U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

Lorene P. Greeley

Lorene Pearle Greeley was born July 29, 1924, northwest of Wauneta, Neb. to Elmer and Leretta (Bush) Lewis.
As a young girl she attended rural country school and went on to attend Wauneta High School.
Lorene married Paul Cecil Greeley on April 5, 1941 at Imperial, Neb., and to this union three children were born: Clara, Beverly and Gerald.
Lorene and Paul made their home in Chase County living in the communities of Wauneta, Enders and Lamar where they lived for many years.
Lorene was a cook at the Lamar Grade School for 34 years, an accomplishment that she was very proud of.
Lorene passed away late Monday evening, Aug. 18, 2003 at the Ogallala Community Hospital, Ogallala, Neb. She was 79 years of age.
Survivors include daughter Clara Lehl of Brule, Neb.; daughter Beverly Hornbacher and husband Ron, North Platte, Neb.; son Gerald Greeley and wife Anita, Brule, Neb.; five grandchildren; four great grandchildren; sisters Lois Kanost of Wauneta, Neb., Reva Wicke of Wauneta, Neb., Vera Remington and husband Dick of McCook, Neb., Nadine Brass of Hayesville, Kan.; brothers Lloyd Lewis and wife Doris of Lincoln, Neb., John Lewis and wife Frances of Wauneta, Neb., Glen Lewis of Boonville, Mo., Jim Lewis and wife Charlene of Avoca, Iowa and Kenneth Lewis and wife JoAnn of Cambridge, Neb,
Lorene was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Paul in February of 2000.
A memorial has been established to the Lamar Volunteer Fire Department.

Lorene P. Greeley

Lorene P. Greeley, a long time resident of the Lamar area, passed away Monday night, Aug. 18, 2003, at the Ogallala Community Hospital, Ogallala, Neb. She was 79 years of age.
Survivors include two daughters: Clara Lehl of Brule and Beverly Hornbacher and her husband, Ron, of North Platte; a son, Gerald Greeley and his wife, Anita, of Brule; five grandchildren, four great grandchildren; four sisters: Lois Kanost of Wauneta, Reva Wicke of Wauneta, Vera Remington and husband, Dick, of McCook, and Nadine Brass of Hayesville, Kan; five brothers: Lloyd Lewis and his wife, Doris, of Lincoln, John Lewis and wife, Frances, of Wauneta, Glen Lewis of Booneville, Mo., Jim Lewis and wife, Charlene, of Avoca, Iowa, and Kenneth Lewis and wife, JoAnn, of Cambridge.
Graveside services will be held Friday, Aug. 22 at 2 p.m. at Riverside Cemetery, Wauneta.
Visitation will be held Friday morning, Aug. 22, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home in Wauneta.
A memorial has been established to the Lamar Volunteer Fire Department, Lamar, Neb.
Liewer Funeral Home of Wauneta is in charge of arrangements.

R.D. ‘Dale’ Breit

R.D. "Dale" Breit, 73, Hoxie, Kan., died Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003.
Mr. Breit was born March 8, 1930, in Arnold, to George and Barbara Roth Breit.
He married Barbara Cooper on June 4, 1950, in Danforth Chapel on the University of Kansas campus in Lawrence.
He moved to Hoxie in 1957.
He was a businessman, and he and his wife, owned and operated Cooper Dry Goods in Hoxie, Kan. and Imperial, Neb., until their retirement.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Hoxie, a lay minister and past member of the Board of Ordained Ministry and a past member of the board of directors of the Lydia Patterson Institute.
He was a member and past president of the Hoxie Rotary Club and a past district governor of Rotary International and a Paul Harris Fellow.
He was a member of the Hoxie Masonic Lodge and Order of Eastern Star and had served as master and worthy patron of the lodges.
He was a member of the Hoxie Elks Lodge and an honorary member of the Order of Moose. He had served on the board of directors for the Hoxie Area Chamber of Commerce and was a former member of the board of directors of the First National Bank of Hoxie.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara of Hoxie; a son, Blaine Breit and wife Pamela of Greeley, Colo.; two daughters, Ladeane Reese and husband Rick of Mount Hope and Janeece Woofter and husband Alan of Imperial, Neb.; two sisters, Vivian Borom and Anna Belle Tanner, both of Albany, Ga.; four grandchildren; four step grandchildren; a great grandchild; and seven stepgreat grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2003, at the United Methodist Church, Hoxie, with the Rev. Dick Robbins officiating.
Burial was in the Hoxie Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Dale Breit Rotary Memorial Scholarship Fund in care of Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home, 1024 Sheridan, Hoxie, Kan. 67740.

Barbara Breit

Barbara Breit, 72, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2003, in Hoxie, Kan., after a short battle with cancer. Services were held Aug. 15, 2003, in Hoxie.
Among her survivors is a daughter, Janeece Woofter, of Imperial.
Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home in Hoxie was in charge of arrangements.

