Mike Larsen
Mike Larsen, 49, of Lincoln, died Saturday morning, Oct. 2, 2004 in an automobile accident. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 8 in St. John's Lutheran Church in Kronborg. Rev. Pam Ciulla will officiate. Burial will be in the Aurora Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Higby-McQuiston Mortuary in Aurora. He graduated from Northwest High School in 1973. He married Diann Determan in 1975. His professional career began at Pacesetter Products in the sales division with advancement to management. Most of his career was in sales and the printing industry. Survivors include his father, Marion D. Larsen of Marquette; one brother, Steve (Terri) Larsen of Lincoln; two sisters, Susan (Barry) Rybicki of Scottsdale, Ariz. and Deb (John) Janky of Chapman; two sons, Jason Larsen of Overland Park, Kan. and Chris Larsen of Grand Island; one grandson, Hayden; many nieces and nephews, grandnieces and nephews.

Grace Maw
Former Aurora resident Grace Maw, 83, of Lincoln, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004 at the Ambassador in Lincoln. Funeral services were Thursday, Sept. 30 at the First Christian Church in Aurora. Rev. Grace Audrey Maw, daughter of Milo and Eunice (Warford) Brugh, was born Sept. 26, 1921 in Diller. She grew up in Gage County and graduated from high school there. She married Kenneth Albert Maw on Aug. 1, 1941. They lived in Omaha until he went overseas in the service. When he returned, they moved to Wichita, Kan. In the spring of 1959 they moved to Aurora. She worked in the meat department at Red and White for 25 years. Her husband died June 5, 1988. Survivors include her brother, Norris (Ninah) Brugh of Citrus Heights, Calif.; sisters-in-law, Beulah Marvel of Lincoln and Evelyn Maw of Aurora; several nieces and nephews.

Marjorie Ready
Marjorie Ready, 81, of Giltner, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004 at Memorial Community Care in Aurora. Funeral services were Friday, Oct. 1 at the United Methodist Church in Giltner with Rev. Marjorie Pauline Ready, daughter of Reuel and Ethel L. (Lindgren) Burrows, was born July 1, 1923 in Loma Linda, Calif. She moved to Nebraska with her family in 1930 and grew up in the Giltner area, graduating from Giltner High School in 1941. She taught school for a short time following normal training. She married James Eugene Ready July 25, 1930 in Grand Island. They lived in California from 1944 to 1945 while he served in the U.S. Navy. In December of 1945 they returned to Grand Island where she worked at Overland National Bank. In 1950 they moved to the family farm near Giltner where she enjoyed helping her husband with harvest and stayed busy raising their children. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Giltner where she was involved in the United Methodist Women, was a Sunday school teacher and youth group sponsor for many years. She also was involved in several extension clubs and the Nibble Nots neighborhood club. She loved to bowl and participated in the state and national tournaments. She received a 25-year plaque for bowling in 25 national tournaments. She was president of the Early Risers bowling league. She loved to play cards and games with her grandchildren. She and her husband made many trips to gather genealogy information on the Burrows and Ready families. They also organized and hosted the annual Burrows' family reunions. Survivors include her husband, James Ready of Giltner; three daughters, Carol (Cletus) Kothe of Giltner, Susan (Ernest) Heyen of Giltner and Myra (Joe) Ricceri of Omaha; six grandchildren, Lisa Kothe and her fiance Bradley Bell of Hastings, Eric and Leaha Kothe of Phillips, Kevin Heyen of Jefferson City, Mo., Alex Heyen of Lincoln, Laura Ricceri in Des Moines, Iowa and Adam Ricceri in Kansas City; three sisters, Wylda Sauer of Aurora, Colo., Velma (Hank) Hackman of Lincoln and Shirley (Don) Suck of Grand Island; one brother, Wally (Marge) Burrows of Giltner; many nieces and nephews.

