U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

Orrin Blair

Hubbard resident

Orrin B. Blair, 77, of Hubbard died Saturday, March 20 at a Sioux City hospital.

Memorial services will be Friday, March 26, 2004 at Homer United Methodist Church in Homer with the Rev. Chuck Rager officiating. Burial of the cremains with military honors will be in Green Valley Cemetery at rural Homer. Visitation at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home will be from 2-8 p.m. Thursday with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. The family will be present after 6 p.m.

Mr. Blair was born May 10, 1926 in Thurston, the son of James A. and Ethel R. (Dean) Blair. He graduated from Emerson-Hubbard High School in 1943. He farmed in the Thurston County area before entering the army in 1946. In 1949 he moved back and continued farming in Thurston and Dakota Counties. He worked for Terra Industries as an inter-departmental mail clerk from 1975 until his retirement in 1991.

He married Joyce E. Duncan Feb. 7, 1954 in Pender.

He was a member of Homer United Methodist Church and The American Legion Buckland Post #97 of Homer, where he served as chaplain.

Survivors include his wife, a son and his wife Larry and Sandy Blair and a daughter and her husband, Brenda and Rod Reed, all of Hubbard, a sister Helen Nelson of Ord, Neb.; four grandchildren: Brian Reed, Dawn Boyle, Rachel and Hannah Blair and three great granddaughters.

Orrin was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: James, Ronald and Malcolm and two sisters: Alice Leonard and Vernelle Blair.

Ruth H. Chase

Retired SSC teacher

Ruth H. (Flippin) Chase, 92, of South Sioux City died Saturday, May 22, 2004 at a Sioux City hospital.

Services were Friday at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Sioux City. Burial was in Bluff View Cemetery at Vermillion, S.D.

Ruth was born Sept. 7, 1911 in Burbank, S.D., the daughter of William E. and Elsie C. (Maude) Flippin. She received her teaching certificate and taught in country schools near Vermillion. She was a teacher in the South Sioux City School District until retiring. She married Joseph J. Garvis April 8, 1933. He died in 1960. She then married Rolland F. Chase June 6, 1964 in South Sioux City. He died Nov. 25, 1991 in Sioux City.

She had made her home at Matney Colonial Manor in South Sioux City the past three years and will be missed by the friends she had there.

She was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Sioux City and the Eastern Star Laura Chapter 301 in South Sioux City.

Survivors include two stepdaughters: Donna Clark of Limo, Colo., Betty Frack of Sun City, Ariz., four step-grandchildren, 10 step-great-grandchildren, five step-great-great-grandchildren, and special friends Jim and Toby Varvais of South Sioux City.

She was also preceded in death by a brother William E. Flippin and a sister Fern Culmer.

Louise Anderson

Daughter in SSC

Louise A. Anderson, 95, of Randolph, Neb., passed away on Thursday, May 27, in Randolph at a nursing home.

Services were Saturday, May 29, at Johnson Funeral Home in Randolph. Interment was in the Randolph Cemetery.

Louise was born March 3, 1909 in Pilger, Neb., the daughter of William and Anna (Heinemann) Willers. She graduated from Pilger High School in 1927. She married Raymond Anderson on Feb. 10, 1932 in Pilger. They lived in Pilger for three years, moved to Beldon where they farmed until 1974. Raymond passed away on Sept. 27, 1977.

She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Pilger. She was a member of Dorcas Circle, Belden Cemetery Association and the Wareham Club.

Survivors include three daughters: Marge Leiting of Randolph, Myrtle and Gene Weible of Omaha and Betty and Ronald Peters of South Sioux City; eight grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two grandchildren, one son-in-law, one sister and four brothers.

Lotus “Dode” Hill

Raised in Allen

Lotus “Dode” Hill, 82, of Kansas City, Mo., entered heaven on Thursday, May 20, 2004.

Memorial services were Thursday, May 27 at St. Luke Presbyterian Church in Kansas City. Memorial tributes are suggested to St. Luke Presbyterian Church.

Dode was born in Allen to Andrew E. and Viola (White) Christopherson. She attended country school through the eighth grade and then graduated in 1939 from Allen Consolidated School, where she was crowned homecoming queen. After graduation she was employed at the Dixon County Courthouse in Ponca by the Clerk of District Court and the County Judge. On. Sept. 14, 1943 she married the love of her life, Roger F. Hill at the Lutheran Church of Allen. Dode and her husband published the local newspaper, The Laurel Advocate. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Laurel.

