Kenneth J. Rohde

Former Homer resident

Kenneth J. “Ken” Rohde, 86, of Loveland, Colo., died January 31, 2005 at a Hospice Care Center.

Services were Thursday, Feb. 3 at King of Glory Lutheran Church with Rev. Dick Kling officiating. There was a private burial at Loveland Burial Park.

Ken was born June 8, 1918 in Sioux City, Iowa to William and Martha (Krabbenhoft) Rohde. He graduated from Homer High School in Homer, Neb. in 1936. Ken attended Ag College in Lincoln, Neb. for two years. He married Helen E. Miller in Omaha, Neb. He was a farmer for 22 years in northeast Nebraska and a loan inspector for 20 years before retiring in 1982. He moved to Loveland, Colo. in 1988 from Dakota City.

Ken was a past Mater Omadi at the #5 Masonic Lodge and was a member for 51 years. He was a past patron of O.E.S. Dakota City and an active member of the Abu-Bekr Shrine Foot Patrol. He was a board member of the Cornhusker Shrine Club and a 42-year member of Salem Lutheran Church. Ken was also a member of the Sioux City Consistory Scottish Rite, the Abu-Bekr Shrine Temple and a board member and treasurer of the Loveland Shrine Club. He was a member of the Golden K Loveland Kiwanis and King of Glory Lutheran Church. He was on De Molay Board of Directors and Rainbow Girls Dad Building Director. Ken was also active in many positions are the churches he was a member.

Survivors include his wife, Helen E. Rohde of Loveland, Colo.; two sons: Allen and Mary Rohde of Loveland, Colo., Steven and Janet Rohde of Brush, Colo. One brother, William Rohde of Homer, Neb. and one sister Dorothy Beerman of South Sioux City, six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one brother.

Memorials can be directed to Hospice of Larimer County or the Shriners Children’s Hospital in care of Viegut Funeral Home, 1440 N. Boise Ave., Loveland, Colo. 80538.

John Francis Redel

Wayne resident

John Francis Redel, 83, died at Providence Medial Center in Wayne, Neb. on Feb. 3, 2005. Services were at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Wayne with the Rev. William Koeber officiating on Tuesday.

John Francis Redel, son of Henry and Anna (Stratman) Redel, was born Dec. 18, 1921 on a farm near Earling, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Winside. He attended school in Dodge and Howells. John was then employed by Wayne County at Winside. He later was a police officer, worked for the City of Wayne, Region IV, was a janitor at Wayne-Carroll Public Schools, and served as a handyman for many people in the area.

John was united in marriage to Delores Meyer on Feb. 2, 1940 at Winside. She passed away in 1970. He married Janet Franzen in 1972. She passed away in 1978. John was united in marriage to Dorothy Reed on July 18, 1979 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Wayne. The couple made their home in Wayne. In 1982 John and Dorothy started their own business J & D Pancake Catering. John is a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Wayne. He enjoyed visiting with friends and family.

John is survived by his wife, Dorothy; three sons and four daughters-in-law, Stanley “Butch” and JoAnn Redel of Omaha, Gary and Linda Redel of Bennington, Larry and Kathy Redel of Columbus and Gail Redel of Bennington; one daughter and son-in-law, Leila and Darrell Brasch of Omaha, nine grandchildren, several great grandchildren, step-granchildren, Lester Field of Norfolk, Bonnie and Harvey Mohlfeld of Wayne, Bill Woehler, Robert and Mary Woehler, Nina Reed-Spangler and Dennis Spangler, all of Wayne; 18 step-grandchildren, several step-great grandchildren, two sisters and brothers-in-law, Connie and Sam Vergata of Omaha and Dee and John Lurch of Arizona, nieces and nephews.

John Redel was preceded in death by his parents, two wives, one son, one brother, one sister and one stepmother.

Memorials may be directed to Our Savior Lutheran Church and Providence Medical Center in Wayne.

Henry Brinkman

Pender resident

Henry Brinkman, 93, of Pender, formerly of Emerson, Neb. died Saturday, January 22, 2005 at Heritage of Emerson Nursing Home in Emerson.

Funeral services were Monday, January 24, 2005 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Emerson, Rev. Gretchen Ritola officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Emerson.

Henry was born September 11, 1911 in Wayne County the son of Adolph and Emelie (Wieland) Brinkman. He was baptized September 30, 1911. Henry was confirmed March 29, 1925 at Evan Lutheran Church in Wayne.

Henry married Frances Thomsen at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wakefield on September 9, 1936. The couple farmed southwest of Wayne until 1952 when they moved to a farm southwest of Emerson and after retiring moved into Pender. Frances died January 23, 2001.Henry became a resident of Heritage of Emerson in July of 2003.

