July 13, 2000, in Lincoln.
Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Deshler with the Rev. Duane Fahr officiating. Burial will be in Deshler City Cemetery. Visitation will be 2-9 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at Ahrendts Funeral Home in Deshler.
Mrs. Schardt was born March 22, 1915, to William and Anna Marie (Bergmeier) Pohlmann on a farm south of Deshler. On May 29, 1949, she married Elmer W. Schardt in Deshler. She taught elementary students in a number of schools in Thayer County.
She was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church.
Survivors are her husband; one daughter, Linda Bauer of Denver, Colo.; two sons, Mark of rural Hebron and Robert of Deshler; one brother, Elmer Pohlmann of Deshler; and seven grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by one son, James; and one sister.
Memorials may be given to St. Peter Lutheran Church.

Harold W. 'Bill' Schnitker
Nelson resident Harold W. "Bill" Schnitker, 70, died Friday, July 14, 2000, at his home.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at Nelson Community United Church of Christ with the Rev. Dr. Ralph Sturdy officiating. Burial will be in Nelson Cemetery. Visitation will be 1-9 p.m. Saturday and noon to 9 p.m. Sunday at Klawitter-Price Funeral Home in Nelson.
Mr. Schnitker was born May 11, 1930, to Ferdinand and Ruth L. (Clack) Schnitker in Edgar. He attended Edgar schools and graduated from Edgar High School in 1949. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. On Sept. 29, 1957, he married Janet L. Mosley in Ong. They lived in Edgar for a short time, then moved to Davenport and settled in Nelson in 1961. He was employed by Superior Deshler Co. On March 2, 1994, his wife died.
He was a member of Nelson Community United Church of Christ, the V.F.W. and the American Legion Posts, and the Masonic Lodge, all in Nelson. He also was a member of the Tehama Temple Shrine in Hastings.
Survivors are two daughters, Tami Meyer of Ruskin and Tanya Schnitker of Nelson; and six-grandchildren.
He also was preceded in death by his wife; one son, Marc; and one brother.
Memorials may be given to the family, Route 1 Box 74, Ruskin, NE 68974.

Etta A. Glenn
Hildreth resident Etta A. (Alberts) Glenn, 94, died Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at Franklin County Hospital in Franklin.
Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hildreth with the Rev. Kim Stover officiating. Burial will be in the Hildreth Cemetery. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Glenn was born June 2, 1906, to John and Flora (Fruhling) Alberts in Hildreth. She graduated from Hildreth High School and Kearney State College. On June 4, 1930, she married Halsey "Hod" Glenn. They lived in Hildreth where she taught school. She worked as a substitute teacher after retirement. In 1997 her husband died.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She also was choir director for St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Minden and later at Trinity Lutheran Church. She was a member of Hildreth Lioness Club and past worthy matron of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors are two daughters, Sharon Horacek of Olympia, Wash., and Kathleen Bryant of Hopwood, Pa.; one sister, Flora Kleiber of Everett, Wash.; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Carol Joyce; four brothers; and two sisters.
Memorials may be given to the church, Golden Years Center in Hildreth or the Nebraska Boys Ranch.

Oscar L. Macomber
Hastings resident Oscar L. Macomber, 72, of 1245 Apache Ave., died Saturday, July 15, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Grace United Methodist Church in Hastings with the Rev. Jim Miller officiating. Burial will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Grand Island. Visitation is 5-9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services Wednesday at the church.
Mr. Macomber was born Oct. 20, 1927, to Frank Leslie and Elise Josephine (Solt) Macomber near North Platte. He moved with his family and attended several different schools. He graduated from Grand Island High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Yokahama, Japan. In 1948 he worked as a meat cutter for Jack & Jill in Lexington and Hastings for 41 years. On July 30, 1950, he married Ruth Elizabeth Commins. He retired March 30, 1989.
Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Nancy Stenger of Centreville, Va., and Judy Macomber of Norfolk, Va.; one son, Jerry of Rockville, Md.; and one sister, Marge Burrows of Giltner.
He was preceded in death by one brother.
Memorials may be given to the Cancer Fund or Mary Lanning Hospice.

Phyllis Wilson
Former area resident Phyllis (Morehead) Wilson, 35, of El Dorado, Kan., died Saturday, July 15, 2000, at her home.
Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at Fairview Baptist Church in rural Towanda, Kan. Burial will be in the Towanda Cemetery. Kirby-Morris Funeral Home of El Dorado is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Wilson was born Dec. 13, 1964, to Melvin R. and Velma M. (Brunz) Morehead in Hastings. She grew up in the Trumbull area and graduated from Trumbull High School. She moved to El Dorado 11 years ago. On Aug. 17, 1991, she married Patrick Wilson near Towanda. She was the title clerk and dealt with car sales at Automotive Specialist in El Dorado for eight years.
Survivors are one son, Michael of El Dorado; one daughter, Brittany Wilson of El Dorado; her parents of Trumbull; three brothers, Ron Butler of Lincoln, Jim Morehead of Beatrice and Randy Morehead of St. Paul; and five sisters, Roberta Kindred of Greeley, Colo., Rachelle Eversoll of Commerce City, Colo., Renee Walker of Grand Island, Penny Humphrey of Doniphan and Becky Wolfe of Augusta, Kan.
Memorials may be given to the Hospice, Inc. or Education Trust Fund for her children, in care of the funeral home.

