Donn Tibbetts

Donn Tibbetts, 67, of Manchester, died Friday after suffering a massive coronary.

Son of Joseph and Yvonne Tardiff Tibbetts, he was born in Manchester.

After attending St. Joseph High School in Manchester, he graduated from the LaSalle Military Academy in Oakdale, N.Y., in 1948. Tibbetts attended the University of New Hampshire, where he was freshman class president. He left college to become a radio broadcaster and in 1953 was the national president of the American Society of Disc Jockeys. The next year he became New England's pioneer television disc jockey on Channel 9 in Manchester.

Tibbetts's first professional radio broadcast was in February 1949 on WKBR, Manchester. He was subsequently heard on WTSV, Claremont and Hanover; WHDH, Boston; WKXL, Concord; and WFEA, Manchester.

Tibbetts joined WMUR radio and television in Manchester in 1954. WMUR radio was sold and became WGIR, where Tibbetts eventually served as news director and assistant general manager.

In 1972, Tibbetts joined the Union Leader. He was the State House bureau chief from 1974 until his retirement this year.

As dean of the State House press corps Tibbetts covered presidential primaries, state elections, the administrations of eight governors, sessions of the nation's largest state Legislature and state government.

In addition to daily news stories, Tibbetts wrote the "Under the State House Dome" column. From 1976 through 1992, he covered the Republican and Democratic National Conventions. The Union Leader's late publisher, William Loeb, nationally known for his frank assessments, called Tibbetts "a man of great integrity, who reports things as he sees them, without fear or bias."

After retiring from the Union Leader this year, Tibbetts joined the law firm of Rath, Young & Pignatelli, serving as their part-time government relations adviser. In addition, he was the editor of "Update 2000," the official library newsletter of New Hampshire's first-in-the-nation presidential primary, published by the state library.

Tibbetts was also a contributing writer for the annual Collier's Yearbook supplement to the Merit Students Encyclopedia. In 1991, he was a White House nominee to be an Institute of Politics Fellow at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government. Tibbetts was one of 4,000 nominees chosen for inclusion in the New Hampshire Notables publication.

He was voted a record nine times by his peers as New Hampshire Sportscaster, and was chosen as the first sportscaster ever to receive the New Hampshire Sportswriter and Sportscasters Distinguished Service Award. Tibbetts served as the national vice president and a member of the board of directors of the National Association of Sportswriters and Sportscasters and was a charter member of that group.

After 28 years of voluntary service with the U.S. Army Reserve and the New Hampshire Air National Guard, Tibbetts retired as a lieutenant colonel.

Tibbetts was awarded the International Toastmasters Eastern Regional Golden Gavel Award for public service. He served on the historic Pastoral Commission appointed by then Bishop Ernest Primeau. Tibbetts was a member and state chair of the federal Small Business Advisory Council for New Hampshire.

He was a member of the board of directors of the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce and the New Hampshire Lung Association. He was also a past state chairman of the Christmas Seals campaign. He was a life member of the Elliot Hospital Associates and a parishioner of the St. Joseph Cathedral.

Tibbetts is survived by his wife, Jane (Savage) Tibbetts; two sons, Donald Tibbetts and Gary Tibbetts, both of Manchester; two daughters, Amy Wilkinson of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Cindy McNally of Derry; seven grandchildren; twin great-granddaughters; a sister, Joanne Clement of Manchester; and a brother, Joseph Tibbetts.

Calling hours will be held at the Goodwin Funeral Home, 607 Chestnut St., corner of Harrison Street, tomorrow from 2 to 9 p.m.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Cathedral, corner of Pine and Lowell Streets.

Jacqueline S. Martin, PENACOOK

PENACOOK - Jacqueline S. Martin, 72, of Manor Road, Penacook died Saturday at Hospice House in Concord after a prolonged illness.
She was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin, the daughter of Verne F. and Estella G. "Hanson" Santas Sr. She lived in Penacook most of her life.
She was a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Penacook until its closing in 1987, and then became a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Concord. She was a past member of the Rebekah's.
She loved dancing, especially to the big band music of the 1940s.
She was a graduate of Penacook High School's Class of 1945 and especially enjoyed the class reunions. An avid reader, she loved history, nature, and especially her family.
She was predeceased by her husband of 45 years, Arnold Martin, in 1990. She is survived by a daughter, Julie Martin of Hooksett; a son, Stephen Martin of Chichester; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; a sister, Marjorie Readio of Dunbarton; two brothers, Verne Santas Jr. of Dunedin, Fla., and Gerald Santas of Penacook; a nephew, nieces and several cousins.
Private services will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Interment in Maple Grove Cemetery will be at the convenience of the family. Rector David Jones and Assistant Robert Dewitter will officiate.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in her name to Hospice House Concord Regional Visiting Nurse Association, 250 Pleasant Street, Concord, 03301. The Wendell J. Butt Funeral Home, 42 Washington Street, Penacook is in charge of the arrangements.

Viola Suojanen

Saturday, November 28, 1998

Viola Suojanen, 87, of North State Street, died Monday at Merrimack County Nursing Home, where she had lived for the past three years.

She was a first-generation American, born to Finnish parents, Frank and Mary (Karpo) Suojanen. Her father was part of the original crew of quarriers to cut granite in the Concord area.

She was a lifelong Concord resident, who worked as a professional seamstress and housekeeper.

Her private time was devoted to many handicrafts, including rug making, quilting, knitting, crocheting and embroidery.

