Agnes L. VanderHaegen, DELAND, Fla.

Wednesday, October 27, 1999

DELAND, Fla. - Agnes L. VanderHaegen died Aug. 30 in Deland, Fla., in a nursing home where she had been living since May.

She was born in Concord, the daughter of Morrill and Georgia (Fitts) Smith. She lived in Concord for many years before moving to Deland in 1983.

She belonged to the Dunbarton Historical Society. She was a hospital gift shop volunteer and she also belonged to several clubs in Deland.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Janice, in 1982; and a brother, Dr. Preston Smith of Holderness in 1988.

She is survived by nieces and cousins.

Her ashes will be interred in Blossom Hill Cemetery in Concord at the convenience of the family.

Memorial donations may be made to the Dunbarton Historical Society, in care of Wendy Dailey, Rangeway Road, Dunbarton 03045.

The Bennett Funeral Home of Concord is in charge of local arrangements.

Carl J. Puleo Sr., MALDEN, Mass.

MALDEN, Mass. - Carl J. Puleo Sr., a relative of area residents and a former resident of Malden, Mass., died Monday.
He was predeceased by two brothers, John Puleo and Daniel Puleo.
He is survived by his wife, Eleanor (Mazza) Puleo of New Hampshire; a son, Carl Puleo Jr. of Melrose, Mass.; two daughters, Donna Downs of Billerica, Mass., and June Wallace of Hopkinton; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; four sisters, Margaret Puopolo, Grace Walters, Anne Brescia, and Pauline Trischetta; and four brothers, Salvatore Puleo, Vincent Puleo, John Puleo and Francis Puleo.
There are no calling hours.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. in St. Peter's Church, Pearl Street, Malden, Mass. Interment will be at Wyoming Cemetery in Melrose, Mass.
Memorial contributions may be made to Concord Regional Visiting Nurse Association, P.O. Box 1797, Concord 03302.
The A.J. Spadafora Funeral Home of Malden, Mass., is in charge of arrangements.

Grace F. Powers, NEW LONDON

Tuesday, October 26, 1999

NEW LONDON - Grace F. (Burke) Powers, 97, died Saturday at the Clough Extended Care Center in New London.

She was born in Waltham, Mass., the daughter of John and Mary (Shea) Burke. She lived in Waltham for more than 90 years before moving to New Hampshire in 1995. She lived at Foxchase in South Sutton for four years.

She was a member of the Grange, the Waltham Mothers Club and was an active communicant at Saint Mary's Parish in Waltham for many years.

She was predeceased by her husband, Stanley Powers; a daughter, Nancy Ballou, and by seven brothers and sisters.

She is survived by a son, Peter Powers of Hopkinton; a daughter, Marilyn Ohlsen of Palmerton, Pa.; 14 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be held today from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main St., Waltham, Mass.

The funeral will be held tomorrow at 9 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at the Blessed Sacrament Chapel of St. Charles Borromeo Church, 51 Hall St., Waltham.

Burial will be in Mount Feake Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the United Way.

Pearl M. Fletcher

Wednesday, October 27, 1999

Pearl M. Fletcher, 81, of Hopkinton Road, died Monday at Concord Hospital.

She was born in Loudon, the daughter of Wilbur and Edith (Davidson) Kendall.

She was a craftsperson and bookkeeper for Concord Arts & Crafts and a member of the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen. She was also a member of the United Baptist Church and an avid skier.

She was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth Fletcher, and a brother, Ralph Kendall.

She is survived by a son, K. Allen Fletcher of Concord; a daughter, Joan Plodzik of Concord; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Ruth Burt of Canterbury; and nieces and nephews.

There are no services.

Memorial donations may be made to the Concord Regional Visiting Nurse Association, P.O. Box 1797, Concord 03302.

M.E. Gillis, HOUSTON

Wednesday, October 27, 1999

HOUSTON - M.E. "Gene" Gillis, 69, of Houston and Troup, Texas, and a relative of area residents, died Monday at his home in Houston.

He was born in Fentress, Texas, the son Fred and Seawillow Gillis. He was a 1951 graduate of the University of Texas.

He worked with Humble Oil & Refining Company, and retired as vice president of human resources of Exxon Corp. in 1994.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, June (Evans) Gillis; a son, David Gillis of Houston; a daughter, Dana Gillis-Cabanel of Concord; three grandchildren; and several nieces and a nephew.

Calling hours will be held today from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, 13001 Katy Freeway, Houston.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 10 a.m. at Chapelwood United Methodist Church in Houston. The Rev. Jim Jackson, the Rev. Carey Sayers and the Rev. Kelly Williams will officiate.

A memorial service will be held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Troup United Methodist Church in Troup, Texas. The Rev. Jon Stouffer will officiate.

Private interment services will be held in Griffin Community Cemetery in Griffin, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.

John C. Lewis, GROTON

Wednesday, October 27, 1999

GROTON - John C. Lewis, 70, of Sculptured Rocks Road, died Thursday at Speare Memorial Hospital in Plymouth.

He was born in Concord, the son of Crosby and Miriam (Putney) Lewis. He lived in Weymouth, Mass., before moving to Groton three years ago.

He graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1949, and the New England Institute of Mortuary Science in 1957.

He was employed by the Stanetsky Funeral Home in Brookline, Mass., before retiring in 1996. He was most recently employed by Century 21 in Bristol as a real estate agent.

