Herbert J. Uden
Hastings resident Herbert J. Uden, 78, of 527 S. New York Ave. died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, at VA Nebraska-Western Iowa Health Care System in Grand Island.
Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at Faith Lutheran Church in Hastings with the Rev. Carl Rehwaldt officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is noon to 9 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday with family present from 6-8 p.m. at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.
Mr. Uden was born Feb. 22, 1922, to John and Martha W. (Taute) Uden in Juniata. From 1944-46 he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. On June 3, 1951, he married Jean M. Bunde. He was a supervisor for Friends Trucking in Hastings and later retired from Hastings Pork. On May 14, 1978, his wife died. He married Necia D. Bower on Feb. 14, 1986.
He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, American Legion and the VFW, all in Hastings.
Survivors are his wife; three sons, Lynell W. and Loren H., both of Hastings, and Lynton J. of Juniata; four stepsons, Arley E. Davis and Jeffery A. Davis, both of Omaha, Teddy J. Davis of Naponee and William J. Davis of Campbell; one brother, Ben of Council Bluffs, Iowa; two sisters, Clara Struck of Eldora, Iowa, and Louise Kothe of Juniata; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He also was preceded in death by one sister.
Memorials may be given to the family.

Dorothy Nell (Sittler) Stelling
Deshler resident Dorothy Nell (Sittler) Stelling, 75, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2000, at BryanLGH Medical Center East in Lincoln.
Services are 10 a.m. Friday at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Deshler with the Rev. Duane Fahr officiating. Burial will be in the Deshler City Cemetery. Visitation begins at 9 a.m. Thursday at Deshler Memorial Funeral Home in Deshler.
Mrs. Stelling was born Nov. 25, 1925, to George A. and Augusta D. (Bittner) Sittler in Deshler. She attended schools in Deshler and graduated from Deshler High School. On July 29, 1945, she married Vernon Stelling in Deshler.
She was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church and a former member of the church's Ladies Aid. She was active in Cub Scouts.
Survivors are her husband; one son, Steven of Kearney; one daughter, Sally Fink of Crete; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by three brothers.

Leola C. (Schutte) Bruning
A memorial has been established.Bruning resident Leola C. (Schutte) Bruning, 84, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2000, in Hebron.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Bruning with the Rev. Michael Osberg officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation begins at noon Thursday at Farmer & Son Funeral Home in Geneva.
Mrs. Bruning was born March 17, 1916, to Wilhelm and Louise (Scheiding) Schutte in Cowles. She married Victor W. Bruning.
Survivors are her husband; one son, David of Bruning; one daughter, Ruth Meisgeier of Sioux City, Iowa; two sisters, Louise Weber of Hebron and Valetha Hoops of Lingle, Wyo.; and four grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to Blue Valley Lutheran Home in Hebron.Grand Island resident Ruth I. (Sailing) Bruce, 80, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, at Tiffany Square Care Center in Grand Island.

Edith G. Hinrichs
Hastings resident Edith Gesina (Flesner) Hinrichs, 91, of Good Samaritan Village Village Terrace No. 108, died Friday, Aug. 11, 2000, at Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion.
Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Bill Liddell officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Hastings. Visitation is 2-9 p.m. Sunday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday with family present 6:30-8:30 p.m., and 9 a.m. until services Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Hinrichs was born Aug. 30, 1908, to John and Gesina (Dane) Flesner in Clay County. She attended country school in Clay County. On Oct. 31, 1934, she married Reent Hinrichs. They lived on a farm near Glenvil. She moved to Good Samaritan Village in 1967. In 1984 her husband died. She worked at Good Samaritan Village for 20 years as a cook and in laundry.
She attended St. Paul’s Lutheran Church near Glenvil and All Saints Chapel at Good Samaritan Village.
Survivors are two daughters, Rosalie Reeg and Jan Reeg, both of Genoa; two sons, Fredric of Trumbull and Richard of Glenvil; 16 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three brothers and five sisters.
Memorials may be given to Good Samaritan Village Village Terrace.

Anthony S. Chesbro
Anthony S. Chesbro, 3 months, infant son of Bryan and Jennie (Dishon) Chesbro of Salina, Kan., died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Kan.
Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at Carlson-Becker Funeral Home in Solomon, Kan., with the Rev. Frank Reichart officiating. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Monday with family present and 8:30 a.m. until services Tuesday at the funeral home.
Survivors are his parents; one brother; one sister; six grandparents; four great-grandparents, including Shirley Nelson of Hastings; and one great-great-grandmother.

