There will be a vigil at 7:00 pm Thursday at McKown Funeral Home in Columbus. Visitation will continue from 9:00 am until service time Friday at the church in Duncan. Burial will be at St. Bonaventure Cemetery in Columbus. Dottie Hahn was born March 5, 1927 on a farm near Brainard, NE to Theodore and Lillian (Sypal) Svoboda. She attended Dwight Assumption Catholic School. On October 11, 1948, Dottie married Carroll J. Hahn at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Brainard. She was a homemaker on her and her husbands farm near Columbus. She enjoyed dancing, gardening, and cooking. She was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Duncan. Dottie is survived by:

She graduated from St. Bonaventure High School in 1964 and attended Norfolk Jr. College and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She moved to San Francisco, California & worked there until moving to Hasting, Nebraska in 1988. She spent most of her time doing volunteer work. Judy loved the art & nature & was an avid painter.

John Robert "J.R." Curry, age 17, of Columbus died Saturday; February 17, 2001 as a result of an auto accident near Columbus, Nebraska. Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 20, 2001 at the First United Methodist Church in Columbus. The Rev. Don Wilson will officiate. Burial will be in the Columbus Cemetery. Visitation will be held Monday 4-8 p.m. at the McKown Funeral Home in Columbus and Tuesday 10:00 until service time at the church. J.R. was born February 17, 1984 in Columbus, Nebraska to John & Debbie (Andrews) Curry. J.R. received his early education at North Park Elementary , Columbus Middle School and Immanuel Lutheran School. He attended Mt. Michael Prep School and was currently a junior at the Columbus High School. He was a member of Federated Church. J.R. was involved in many activities. He was a member of The Flight Club Soccer Team since 1993. He also played on the Columbus High School soccer team and ran cross country. He was currently a member fo the Columbus swim team. During the summer J.R. had worked at the Columbus Aquatic Center as a life guard and as a private swimming instructor. For several summers he worked during the detasseling season. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and trips to the family cabin.

Joshua, a sophomore at Columbus Scotus, was involved in Campus Ministry & Club Basketball. He enjoyed 4-wheeling, stock car racing, water sports, football and music. Peter Stanley Volnek, age 77, of Columbus, died Thursday; February 15, 2001at the Columbus Community Hospital. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday February 19, 2001 at The St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Columbus, Nebraska. Fr. Dan Keller will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Bonaventure Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday after 4:00 p.m. at the McKown Funeral Home. A Vigil will be held Sunday evening at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Visitation will continue Monday morning from 8:00 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Peter Stanley Volnek was born June 6, 1923 in Greeley County, Ne. to Andrew,Sr. and Clara (Niedbalski) Volnek. As a boy he lived on a farm near Cedar Rapids, Nebraska and attended school in Greeley and Boone County. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII from 1943-1945. He married Phyllis Nowak on February 4, 1947 at Fullerton, Nebraska. Pete farmed near Fullerton for several years and then moved to Columbus where he was a mechanic at Columbus Oil, and Northside Motors. He drove a truck for Behlen Manufacturing for 30 years. He also owned and operated the Village Inn Cafe in Richland from 1968 until May of 1995 when he retired. The last 2 years he worked part time for Behlen Manufacturing. He was a member of St. Bonaventure Catholic Church, Hartman Post #84 American Legion, and the Eagles Club. Burial in St. Bonaventure Cemetery with military honors by Hartman Post #84 American Legion Honor Guard Peter is survived by:

He moved to Columbus as a small child and then back to Chicago where he graduated from high school. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the European Theater from 1944-1946. Following his discharge Ray settled in Columbus. He married Donna Snyder on September 6, 1952 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in rural Bellwood, Nebraska. He worked for the John Deere Dealership for 33 years and then for Columbus Irrigation for 15 years. Ray was a member of the V.F.W. #3704, St. Isidore Catholic Church, Holy Name Society & was involved in other church functions. He is survived by:

Ronald "Blackie" Meyers
Ronald "Blackie" Meyers, age 68 of Columbus, died Sunday February 4, 2001 at the Columbus Community Hospital. Funeral services will be held 10:30 am Wednesday at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Columbus with Fr. Christopher Grimmond officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday after 3:00 pm at McKown Funeral Home with a 7:00 pm vigil. Visitation will continue Wednesday 8:00 am until 10:00 am at the funeral home. Ronald was born May 26, 1932 in Minot, North Dakota to Lonnie & Edith (Haines) Meyers. He received his education at Lincoln High School. He was married at St. Mary's Catherdral in Lincoln on February 27, 1954 to Patricia Witkowski. He worked various construction jobs in Lincoln. He was instrumental in starting Capital City Bowhunters in Lincoln. He moved to Columbus in 1967 to work with Johansen Construction. He later started Meyers Construction. Along with the construction work he also operated a golf driving range on the east side of Columbus for a time. Following his retirement from construction he worked doing parking lot stripping and operated his food vending operation "Time To Eat" serving various community and athletic events. He was a very active member of the Columbus Optimists Club where he held numerous offices and positions including Lieutenant Governor and Club President. He was a volunteer with the American Heart Association receiving the Volunteer of the Year Award. He was involved with youth athletics including area baseball leagues. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed fishing, archery, deer hunting, bowling and gardening. He was the previous State Archery Record Holder in the white tail deer & buffalo carp categories. Edwin A. Bender, 92, of Columbus died Monday, January 15, 2001 at the Columbus Manor. Services were 10:30am Thursday, January 18, 2001 at the St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Columbus with Fr. Dan Keller officiating. Burial was in the St. Bonaventure Catholic Cemetery with military honors by Hartman Post #84 American Legion Honor Guard. Mr. Bender was born October 23, 1908 in Cornlea to Henry and Margaret (Rossbach) Bender. He received his eduation at Sacred Heart Parochial School in Cornlea. He married Lucille M. Fischer on January 25, 1943 in North Carolina. He worked on the family farm farm before serving in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 - 1943. Following his military service he returned to work on the family farm. The couple also owned a gas station and bar in Cornlea. In 1966, they moved to Columbus where he worked at Dale Electronics for 6 1/2 years. He was a member of Hartman Post #84 American Legion, V.F.W. Post #3704, Eagles Club, and St. Bonaventure Church. Edwin was an avid card player and fisherman.

Harold William Stueck
Harold William Stueck, age 77 of Columbus died January 22, 2001 at the Columbus Manor. Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 25, 2001 at the First United Methodist Church in Columbus. The Rev. Gary Main will officiate. Graveside services will be held at 2:30 pm Thursday at Pleasant Dale cemetery with military honors by American Legion Post # 354 and representatives from the US Marine Corp. Visitation will be Wednesday from 3-8 pm at McKown Funeral Home and Thursday from 9:30 am until service time at the church. Harold was born March 11, 1923 in Pleasant Dale, Nebraska to William & Vera (Kennedy) Stueck. He graduated from Pleasant Dale High School in 1939. He received his Bachelors Degree in 1953 from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He was a sergeant in the US Marine Corps during WWII and the Korean Conflict. Harold moved to Columbus in 1961. He worked in design and mechanical engineering. In Columbus he worked for Dale Electronics and Fleischer Mfg. He retired in 1982. He also taught trade school in Milford, Nebraska. He belonged to the First United Methodist Church, Life member of the VFW Post #131 in Lincoln. Past member of St. Marks Methodist Church in Lincoln where he served as treasurer. He also served on the administration board for both churches for several terms. He was a member of the Eagles Club, Hartman Post #84 American Legion in Columbus and was a founding member of the Pleasant Dale American Legion Post #354, AARP and Engineers Club in Lincoln. He enjoyed building model trains, was an avid gardener and nature watcher.

Services were 10:30am Friday, January 19, 2001 at the Rosehill Evangelical Free Church in Newman Grove, Ne. with Reverend Clifford Branson officiating. Burial was in the Rosehill Cemetery in Newman Grove with military honors by American Legion Post #73. Mr. Lyon was born August 11, 1918, in Newman Grove to Fred and Sophia (Erickson) Lyon. He received his education at Newman Grove High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He was in the 780th Amph Tank Battalion from October 1941 - November 1945. He married Anna Mae Wallin on November 23, 1946 in Marysville, Kansas. He founded Lyon Transfer Co. in 1935. The couple lived in Newman Grove until moving to Columbus in 1950. Royal was a member of the Hartman Post #84 American Legion, V.F.W. Post #3704, and a member of the Church in Newman Grove.