Rusty Williams
Former Hordville resident Rusty Lee Williams, 42, of Duenweg, Mo., died Friday, Oct. 1, 2004 at his home. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6 at Grace Lutheran Church in Central City with Sister Mary Arie and Pastor Tony Nichols officiating. Burial will be in the Hordville Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.soltfh.com. Mr. Williams was born March 6, 1962 in Central City to Donald L. and Joyce E. (Nelson) Williams. He grew up in Central City and graduated from Central City High School in 1981. After graduation he entered the U.S. Navy. While serving onboard the naval ships, he was an air traffic controller for aircraft landing on the ships. While serving in Rota, Spain, he was a fireman. He was honorably discharged from the military in 1985 and lived in Brownsville, Tex. for two years. He returned to Nebraska and lived in the Grand Island, Central City and Hordville areas. He enjoyed babysitting for his sisters' children and for a special family in Grand Island. In March of 2002 he moved to Siloam Springs, Ark. and worked for DaySpring Cards. He had just moved to Duenweg, Mo. and was to begin taking college courses in January. He was baptized and confirmed in Grace Lutheran Church in Central City and currently was a member of the Antioch Church in Siloam Springs. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing cards with his parents, Cornhusker football, music, watching movies, cooking and spending time with his nieces and nephews. Survivors include his parents, Don and Joyce Williams of Central City; three sisters, Donna (Alan) Sautter of Central City, Trudy (Doug) Soll of Grand Island and Brenda (Kirk) Bergereon of Houma, La.; one brother, Todd (Rebecca) Williams of Siloam Springs, Ark; nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews; three aunts, LaDonna (Loren) Davis of Columbus, Joan (Marwin) Rogers of Hordville and Doris Nelson of Aurora; one uncle, Dwaine (Betty) Nelson of Central City; many cousins and friends.

Cathy Bauman
Cathy L. Bauman, 48, of Nebraska City died Wednesday Oct. 13, 2004 at The Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 23 at 2 p.m. at Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City. She was born Sept. 9, 1956 in Lincoln, the daughter of Carl L. and Adeline K. (Fajmon) Bauman. She graduated from Adams Central High School in May of 1975. She moved to Nebraska City in 1998. She worked at the Otoe County Courthouse in the assessor's office, the treasurer's office and was currently at the register of deeds office. She also worked part-time at Bon-Worth at the VF Factory Outlet Mall. She was a member of The Red Hats group and a founding member of the Windmill and Wind Power Museum in Lubbock, TX. Her favorite hobby was restoring windmills. She is survived by two daughters; Jessica Alexandria Rose, stationed at the Air Force Base at Yokota Japan and Jennifer Jo Plettner of Maryville, Mo; her mother Adeline Bauman of Juniata; grandmother Rose Fajmon of Burwell, three sisters; Betty J. (Arthur) Bower-Hansen of Kearney; Patricia E. Sundberg of Aurora and Shery A. Bauman of Friend. Memorials are directed to the American Cancer Society.

Kenneth L. Brondell
Former Hampton resident Kenneth L. Brondell, 82, of Van Nuys, Calif., died Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004 at his home. He was born Oct. 17, 1921 He graduated from Hampton High School in 1939. He was a pitcher for the Hampton baseball team and also the Giants. He worked for the Los Angeles Police Department for 30 years. Survivors include one son, Kenneth Brondell, Jr. and one sister, Marie Brondell Klone Staben

David H. Friesen
David H. Friesen, 91, of Henderson, died Oct. 12, 2004. Funeral services were held Monday Oct. 18 at the Faith Evangelical Bible Church in Henderson with the Rev. Lee Lanzter officiating. Burial was in the Friesen Cemetery in Henderson. Memorials are directed to the family. David H. Friesen, son of Gerhard and Katharina Huebert Friesen was born Apri 6, 1913 in Hamilton County. He lived in the Henderson Community until November of 2000. His daughter Velda and husband Mike cared for him in their home for the last two years. He was a farmer and did some carpenter work after retiring from the farm. He enjoyed making projects from wood. He was baptized by the Rev. John F. Epp and became a member of the Bethesda Mennonite Church in Henderson. He enjoyed serving God in a variety of ways, one being, going with a group of men from the Bethesda Church to help some missionaries that worked with and ministered to the Hopi Nation, to do some special projects. He had a tremendous interest in missions and has supported many missionaries by prayer and finances. He also enjoyed the Hamilton County Crusade for Christ meetings in Aurora and the tent meetings in Henderson every summer. He enjoyed being involved in the ministry of the Grace Children's Home. On Oct. 25, 1933, he married Anna Ott. His wife died Dec. 2, 1975. He married Lena Remple Hiebner in June of 1976. Survivors include daughters, Jo Ann Ruth (Lee) Lantzer of Milan, Mich. and Velda Kay (Mike) Brady of Lincoln; five grandchildren, Joni Leigh Lantzer Oderman of Lewistown, Mont., Angela Faith Lantzer Phelps of Denton, Mont., kelli Marie Lantzer Hofer of Pueblo, Co, Ryan Brady of Sterling and Nathan Brady of Lincoln; 11 great grandchildren; and serveral step grandchildren and step great grandchildren; a sister, Marie Friesen of Henderson, a brother Levi H. Friesen (Elizabeth) of Aurora; a sister-in-law Esther Friesen and brother in law Marvin Siebert, both of Henderson; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Anna of 42 years, wife Lena of 20 years, one brother Rueben H. Friesen, sister Tena Epp, stepson Ronald Hiebner and step granddaughter Shannon Thiesen.