Marie E. Johnson
Hastings resident Marie E. (Schlitt) Johnson, 86, of Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, at Perkins.
Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Dr. Sam Rathod officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. until services Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Johnson was born July 7, 1914, to William and Elizabeth (Schriener) Schlitt in Hastings. She graduated from Hastings High School in 1932. In November 1944, she married George Johnson. She was a secretary for Central Nebraska Public Power Tri-County. In 1967 her husband died.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church and Order of the Eastern Star, both in Hastings.
Survivor is one sister, Minnie Schlitt of Hastings.
She also was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.
Memorials may be given to the family.

Mildred L. Hays
Former area resident Mildred L. (Wunderlich) Hays, 89, of York died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, at The Hearthstone Care Center in York.
Memorial services are 11 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Giltner with the Rev. Nora Leeds officiating. Private family burial will be at a later date at the Giltner Cemetery. The remains were cremated. There is no viewing or visitation. Lewis Funeral Chapel of York is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Hays was born July 5, 1911, to Rudolf and Estella (Menzie) Wunderlich in Holyoke, Colo. She attended grade school in Holyoke and moved with her family to Giltner in the sixth grade. She graduated from Giltner High School in 1929. She later taught at Case District Country School near Giltner for two years. On June 7, 1931, she married Bert W. Hays in Giltner. He died July 8, 1998.
She was a member of the Giltner and Aurora United Methodist churches, where she taught Sunday School and was a Youth Fellowship leader. She was a Nebraska Conference Annual Delegate for the Giltner church. She was a member of the County Extension Club in Giltner, Giltner Women's Club, the American Federation of Women's Clubs, Giltner Library board and National Campers and Hikers Association. She was a volunteer for the Plainsman Museum in Aurora, served on the Governor's Board of Aging and was active in the local and state chapters of American Association of Retired Persons. She was past worthy matron of both Giltner and Aurora chapters of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors are one daughter, Sheila A. Hubbard of York; one foster daughter, Faith Scott of Colony, Texas; two sons, E.W. "Will" of San Diego and Wayne of Malibu, Calif.; one sister, Edith Gaymon of Denver; 10 grandchildren; five foster grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.
Memorials may be given to the church.

Rosa H. Skiles
Franklin resident Rosa Hilda (Bauerle) Skiles, 93, died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, at the Franklin Nursing Center in Franklin.
Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Peace Lutheran Church in Alma with the Rev. William Runaas officiating. Burial will be in the Alma Cemetery. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Banta-Torrey Funeral Home in Alma.
Mrs. Skiles was born Feb. 21, 1907, to Albert Christian and Lydia Barbara (Ott) Bauerle in Naponee. She attended Sindt Rural School District 14 through the eighth grade and graduated from Naponee High School in 1925. On Feb. 13, 1929, she married Harold Shelton Skiles at Alma. They lived on her husband's farm northwest of Naponee until 1945 when they moved south to another farm. In 1958 they moved to a farm north of Naponee and then into Alma in 1975. On Oct. 17, 1984, her husband died. She had been a resident of Franklin Nursing Center since 1996.
She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Republican City and the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America. She also was a former member of the Salem Extension Club.
Survivors are two sons, Dale of Alma and Lyle of Franklin; five grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
Memorials will be established at a later date.

Valores R. Raatz
Hebron resident Valores R. (Worm) Raatz, 70, died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, in Lincoln.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Grace Lutheran Church in Hebron with the Rev. Bruce W. Berggren officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Hebron. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at Price Funeral Home in Hebron and two hours prior to services Tuesday at the church.
Mrs. Raatz was born Dec. 24, 1929, to Eldon and Anna (Erdmann) Worm in Hebron. She attended country schools and graduated from Hebron High School. On May 28, 1950, she married Charles L. Raatz. She was a secretary for Little Blue Natural Resources District, Lincoln Telephone and Telegraph Co., Ford garage and the Thayer County Courthouse, all in Hebron. She then retired.
She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and its Anna Circle. She also was a member of the church choir.
Survivors are her husband; two sons, James of Fremont and Jon of Fairbury; two sisters, Loetta Raatz and Norma Bartling, both of Hebron; and six grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to the family's choice.

