Robert Mooney
Robert Mooney, 76, of Stromsburg, father of Aurora resident Linda Zade, died Saturday, July 15, 2006 at Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg. A memorial service was held Tuesday, July 18 at the United Methodist Church in Stromsburg with Pastor Dan Spearow officiating. Inurnment was in the Laclede Cemetery near Polk. Robert Claude Lee Mooney was born April 23, 1930 to Raymond John and Rachael Julia (Moore) Mooney at Elgin. He attended schools in Pierce and Randolf. He worked on a ranch with his father near Ewing and then began working for a construction company installing electrical hookups. On June 21, 1952 he married Bonnie Louise Pope at the Randolf Methodist Church in Randolf. He continued in the construction business and the family lived in various places including Norfolk, Valentine, Neligh, O'Neil, settling in Stromsburg in 1953. He continued to work construction for a short period of time. In 1954 he began working for the Polk County Rural Electric Association as a lineman and retired after 38 years of service. He enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, canning, gardening, cooking, playing solitaire on the computer and home repair. He also enjoyed woodworking and building cedar chests, cabinets and toy trucks for his family members. He was a 42 year long member of the Stromsburg Volunteer Fire Department, Good Sam Camping Club, attended the Methodist Church and served as janitor for a number of years. He also helped with Boy Scouts. Heliked to be active and help people wherever he was needed. Survivors include his wife Bonnie of Stromsburg; two sons, Gordon (Diane) Mooney and David (Donnette) Mooney, all of Stromsburg; four daughters, Linda (Wallace) Zade of Aurora, Jeannette (David) Elwell of Tekamah, Kathleen (David) Hunt of Tupelo, Miss. and Patricia (Lewis) Kowalski of Polk; one brother, Raymond (Betty) Mooney of Grand Island and Holdrege; one sister, Carol (Jim) Dietz of Stamford; 16 grandchildren, four great grandchildren and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Rachael Mooney and two sisters, Marion Stevens and Juanita Coulter. Memorials are suggested to the family.

Robert J. Owens
Robert J. Owens, 82, of Lincoln, father of Aurora resident Michael Owens, died Sunday, July 16, 2006 in Aurora. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 19 at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home, 6800 S. 14th St..in Lincoln. Private burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Park. Mr. Owens was born June 11, 1924 in Arcadia to Bryan & Lola (Myers) Owens. He was a member and elder of Community of Christ Church in Lincoln. He retired from the Air Force after serving over 23 years and was a World War II and Korean War veteran, Survivors include two sons, Dr. Robert J. Owens Jr. of O'Neill and Michael (Jill) Owens of Aurora; six grandchildren, Wendy Kullberg of Olathe, Kan., Jenny Stebbing of Lincoln, Ernest Owens of Huxley, Iowa, Jacob Owens of Lincoln, Jason Owens of Springfield and Ashlee Waring of Lincoln, 12 great-grandchildren; one sister Shirley (Raymond) Dalby of Eagle Lake He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lydia Owens; a daughter-in-law, Vickie Owens; and sister, Beryle Dalby. Rosemarie Consbruck
Former Giltner resident Rosemarie 'Re' Consbruck, 69, of Juniata, died Wednesday, July 12, 2006 at her home. Mass of Christian Burial was Friday, July 14 at Assumption Catholic Church with Father James Meysenburg officiating. Burial was in the Assumption Cemetery in rural Juniata. Mrs. Consbruck was born Nov. 3, 1936 in Hastings to Melvin and Leola (Griffin) Sims. She graduated from Giltner High School in 1954. She married Jerome G. 'Red' Consbruck April 14, 1956 in Assumption Catholic Church. He died Feb. 2, 1999. She was a homemaker and manager of Casey's Convenience Store in Juniata before her retirement in May of 1999. She was a member of Assumption Catholic Church, American Legion Auxiliary in Juniata and past member of the Altar Society. Survivors include four daughters, Valerie Consbruck and Wade Price of Hastings, Vicki (John) Fasnacht of Lincoln, Gina (Dennis) Schneider of Kearney, Melva (Kevin) Pavelka of Kearney; three sons, Bill Consbruck of Hastings, Jeff (Candy) Consbruck of Hastings, Doug (Leslee) of Juniata; 11 grandchildren; one sister, Carol (Jody) LaBrie of Doniphan; one brother, Richard Sims and Connie Scherer; numerous nieces and nephews.

