Gerald V. Witkop Sr., JAFFREY

JAFFREY - Gerald V. Witkop Sr., 86, of Nelson Circle, died Thursday at The Hospice House of CRVNA in Concord following a long illness.

He was born in Springfield, Mass., the son of Matthew and Margaret (Melia) Witkop. He was employed at Indian Motorcycle in Springfield, Mass., as a welder and experimental designer. He later owned and operated a plumbing and heating business in Springfield Mass., until his retirement to Jaffrey.

He was a communicant of St. Patrick Church, where he was actively involved with parish and school activities and where he donated his plumbing skills to various improvement projects. He was a charter member of Our Lady of Monadnock Council No. 8544 Knights of Columbus, a charter member of Holy Trinity Council No. 4306, a member of the color corps of St. Patrick Assembly No. 2129, and chairman of the annual Knights of Columbus Senior Citizens Christmas dinner at St. Patrick. He began the improvements at St. Patrick Cemetery and was actively involved up until this past year. He was also a member of the Jaffrey Chamber of Commerce and a volunteer driver for the Meals on Wheels Program.

For many years he has collected and restored antique phonographs and has conducted educational lectures about his collection to various community and church groups and at many schools throughout New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

He was predeceased by his wife, M. Kathryn (Hart) Witkop.

He is survived by a son, Gerald Witkop Jr. of Wilbraham, Mass.; seven daughters, Jeanette Gilmartin, Eileen Witkop and Jane Sullivan, all of Springfield, Mass., Josephine Soddon and Kathleen Butler of West Springfield, Mass., Anne Trudeau of South Deerfield, Mass., and Mary Limoges of Bow; 17 grandchildren; nine stepgrandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a cousin; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Cournoyer Funeral Home, 33 River St., Jaffrey, and again tomorrow from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Corridan Funeral Home, 333 Springfield St., Chicopee, Mass.

Funeral services will be at the Corridan Funeral Home at 9 a.m. on Monday followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. in Holy Name of Jesus Church, South Street, Chicopee. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Chicopee.

Elaine E. Wilson, LACONIA

LACONIA - Elaine E. Wilson, 78, of Blueberry Lane, died yesterday at Genesis Eldercare, Laconia Center.

She was born in Concord, the daughter of Nathaniel and Blanche (Perron) Pease. She grew up in Concord and was a graduate of St. John's High School. She had lived in Belmont until moving to Laconia. She had been employed as a stitcher at Page Belting of Concord and was a foster mother to more than 40 children over the course of 10 years. She was a communicant of St. Joseph Church in Belmont.

She is predeceased by a daughter, Lisa Bourque of Gloversville, N.Y.

She is survived by her husband, Leo Wilson of Gilford; two sons, Vernon Wilson and Russell Wilson, both of Loudon; eight grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; three brothers, Milton Pease of Portland, Conn., Nathaniel Pease of Inverness, Fla., and Clayton Pease of Loudon; two sisters, Udola Pearl of Boscawen, and Dolores Fifield of Canterbury; and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of her life will be held at the home of her son, Vern Wilson, 13 Lesmerises Road, Loudon, on Monday at 2 p.m. Burial will be held in Park Cemetery, Tilton.

The Paquette-Neun Funeral Home, Northfield, is in charge of the arrangements.

James M. McCabe, NEW LONDON

Sunday, September 26, 1999

NEW LONDON - James M. McCabe, 90, of Page Road, died Wednesday at his home.

He was born in Belfast, Ireland, the son of Hugh and Mary Isabella (Rogers) McCabe. He had lived in New London since 1965, previously residing in West Roxbury, Mass.

McCabe had been employed by Criscenti's Market Inc., Kearsarge Regional School District as a custodian and bus driver, and the Colonial Pharmacy. He was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church and the County Squires, and he took part in militia re-enactments at the New London Historical Society.

His wife, Ruth (Winslow) McCabe, died in 1984, and his granddaughter, Heather Tulloch, died in 1988. He was also predeceased by a brother and two sisters, Hugh, Elizabeth and Isabel.

Surviving members of his family include three daughters, Sheila Mitchell of New London, Leita McKenna of Franklin, Mass., and Sharon Currie of Harwich Port and Medway, Mass.; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; his friend, Marjorie Winslow of North Fort Myers, Fla.; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no calling hours.

A memorial service will be held on Oct. 16 at noon at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Gould Road, New London, with the Rev. Dr. Frederick Stecker IV officiating.

Burial will be in West Part Cemetery, New London.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lake Sunapee Region Visiting Nurse Association, P.O. Box 2209 New London, or to Shriners Hospital for Children (Burns Institute), 51 Blossom St., Boston, Mass. 02114.

Edwin E. Hall, WEBSTER

Sunday, September 26, 1999

WEBSTER - Edwin E. Hall, 71, died Friday at the Veteran's Affairs Medical Center in Manchester.

