Dorothy J. Casey

Emerson resident

Dorothy J. Casey, 78, of Emerson, Neb. died on February 18, 2005 at the Pender Community Hospital in Pender, Neb.

Funeral services were Tuesday, Feb. 22, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Emerson, with Fr. Michael Malloy officiating. Interment was in the Calvary Cemetery in Emerson.

Dorothy was born, the fourth of seven children, on June 21, 1926 in Thurston, Neb., the daughter of Huey and Doris Duncan. She grew up on a farm east of Thurston, attending country school through the eighth grade, and graduating from Thurston High School in 1943. She enrolled at Wayne State College during her last semester of high school, and began four years of teaching in rural schools of Thurston County the next fall.

She married Eugene Casey at St. John’s Catholic Church in Pender on May 21, 1947. The couple farmed east of Emerson until Gene’s death in 1969. She worked as a baker in the Emerson Schools from 1972 to 1995. She enjoyed retirement with family, travel with friends, and card playing with the Grammies Club.

Dorothy is survived by her seven children: Carol Watchorn, and her husband Dave of Ponca, Neb.; Mike Casey and his wife Jodie of Gunnison, Colo.; Mark Casey and his wife Nancy of Emerson; Kathy Uhrich and her husband Don of Wood River, Neb.; Patty Meierdierks and her husband Bob of Moab, Utah; Ed Casey and his wife Jenn of Omaha; and Mary Beth Casey and Anita Eikens of Milwaukee, Wis., as well as 13 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She is also survived by three brothers: Kennith LeRoy Duncan, and his wife Ruby of Thurston, Neb.; Marvin Duncan and his wife LaVern of Hubbard, Neb.; and Glen Duncan and his wife Doris of Thurston, Neb.; two sisters: Georgia Duncan of Tilden, Neb.; and Joyce Blair of Homer, Neb. as well as many nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Gene, and a son, Joel.

Bonnie M. Curry

SSC resident

Bonnie M. (Smith) Curry, 80, of South Sioux City died Monday, Feb. 21, 2005, at a South Sioux City nursing home following a lengthy illness brought on from a stroke in 1993.

Serviceswere Friday at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home, with the Rev. Clyde Pritchett and Eldon Erickson officiating. Burial was in Dakota City Cemetery.

Mrs. Curry was born June 21, 1924, in Sioux City, the daughter of William J. and Bertha A. (McElwaine) Smith. She married Leland T. Curry on Sept. 27, 1947, in Moville, Iowa. He died June 13, 1985, in South Sioux City.

She was a member of the Evangelical Church in South Sioux City.

Survivors include four daughters, Alice and her husband, Eldon Erickson of Minneapolis, Donna and Gloria Curry and Lorna Custer, all of South Sioux City; two sons, James Curry of Sioux City and Roger Curry of South Sioux City; five grandchildren, Brent Erickson and his wife, Nina and Chad Erickson and his wife, Jackie, all of Minneapolis, Dennis Custer, Dean Curry and his special friend, Amy Bauer and Lora Curry; six great-grandchildren, Sarah, Amanda and Emily Erickson, AaLynn Curry and Dakota and Jesse Custer; seven stepchildren, Tom Curry and his wife, Dixie of Stanton, Neb., Robert Curry and his wife, Pat and Donald Curry and his wife, Charlotte, all of Sioux City, Clara Detrick of California, Ruth and her husband, Elmer Cechin of Omaha, and Edith and her husband, John Graser of Sioux City; a brother-in-law, Vernon “Bud” Peck of Sioux City; and many stepgrandchildren, step-greatgrandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leland; an infant stillborn daughter, Linda Sue; a 12-year old daughter, Bonnie Lea; her parents; a brother, Frank Smith; a sister, Frances Peck; and a stepdaughter, Eva Wiggs.

Robert H. “Bob” Mellema

Robert H. “Bob” Mellema, 61, of South Sioux City went to be with his maker Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2005.

Services were Saturday at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home, with the Rev. Clyde Pritchett officiating.

Bob was born April 3, 1943, in Orange City, Iowa, the son of Henry and Berniece (Tebrink) Mellema. He graduated from Orange City High School and attended Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa, where he obtained an associates degree in electronic engineering. He was employed with AB Dick Products Co. as a computer technician for the business machines.

He loved music and was quite a musician. He was very loved by all who knew him.

Survivors include his father and his wife, Henry and Nettie Mellema of Orange City; two daughters, Cindy and her husband, Tom McPherson of South Sioux City and Linda Risner of Sioux City; two brothers, Brian Mellema of Sioux Center, Iowa, and Melvin Mellema of Maurice, Iowa; four grandchildren, Jessica and Melissa Mellema and Rusty and Shaun Risner; and two great-grandchildren, Kailey Johnson and Branson Risner

Larry R. Schutt

SSC resident

Larry R. Schutt, 54, of South Sioux City died unexpectedly Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2005, at his residence.

