Vera A. Bentz

Vera A. Bentz passed Wednesday morning, July 16, 2003 at the Ogallala Hospital in Ogallala, Neb.
Among the survivors are husband Basil of Ogallala and daughters Anne Parcell of Flintridge, Calif., Maxine Bentz of Aurora, Colo., Lana Jo Westfahl of Colby, Kan. and Sharon Spady of Imperial, Neb.
Funeral services are pending.

Alva Martin

Alva Martin of Holyoke, Colo. died Sunday morning, July 13, 2003.
Funeral services will be Saturday, July 19 at 10 a.m. at the First Christian Church, Holyoke.

Phillis Mick

Phillis Gertrude Mick was born on Sept. 15, 1919, near Enders, Neb. to Foster S. and Ethel May (Humphrey) Van Dyke.
As a young girl she attended school in Enders, Neb.
Phillis married Harold Eugene Mick on Oct. 13, 1934, at Osceola, Iowa and to this union two daughters were born: Carol and Sherry.
The couple made their home at Enders. Phillis was employed at several locations before starting her career as a nurse’s aid at Chase CountyHospital in 1959. She continued working at the hospital for many years, even through open heart surgery.
Harold passed away in May of 1974, after an automobile-train accident near Imperial, Neb. and Phillis continued her work receiving the Kind Care Award from Chase county Hospital and living at Enders.
Phillis was a member of the Enders Women’s Fellowship which she enjoyed very much.
In retirement, Phillis enjoyed gardening, cooking for her family and following the interests of her grandchildren.
Phillis passed away early Sunday morning, July 13, 2003, at the Imperial Manor Nursing Home in Imperial, Neb.
She was 83 years of age.
Survivors include: daughter Carol Quinn and husband, Duane of Oxford, Neb.; five grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; and a special friend and companion, Wayne Sharp.
Phillis was preceded in death by her parents, husband Harold, daughter Sherry and sisters Dorothy Sutton and Lois Ludlow.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 16, 2003, at 2 p.m. (MDT) at the Church of the Brethren, Enders, Neb. with Pastor Francis Baker officiating.
Organist was Mrs. Tina Grosbach, pianist was Mrs. Lois Wine and soloist was Mrs. Charlotte Wine.
Casketbearers were Jim Quinn, Bob Quinn, Mike Quinn, Cody Quinn, P.J. Quinn, Caleb Quinn and Cyrus Quinn.
Interment followed at Mount Hope Cemetery, Imperial, Neb.
A memorial has been established in Phillis’ memory.
Liewer Funeral Home of Imperial was in charge of arrangements.

Wayne Davidson

Wayne Davidson was born March 11, 1923 to Alan and Myrtle Davidson and grew up in northwest Lamar.
He had a sister, Mary and two younger brothers Glen and Merl.
Wayne was baptized and was a member of the Lamar Christian Church.
Wayne enjoyed horses at a very early age and often rode his pony to school.
Wayne graduated from Chase County High School in 1941. He was called to serve his country in World War II. He was a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division serving in France and was stationed in Fort Knox, Ky.
While stationed in Kentucky Wayne met Frances Durham from Louisville, Ky. They married after the war and returned to make their home in Nebraska. To this union were born three daughters, Nancy, Jane and Linda.
The family raised and raced thoroughbreds on their farm south of Lamar and were blessed with many successful runners.
After separation, Wayne then married Patricia Grace until the mid 80s. They had one daughter, Dawn Nicole.
During this time Wayne continued to race thoroughbreds. Wayne enjoyed flying and obtained his private pilot’s license.
He also enjoyed sunsets, reading and nature. He is past president of the Nebraska, Colorado and South Dakota division of the Horseman’s HBPA association. During his office with the HBPA he travelled to many countries.
Wayne was a dedicated father and grandfather. He enjoyed spending time with his family, friends and neighbors. He was an active participant in the Chase County Stompers.
Wayne passed away at the Imperial Manor on June 29, 2003, he was 80 years old. Wayne is preceded in death by an infant daughter, Nancy; parents Alan and Myrtle and sister Mary.
Survivors include three daughters: Jane Moreland and husband Michal, Linda Davidson and Dawn Rivas and husband Francisco; two brothers: Glen and his wife Lorraine and Merl and his wife Mary Kay; six grandchildren: Eric, Blake, Isha, Trystan, Arianna and Brianna.
Wayne was a loving father, grandfather and friend and will be dearly missed by many.
Funeral services were held Thursday, July 3, 2003, at 10 a.m. at the Wesleyan Church of Imperial, Neb. with Pastor Todd Burpo officiating.
Casketbearers were Eric Moreland, Blake Moreland, Rex Clevenger, Jerry Benge, Tom Rowley and Ray Bahler.
Military rites were by VFW Post #4688 and American Legion Post #92, Imperial.
Interment was at Green Lawn Cemetery, Lamar, Neb. with Liewer Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Martha Weir

Martha Weir, 94, died Monday morning, July 7, 2003, at the Imperial Manor.
Among survivors are her son, Bill Weir, and his wife, Nancy, of Imperial; eight grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Doris Glenn of San Antonio, Texas.
Private inurnment will be held Saturday, Aug. 9 at Riverside Cemetery in Encampment, Wyo.
A memorial has been designated to the Imperial Public Library.