David Gustafson
David Gustafson, 57, of Grand Island, died Monday, July 17, 2006 in Grand Island. Memorial services will be Friday, July 21 at 11 a.m. in Monroe Evangelical Free Church near Murphy. Pastor Mark Dunham will officiate. Burial will be in the Monroe Cemetery at 10 a.m. Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Higby-McQuiston Mortuary in Aurora with family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. David Leon Gustafson, son of Stanley and Marian (Westlund) Gustafson, was born Jan. 17, 1949 in Grand Island. He spent most of his life on the family farm northwest of Aurora. He attended special education classes in Grand Island until the age of 16, then lived and worked for two years at Martin Luther Vocational Training Center in Beatrice. Following that, he lived at home and was involved in Mid-Nebraska Workshop Services in Grand island for several years. He moved off the farm and into Grand Island with his parents in July of 2004. He loved the farm, church, his family and friends. He was the right-hand man to both his father and mother. He enjoyed music, especially marching bands, drums and old hymns. Survivors include his mother, Marian Gustafson of Grand Island; two brothers, Randall (Linda) Gustafson and Craig (Rachel) Gustafson, all of Phillips; Joyce (Mark) Dunham of Aurora; three nieces and three nephews, many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father in January of 2005 and his grandparents.

Polly A. Rettele
Former Aurora resident Polly A. (Sloan) Rettele, 53, of Collinsville, Ill., died Monday, Aug. 7, 2006 at Memorial Hospital in Belleville, Ill. Funeral services were held Thursday, Aug. 10 at George Renner and Sons Funeral Home in Belleville, Ill., with the Rev. Richard Bersett officiating. Graveside services were held Monday, Aug. 14 at the Stromsburg Cemetery in Stromsburg. She was born July 30, 1953 in Aurora to Clarence and Florence (Eklund) Sloan. She was a waitress at the Pie Pantry in Belleville, Ill. for over 20 years. She is survived by two daughters, Jamie (Lewis) Haines of Glen Carbon, Ill. and Jonnie Rettele of Chicago, Ill.; three grandchildren; her father, Clarence Sloan of York; and six brothers and sisters, Gary (Maureen) Sloan of York, Shirley (Joe) Plock of McCool Junction, Dale (Debbie) Sloan of York, Beverly (Jerry) Troutman of York, Paul (Kim) Sloan of York, and Bobby Sloan of York. She is also survived by her special friend Steve, numerous nieces and nephews and many friends. She was preceded in death by her mother, Florence Sloan and one brother, Richard 'Dickie' Sloan. Peggy Sue Dimmitt
Peggy Sue (Hayes) Dimmitt, 65, of Aurora, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2006. Graveside services were held Tuesday, Aug. 8 at the Grand Island Cemetery. Peggy Sue Hayes, daughter of John T. and Mae Ellen Hayes, was born Oct. 16, 1940 in Lebanon, Ore. She married Rolland R. Dimmitt in April 1959. They lived in California for several years and later moved to Grand Island. She spent her early years as a homemaker, caring for her family. After she received a college degree as an office technical in 1987 she began her career outside the home, working at Chief Automotive of Grand Island. She lived in Burwell and St. Paul until she retired to Aurora. She enjoyed many hobbies, including sewing, knitting, gardening, occasional painting and bird watching, especially cardinals. Her greatest love was her family and friends. Survivors include her five sons and daughters-in-law, Troy E. (Debbie) Dimmitt of Phillips, Cliff (Wendy) Dimmitt of Grand Island, Tom Dimmitt and his fiance Sandy of Grand Island, Travis (Tammy) Dimmitt of Aurora and Jason (Katie) Dimmitt of Mililani, Hawaii; three daughters, Sherry Dimmitt and her fiance Roger of Arvada, Colo., Sonya (Randy) Ammerman of Grand Island and Mischelle (Matt) Wieczorek of High Ridge, Mo.; four siblings, Jimmy, Johnny, Susan and Greg; 18 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; her stepmother, Florence; eight nieces and nephews. W.K. 'Keith' Bailey