Memorial services were Friday at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home, with the Rev. Chad Beckius officiating. The body was cremated.

Larry was born Oct. 15, 1950, in Sioux City, the son of Henry and Myrtle N. (Lang) Schutt. He was a 1968 graduate of Central High School in Sioux City. In 1972, he graduated from Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, S.D. While at Dakota Wesleyan, he toured with the Highlanders Musical Group. He received his master’s degree in education from Wayne State College in 1986.

He taught school in Waynesville, Mo., South Sioux City and Macy, Neb., where he was director of special education. He also was an adjunct faculty member at Wayne State College. He was the first male kindergarten teacher in South Sioux City. Upon retiring from teaching, he was a waiter and manager of various Sioux City and South Sioux City restaurants including the Paddock, Green Gables, Perkins, Red Lobster, the Airport Restaurant and the Hunt Club. He also worked with Rose Catering.

He married Judith A. Rainey on Aug. 23, 1980, in South Sioux City.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church and a proud member of Friends of Bill W. He also was a lifetime member of the PTA and the Education Association.

Survivors include his wife, Judy; his parents, Henry and Myrtle Schutt; two brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Susan and Johnny Hollis of Rancho Cordova, Calif., and David and Robin Rainey of Omaha; four nieces and various aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents; and a brother, Henry F. Schutt.

John Wesley Servine

Waterbury resident

John Wesley Servine, 85 of Waterbury, Neb.died on Friday, Feb. 18, 2005 at the Pender Community Hospital in Pender, Neb.

Funeral services were Thursday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Emerson, with the Rev. Gretchen Ritola officiating. Interment was in the Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City, Iowa.

John was born on June 21, 1919, between Bertha and Oakland, Neb. to John Emil and Elsie (Seger) Servine. The family moved to the Waterbury area when John was six months old. John attended country grade school, and graduated from Waterbury High School in 1936. He then farmed with his father until his father retired and moved to South Sioux City in 1949. John married Elaine Tozier on September 12, 1948 in Sioux City, Iowa. The couple farmed in the Waterbury area and raised five children.

John was active in cattle feeding and crop farming. His first love was cattle and attending livestock sales. He was a member of Northeast Nebraska Stocker Feeders Assn., and was a Past President of the Association. He was active in many Dakota County organizations, including: secretary of the Dist. 19 School Board; member of the Waterbury-Allen Fire Board; and the Dakota County Republican Party.

He served as County Commissioner from 1972 to 1976 and by appointment from June 1979 to August 1980. After retiring from farming and livestock buying, John drove for his son’s business, TS Rendering for six years. During this time he greatly enjoyed talking to area feeders and farmers on a daily basis.

John was an active member of the First Lutheran Church in South Sioux

City from 1948 through the 1970’s. He served on the Church Council during the building of the church currently located along Dakota Avenue.

John is survived by: Elaine, his wife of 56 years, two sons: Ron and his wife Vickie of Ponca, Neb.; Tom and his wife Sandy of Waterbury, Neb.; three daughters: Sharon Potter and her husband Rich of Ponca, Neb.; JoAnn Christoffersen of Lyons, NE; Beverly Heinrich and her husband Clynn of Rochester Hills, Mich., as well as 12 grandchildren: Andrew, Sara, Melissa and Scott Service; Matthew and Jacob Heinrich; Megan, Mallory and Marisa Christoffersen; Ryan and Jeff Potter; and Ronelle Welch. He is also survived by one sister, Fern Brazell of Davidson, N.C., several nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.

John was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, Douglas, one brother and sister-in-law, Melvin and Marguerite Servine, and one brother-in-law, Edward Brazell.

J. C. Ames

Former Homer resident

J. C. Ames, 25, of Dolores, Colo. and former Homer, Neb. and Meriden, Iowa area resident, passed away Sunday morning, Feb. 20, 2005 in Blanding, Utah due to injuries in an auto accident.

Funeral services were Friday, Feb. 25, at 2 p.m. at the Meriden Evangelical Free Church. Pastor Larry Ostercamp officiated. Burial was in the Liberty Cemetery, rural Meriden, Iowa. Memorial services will be held in Cortez, Colo. on March 3, 2005.

J. C. was born February 23, 1979 in Cherokee, Iowa to Dale and Carol (Darr) Ames. He was dedicated to the Lord in August of 1987. He graduated from Homer High School, Homer, Neb. in 1997. He was active in track and football his junior and senior years and played basketball and baseball all four years of high school. He attended DMAC College in Boone and Midland Lutheran College in Fremont where he played baseball. He then attended Wayne State College for one semester.