Willma J. Fadeley

Willma J. Fadeley of Imperial died Tuesday, July 1, 2003, at the Northern Colorado Medical Center in Greeley, Colo.
She was 69 years old.
Survivors include a son, Scott Winslow, and his wife, Lenora, of Flagler, Colo.
A private inurnment will be held at Fairview Cemetery, Burlington, Colo., at a later date.
Liewer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Rick Olson

Rick Olson, age 43, of Arvada Colo., a veteran of the U. S. Army 82nd Airborne Division, died June 30, 2003 in Lakewood, Colo. Rick was a former resident of Grant, Neb.
Rick was born April 25, 1960 in Altus, Okla., to Harold and Frances Olson.
He grew up in the Imperial-Grant area and graduated from Perkins County High School in 1979. He later moved to Colorado after his military service and operated his own construction business.
He loved all outdoor activities and gained great joy from riding his motorcycle. The most precious person in his life was his daughter Shandi.
Rick was preceded in death by his grandparents Peter and Minnie Olson and John and Reneta Hallett.
Rick is survived by his daughter Shandi Olson of Arvada, and very special companion Kim Yost also of Arvada; parents Harold and Frances Olson of Grant; brothers Dennis and wife Janiell of Wallace, Neb., Robert and wife Maryann of Richmond Hill, Ga., Ronald and wife Shelby of Kimball, Neb.; sisters Cindy and husband Paul Wolfe of North Platte, Neb., and Gena and husband Paul Romero of Wheat Ridge, Colo., and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and many, many friends, who will miss him greatly.
Services were held at the Fort Logan National Cemetery in Colorado with full military honors.

Larry Dale Dudden

Larry Dale Dudden was born on May 11, 1949 in Holyoke, Colo. He was the second of three children born to Orville J. and Betty June (Caskey) Dudden.
Larry attended the Venango Public Schools where he is especially remembered for pole vaulting, trumpet playing, and his active social life. Larry graduated from Venango High School in 1967. He then studied electronics in Denver, Colo.
Larry returned to Venango in 1968 and began his lifelong love with farming and the rural life-style. Larry’s involvement began with a combine he got from granddad Barney Dudden. Keeping the combine running led to his interest in restoring antique cars and tractors. His interest in ranching and livestock started with a horse from his granddad Earl Caskey. Larry gave his heart and soul to the land and the livestock.
On June 3, 1978, Larry was married to Karla Kay Pidgeon in Denver. One daughter, Lesley Kay was born on March 1, 1989 to this union. Larry shared his interest in horses with Lesley and they passed many hours riding, barrel racing, and grooming their horses.
Larry was diagnosed with ALS disease in October of 2000 but continued to valiantly live with it to the best of his ability. He was transferred to the Perkins County Community Hospital in Grant, Neb., last Sunday afternoon where he died Tuesday morning, June 24, 2003. He was 54 years old.
Larry will be remembered as a loving and devoted father. He was a good friend who had a good time. Always entertaining family, friends, and neighbors in his home or shop, he instigated many parties, class reunions, and family events.
Larry was preceded in death by his father, Orville.
He is survived by those he loved, his wife Karla and daughter, Lesley; his mother, Betty; one brother, Dan and wife Virginia Dudden and their daughter, Katherine; one sister, Cheryl and husband Dan Kaup and their children, Amber and Bret; many other relatives and friends.
Services were held Saturday, June 28, at the Grant United Methodist Church with Pastor Sally Ruggia-Haden officiating. Music was provided by Dolores Sexson and Rigg Leachman. Casket bearers were Albert Beard, Jerry Klug, Marc Newman, Ron Smith, Randy Busch, Dwight Beckman, Doug Kaup and Josh Jaeger.
Interment was in the Venango Cemetery.
Bullock Long Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Marie Krumm