After moving to Columbus in 1952 Dode contracted polio disease. She survived polio with several handicaps, but her true legacy was one of faith, determination and optimism.

She is survived by three children and their families: Larry R. and Dale Hill of Kansas City, Ralph and Pamela J. Irwin of Hot Springs, Ark., and Davie and Sandra K. Ziola of Crete, Neb.; four grandchildren: Sonja Irwin Huff of Hot Springs, Corey Irwin of Hot Springs, Ryan Ziola of Fremont and Jesse Hill Crutcher of Seattle, Wash; two great grandchildren, Sawyer and Bristol Huff of Hot Springs; and her sister Evelyn Christopherson Oldsen of Ponca.

Dode was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Roger who died Oct. 16, 1991.

Donald Smith

Born in Homer

Donald L. Smith, 79, of Decatur, Neb. died on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 22, at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Walthill with the Rev. J. C. Browne officiating. Interment was in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Pender

Donald was born on July 17, 1924 in Homer, to Charles and Alice (Harris) Smith. As a young man he lived and attended school in Walthill. He entered the U.S. Army, in 1943, serving as a paratrooper in Europe. He married Lois Angela Rihanek on Sept. 2, 1945 in Pender. After their marriage the couple lived in Sioux City and South Sioux City until 1988 when they moved to Decatur after retiring. Donald worked for Herman Bus for 35 years as a transport driver.

Donald is survived by his wife, Lois A. Smith of the home, son, Donald L. Smith Jr. of Decatur, five daughters: Veronica L. Rogers of Bay Point, Calif.; Alice M. Beargeon and her husband Roger of South Sioux City, Donna L. Chase and her husband Norman of Salisbury, Md.; Patricia K. Nelson and her husband Ronald of Antioch, Calif.; and Victoria L. Fay and special friend Robert Hurd of Sioux Falls, S.D. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents, brothers John, Harry and Harold Smith, and by a twin brother Ronald.

Theron Stimson

Emerson native

Theron F. (Skip) Stimson, 83 of Laramie Wyo., passed away Monday May 10, 2004 at Ivinson Memorial Hospital in Laramie.

Funeral services were held May 13 at the Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Ralph Rohr officiating. Burial at the Green Hill Cemetery with Military Rites by the Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 2221 and the Husted-Pendleton American Legion Post 14.

He was born June 14, 1920 to Harrison and Sarah Belle (Merry) Stimson in rural Emerson. He attended school in Emerson, graduating in 1937 and entered the military in March 1942 serving in WWII until April 1946. Hemarried Patricia PetersononAug. 21, 1943 at Camp Shelby, Miss. Following his tour of duty, the couple returned toLaramie until he received his commission in the Army, he returned to military service in Virginia, before returning to Laramie in 1949, at that time he joined the National Guard.

He returned to serve two years in Korea in 1952. He was active in many civic organizations and a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, the Veteran of Foreign Wars post #2221, the Husted Pendleton American Legion Post #14, the Laramie Lodge #3, A.F.& A.M. and Rotary. He served 37 years in the armed forces, retiring as a brigadier general with the Wyoming State National Guard in 1980.

He is survived by his wife Patricia, a son and wife Chris and Christina all of Laramie, four sisters: Julia Stimson of Wayne, Neb. Phyllis Krahmer of Emerson, Donna Gilster and Shirley Clausen both of Pender, a brother Robert Stimson of Lampe Mo. and a grandson Luke Stimson of Laramie.

Family members attending the services were, Julia Stimson of Wayne, Robert Stimson, Lampe Mo. Phyllis and Bob Krahmer of Emerson, Shirley and Jerry Clausen of Pender, Carol Hinrich of Lexington, Rod Krahmer and Leonard Stimson South Sioux City, Shelly and Joe Perez of Wakefield, Cindy Krahmer of Lincoln Neb. Barb Munic of Edina, Minn., Rick and Rockie Ustick of Jerome, Idaho, Stephanie McDonald, of Madison, Neb. and James Horak of Fort Collins, Colo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Scott, a sister Wilma Ustick, a brother Marvin Stimson.

Judge Tim Green

Brother in Homer

Judge Timothy Michael Patrick Green, 83, of Estes Park, Colo., formerly of St. Johns, Mich., entered his heavenly home May 11, 2004.