Survivors include two children and their spouses, Ron and Carol Brinkman of Pender, Elaine and Rod Larson of Emerson. Grandchildren, Barb and her husband Larry Nitz of Lincoln, Steve and his wife Marcie Larson of Columbus, Brad and his wife Stephanie of Pender, Rhonda and her husband Bary Habrock of Elkhorn, NE. Also surviving are 13 great grandchildren, and one sister Lydia Thomsen of Wayne.

Henry was preceded in death by his parents, wife and two sisters.

Evelyn H. Rice

SSC resident

Evelyn H. Rice, 83, of South Sioux City, formerly of Sioux City, Iowa, died Wednesday, January 26 at a Sioux City Hospital following a brief illness.

Memorial services were Saturday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with Rev. Daniel Anderson, associate pastor of Wesley United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Walthill, Neb. later this summer.

Evelyn H. Rice was born December 8, 1921 in Winnebago to Joseph D. and Hazel C. (Lucart) Wilcox. She married Sgt. John R. Rice Valentine’s Day, 1945. He died September 6, 1950 while serving with the United States Army near the village of Tabu-Dong, Korea.

A hero to her family and friends, Evelyn was an independent woman of strong moral values and great courage. Her efforts to challenge ethnic discrimination of the 1950’s resulted in three appearances at the United States Supreme Court. She was generous and concerned for the well being of others and her home was a gathering place for great friends, food and family.

She is survived by two daughters, Pam (Gary) Goodwin of Westminster, Colo., and Jean (Harold) LaMere of South Sioux City, a son Timothy (Kathie) Rice of Omaha, a brother Wallace (Beverly) Wilcox, a sister Thelma Rice, ten grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John Rice, a brother, Harold Wilcox and a sister, Vivian Dains.

Honorary pallbearers will be her great grandsons, Scott, John and Russ Goodwin, Mike and Chris Lambertsen, David LaChapelle, T.J. Rice and Dan LaMere.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland.

Jack Wente

Former Newcastle resident

Jack Wente, 74, passed away Sunday, January 23, 2005 at Veteran’s Hospital, Cameron, Mo. after a long illness.

Service and burial will be at a later date at Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis, Mo.

Jack retired from the navy after 25 years with the rank of Chief Petty oOficer.

Jack was born in Newcastle, Neb., the son of Charles and Ella (Caleman) Wente on June 6, 1930.

Survivors are his children, Sandra, Robin and Sean, five brothers and three sisters: Charles of Portland, Oregon, Tom and Bill of Sioux City, Iowa, Harold of Emmetsburg, Iowa, Robert (Butch) of Springfield, Ill., Mary Jo Onnen of Denver, Colo., Jeanne Norfolk of Manhattan Beach, Cali. and Carol Hasssenger of Scotsdale, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Tony and a sister Helen Curry.

Cora S. Burgess

SSC resident

Cora S. Burgess, 93, of South Sioux City, passed away Monday, January 31, 2005 at her residence at Regency Square in South Sioux City.

Services were Wednesday at the First Lutheran Church with the Rev. James Kruse officiating. Burial was in Floyd Cemetery, Sioux City, Iowa.

Cora was born March 15, 1911, in Vinje, Winnebago County, Iowa, the daughter of Morgan O. and Caroline (Gaaserud) Olson. She graduated from Waldorf Academy in Forest City, Iowa. She married Maris D. “Hap” Burgess, February 24, 1940 in Marshalltown, Iowa. He died January 9, 1993 in South Sioux City.

She was a member of the First Lutheran Church, the church choir, Church Circle II of the E.L.C.A. and taught Sunday School. She was a member of P.E.O. Chapter D.E., a former member of the Waldorf Choir, the P.T.A. in South Sioux City, Sioux City, a former Scout Leader and “The Piecemakers” Quilting Group.

Survivors include two sons and their wives: John and Denise of Rancho Senta Margarita, Cali., Lyman and Brenda of West Bloomfield, Mich.; two daughters: Karen Burgess-Kohn and her husband Larry Kohn of Lakewood, Colo., Mary and David Heck of Homer, Neb.; nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and a son Eric Morgan Burgess.

Pallbearers were David Heck, Roger Heck, Wm. B. Rohde, Larry Kohn, Josh and Cameron Burgess and Loy Todd.

Memorials in her name may be directed to the Regency Square Memorial Fund.

Alan L. Stout

Winnebago, Nebraska

Alan L. Stout, 55, of rural Winnebago, Neb. died on Friday, Jan. 14, 2005 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa. Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, Jan. 18, at the Ho-Chunk Community Center in Winnebago. Interment was in the Omaha Valley Cemetery in Homer, Neb.