Evelyn B. Boals
Sutton resident Evelyn B. (Piper) Boals, 74, died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, at the Sutton Community Home in Sutton.
Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Federated Church in Sutton with the Rev. Bill Jardine officiating. Burial will be in the Sutton Cemetery. Kohler Mortuary of Sutton is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Boals was born Aug. 3, 1926, to DeForrest and Sarah "Addie" (Rhoades) Piper in Bradshaw. She attended school in Bradshaw and then worked in York. On June 26, 1948, she married Bernard Boals in Kansas. They lived in York and Saronville and moved to Sutton in 1960. She worked at the Cozy Corner in York, Ted's Highway Cafe in Sutton and at the Sutton American Legion Club. She also hung and sold wallpaper and did catering in the area.
She was a member of the Federated Church and American Legion Auxiliary in Sutton.
Survivors are her husband; two sons, Rick of Fort Worth, Texas, and Randy of Sutton; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by seven brothers and one sister.
Memorials may be given to the Sutton American Legion Auxiliary or the church.

Esther Conyers
Minden resident Esther (Baker) Conyers, 97, died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, at Bethany Home in Minden.
Services are 3 p.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church in Minden with the Rev. Kathy Bryant officiating. Burial will be in the Minden Cemetery. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at Layton Funeral Home in Minden.
Mrs. Conyers was born Aug. 9, 1903, to Richard and Alice (Pennington) Baker in Kearney County. She attended Minden Public Schools. On June 4, 1930, she married Walter Conyers. They farmed in the Heartwell and Norman areas until retiring and moving into Minden in 1973. In 1979 her husband died.
She was a member of First Christian Church.
Survivors are one daughter, Shirley Thaut of Minden; one son, Lyle of Grandbury, Texas; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by one son, Duane; one grandchild; and six brothers and sisters.
A memorial fund has been established in her name.

Kenneth J. Bolte
Former Lawrence resident Kenneth J. Bolte, 70, of Denver died Friday, Aug. 11, 2000, at Arkansas Manor Nursing Home in Denver.
Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Blue Hill with the Rev. James Schrader officiating. Burial is 1 p.m. Wednesday at Assumption Cemetery in Deweese with the Rev. Dennis Hunt officiating. Merten-Butler Mortuary of Blue Hill is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Bolte was born Sept. 4, 1929, to Henry M. and Anna E. (Wasia) Bolte in Lawrence. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War from 1950-54. He worked as a truck driver. In 1983 he moved from McCook to Denver.
Survivors are two sisters, Lorane Bolte of Blue Hill and LaVeta Cecava of York; three brothers, Robert of Blue Hill, Lannis of Jules, Kan., and Elon of Christmas Valley, Ore.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
Memorials may be given to the church.

Lennis Estep
Superior resident Lennis Estep, 77, died Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, at Brodstone Memorial Nuckolls County Hospital in Superior.
Services are 2 p.m. Friday at Williams Funeral Home chapel in Superior with the Rev. Mark Diehl officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Superior.
Mr. Estep was born Aug. 2, 1923, to Arthur and Lillian (Troudt) Estep in Nuckolls County. He attended Oak Creek Grade School in Jewell County, Kan., and graduated in 1942 from Superior High School. He worked for Safeway grocery store in Superior for one year. On Feb. 4, 1946, he married Betty Lee Marshall in Mankato, Kan. He farmed in Jewell County until retiring in 1985. On Sept. 8, 1984, his wife died.
He also was preceded in death by one sister.
Memorials may be given to the donor's choice.

Irene C. Ellermeier
Bruning resident Irene C. (Hinrichs) Ellermeier, 83, died Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, in Geneva.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Bruning with the Rev. Michael Osberg officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation begins at noon Wednesday at Farmer and Son Funeral Home in Geneva.
Mrs. Ellermeier was born Oct. 9, 1916, to John and Marie (Eggers) Hinrichs in Glenvil. She married Robert Ellermeier. He died in 1999.
Survivors are five daughters, JoAnn Hohensee of Blair, Dorothy Elliott of Wilcox, Ruth Starck and Janice Rubin, both of Houston, and Marilyn Neville of Lincoln; one brother, Roland of Omaha; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to the family.

Debra L. Hultquist
Former Hastings resident Debra Lynn (Hedlund) Hultquist, 43, of Plano, Texas, died Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, at her home.
Services are pending with Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings.