He was born in Barton, Vt., and lived in Franklin before moving to Webster 11 years ago.

He worked for Week's Family Restaurant in Concord and then for Favorite Family restaurant in Franklin before his retirement.

He was an Air Force veteran of World War II and the Korean War.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Minnie (Flander) Hall of Webster; two sons, Steven Hall and Louis Whitcomb, both of Webster; four brothers; five sisters; and a grandchild.

There are no calling hours.

Graveside services will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m. in New Waterloo Cemetery in Warner. The Rev. Lafayette Pickney will officiate.

The Holt-Woodbury Funeral Home, 825 Park Ave., Contoocook, is in charge of the arrangements.

Robert P. Laird, TILTON

Saturday, September 25, 1999

TILTON - Robert P. Laird, 87, of Winter Street, died Thursday after a long illness.

He was born in Concord, where he lived for many years before moving to Tilton.

He served with the U.S. Air Force before retiring as a staff sergeant. He served during World War II and the Korean War. Prior to his service, he worked as a postal clerk and after his service, he worked at the Rumford Press. He was a 30-year member of the American Legion Post No. 0021 and a long-time member of the Air Force Sergeant's Association and the VFW Post No. 1631.

He is survived by two cousins, Evelyn Hassett of Bristol, Conn., and Lois Craigue of Penacook.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. in the chapel at the Wendell J. Butt Funeral Home, 42 Washington St., Penacook. Interment services will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in West Concord with the Rev. John Johnson officiating. Calling hours will be prior to the service from 9:30 to 10 a.m.

Isabell R. Penney, PITTSFIELD

Saturday, September 25, 1999

PITTSFIELD - Isabell R. Penney, 72, of Main Street, died at her home yesterday after a long illness.

She was born in Norton, Mass., the daughter of Albert and Emily Penney. She was a long-time resident of Cambridge, Mass., before moving to Pittsfield.

She spent most of her life as a homemaker raising her two children. She was a former member of the VFW Women's Auxillary Post 19 of Somerville, Mass.

She was predeceased by her husband, Alexander Penney.

She is survived by a son, Paul Penney of Pittsfield; two sisters, Evelyn Davis and Jennie Bokowski, both of Connecticut; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

There will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Mass., at the convenience of the family.

Rita M. LeCompte

Rita M. LeCompte, 88, died yesterday at Pleasant View Nursing Home after a long illness.

She was born in Fisherville, Mass., the daughter of Joseph and Roseanna (Coll) Rheault. She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church, where she was a member of the Ladies of Saint Ann and the Womens Club.

She was predeceased by her husband, Robert LeCompte.

She is survived by a son, Richard LeCompte of Londonderry; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held tomorrow from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Waters Funeral Home, 50 S. Main St.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday at noon at the Sacred Heart Church, 52 Pleasant St., with the Rev. Aime Boisselle officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Elaine G. Moynihan, LACONIA

Monday, September 27, 1999

LACONIA - Elaine G. Moynihan, 77, of Butler Street, died Saturday afternoon at the Catholic Medical Center in Manchester following a brief illness.

She was born in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of Allen and Elizabeth (Nyhan) Grew. She grew up in Manchester and graduated from St. Joseph's High School for Girls in 1940. She had been a resident of Laconia since 1947.

In her early years in Laconia, she was an active member of the Lakeport Women's Club, sang in the Club Chorus and was a den mother for Cub Scouts, Den 2, Pack No. 68.

She was an avid swimmer and enjoyed her summers spent at the family camp on Lake Winnipesaukee. She looked forward to her annual trip to Florida.

She was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Laconia.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Andrew Moynihan, of Laconia; a son, John Moynihan of Gilford; two daughters, Melanie Moynihan of Bristol, and Lisa Hazeltine of Gilford; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant Street, Laconia tomorrow from 7 to 9 p.m. using the Carriage House entrance.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph's Church, 30 Church St., Laconia on Wednesday at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in the family lot in Bayside Cemetery, Laconia.

The Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, P.O. Box 50, Memphis Tenn., 38101-9929.

Norman Leggett

Tuesday, September 28, 1999

Norman Leggett, 89, of Lake Street, died on August 18 in his home.

He was born in Manchester, the son of James and Alice (Lovering) Leggett.

He worked as a civil engineer and architect in the early 1940s in the construction of the Bermuda Air Base. He retired from Anderson-Nichols and Co. after many years.

He was a longtime member and architect of the Concordia Lutheran Church in Concord and an associate of the New Hampshire Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn (Johnson) Leggett, a nephew, a niece and a cousin.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Concordia Lutheran Church in Concord with Pastor Fred Teichmann officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

The Bennett Funeral Home, Concord, is in charge of the arrangements.