Alan was born on November 19, 1949 in Sioux City, Iowa to Homer and Gladys (Morgan) Stout. He graduated from high school in Winnebago and attended one year at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, where he was a member of the Farmhouse Fraternity. He farmed all of his life, raised buffalo, and liked to hunt. He was also a devoted Husker and Yankee Fan.

Alan is survived by his sons: Jay Stout and his wife Dawn, Michael Stout and his wife Lisa, and Brandon Stout, all of Winnebago, and Mark Stout and his wife Michelle of McCook Lake, S. Dakota, as well as brothers Don Stout of Huntington Beach, CA, Gene Stout and his wife Helen of South Sioux City, and a sister, Judy Liebbrandt and her husband Verne of Madison, Wis. He is also survived by eight grandchildren: Aleisa, Jenaya, Tessa, Crystal, Jarren, Jessica, Chloe, and Madeline.

Alan was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Gladys Stout.

Joseph Robert Chaney

Pender, Nebraska

Joseph Robert Chaney, 81 of Pender, Neb. died on Friday, January 21, 2005 in Omaha, Nebraska. Funeral services were Tuesday at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Pender with Rev. Norman Nelson officiating. Interment was in the Rosehill Cemetery in Pender.

Joseph (Bob) was born on the 15th of January, 1924 at Buis Memorial Hospital to Wilber and Dorthy (Mason) Chaney. He was raised on a

farm north of Pender. During the depression he worked for Hesse at the Creamery, graduating from Pender High School in 1941. After graduation he joined a thrashing crew, traveling the Midwest. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1942, as was assigned to the Third Corps Motor Transport Battalion, Amphibious Corps. During WWII he was stationed in the Pacific Theater, being discharged in 1946. Upon his return to Nebraska, he worked for Harckert House as a fry cook, later working up to manager. He then went to work for Omaha Steel. He married Viola Ruth Windhorst and they were married on March 12, 1947. In 1953 he moved his family to Pender to operate the Sportsman’s Tavern with Bob’s father. Later he purchased the old Demme mortuary building and turned it into Bob’s Bar, later selling it to Karl Vollers. Bob was an entrepreneur who initiated several enterprises including: Busch and Chaney Electric, National C Mfg in Thurston, and Logan Valley Sales in Pender. From his office in the old Pender Depot, he started a mail order business for ornamental Windmills, later adding pickup racks. In 1971 he met Joyce McGuire who became his significant other for the next 30 years. Bob helped raise Joyce’s daughter Lana and nurtured Lana’s son Chad. He was a past post commander of the Pender American Legion, and was active in the VFW.

Bob is survived by children: Linda Campbell and her husband John Reynolds of Omaha; Lon Chaney and his wife Judy of Pender, grandchildren: Heather Campbell-Heath and her husband Roger of Walthill, Britt Campbell of Omaha; as well as great grandchildren, Aisha, Ethan, Arielle Campbell. He is also survived by one brother, Wilbur (Sonny) Chaney, and his wife Marlene of Omaha, and brother-in-law Bud Darden also of Omaha.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Dorothy, and a sister, Mary Lou Darden.

Harriett B. Bentjen

Former Pender resident

Harriett B. Bentjen, 86, of Elk Point, S.D., died on Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2005 at the Prairie Estates Care Home in Elk Point.

Funeral Services were Tuesday, Feb. 22 at the United Parish Church, in Elk Point, S.D., with the Rev. David Bambas officiating. Interment was in the Rosehill Cemetery in Pender.

Harriett was born on July 29, 1918 in Laurel, Neb., the daughter of Milt and Alta (Cleveland) Leinart. She married Elmer Bentjen on October 29, 1939 in Pender, Neb.. The couple lived in Pender, Elk Point, California and West Point, Neb.. They then moved to Walthill, Neb. until 1995, when they moved to Pender. Harriett retired from the Walthill School after 23-years, where she was employed as the Kitchen Supervisor. She moved to Elk Point in April of 1999. She was a member of the United Parish in Elk Point. She enjoyed traveling, her many friends, and playing cards, her “Crazy Hat Club”, and weekly get-togethers at the Legion.

Harriett is survived by three daughters: Sandee Mahin and her husband Al of Elk Point, S.D.; Bonnie Berg and friend, Russ Morgan, of Winnebago, Neb.; and Jamie Bentjen and friend, Kevin Person of Hastings, Minn., as well as four grandchildren: Scott and Bryan Mahin, Lance Corporal Drey Bentjen; and Beth Boyd, as well as four great grandchildren and extended grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers: Willis Leinart of Macy, Neb.; and Vere Leinart of Omaha.

She was prededed in death by her parents, her husband Elmer, a son Clark, and a brother Cecil Leinert.