Interment will be in Roselawn Memorial Cemetery in Columbus. Alma H. Hasselbalch was born November 29, 1907 in Cordova, NE to Otto and Ida (Fillinger) Hasselbalch. Alma graduated from Kramer High School in Columbus. She lived in North Platte and then Columbus. She worked as a cashier for JC Penney for 23 years, and as the Platte County Selective Service Officer for 15 years. After her retirement, Alma worked as a volunteer and operated the Hospital gift shop for 20 years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Columbus, member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of the Hospital Auxiliary. Alma is survived by 3 nieces; Colleen Willman and Mary Goc both of Columbus, and Christine Carr of Sheboygan, WI, and one brother-in-law; Carl Spidle of Blair, NE. David worked for Island Supply Welding, Leffers Electric, Dick's Electric in Blair and was currently working for Marley's Electric in Columbus. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, classic cars and Jimmy Buffet music. He was a loving father and enjoyed spending time with his family.

Rod Kneifl officiating. Burial will be in the St. Patrick/Joseph Cemetery located in rural Platte Center with military honors by American Legion Parry Post 283. Visitation will be Thursday 3-5 pm at McKown Funeral Home in Columbus and after 6:00 pm at the church. A Vigil will be held at 7:30 pm at the Church. Donald E. Jaixen was born December 4, 1927 in Rural Platte County to John & Eulalia (Mark) Jaixen. He attended St. Anthony Grade School in rural Platte County and graduated from Platte Center High School in 1945. He married Delores Bolton on November 17, 1956 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Platte Center. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from July 26, 1951 until his discharge on June 6, 1953. He farmed in rural Platte County and was a rural mail carrier for 36 years until his retirement November 30th, 1990. Don was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Platte Center where he served as an usher. He was past president of District #84 School Board and served as chairman on the Shell Creek Township Board. Don was past Commander & Adjutant of the American Legion Parry Post #283 where he was a life member. He was a member of the Rural Letter Carriers Association, and was the grader operator for Shell Creek Township. He was a member of several card clubs and enjoyed taking care of his yard.

Julia Luebbers was born September 19, 1916 in Plainview, NE to Andrew and Johanna (Hutfless) Book. She graduated from high school in Bonesteel, SD. On September 19, 1940 she married George A. Luebbers in Osmond. She lived in Osmond where she worked as a nurse's aide for 30 years at the Osmond Community Hospital before moving to Columbus in 1996. She was a member of St. Mary's Church in Osmond, St. Mary's Guild, and Christian Mothers. Julia was also the co-founder of the Senior Citizens Center in Osmond.

Funeral Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday July 30, 2001 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Tarnov, Ne. with Reverend Rod Kneifl officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery in Tarnov, Ne. Visitation is after 4:00 p.m. Sunday with a 7:00 p.m. Vigil Service at McKown Funeral Home in Columbus. Visitation continues on Monday from 9:30 a.m. until service time at the church in Tarnov. Louis Barnas was born April 29, 1920 in Tarnov, Nebraska to Stanley and Sophia (Syslo) Barnas. He attended St. Michael's School in Tarnov. Louis farmed in the Tarnov area and drove truck for Central Sand and Gravel until retiring. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Tarnov.

Larry A. Jarecke
Larry A. Jarecke, 65, of Columbus died Saturday, July 21 at Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha. Funeral services are 10:00 am Wednesday, July 25 at St. Isidore Catholic Church in Columbus with the Rev. Joseph A. Miksch officiating. Visitation will be on Tuesday at McKown Funeral Home from 3:00-8:00 pm with a Vigil service to be held at 7:00 pm. Visitation will continue on Wednesday from 8-9:30 am at McKown Funeral Home. Burial will be at All Saints Cemetery in Columbus with Military Honors by Hartman Post #84 American Legion Honor Guard. Larry was born in Fullerton, Nebraska to Harry & Minnie (Stopak) Jarecke on September 8, 1935. He graduated from Fullerton High School in 1953. He served in the US Army during the Korean War. He married Jane Shanahan on April 27, 1963 in Dubuque, Iowa. He worked for GTE for 36 years in various communities in Iowa and Nebraska. He has lived in Columbus since 1973. Larry retired in 1994. He was a member of St. Isidore Catholic Church and Holy Name Society. He was a member of The Knights of Columbus Council #938 where he served as the Grand Knight. He was also a member of the Eagles Club and the VFW Post #3704 in Columbus. Larry continued to work part time at the Columbian Village. Larry enjoyed spending time with his family. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and woodworking.