W.K. 'Keith' Bailey, 83, of Palmer, father of Aurora resident Marlyn Friesen, died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2006 at St. Francis Skilled Care in Grand Island. Services were Monday, Aug. 14 at the United Methodist Church in Palmer with Revs. Glenn Hubbard and Ken West officiating. Burial was in Hillside Cemetery at Wolbach with military honors by Burton Beyer American Legion Post 120 in Palmer. Mr. Bailey was born Dec. 31, 1922 at Wolbach to Chauncy and Edna (Hennessey) Bailey. He grew up in the Wolbach area and graduated from Wolbach High School in 1941. He entered the U.S. Army in March 1943 and landed on Utah Beach. He earned five battle stars, the CIB and Bronze Star, leading a squad of 10 men in a heavy machine gun company. He also served during the Korean War. He returned to Wolbach and ran the local hotel. He married Bettie Hinkle Nov. 17, 1946. He worked as a farmhand before going to work for the Veterans Administration Hospital in Grand Island where he worked for 29 years as an orderly while he continued working on his farm. He enjoyed Cleveland Indians baseball, Nebraska football and gardening. Survivors include his wife, Bettie Bailey of Grand Island; his children, Marlyn (Arlo) Friesen of Aurora, Glen (Margie) Bailey of Lincoln, Barbara (Darwin) Combs of Central City, Janice Groetzinger of Grand Island, Pattie (Wayne) Gleason of Central City, Robert (Lisa) Bailey of Osceola, Tammy Dizmang of Grand Island and Lonnie Shockley of Clarks; 21 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Glen, Lloyd, Loren, Max and Ward Bailey; one sister, Julie Earl and a granddaughter, Corrie Jean Archer. Doris Folger
Former Aurora resident Doris Irene Goertzen Folger, 84, of Chandler, Ariz. died, Aug. 12, 2006. Services will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 18, at the Evangelical Free Church of Eaton, Eaton, Colo. Mrs. Folger was born Feb. 13, 1922 in Fort Morgan, Colo. to Earl E. and Nellie R. (Feller) Horton. She graduated from Culbertson High School in 1940. She married Henry R. Goertzen Dec.r 28, 1941, and they made their home in Paxton and Aurora before moving to Greeley, Colo. in 1974. She married Carol Folger in October 1977 in Greely, Colo. She retired in 1985 and moved to Mesa, Ariz. with her son, Gary. She enjoyed sewing and quilting. Survivors include her children, Dennis (Pat) Goertzen of Greeley, Colo., Terry Orenchick of Holland, Mich. and Gary Goertzen of Chandler, Ariz; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Viola May Carter
Viola May Djernes Carter of Pocatello, Idaho died Saturday, Sept. 16, 2006 at the Life Care Center of Idaho Falls in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Memorial services were held Friday, Sept. 22 in the Cornelison-Henderson Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Roger J. Bray officiating. Mrs. Carter was born Oct. 20, 1911 in a sod house near Burwell. She was the third child of Martin Larsen and Christine Marie Nielsen Djernes. She graduated from Marquette High School in 1929 as valedictorian, having taken 'normal training' during her junior and senior years. Following a battery of tests, she received a teaching certificate, and taught all eight grades in several one-room schools in Nebraska. She took correspondence courses and attended summer school at the Teachers' College in Kearney. She married Dale D. Carter Oct. 10, 1937. They lived in Denver, Colo.; Chicago, Ill.; and Bremerton, Wash. They moved to Pocatello, where Dale, an electrician, worked at the Naval Ordnance Plant in 1945. They remained in Pocatello except for a 13 month period during 1949-1950 in California. She returned to teaching when her second child started school. She substituted briefly, then taught for four years at Fort Hall, and finally at Lewis and Clark School in Pocatello beginning in 1956. She continued to take college courses evenings and summers, and graduated from Idaho State College in 1957. She retired in 1974. They spent winters in Quartzsite, Ariz. for a number of years. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1987. She was active for many years in Radiant Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, Social Order of the Beauceant, Retired Teachers, the Bannock County Historical Society and other organizations. She served as president of several of these organizations, and received several honors. She was a long-time member of Central Christian Church in Pocatello. Survivors include her children, Judith May Carter Damewood of Hampton, Virginia, Raymond Djernes Carter of Pocatello, Idaho and Richard Dale Carter of Battle Mountain, Nev.; her son-in-law, John Harold Damewood of Hampton, Virginia, and daughter-in law Susanne Elizabeth Lowry Carter of Pocatello; grandson Edward Carter (Jennifer) Damewood; granddaughters Christine Elizabeth Carter (Joseph) Gibbs and Karen Ann Carter and husband Yancy Sanchez of Las Cruces, N.M.; great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale D. Carter; her sister, Marie Magdalena Djernes Jensen of Marquette; and her brother, William Elmer Djernes of Middletown, Calif. Patricia 'Patty' Topham
