McBey -- Mollie (Fox), 79, Mount Vernon, Wash., passed away of cancer Monday (10/7/2002). Born, Lincoln (5/17/23) to Henry and Katherine Fox. Graduate, Lincoln High School, 1941. Moved to Everett, Wash., 1947. Member: VFW Post 933 Auxiliary, Germans from Russia, Air Force Sergeants Auxiliary. Mollie worked in the offices of various lumberyards and mills in Everett. She was an excellent seamstress, enjoyed woodworking and, with her husband, remodeled homes and built a summer cabin upriver.

Thompson -- Katherine Clarke, 91, Lincoln, died Thursday (10/10/2002). Born, Rock Port, Mo. (9/27/11), to Samuel M. and Mathilda Stone Clarke. Graduated, Rock Port High School, 1928; attended William Woods College, Fulton, Mo. 1929-31; University of Nebraska, 1931-32, B.A. from the Teachers College. Katie was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta and of various campus activities and taught kindergarten at Huntington Elementary School in University Place, 1933-34, and was the receptionist at Beghtol, Roe & Rankin Law Firm, 1934-35.

She married Elwood N. "Jack" Thompson (8/7/35) at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Lincoln. She and Jack resided in London, England, Geneva, Switzerland, and Berlin, Germany in 1935 and 1936 while he was on a scholarship from the Columbia University School of Journalism. Katie enjoyed concerts, plays, museums and arts galleries there before moving to Des Moines, Iowa, in 1936, Washington, D.C., in 1937, and to Greenwich Village in New York City in 1940. Katie was active in the League of Women Voters and helped revive the Greenwich Village chapter. She studied drawing and art, toured galleries and museums and attended concerts and grand opera.

After moving to Alexandria, Va., just outside Washington, D.C., in 1943, Katie took flat-saddle riding lessons, started a sewing circle, joined the Kappa Alpha Theta alumni chapter and volunteered at the Alexandria Public School and the Beverley Hills Church Day School.

She moved to Riverside, Conn., in 1947 where she was involved with the Playmakers community theater and with the Riverside School PTA. Katie returned to Lincoln in 1950, where she was a longtime and devoted member of the Friday Book Club and Kappa Alpha Theta Alumni Association. She also worked with the Red Cross, Sheridan Elementary School PTA, Campfire Girls, Cub Scouts, Girls Scouts and the Boy Scouts. She took courses in botany at the University of Nebraska and was an avid reader of English literature and history. Katie played golf and rode horses, her favorite being Tumbleweed, the trusty palomino. She was an enthusiastic member of the Sunday night Possum Hollow picnic group for 50 years. She also rode and enjoyed identifying wild flowers in Estes Park. She and Bill Stenten bred and raised saddlebred horses.

Katie and Jack co-funded the Thompson Family Fund in support of the Lied Center for the Performing Arts Program Fund, the Elwood N. and Katherine Thompson Distinguished Professorship of Modern World History at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the Thompson Family Fund of the Cooper Foundation, and the endowment for maintenance of the grounds of St. Matthew's Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters and brothers-in-law, Maureen and Charles "Gus" Gustafson, Della and Ralph James; brother, James; uncle and aunt, Emmett D. and Fanny Clarke Douglas; and great-granddaughter, Sydney Thompson.

Survivors: husband, E.N. "Jack" Thompson; daughter, son-in-law, Kit and Gerry B. Dimon, Lincoln; son, daughter-in-law, Art and Carol Ronin Thompson, Lincoln; sister-in-law, Georgia Anderson Clarke, Houston; grandchildren and spouses, Bill and Terri Dimon, Katherine and Tom Graf, Sarah and Al Linderman, Doug and Liz Thompson, Anne and Bradley Brandt; great-grandchildren, Walker and Francine Dimon, Eli and Katherine Graf, John and Anna Linderman, Ry Thompson, Madalyn and Will Brandt; nephews, nieces, spouses and children: Tom, Lisa, Joshua, Liz and Taylor Clarke; Doug, Lisa and Crispin Clarke; Della Clarke, her friend Anne Steiber, and Della's daughters, Katie and Emma; Sam and Mary Gustafson.