Erma Humrich
Erma Humrich, 81, of Longmont, Colo., died at her residence Oct. 5, 2004. Funeral services were held Thursday, Oct. 8 at the Howe Mortuary Chapel with David Bradshaw officiating. Burial was in the Longmont Mountain View Cemetery. Mrs. Humrich was born Sept. 20, 1923 in Aurora to W.E. Springer and Ella May WHITE Springer. She was raised in Nebraska and graduated from Giltner High School. On May 14, 1942 she married Paul Humrich in South Mills, N.C. while he was serving in the Armed Forces. They returned to Nebraska before moving to Longmont from Fairbury in 1954. Shortly after moving to Longmont, she joined the Columbine Extension Club and remained an active member until very recently due to her health. She enjoyed baking, cooking, sewing and traveling. She was active in her grandchildren's lives. She worked for a number of years for both Bi-Rite Drug and Grants Department Store. She was a member of the LifeBridge Christian Church. Survivors include her daughter Lynda (Joe) Abendschan of Longmont Colo.; a sister Ruth Humrich of Ft. Collins, Colo.; a grandson, Scot (Kimberly) Abendschan of Glendo, Wyo.; a granddaughter Michelle (Chris) Foster of Denver, Colo. and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death were her parents, husband and her daughter Cynthia Ann Humrich. Butch Kolar
Robert (Butch) Ray Kolar, 78, of Aurora died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004, at Hamilton Manor in Aurora. Funeral Services were, Saturday, Oct. 16 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Aurora. Fr. Robert Ray Kolar, son of Fred and Alma (Wanek) Kolar, was born in Exeter, on Aug. 8, 1926. He moved from the Exeter area to Giltner when he was five years old and graduted from Giltner High School. He was the quarterback for the football team and also played baseball while he was in high school. He attended Hastings College for one year before serving in the Army during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge, he returned to the family farm until he retired in 1980. He married Bethel Mary Strotman Oberg on Nov. 15, 1975 at Aurora. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the VFW, the Practical Inventor and was also a poet. Survivors include his wife Bethel of Aurora; two step-sons, Danny Oberg of Doniphan, Jon Oberg of Grand Island; a step-daughter, Jacqueline Harvey of Aurora, seven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two sisters, Dorothy (Joseph) Strotman of Aurora and Marjorie Neal of Lincoln and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, two uncles, Jack Wanek and Raymond Wanek, and a brother-in-law, Charles Neal.

Gwendolyn Longo
Gwendolyn Longo, age 84, died Monday, Oct. 11, 2004, at Hamilton Manor in Aurora. Funeral Services were held Thursday, Oct. 14 at the chapel of Higby-McQuiston Mortuary in Aurora with Pastor Bob Pier officiating. Burial was in Aurora Cemetery. Gwendolyn Mae Longo, daughter of William and Agnes (Toole) Jensen, was born on a farm near Stockham, on May 11, 1920. She attended the Stockham Schools and enjoyed the friendships at her school and Sunday school. As a young woman, she enjoyed visiting her grandfather in Springfield, Mo. After graduating from high school in 1938, She provided childcare for a family in Lincoln for several years. She married Horace Longo in 1945 and lived for a number of years in Philadelphia, Pa., where she had a family. In later years, she resided in nursing homes and especially benefited from the care given to her at the Bethesda Nursing Home, Coleridge Center in Palmer, and most recently at the Aurora Hamilton Manor. Survivors include her three children, William Joseph (Patricia) Longo of Ord, Tracy Lee (Weilai) Longo of Thailand and Diane Kay (John) Gonzalez of Chesapeake, Va., and five grandchildren, William Longo, Jr. of Omaha, Christopher Longo of Cozad, Jeff Gonzalez of Miamiburg, Ohio, Kathleen Garrett of Gerrards Town, W. V, and Suzanne Gonzalez of Orlando, Fla.; and cousins Dona Jo (Bob) Pier of Aurora and Dee (Sande) Traudt of St. Paul, Minn.