Patricia M. Topham, 50, of Grand Island, died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2006 at St. Francis Medical Center. Services were held Thursday morning, Sept. 21, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with Father Francis T. Curran, Father Donald E. Larmore and Father Harold R. Kurtenbach officiating. Burial was in the Phillips Cemetery. She was born Nov. 21, 1955 at Grand Island, the daughter of Roger and Helen (Zimmerman) Otto. She grew up in the Phillips area and graduated from the Aurora High School in 1973. On Feb. 14, 1974 she married William Topham at Aurora. After attending St. Francis School of Radiology she worked at St. Francis as a radiology technician. Even after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at age 24, she continued to work at the hospital and at the family farm. She was a member of the Honor Society of the Aurora High School and was active in the American Society of Radiological Technologists and the American Legion Auxiliary. She loved to tell jokes, tease and be teased, loved her kitties, and never met a stranger. Survivors include her father, Roger Otto of Aurora; sister, Kathryn 'Kat' Otto of Grand Island; sister Barbara 'BJ' (Robert) Meyer of Aurora; and brother Mark and (Becky) Otto; a niece and two nephews; and special friend Father Don Larmore. She was preceded in death by her husband, William; her mother and her grandparents. Memorials are suggested to the Multiple Sclerosis Society or the donor's choice.

Anjela Martinez, 17, of Aurora, died Saturday, Sept. 23, 2006 at Memorial Hospital in Aurora. Funeral services were Tuesday morning, Sept. 26 at Faith Community Church in Aurora with Revs. Fred Nofer and Lonnie Ott officiating. Burial was in the Aurora Cemetery. Anjela Elizabeth Martinez, daughter of Alfredo Contreras and Nikkol Dawn (Ott) Martinez, was born July 21, 1989 in Grand Island. She grew up in Aurora and was raised by her great-grandparents, Marvin and Leola Ott. She attended Aurora Public Schools where she enjoyed her classes in the elementary Life Skills Center. She enjoyed her outings with them going swimming and bowling. She attended Faith Community Church in Aurora. Survivors include her great-grandparents, Marvin and Leola Ott of Aurora and Bob and Norma Hornby; grandparents Pam Robledo, Terry and Linda Ott and James and Janet Malone; two brothers, Adrian Martinez and Dante Martinez, both of Evans, Colo.; three sisters, Myrea Martinez of Evans, Colo., Brianna Martinez of Grand Island and Jelena Martinez of Evans, Colo. Verne Sharman
Vern W. Sharman, 88, of Sidney, brother of Hordville resident Peggy Holtorf, died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2006 in Sidney. Funeral services were Wednesday, Sept. 20 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Sidney with Pastor Bradley Heinecke officiating. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery, Sidney. Verne William Sharman, son of William and Hannah Sophia (Johnson) Sharman, was born July 25, 1918 on a farm north of Colton. He attended grade school at Liberty School in rural Cheyenne County through the eighth grade and graduated from Sidney High School on May 13, 1936. He married Lillian Badziong on Sept. 29, 1940 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Sidney. He was engaged in farming and ranching throughout his life. He loved collecting antique things, cars mostly, and also enjoyed hunting and fishing. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Lillian Sharman of Sidney; three sons, Donald (Cindy) Sharman of Lodgepole, Lyle Sharman of Columbus and Gary (Jeanie) Sharman of Columbus; two daughters, Peggy (Maynard) Holtorf of Hordville and Marlene (Don) Wiechman of West Point; 11 grandchildren, Darrell Sharman, Angel Sharman, Jennifer Holtorf, Andrew Holtorf, Katie Holtorf, Scott Holtorf, Jonathan Sharman, Erika Sharman, Jared Sharman, Derek Sharman and Emily Wiechman; two great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Ada Sharman of Sidney; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Rollen W. Roehrs