He was an Air Force veteran, as well as a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, the Masonic Lodge, the Royal Arch chapter and the South Shore Commandery, all in Weymouth, Mass. He was also a member of the town house committee, the historical society and the planning board in Groton.

He was an avid gardener and antiques collector.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Aletha (Goss) Lewis of Groton; a daughter, Susan Harville of Germany; a son, Peter Lewis of Holliston, Mass.; his mother, Miriam Lensch of Hollywood, Fla.; three grandchildren; four sisters, Ellen Salerno, Roberta Hall and Martha Chase, all of Concord, and Sandra Cunningham of Connecticut; four brothers, Harry Lewis of Concord, Crosby Lewis and Scott Lewis, both of Fairbanks, Alaska, and William Lensch of Wisconsin; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held at the Mayhew Funeral Home in Plymouth. The Rev. John Fischer, pastor of the Union Congregational Church in Hebron, officiated.

After cremation, burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Lincoln.

Dorothy K. Sherman, BELLEAIR BLUFFS, Fla.

BELLEAIR BLUFFS, Fla. - Dorothy K. Sherman, 87, died Oct. 17 at home.

She was born in Homer-Cortland, N.Y., the daughter of Jessie (Baldwin) and Frank Scudder. She moved to Florida from Port Jervis, N.Y.

She was a volunteer ambulance driver during World War II, and was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Foresters of America, and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She volunteered at the St. Alban's Naval Hosptial and the Humane Society of New Jersey, and was a board member of Port Jervis and all New York state hospitals.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph; two daughters, Marilyn Debuc of Loudon, and Lois Hirt of Wappingers Falls, N.Y.; two sons, Frederick Krebs of Buffalo, N.Y., and Willis Krebs of North Babylon, N.Y.; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a twin sister, Doris Wheeler of Walden, N.Y.; and a brother, Willis Scudder of Port Jervis, Fla.

Memorial donations may be made to the Hospice of the Florida Suncoast, 300 East Bay Drive, Largo, Fla. 33770.

Funeral and interment arrangements are at convenience of the family.

Blanche Riley, MEREDITH

Tuesday, October 26, 1999

MEREDITH - Blanche Riley, 80, of Gould Avenue, died Saturday at Hospice House in Concord after a long illness.

She was born in Manchester, the daughter of Wright and Willa (Richards) Heald. She lived in Meredith for 18 years, moving here from Dunbarton.

She was a Girl Scout leader in Dunbarton. She also volunteered for the 4-H Country Kitchen in Hopkinton, helping staff the baked potato window, where she will be missed.

She was a waitress for various Manchester restaurants and worked for the New Hampshire Insurance Co. where she served in the executive dining room.

She was known for lending a helping hand to everyone. She volunteered her time organizing activities for seniors at Hillside Apartments. She also wrote for the Meredith Senior Center newsletter.

She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Riley, who died in 1983.

Family members include her daughter, Sylvia Grenier of Dunbarton, and several cousins.

A memorial service will be celebrated Sunday at 2 p.m. at Bethan Chapel, 54 Newbury Road (off Brown Avenue) in Manchester.

Memorial donations may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association in Meredith or Hospice House of Concord.

The Phaenuf Funeral Homes & Crematorium of Manchester is in charge of the arrangements.

Harold A. Wheeler, SPRINGFIELD
Wednesday, October 27, 1999
SPRINGFIELD - Harold A. Wheeler, 63, of Bowman Road, died yesterday at home.
He was born in New London, the son of Harold and Pearl (Stone) Wheeler. He had lived in Springfield for the past 30 years, moving there from New London.
He had been employed as a toolmaker for Sturm Ruger in Newport for 29 years before his retirement in 1998. He also served in the Navy from 1958 to 1959.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Betty (Smith) Wheeler of Springfield; two sons, Edward Wheeler of Woodstock, Ga., and Mason Wheeler of Springfield; three daughters, Holly Wheeler of Springfield, Donna Newton of Saratoga, Wyo., and Wendy Keyser of Springfield; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Guy Wheeler of Springfield, and Kneiland Wheeler of Croydon; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
There will be no calling hours.
Private graveside services will be held in Pleasant View Cemetery in Springfield.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Springfield FAST Squad, P.O. Box 121, Springfield 03284.

Edme V. Prive, ALLENSTOWN

Tuesday, October 26, 1999

ALLENSTOWN - Edme V. Prive, 65, died yesterday at Concord Hospital after a period of failing health.

He was born in Allenstown, the son of Derezinne Prive and Marie Prive Herneon.

He served for three years with the New Hampshire National Guard.

He had worked as a carpenter for Key-Loc Corp. and Pembroke Boat Co. He had also been employed by Beebe Shoe, Manchester Shoe Co. and Emerson Mills.

He was known for his love of animals and collection of key chains.

Survivors include his wife of almost 43 years, Grace (Gray) Prive; two sons, Raine Prive of Lawrence, Mass., and Edward Prive of Allenstown; a daughter, Pearl Labrie of Concord; four grandchildren; two sisters, Palma Reardon of Epsom and Palmire Rondeau of Allenstown; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held tomorrow from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Petit Funeral Home, 167 Main St., Pembroke.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Church in Allenstown. The Rev. C. Peter Dumont, pastor, will officiate.

Burial will take place in Holy Rosary Cemetery, Hooksett, at a later date.