Marie (Nein) Krumm, age 79, of Holyoke, died Wednesday, June 25, 2003 at Melissa Memorial Hospital in Holyoke.
Marie was the first of five children, born Nov. 14, 1923 to John and Katherine Nein on a farm near the Jumbo Reservoir west of Sedgwick.
She was baptized into the Christian faith on Dec. 23, 1923 at the German Church in Sedgwick by Pastor T.L. Seiger. She was confirmed in the German Church in May of 1938 in the class with her best friend and later to be sister-in-law, Thelma Nein.
On Jan. 11, 1942 she was united in marriage to Henry Krumm in Sedgwick. To this union four children were born, Eugene Henry, Kenneth Leroy, Judith Marie and Gary Lee. Their marriage was blessed for over 60 years with a celebration in their honor on Jan. 11, 2002 shortly before Henry’s death on March 12.
They lived and farmed for many years in Sedgwick and Ovid as well as Champion and Chase County in Nebraska. Marie always talked about the hand labor required to raise a crop of sugar beets and it was just as much a part of her life as was her family. She always stood beside Henry at many awards banquets, the most memorable one being the 10,000-Pound Club from Great Western Sugar Company in 1981.
Marie was known by her family and friends for her hospitality. One of her greatest enjoyments was cooking for those who came to visit. Marie loved to cook and Henry loved to entertain.
Marie reaffirmed her faith in 1996 and became a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Holyoke. She spent the past five years at the Prairie Vista Care Center in Holyoke where the staff became her very close friends and provided comfort and care.
She was preceded in death by her parents; loving husband Henry, son Kenneth Leroy Krumm; grandson Paul Michael Krumm; and sister Caroline Nein.
Marie is survived by son Eugene Krumm and wife Dorothy, of Julesburg; daughter Judy Powell and husband Ted of Southlake, Texas; son Gary Krumm and wife Carol of Holyoke; three brothers Reiny Nein and wife Alfreda of Sterling; Albert Nein of Phoenix, Ariz.; and Johnny Nein and wife Gwen of Julesburg; sister-in-law Thelma Nein of Sedgwick; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Marie Krumm were conducted at 2 p.m., Monday, June 30, 2003 at Zion Lutheran Church in Holyoke, with Pastor Gary Rahe officiating.
Interment was made at the Sedgwick Cemetery in Sedgwick.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Zion Lutheran Church, 240 South High School Street, Holyoke, CO 80734.
Arrangements were under the direction of Roberts-Baucke Funeral Service, Inc. of Holyoke.

Fletcher Whips

Fletcher Whips was born on Sept. 25, 1912 in Chase County south of Grant, Neb. He was the fourth of six children born to Frank and Jennie Hoffman Whips. Fletcher grew up in the Grant area, attending early elementary rural school before coming into Grant to complete his grade school. He then began farming with his father, an avocation that he would continue for the rest of his life.
Fletcher saw a wide range of changes during his farming life. Early on he helped train teams of mules for picking corn and pulling wagons and later experienced the advent of modern tractors and combines.
Fletcher was married to Irene Searl on Sept. 10, 1938 at Oberlin, Kan. They lived southwest of Grant for a brief time before moving to their farmstead straight south of Grant in 1941. They lived at their farmstead their entire married life. Irene died in 1996 and Fletcher continued to maintain his farm home until recently when he moved in with his daughter in Madrid.
Fletcher was transferred to the Perkins County Community Hospital in Grant late Tuesday night, June 24, 2003 where he died. He had reached the age of 90.
Fletcher had a good sense of humor and liked to tease as well as be teased. He appreciated the history of this area and always had a story if you had time to listen. He had an appreciation for antiques as well as the story that would go with each one of them. He was proud of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was pleased that the Whips name would live on for a long time.
Fletcher was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Frank, and two sisters, Edna Mickish and Mabel Beal; his wife Irene; one son Danny and one daughter-in-law, Adela, and one great-granddaughter, Jamie Provenzano.
He is survived by his daughter, Joyce Provenzano of Madrid, two sons, Jerry of rural Grant and Verl and his wife Billie of Elk Grove, Calif.; three grandsons, Mark Provenzano, Julian and Ted Whips; three granddaughters, Denise Ball, Jeannie Whips and Dena Farrar; two great-grandchildren, Stephanie and Justin Whips; and two sisters, Ethel Brown of Grant and Margaret and her husband Frosty Quick of McCook, Neb., and other relatives and friends.
Committal services were held Saturday, June 28, 2003 at the Fairview Cemetery in Grant, with John Long officiating. Casket bearers were Marc Provenzano, Julian Whips, Ted Whips, Sheldon Giesbrecht, Clayton Giesbrecht, and Bernie Deaver.
Interment was in the Grant Cemetery.

Samuel A. West III

Samuel A. West III, 69, of York, Neb. died Wednesday, June 25, 2003, in York.
He was born July 19, 1933 near Wauneta, Neb. to Samuel E. and Leona (Churchill) West II.
He graduated from Wauneta High School, was a musician and made a career as a country music entertainer.
He married Gladys Parker on July 17, 1973 at St. Paul, Neb.
He loved fishing, hunting and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife, Gladys of York; daughters, Terri (Jim) Turcotte of Morrison, Colo., Vicki (Steve) Bradley of Grand Island, Neb., Pat Hoover of Lincoln, Neb., Lori (Bill) Rowley of Alliance, Neb.; sons, Samuel E. (Cindy) West IV of Alda, Neb., Mike West of Texas, Joe West of Arvada, Colo., Val (Joan) West of Milford, Neb., Jeff (Susan) West, Scott West and Benjamin West, all of York; 27 grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; seven step grandchildren; sisters, Wanda (Milton) Winkelmann of Staplehurst, Neb., Bonnie Winkelman of Utica; brothers, Bob (Elna Rae) West of Alda, Neb. and Gail (Nona) West of Lincoln.
Preceding him in death were his parents; brother, Carl; one step grandson.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 28, 2003, at Metz Chapel in York.
There was cremation.
Interment of ashes at a later date at the Ash Hollow Cemetery, Lewellen, Neb.
Metz Mortuary in York is in charge of arrangements.