Calvin Chandler

Calvin Ray Chandler was born in Haxtun, Colo., May 26, 1930, the son of Lee and Anna Chandler.
Cal was a farmer most of his life southeast of Holyoke, Colo.
July 29, 1948 he was united in marriage to Myrt Baumgartner of Puyallup, Wash. and to this union six children were born.
Cal was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
He leaves to mourn his wife Myrt Chandler of Holyoke, Colo.; son Steve Chandler of Thornton, Colo.; daughters Vicki Warner of Holyoke, Colo., Pam Newton of Trenton, Neb. and Sandi Selleck of Kansas City, Mo.; one brother Nile Chandler of Concord, Calif.; one sister Dolla Wood of Guylfport, Miss.; 13 grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Anna and Lee Chandler; three brothers, Max, Ward and Dale; one sister Shirley Kroger and two infant brothers; two daughters Kathy Chandler Smith and infant daughter Brenda Ann and one granddaughter Rachael Langenfeld.
Funeral services were held Friday, Aug. 8, 2003, from First Christian Church in Holyoke, Colo. for Cal Chandler, age 73, who passed away Monday, Aug. 4 at his home.
Jim Blake, minister of the church officiated at the services.
Interment was in Pleasant Valley Cemetery.
Robert-Baucke Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Ed Mills

Ed L. Mills, was born July 24, 1923, at Whiting, Iowa, to Eleanor (Courtright) and Ora Lee Mills. He died Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003, at his home in Greeley, Colo.
Ed married Thelma Klein in 1947 in Imperial. He was formerly from the Eaton and Greeley, Colo., area and had moved to various places with his military and forest service career.
He moved back to Colorado in 1961. He graduated from Chase County High School in Imperial and Colorado State College, now the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.
He was a chief petty officer in the Navy for 20 years and an administrative officer for the U.S. Forest Service while serving in the Naval Reserve for 10 years.
He was a member of the Eaton United Methodist Church, Masons and Eastern Star. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, traveling and playing cards with family and friends.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
Survivors include his wife, Thelma, of Greeley, Colo.; two sons: Scott Mills and wife, Jill, of Buffalo, Wyo., and Kevin Mills of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two daughters: Pamela and husband, Bill Ott, of Longmont, Colo., and Terri and husband, Dr. Michael Burke, of Corpus Christi, Texas; six grandchildren; and one brother, Buel Mills and wife, Mary, of Indianapolis, Ind.
Funeral services were Wednesday, Aug. 13 at the Eaton Chapel of Allnutt Funeral Service with burial at Eaton Cemetery, Eaton, Colo.
A memorial has been established to Hospice and Palliative Care, c/o AFS, 702 13th St., Greeley, CO 80631.

Jim Harris

Jim Harris was born on Dec. 23, 1951 at Grant, Neb. He was the youngest of eight children born to James Albert "Bert" and Ruby Jeanette (Kidd) Harris.
Although Jim was born with Down’s Syndrome and Hypothyroidism, his family always tried to incorporate him into family living.
He grew up on the Harris farm in the Blanche community in Chase County. Jim attended Elsie Grade School through the third grade and spent two years at the New Hope Village in Sutherland. He spent time with Glen and Iva McCoy in Grant and attended training at the Educational Service Unit 16 in Ogallala.
In 1974, Jim moved to North Platte where he was involved in an opportunity workshop. In 1975, Jim moved with his parents to Grant. His mother died in 1979 and his father in 1988.
With the help of family members, especially Corrine Harris, Jim was able to live in the family home by himself. He moved to North Platte in 1994 and in February of 2002, he moved to the Indian Hills Manor in Ogallala where he died on Saturday morning, Aug. 9, 2003. He had reached the age of 51.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister, Helen.
He is survived by three brothers: Keith Harris and wife, Beulah, of Imperial, Ervin "Fuzz" Harris of Grant, and Larry Harris and wife, Audrey, of Ogallala; three sisters: Susie Anderson of Kearney, Freda Nutt and husband, Wayne, of Dickens and Sharon Nutt and husband, Tom, of Holdrege; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 12 at the Grant United Methodist Church with Pastor Sally Ruggia-Haden, officiating.
Music was provided by Lori McCloskey and Carolyn Harms.
Casketbearers were Doug, Terry, Jay, Ted and Ben Harris, Steve and Mike Nutt and Rodney Lee.
Burial was in the Blanche Cemetery.
A memorial has been established to the Blanche Cemetery.
Bullock-Long Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Margaret Bonner

Margaret Bonner was born on July 7, 1913 at O’Neill, Neb. She was the oldest of six children born to Alfred and Blanche Cole Revell.
The family lived in O’Neill before moving to Imperial where Margaret attended high school.
Margaret was married to Robert Bonner on Jan. 26, 1933 in Grant. They lived in Chase County and Imperial where they operated a grocery store.
In the early 1950s they moved to Wichita where Margaret managed a Peter Pan Ice Cream Shop.
After spending a brief period in Missouri they moved to Madrid in 1957. They later started the Bonner Drive-Inn which currently is the Little Country Kitchen.
Robert died in 1966 and Margaret eventually moved to Oshkosh where she managed the hotel and worked in a cafe.
In 1984 she returned to Grant and lived at Sunset Haven. She moved to Golden Ours Convalescent Home in 1997 where she died Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 5, 2003. She had reached the age of 90.
Margaret was affiliated with the Grant United Methodist Church. While living at Sunset Haven, Margaret enjoyed taking part in the activities at the Grant Senior Center.
She always appreciated her garden and her flowers. She spent many hours quilting and crocheting. Margaret entertained family and friends with her ability to play the organ which she learned to play by ear.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three brothers, one sister and one granddaughter.
She is survived by three daughters, Marilyn (Leroy) Tegarden of Ellensburg, Wash., Glenna Fullerton of Hollister, Mo., and Barbara (Neal) Vlasin of Madrid; two sons Bruce ( Shirley) Bonner of Sulson, Calif. and Brad (Tracy) Bonner of Loveland, Colo.; 18 grandchildren; five step grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; seven step great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren; one sister, Lila Morris of Madrid; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003, at 10 a.m. at the Grant United Methodist Church with Pastor Sally Ruggia-Haden, officiating.
Music was provided by soloist Lori McCloskey and pianist Carolyn Harms.
Casketbearers were Pat Vlasin, Kevin Vlasin, Brian Fish, Alan Fish, Brad Johnson and Gary Samuelson.
Interment was at Mount Hope Cemetery in Imperial.
Bullock-Long Service was in charge of arrangements.