Minnie L. Janssen, age 89, of Columbus died Monday; July 9, 2001 at the Columbus Manor. Funeral services will be Friday 10:00 am at St. Lukes Congregational Church UCC. The Rev. Nancy Peebles will officiate. Visitation will be Thursday 4-8 pm at the McKown Funeral Home. Visitation will continue Friday morning, 9:00 am until service time at the church. Burial will be in the Roselawn Memorial Cemetery in Columbus, Nebraska. Minnie was born June 10, 1912 in Platte Center to Harry and Elsena (Husmann) Kamm. She grew up in Platte Center. On October 20, 1930 she married August Janssen. She resided in Platte Center and Columbus throughout her life. In 1954 she moved into Columbus where she has lived since. She worked many years at Gloor Bakery. She was a member of St. Luke's Congregational Church UCC in Columbus and the Rhoda Circle. Minnie is survived by her children and grandchildren:

Ross Gerber
Ross Edward Gerber, age 85, of Columbus, Nebraska formerly of Nebraska City, Nebraska died Saturday July 14, 2001 at the Columbus Manor in Columbus. Memorial Services are 2:00 p.m. Wednesday July 18, 2001 at the McKown Funeral Chapel in Columbus with Reverend Gary Main officiating. Burial will be in the Mount Vernon Cemetery in Peru, Nebraska. Family will receive friends on Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. until servicetime at McKown Funeral Home. Ross Edward Gerber was born May 1, 1916 in Nebraska City, Nebraska to Edward and Bertha (Ross) Gerber. He graduated from Nebraska City High School in 1935. In 1939 he was united in marriage to Roberta Cowell in Fremont, Nebraska. He served in the U.S. Marines during World War II. Ross was a Contractor and co-owner of Colbert & Gerber Construction in Nebraska City for 35 years until retiring and moving to San Benito, Texas. The couple lived there for 15 years until moving to Columbus in 1994. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, the V.F.W., the American Legion, and the 40 & 8 Club in Nebraska City. Ross enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling. He is survived by:

Burial will be in All Saints Catholic Cemetery with Military Honors by Hartman Post # 84 American Legion Honor Guard Alexender Olsan was born September 25, 1930 in Nance County, Nebraska to John and Anna (Boro-Zegar) Olsan. He grew up in the Nance & Merrick County area where he received his education. On November 21, 1951 Alex married Clara Chochon at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Tarnov, Nebraska. He farmed before entering the military where he served in Germany during the Korean War. Alex played the clarinet with the military band. Following the war the couple moved to Columbus & then to California for a short time before returning to farming in the Clarks area. They moved back to Columbus in 1975 where he owned & operated Al's Lawn Service until retiring in 1999. Alex played the piano accordian & clarinet. He enjoyed hunting, fishing & playing cards. He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and was past member of the Eagles Club, V.F.W. #3704 & Hartman Post #84 American Legion. Alta L. "Lee" Titman, 82, of Columbus died Monday June 18, 2001 at Genoa Long Term Care. Funeral services are 10:30 am Thursday June 21 at the First United Methodist Church in Columbus with the Rev. Gary Main officiating. The graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm Thursday at the Aurora Cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday at McKown Funeral Home from 4-8 pm and on Thursday from 9:30 am until service time at the Church. Alta Titman was born September 19, 1918 to Lester J. and Frances M. (Johnson) Caulkins on the farm in Aurora, NE. She grew up in Aurora and attended rural schools where she graduated in 1936, where she was valedictorian of her class. She was awarded a 2 year scholarship at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where she majored in Latin. She taught 2 years at a rural school in Hamilton County. She then worked 4 years for a laywer named Adams in Aurora. She married Leonard Titman on November 19, 1943 in Colorado. Following her husbands time in the service, she moved to Hastings where she worked in a State office. She then moved to Columbus in 1956. Worked for R.W. Beck & Associates for 25 years, (21 years in Columbus and 4 years in Minneapolis). In 1981 she retired and returned to Columbus. She was a member of the Prairie Gem Church in Aurora and was a 46 year member of the First United Methodist Church in Columbus. She was also a 50 year member of the Order of Eastern Star. She loved to play bingo and watch the Huskers.

Barbara Ann was born April 18, 1972 in Columbus to Darwin & Bernadette (Turek) Jaster. She was a 1990 Graduate of Columbus High School and a 1994 Graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Business where she had also worked. She married Scott James Malone on August 26, 1994 at St. Isidore Church in Columbus. She was a resident of Omaha where she was employed as a Retail Banker with Commercial Federal. She enjoyed collecting TY Beanies, bingo, traveling, and the Huskers. Barbara was also nominated for the Spirit Award for the Omaha Relay for Life Cancer Walk.

Chris worked for Cummins Tools where he enjoyed traveling and selling at conventions and home expos.
