Married Betty Ann Tisthammer of Albion (7/29/43) at Williams Field, Chandler, Ariz. 1940 graduate, Albion High School. Entered Army, December 1940. Served U.S. Army Air Corps during WW II. As a pilot in the 416th Night Fighter Squadron (12th Air Force), he flew in the European Theater, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with two Oak Clusters. Returning to Nebraska after the war, he earned his BS (1948) and his Ph.D. (1952) from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Employed, U.S. Department of Agriculture as part of the Agricultural Research Service and was located at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Department of Agronomy (1952-86). Along with longtime colleague John Schmidt, Johnson was co-leader of internationally recognized Nebraska Wheat Research Team.