Former Hampton resident Rollen W. Roehrs, 63 of York, died Saturday, Sept. 23, 2006 at York. Funeral services were Tuesday morning, Sept. 26, 2006 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Hampton with Rev. Loren Cooper officiating. Burial was in the Zion Cemetery. He was born Oct. 13, 1942 at York to Dr Walter and Emma A. (Dose) Roehrs. He was a longtime Hampton area farmer. After his retirement he worked for several years for York County. He was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church at Hampton where he served on the church council and sang in the choir. He was a member of the Hampton Fire and Rescue Department and Hampton American Legion Post #141. He was formerly a member of the Hampton School Board, the Hampton Co-op and enjoyed woodworking. He married Carolyn K. Maronde Nov. 25, 1962 at York. Survivors include two sons, Todd (Mary) Roehrs of Hampton and Troy (Tammy) Roehrs of Blair; one daughter, Michele (Craig) Van Housen of Hampton; grandchildren Brandi, Ashley and Cami Roehrs all of Hampton, Amber and Erika Roehrs of Blair and Taylor, Gavin and Madison VanHousen of Hampton; one sister Joyce (Dr. Duane) Smith of Sioux Falls, S.D.; many nieces and nephews. Marian Bedinger, 72, of Hampton, died Monday, Sept. 25, 2006 at Memorial Community Care in Aurora. Richard Vincent
Richard L. Vincent, 91, of Stromsburg, formerly of Clarks and Central City, died at his daughter's home near Stromsburg on Monday, Oct. 23, 2006. Funeral services will be Thursday, Oct. 26 at 2 p.m. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City with Rev. Dan Spearow officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday, Oct. 25 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Solt Funeral Home in Central City. Burial will be in the Polk Cemetery. Richard LeRoy Vincent, son of Clarence and Myrtle (Waggoner) Vincent, was born on Feb. 1, 1915 southwest of Stromsburg. He received his education at District 43 in Polk County and graduated from Benedict High School. He worked on the family farm until entering the United States Army from Jan. 17, 1942 until Nov. 9, 1945. He served in Puerto Rico. He began farming for himself in 1947. On July 29, 1951 he married Lucille Stockton Kelly. They moved to a small farm near Clarks in 1961. While continueing to farm, he was a heavy equipment operator leveling land in Merrick County and surrounding counties for 11 years. He worked construction in Grand Island for one year and was with the Merrick County Road Department for eight years until his retirement in 1980. He continued to work summers for the county until 1983. In 1997, five days after moving to a home in Central City, his wife died on July 24, 1997. He moved to Stromsburg to live with his daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Tom Fritz in November of 2005. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Clarks and Clarks VFW. During his retirement, he enjoyed providing fresh produce to family and friends from his large garden. He enjoyed fishing and hunting ducks and turkeys. His favorite past time was woodworking and he made various pieces of furniture for his home and family. He also made several turkey calls. He carried on his father's tradition of maintaining a daily diary. Survivors include his daughter, Peggy(Tom) Fritz of Stromsburg; seven grandchildren, Ron and Diana Kelly of Osceola, Karen and Duane Hulse of Utica, Ernest and Jennifer Vincent of Fountain, Colo., Justin Vincent his fianc' Tasha Jackson and Nathan Vincent both of Central City, Jason Fritz of Aurora, and Jennifer and Jay Eilts of Lincoln; 10 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Lucille; two sons, Donald Kelly on Feb. 27, 1992 and James Vincent on March 7, 2006; one grandson, Vance Kelly; and two sisters, Lela Church and Evelyn Richards-Neumann. Clarence Sloan