He had worked at the Argosy Casino in Sioux City for a short time, coached the American Legion baseball team in Homer, Neb. He was currently a salesman at the Ford Dealership in Cortez, Colo. He had lived in Dolores, Colo. for two years, 14 years in Homer and was originally from the Meriden, Iowa area. He was a member of the Meriden Evangelical Free Church and the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf, playing any type of sports and loved to wrestle with his nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Merrill and June Ames and his maternal grandfather Warren Darr and an aunt Lorraine Stoffern.

He is survived by his father Dale R. Ames of Cherokee, Iowa; his mother Carol Ames of South Sioux City, Neb.; two brothers: Brian Ames of Sheldon, Iowa; Alan Ames and his wife Amy of St. Paul, Minn.; his maternal grandmother Mildred Darr of Sutherland, Iowa; a sister-in-law Angie Ames of Alta, Iowa; a special friend Dellaney Padilla and her parents of Cortez, Colo.; 11 nieces and nephews and many friends in the Homer and Cortez area.

Earl M. Treadway

Former SSC resident

Earl M. Treadway, 59, of Fort Worth, Texas, formerly of South Sioux City, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2005, in Fort Worth.

Graveside services were Saturday in Omaha Valley Cemetery, Homer, Neb., with the Rev. Dan Thornton officiating.

Mr. Treadway was born Dec. 14, 1945, in Sioux City, the son of Hubert H. and Emma J. (Trickey) Treadway. He married Joyce Jacobsen on Feb. 21, 1981, in South Sioux City. He drove over the road for many years.

He loved being with his family, working on machinery and cars. He loved woodworking, painting pictures and doing handyman work. He was a very good artist. He was a Christian man, who loved studying other types of religions.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce of Council Bluffs, Iowa; a son, Montana Treadway at home; two daughters, Johanna Idelle and her husband, Jay Freymann and Emmy Lee Treadway, all of Omaha; three brothers, Hubert Treadway of Sioux City, Benny Treadway and his wife, LaVonne of Ames, Iowa, and Edward Treadway and his wife, Maxine of Sioux City; two sisters, Delores Beckenbach of Long Beach, Calif., and Leona Marshall of Downey, Calif.; an uncle, Edgar Trickey of South Sioux City; and two grandchildren, Jaylon and Eden Freymann of Omaha.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and an aunt, Florence Trickey.

Pallbearers were Montana, David, Craig, Chris and Wesley Treadway and Johanna Freymann. Honorary pallbearers were Clifford, Randy and Andrew Treadway and Jim Cloudas.

Edward P. O’Shaughnessy

SSC resident

Edward P. O’Shaughnessy, 86, of South Sioux City died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2005 at his residence.

A memorial mass will be held Thursday (today) at St. Michael Catholic Church in South Sioux City with the Rev. Dan Wittrock officiating. Burial with military flag presentation will be in St. Michael Catholic Cemetery.

Ed was born Nov. 18, 1918 in Sioux City, Iowa the son of Edward Francis and Mary (Hassman) O’Shaughnessy. He graduated from Homer High School in 1936. He served with the Army from Jan. 6, 1941 to Nov. 9, 1945. While in the army he was awarded the purple heart.

He married Zella Mae Sanford on Oct. 23, 1945 in Longview, Texas. They were married for 56 years before she passed away on June 8, 2002 in South Sioux City. He was a serviceman for IPS (Mid-American Energy) for many years.

Ed was a member of the South Sioux City Fire Department for 48 years and served as fire chief for four of those years. He also sold fire safety equipment. Ed has always been active in the St. Michael Parish family. He helped to build St. Michael Catholic Church and helped tear down the old one. Ed worked with Msg. Quinn on the heating equipment for the new church.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the Parish Council. He served as President of the Holy Name Men’s Society.

He organized the Boy Scouts of St. Michael’s and was instrumental in stating Bingo at St. Michael’s.

Survivors include his eldest son: William and his wife Carla O’Shaughnessy of San Jose, Cal., a daughter: Donna and her husband Lloyd Cain, Jr. of South Sioux City, a daughter-in-law: Elaine O’Shaughnessy of Salt Lake City, Utah, two sisters: Helen Howard of Emerson, Neb. and Margaret and her husband Alfred Jessen of Dakota City, Neb., six grandchildren: Michael, Angie, Christy and Cathy O’Shaughnessy, Sandra Mammen and Dan Thomas, one great grandson: Kael and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife: Zella, a son Patrick Joseph O’Shaughnessy, a brother: Frank Donnelly and a sister: Mary Rasmussen.

Honorary pallbearers will be Leon and Randy Jessen, Larry Grove, Dick McCabe, Ron Collins, Bob Church and members of the South Sioux City Fire Department.