Mildred Pedersen
Mildred Pedersen, age 94, of Aurora, died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004, at Memorial Hospital in Aurora. Funeral Services were Friday, Oct. 15 at the chapel of Higby-McQuiston Mortuary in Aurora. Mildred Irene Pedersen, daughter of John and Louise (Satory) Willis, was born in Marquette, on April 5, 1910. She was raised in Hamilton County and attended country school through the eighth grade. She married Goodwin Pedersen on Oct. 1, 1932, at St.Paul. They farmed near Kronborg on the family farm. He died on Feb. 7, 1971. She moved to Aurora in 1990. She was a member of the Aurora Methodist Church. Survivors include her close cousin, Ruby Hilligas of Aurora, several other cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers and two sisters.

Esther Buller
Esther Buller, 83, of Aurora, died Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004 at East Park Villa in Aurora. Memorial services were Tuesday, Nov. 16 at Higby-McQuiston Mortuary chapel. Rev. J. Epp officiated. Buller, daughter of Cornelius and Susanna (Karber) Schroeder, was born Nov. 3, 1921 in Hooker, Okla. She grew up on a farm near Adams, Okla. and attended school through the eighth grade. She earned her high school education by taking correspondence courses. After school, she worked as a housekeeper to several families in the Hooker, Okla. area. She moved to Colorado Springs and continued her housekeeping duties there. She married Alvin Buller April 1, 1945 in Adams, Okla. They farmed in Hamilton County from 1946 to 1979 and continued to live on the farm south of Hampton. They spent the winter months in Pharr, Tex. for over 25 years. Her husband died Nov. 24, 1999. She moved to East Park Villa in 2001 and was one of the first residents there. She enjoyed reading books, knitting and crocheting until her eyes failed her. She enjoyed attended sales with her husband and collected cookie jars, mustard pots, trivets and cut glass. Survivors include her three children, Norma Jean (Michael) Wiebe of Cornith, Tex., Donna (Harvey) Thiessen of Piedmont, S.D. and Paul James (Dianne) Buller of Aurora; three grandsons, Michael and Mark Wiebe and Matthew (Maran) Wiebe; three granddaughters, Angela and Heidi Regier and Karla Buller; one sister, Louise (Irvin) Pauls of Buhler, Kan. and two brothers, David K. (Leona) Schroeder and William K. Schroeder, both of Adams, Okla. and many nieces and nephews.

Christian Gjerloff
Former Marquette resident Christian Gjerloff, 90, of Lincoln, died Sunday, Nov. 14, 2004 at Lancaster Manor in Lincoln. Memorial services will be Thursday, Nov. 18 at 1 p.m. in Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home in Grand Island with Rev. George Wheat officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials are directed to the Lions Club Foundation. Christian Henning Gjerloff, son of Cay and Jennie (Feddersen) Gjerloff, was born Nov. 29, 1913 in Marquette where he grew up and attended District $55 rural school, graduating in 1932. He attended York College from 1932 to 1933. He married Helen E. Cain May 24, 1936. They moved to Grand Island in 1940. He was employed at Lewis Auto and FirestoneTire and Rubber Company and opened a station at 4th and Eddy streets. In 1955, he took over the Conoco bulk plant and worked there for 20 years, retiring in 1975. He attended Trinity Methodist Church, was a member of Ashler Lodge #33 AF&AM, was a 33rd Degree Mason-York Rite, Royal Arch Masons, Knight Templars, Noble of the Mystic Shrine, Masonic Temple Craft committee, Andrew Chapel #41, Order of Eastern Star, Scottish Rite and Tehama Temple Shrine, OE541, Elks Club, Central Nebraska Shrine Club, Grand Island Lions Club, Liederkranz and U.C.T. Survivors include his two daughters, Dorothy 'Dottie' Unterseher of Las Vegas, Nev. and Christy Chartier of Lincoln; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, on June 14, 2003.

Alvin D. Golgert
Alvin D. Golgert, 85, of Hordville, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004 at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City. Graveside services were Saturday, Nov. 13 at the Aurora Cemetery with Rev. Gilbert Larsen officiating. Military rites were performed by Aurora VFW Post 4993. Alvin Donovan Golgert was born June 17, 1919 in Juniata to William and Amilia (Vilmar) Golgert. He graduated from Trumbull High School in 1938. He entered the U.S. Army in 1941 and served in the Pacific until his honorable discharge in 1945. He married Berdena Andersen June 21, 1950 in Grand Island. They lived in rural Hamilton County before moving to the family farm south of Hordville in the early 1960s. He farmed and continued to live on the home place. He loved his family, his farm and raising livestock. He was a member of the American Legion Post #6 in Central City and VFW Post #4993 in Aurora. Survivors include his son, Robin (Vanessa) Golgert of Central City; his daughter, Emilia Golgert of Hordville; two grandchildren, Eronne and Nolan Golgert, both of Central City. He was preceded in death by his wife, Berdena on March 12, 2002; one brother, Wayne; four sisters, Verna Robb, LaVonne Terrell, Laura Treat and Beulah Underwood.