Clarence T. Sloan, age 91 of York, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2006 at York. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 26 at Metz Chapel in York with the Rev. Jeff Wulf officiating. Burial will follow at the Stromsburg Cemetery. Mr. Sloan was born Oct. 5, 1915 to Thomas Milton and Eliza (Johnston) Sloan in Polk County. On May 26, 1942 he married Florence M. Eklund in Osceola. He farmed and then worked for International Harvester as a mechanic for 32 years. He was a member of the United States Army. He enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid fisherman, hunter and enjoyed boating and camping. He was a woodworker, gardener and enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs. Most of all, he cherished the time spent with his family. Survivors include six children: Gary (Maureen) Sloan of York; Dale (Deb) Sloan of York; Beverly (Jerry) Troutman of York; Shirley (Joe) Plock of McCool Junction.; Paul A. Anna Medaris
Anna Medaris, 81, of Aurora, died Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2006 at Bryan LGH East in Lincoln. Graveside services were held Saturday morning, Nov. 4 at the Aurora Cemetery. A gathering of family and friends followed the graveside at Presbyterian United Church of Christ in Aurora with Rev. Monty Nelson officiating. Anna Maxine Medaris, daughter of Fred and Genevieve (Austin) Penner, was born Aug. 20, 1925 in Stockham where she grew up and graduated from Stockham High School in 1942. She worked at the Grand Island Ordnance Plant, Harvard Air Base and the Aurora Creamery for the next 10 years. She married Maurice "Mose" Medaris in Aurora on march 21, 1952. The lived on a farm south of Aurora until 1973 when they moved into Aurora. They moved to Olathe, Kan. in 1993 to be near their immediate family. Her husband died April 14, 2001. She moved back to Aurora in June of 2005. She was an active member of the Federated Church (Presbyterian UCC) where she was a Sunday school teacher for many years. She also was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary and a sewing club for many years. Survivors include her two sons, James E. Medaris and Jerry W. (Jamie) Medaris; one grandson, Adam N. Medaris and one granddaughter, Sarah K. Johnson, all of Lawrence, Kan.; two brothers, Jake Penner of Grand Island and Lawrence "Curly" Penner of Aurora; one sister, Dorothy Newlun of Aurora. She was preceded in death by her husband and parents; two brothers, Ernie Penner and LeRoy "Fritz" Penner; one sister, Thelma Fenster. Memorials are directed to the Presbyterian UCC in Aurora. Dr. Donald Larson
Former Aurora resident Dr. Donald Larson, 77, of Lincoln, died Thursday, Nov. 2, 2006 at The Monarch in Lincoln. Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 6 at the First Evangelical Covenant Church in Lincoln with Revs. Matt Rudeen and Ralph Sturdy officiating. Burial was in the Aurora Cemetery that afternoon with Rev. Karl Larson officiating. Donald James Larson, son of Oliver E. and Amy (Olson) Larson, was born June 26, 1929 in Wausa where he grew up and attended rural grade schools and graduated from Wausa High School. He attended Wayne State College where he took two years of pre-med. He then returned to the family farm to farm for eight years before returning to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to finish his pre-med. He married Lois Greenwall at Wausa on July 30, 1954. He graduated from UNMC in 1962, then served a year internship at Bryan Hospital in Lincoln and had a practice in Lincoln for an additional year before moving to Aurora. In Aurora, he had a family practice for 21 years. They moved back to Lincoln in 1985 where he was director of the Lincoln Family Practice Program for 10 years. He retired in 1995 and went on to work part-time as a consultant for Nebraska Disability Department. He was involved with Boy Scouts, serving as a Webelos leader and on several scout committees. He was a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians where he was on the Commission on Continuing Medical Education and also served as a delegate. He served as president of the Nebraska Academy of Family Physicians from 1978 to 1979 and was named Family Physician of the Year in 1983. He was a member of the Christian Medical Dental Association, American Board of Family Practice and Nebraska Medical Association. Survivors include his wife, Lois Larson of Lincoln; one son, Dr. David (RoAnne) Larson of Fairfield, Iowa; one daughter, Becky (Tony) Schroeder of Lexington; eight grandchildren, Carissa, Ryan, Kyle, Bethany and Dorian Larson, and John and Danielle (Schroeder) Dennis, Jordan, Kellen Schroeder; one sister, Lorraine Marvin of Bloomfield. Millie Ulmer