Clarence R. Vogt
Minden resident Clarence R. Vogt, 90, died Saturday, July 15, 2000, at Bethany Home in Minden.
Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at Westminster United Presbyterian Church in Minden with the Rev. Dr. Terry Palmer officiating. Burial will be in the Minden Cemetery. Visitation is 7-8 p.m. today at Layton Funeral Home in Minden.
Mr. Vogt was born Oct. 23, 1909, to Adolph and Emma (Ludke) Vogt in Bridgewater, S.D. He grew up in Bridgewater and moved to the Minden area in 1933. On Jan. 28, 1935, he married Cleo Keedle. They lived in Minden, where he worked for Stadler Brother's both on the farm and as a truck driver. His wife died in 1997.
He was a member of Westminster United Presbyterian Church.
Survivors are two daughters, Janet Rogers and Pat Sullivan, both of Minden; three sons, Lonnie of Milford, Bob of Kearney and Don of Minden; three sisters, Mabel Jensen of Redding, Calif., and Loretta Eklund and Evelyn Jungwirth, both of St. Paul, Minn.; 18 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and one grandchild.
Memorials may be given to the Bethany Home Activity Department or the church.

Lillian L. Dolnicek
Lawrence resident Lillian L. (Kalvoda) Dolnicek, 92, died Sunday, July 16, 2000, at the Blue Hill Care Center in Blue Hill.
Rosary is 8 p.m. today and services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lawrence with the Rev. Dennis Hunt officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Merten-Butler Mortuary of Blue Hill is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Dolnicek was born Nov. 21, 1907, to Emil and Josephine (Belik) Kalvoda in Canby, Minn. She moved with her family near Spring Ranch at an early age. She later moved near Lawrence. On Nov. 27, 1933, she married Joseph E. Dolnicek in Lawrence. He died Aug. 3, 1979.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and its Altar Society.
Survivors are two daughters, Thelma Soucie of Fairfield and Donna Krupicka of Milligan; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers; one sister; and one grandchild.

Rolland D. 'Ron' Sedlacek
Former Hastings resident Rolland D. "Ron" Sedlacek, 69, of Lake Ozarks, Mo., died Sunday, July 16, 2000, at Lake Regional Health Systems of Osage Beach, Mo.
Services are pending with Brand-Wilson Funeral Home of Hastings.

Michael R. Clark
Former Hastings resident Michael R. Clark, 53, of Johnson Lake died Monday, July 17, 2000, at his home.
Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Jerry Gilbreath officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. until services Thursday at the funeral home.
Mr. Clark was born Aug. 1, 1946, to Robert L. and Faye (McIntosh) Clark in Hastings. He graduated from Hastings Senior High School in 1966. On Nov. 12, 1982, he married Diane L. Sunderman. He was part owner and operator of Hastings Greenhouse in Hastings. He also worked for Kully Pipe and Steel in Hastings.
He was a member of the National Rifle Association, Goldwing Road Riders Association and National Street Rod Association. He also was a charter member of Tri City Street Rods and a past member of the Elks Club in Hastings.
Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Andrea Barton and Stefanie Mossman, both of Hastings; his mother of Hastings; two brothers, Jack of Superior and Dan of Hastings; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Memorials may be given to the family.

Mike Scism
Former Edgar resident Mike Scism, 59, of Houston died Thursday, July 13, 2000, in Houston after battling cancer.
Private family memorial services are Friday in Kearney. The remains were cremated. Garden Oaks Funeral Home of Houston is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Scism was born March 12, 1941, to Al and Enid “Betty” (Overturf) Scism in Edgar. He graduated from Edgar High School in 1958. From 1958-61 he served in the U.S. Army. He earned a degree in electrical engineering in 1966 from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. On June 18, 1971, he married Doris Linnebar in Houston. He had worked for Eagleton Engineering in Houston since 1981. He also spent two years in Australia and several months in Russia. He took a five-year sabbatical in the British West Indies.
He was a registered professional engineer in the state of Texas.
Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Michelle Scism and Stephanie Dobson, both of St. Paul, Minn.; his father of Deweese; two brothers, Garth “Tom” of Kearney and Anthony of Aurora; and three sisters, Cheryl McWaters and Mary Kulhanek, both of Kearney, and Karen Anderson of Alma.
He was preceded in death by his mother.

Laura D. Kraus
Hastings resident Laura D. (DuBreuil) Kraus, 81, of 118 Goldbeck Towers, Good Samaritan Village, died Tuesday, July 18, 2000, at her home.
Services are 10 a.m. Friday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Kathleen Kasper officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Fort McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell with Norval Holtmeier officiating. There is no visitation.
Mrs. Kraus was born April 27, 1919, to Armand and Margaret (Gelger) DuBreuil in Philadelphia. She graduated from Temple University of Nursing in Philadelphia in 1948. From 1949-53 she served in the U.S. Army. On Dec. 16, 1950, she married James F. Kraus. She was a registered nurse at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. She and her husband lived in Lexington for several years before moving to Hastings in 1997. Her husband died Feb. 22.
She was a past member of United Nations Nurses Association.
Survivors are one daughter, Nancy Yurk of Hastings; one sister, Louise Troy of Port Washington, N.Y.; and two grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by three brothers.
Memorials may be given to the Mary Lanning Hospice in Hastings.

Helen B. Hansen
Superior resident Helen B. (Sandy) Hansen, 94, died Monday, July 17, 2000, at Good Samaritan Center in Superior.
Services are 10 a.m. Friday at Megrue-Price Funeral Home chapel in Superior with the Rev. Jon Albrecht officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Superior. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Hansen was born Aug. 11, 1905, to William and Leona (Dice) Sandy in rural Hardy. At a young age, she was adopted by her aunt and uncle, James and Tillie Morrison. She grew up in Superior and graduated from Superior High School in 1923. She taught in rural Nuckolls County schools for five years. On June 3, 1928, she married Carl Hansen. He died Jan. 3, 1981.
She was a member of the World War I Barracks Auxiliary and Cadams Extension Club.
Surviving is one grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Donna Lea Arasmith.
Memorials may be given in care of the family, 104 Hillside Terrace, Salina, KS 67401.