Friends are invited to the Internment Service at the St. John’s Mt. Rest Cemetery, Thursday, June 10, 2004 at 11 a.m. An Irish open house luncheon celebration will follow at Ye Ol’ Roadhouse, 901 State St., St. Johns.

Tim was a veteran of WWII, graduated from the University of Nebraska and received his law degree from the University of Notre Dame. He was a first lieutenant and served on the staff of General Douglas McArthur in the Philippines. He was a probate judge of Clinton County from 1957-1978, and circuit court judge for the Counties of Clinton and Gratiot from 1979-1992. He and his wife traveled extensively in the United States and abroad. He was most at home in Ireland, Nebraska and Higgins Lake, Mich.

Surviving are his wife Alma (Weber) Green of 59 years, his son Terry (Mary Lou) Green of Calsbad, Calif., two daughters Melanie (Randy) Humphrey of Estes Park and Sharon Chapin of Grand Rapids, Mich., and nine grandchildren: Michael, Erin, and B.J. Green, Kerry Humphrey, Dr. Sarah Marshall and Emily Titelbaum, and Kelly, Ryan and Connor Chapin; five great grandchildren and one brother Colin of Homer.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Ellen, his parents Michael and Charlotte Green of Hubbard and three brothers: Mark, Gerald and Bill.

Malinda Jane Collier

Born in Pender

Malinda Jane Collier, 32, Overland Park, passed away Monday May 17, 2004 at her home. Funeral services were 1 p.m., Thursday, May 20 at the Amos Family Chapel of Lenexa; burial in the Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been set up for her son Austin’s education c/o Peoples Bank, 7810 W. 151st Street, Overland Park, KS 66223.

Malinda was born Sept. 20, 1971 in Pender, to Johnnie and Polly (Madison) Johnson. She was graduate of the University of South Dakota and was an audiologist. Malinda was a member of Grace Church. She was an avid fan of Austin’s baseball. Malinda was preceded in death by her daughter, Kenzi Ann Collier on Jan. 15, 1999.

Survivors include her husband of 12 years, Chad Collier; son, Austin Collier; parents, Polly and Johnnie Johnson; brother, Jamie Johnson and his wife, Cheri; two nephews and three nieces all of Sioux City, and grandmother, Margaret Wolf, Allen.

Valentine Parker, Jr.

Macy resident

Valentine Parker, Jr., 72, of Macy died on Tuesday, May 18, 2004 at the USPHS Hospital in Winnebago.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 22 at the Omaha Nation High School in Macy, with Mr. Mitchell Parker officiating. A Native American service was held on Friday Evening. Interment was in the Omaha Tribal Cemetery in Macy.

Valentine was born on Nov. 30, 1931 in Winnebago, to Valentine and Minnie (Woodhull) Parker Sr. He was raised in Macy and graduated from Flandreau Indian School in South Dakota. He went on to attend Northeast Community College. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. In 1975 he married Winifred Parker. She passed away in March of 2002.

Valentine served the Omaha Tribe and the Community of Macy as a tribal elder and as a Tribal Council member. He enjoyed sporting events and his grandchildren.

Valentine is survived by his children, Mitchell Parker, Janet L. Sheridan, Christine Miller, James Grant, Sr., Timothy Grant, Kennard Parker, Vivian Joyce Parker, and Michael T. Parker, all of Macy, as well as 38 grandchildren and 42 great grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Viola Parker Walker of Macy and an aunt, Jerrine Parker.

Preceding Valentine in death were his parents, his wife Winifred, a sister, Katherine Gilpin, brothers: Baldwin Parker; Nathaniel Parker Sr., Matthew Parker and Joseph Kemp Sr.

Wayne Clift

Former SSC resident

Wayne E. Clift, 70, of Bethel, N.C., formerly of South Sioux City, died Saturday, May 29, 2004.

A graveside service was held June 2 in the mausoleum at Firewood Memorial Park.

He was born Oct. 3, 1933 to Horace and Eva Clift in Dakota County. He married Hazel Matthews March 13, 1961.

Wayne, a resident of Bethel since 1972, was a retired U.S. Air Force Veteran and served in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He was employed with Proctor and Gamble for 17 years and more recently worked with R.M. Wilson Apartments in Rocky Mount. A member of the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 37, in Greenville, N.C., he served as commander and also as a volunteer driver. He was a member of the Goldwing Riders Association.

Wayne is survived by his wife, one son Russell Clift and wife Laura and one daughter, Christine Clift, four grandchildren: Matt and Tyler Brown and Shaelyn and Dustin Clift.