Millie E. Ulmer, 83, of North Platte, died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2006 at Great Plains Regional Medical Center. Memorial services will be held at 11a.m. Thursday, Nov. 9 at Carpenter Memorial Chapel with Pastor Don Wilken officiating. She was born April 29, 1923 to C.J. and Stella Barrett in North Platte. In 1941 she graduated from North Platte High School. She married Robert W. Jones in 1945. He died in 1976. She then married Harris Ulmer on Dec. 31, 1977 in North Platte. She was employed for a number of years in bookkeeping for clerk of district court and retired in 1990. She was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church for over 50 years and also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She loved to dance, listen to country music and watch Nebraska football. Survivors include her husband, Harris Ulmer of North Platte; a son, Steve Jones of Denver; a daughter, Becky Meseraull of North Platte; four step-children, Cliff (Phyllis) Ulmer of Utah, Cindy (Ken) Nelson of California, Bill (Quilla) Ulmer of Aurora and Dr. Pam (John Petersen) Ulmer of Omaha; three brothers, Bob and Warren "Mike" Barrett both of North Platte and Hadley Barrett of Colorado; a sister, Wilma Loftus of Alaska; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. Virginia Schaffert
Virginia Schaffert, 83, of Aurora, died Sunday, Nov.. 5, 2006 at Memorial Community Care in Aurora. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 8 at 10:30 a.m. in Messiah Lutheran Church in Aurora with Rev. Cheryl Kester-Beyer officiating. Burial will be in the Aurora Cemetery. Visitation is from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Higby-McQuiston Mortuary with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Virginia Mae Schaffert, daughter of Chris and Edith (Horst) Happold, was born July 3, 1923 on a farm near Doniphan. She grew up in Hamilton County, attended District 47 School and graduated from Hampton High School. She married John Christian Schaffert April 5, 1942 at Salem Lutheran Church in Hampton. She raised their five children on the family farm south of Aurora. Her husband died April 18, 2001. She was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid and Lutheran Women Missionary Society. She also was a member of the Aurora American Legion Auxiliary, Hamilton Manor Auxiliary, Garden Club, Hamilton County Extension Club and Bridge Club. She was involved in 4-H clubs and the Aurora Senior Citizen Center. Survivors include her five children, Sherry (Delmar) Peters of Aurora, John (Lynn) Schaffert II of Rogers, Ark., Deryl "Buck" (Kim) Schaffert of Aurora, Greg (Jean) Schaffert of White Plains, N.Y. and Chris (Mary) Schaffert of Aurora; nine grandchildren, Linda (J.D.) Oswald, Brenda (Jim) King, John (Cauley) Schaffert III, Brian Schaffert, Jesi Rae (Cedrick) McNeal,, Jake Schaffert, Joshua Schaffert, Joel Schaffert, Jennifer (Michael) Serrano and Daniel Schaffert; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Helen (Bill) Morlong of Oceanside, Calif. and Joan (Jim) Blake of Canyon, Texas; one brother, Ken Happold of California. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and three great-grandchildren, Amron Dale Oswald, Leah Jae Oswald and Jodi Page Oswald; one sister, Marguerite Adams and five brothers, Norman, Don, Fred, Robert and Junior Happold.

James Arnold
Former Phillips resident James Casper Arnold, 64, of Lake Havasu City, Ariz. died Aug. 30, 2006. He was born April 18, 1942 in Omaha to Kermit and Lenora (Schirkosky) Arnold. He grew up in Phillips, graduating from Phillips High School in 1961. Following graduation he worked at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant. He entered the U.S. Army Feb. 4, 1964, serving at Cameron Bay during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged Jan. 29, 1966. He was then employed with the Canadian National Railroad in Flint, Mich. until his retirement. He returned to Grand Island, then moved to Lake Havasu in 2000. Survivors include two sons, David Arnold of Kansas City, Mo. and James Arnold of Jefferson City, Mo.; four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Frank Arnold.