Jessica Lynn Logue
Jessica Lynn Logue, infant daughter of Darren and Carmen Logue of Aurora, was born at rest Nov. 9, 2004 at Mary Lanning Hospital in Hastings. Dale Oswald
Dale Oswald, 83, of Aurora, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004 at his home in Aurora. Memorial services were Saturday, Nov. 13 at the Pleasant View Bible Church in Aurora with Rev. Phil Oswald officiating. Dale Oswald, son of Theodore R. and Vesta (Adams) Oswald, was born May 5, 1921 in Aurora. He attended elementary school at District #64. He graduated from Aurora High School in 1939. During his high school years he enjoyed math and the sciences, playing football and music programs. After graduation, he farmed with his father until Oct. 8, 1942 when he was inducted into the Army Medical Corps. He was stationed at Camp Barkley outside Abilene, Tex. He attended clerk school and was accepted into the Camp Glee Club. He was stationed at a number of different Army instillations, ending up at Camp Beale, Calif. where he assisted in setting up a separation center. While stationed at Camp Barkley, he married Marian Rath on June 19, 1943. She spent time with him at the different camps. He was honorable discharged from the Army in January 1945 after serving three and one-half years. They returned to the farm west of Aurora where they lived until 1987. He was active at Pleasant View Bible Church all of his life, singing in the choir, teaching Sunday school and serving on the church board and deacon board for some 30 years. He sang in a quartet with three friends at many functions and later sang with three of his sons. He served on a number of boards, including the Aurora School Board. He enjoyed teaching Bible studies. Survivors include his wife, Marian of Aurora; seven children, Randy (Annie) Oswald of Omaha, William (Ann) Oswald of Aurora, Steve (Christine) Oswald of Aurora, Colo., Rebecca (Don) Luie of Apple Valley, Calif., Philip (LeeAnn) Oswald of Elk Grove, Calif., Sandra (James) Leake of Venice, Fla. and Jay D. (Linda) Oswald of Aurora; 20 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and many friends. He was preceded in death bh his parents; a sister who died in infancy; a brother, Estel who died at age 13; three grandchildren, Amron, Leah and Jodi, children of Jay and Linda Oswald.

Sarah Safarik
Seraphia F. 'Sarah' Safarik, 93, of Aurora, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004 at Memorial Community Care in Aurora. Services were Saturday, Nov. 13 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Elba. Rev. Ray Kosmicki and Rev. Craig Doty officiated. Burial was in St. Wenceslaus Cemetery near St. Paul. Mrs. Safarik was born Sept. 17, 1911 at Farwell to Louie and Catherine (Tyma) Pilakowski. She grew up in the Ashton area and attended St. Francis Parochial School. She married John M. Safarik Feb. 1, 1932 in Ashton. They farmed in the Dannevirke, Cotesfield and Elba areas. In 1952 they moved to Elba. She moved to Aurora in September of 1999 and moved to Memorial Community Care in June of this year. She loved baking, gardening, playing bingo, casin trips and quilting, having made quilts for each of her children and grandchildren. She had a great sense of humor and was always optimistic about life and cherished her grandchildren. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Aurora and was a longtime member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and Council of Catholic Women in Elba. Survivors include two sons, Donald (Carol) Safarik of Orange, Calif. and John (Alice) Safarik, Jr. of Arvada, Colo.; five daughters, Margie (Allen) Dunn of Kansas City, Mo., Phyllis (LaVern) Mroczek of Loup City, Arlene (Tom) Newlun of Aurora, Carol (Franz) Trumler of Boelus and Jeanette (Paul) Roberts of Kansas City, Mo.; 32 grandchildren, 75 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; one great-grandson, Peyton Newlun; nine brothers, Steve, John, Louie, Joe, Tony, Vince and Alfred Pilakowski; two infant brothers; three sisters, Anna Mitera, Victoria Justus and Agnes Pilakowski. Memorials are directed to St. Mary's Church, St. Joseph's Church or the family's choice.