She is survived by a nephew, Miles Suojanen of Florida and Concord; a niece, Sylvia Bailey of Bristol; and many great-nieces and great-nephews, including local residents Eric Suojanen of Concord, Joanne Bailey of Concord and Holly Suojanen of Hopkinton.

A service will be held tomorrow at 10 a.m. in Maple Grove Cemetery.

Boutwell, Hussey-Wiren and Wendell J. Butt Funeral Homes are in charge of the arrangements.

June H. Dearborn

Monday, November 30, 1998

June H. (Hines) Dearborn, 87, died Friday at Franklin Regional Hospital in Franklin.

The daughter of the late Charles and Clara (Sanders) Hines, she was born in Grafton and moved to Alexandria in 1927. She attended Grafton, Canaan and Franklin schools.

Dearborn was predeceased by her husband, Karl Dearborn. They lived in Tilton and Bristol. Dearborn was a homemaker and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. From 1987-97, she lived at the Peabody Home in Franklin. For the past year she had been a resident of the Merrimack County Nursing Home in Boscawen.

For 65 years, Dearborn was a member of the Alexandria, Bristol and New Hampton granges.

She was a longtime member of the Bristol Women's Club, including a four-year term as treasurer.

She was also a member of the Rural Letter Carriers Auxilliary.

She is survived by one son, Dennis Dearborn of Plymouth; and one granddaughter, Mitzi Dearborn.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Emmons Funeral Home, 115 S. Main St., Bristol.

The Rev. John Fischer, pastor of the Alexandria United Methodist Church will preside.

Interment will follow in Homeland Cemetery in Bristol. There are no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Bristol Fire Company, c/o John Bianchi, Treasurer, 85 Lake Street, Bristol 03222.

Margaret Mannion, WILMOT

Monday, November 30, 1998

WILMOT - Margaret Mannion, 88, of Pinnacle Road died Sunday at the Harborside-Northwood Healthcare Center in Bedford after a long illness with Alzheimer's Disease.

Mannion was born in County Galway, Ireland, the daughter of John and Bridget (Brennan) Donnellan. She spent her early years in Ireland and had lived for 55 years in the Bronx, N.Y. before moving to Wilmot in 1987.

Mannion had been active in various church groups for Our Lady of Solace in the Bronx and was a communicant at Our Lady of Fatima in New London.

Her husband, Martin Mannion, died in 1981.

Mannion is survived by three sons, Martin Mannion of Atlanta, Ga., John Mannion of Maywood, N.J. and William Mannion of Alton; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Bernard Donnellan of Ireland; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call at the Chadwick Funeral Home, 174 Main St., New London on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

A Mass of Christian burial will follow at 1 p.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Church in New London with the Rev. Richard Lower officiating. Burial will be in St. Raymond's Cemetery, Bronx, N.Y., on Dec. 7 at 1:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Kearsarge Good Day Respite Program, P.O. Box 1620, New London 03257, or to the Alzheimer's Association of Greater New Hampshire Chapter, 10 Ferry St., Concord 03301.

Eva Mae Silver, BOSCAWEN

Monday, November 30, 1998

BOSCAWEN - Eva Mae Silver, 87, of 170 Water St., died Sunday, Nov. 29 at Concord Hospital.

She was born in Northfield, the daughter of Benjamin and Eva Junie (Ingals) Holbrook.

Silver was a nurse's assistant working for McKerley's Harris Hill and the Merrimack County Nursing Homes. She was a member of the Boscawen Women's Club, Boscawen Congregational Church, Eve Church Group and the Boscawen Ladies Aid.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Harlie Silver; four daughters, Beatrice Bean, Dorothy Parkinson, Marguerite O'Keefe and Sandra Maynard, all of Boscawen; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Patricia Gorsky of Tarpon Springs, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

Private graveside services will be held at the Beaver Dam Cemetery, Boscawen at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Robert Yule , CANDIA

Tuesday, December 1, 1998

CANDIA - Robert Yule, 57, of North Road, died Saturday of a sudden illness.

He was born in Manhattan, N.Y., the son of James and Helen Yule.

He was the president of Energy North in Concord.

In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife, Marilyn Yule; a daughter, Bonnie Yule; and a brother, John Yule.

He was a deacon of the Congregational Church in Candia.

He and his wife maintained a shepherding home for children in transition for the past 14 years.

There are no calling hours.

A memorial service will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Congregational Church, Candia.

Louis W. Baker, WATERVILLE VALLEY

Tuesday, December 1, 1998

WATERVILLE VALLEY - Louis W. Baker, 74, of West Branch Turnpike, died Saturday at home.

He was born and raised in Indianola, Iowa. As a National Merit Scholar, he graduated from Harvard University with a bachelor of science degree in 1946.

He served in the Army Signal Corps during World War II.

He joined the international division of Eastman Kodak in 1950. Nineteen of his 30 years with Kodak were spent in Mexico, Panama, the Philippines and Brazil.

He was an avid skier, who retired to Waterville Valley in 1980.

He was a founding member of the Silver Streaks Ski Club, and was head streak for 10 years. He had also served on the Waterville Valley Planning Board and as town moderator.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Nancy (English) Baker of Waterville Valley; a son, Edward Baker of Merida, Mexico; two daughters, Christine Baker-Ruz of Mexico City and Betsy Baker of Boston; and one granddaughter.

A spring graveside service will be held in Waterville Valley Cemetery.

Donations may be made to Pemi Baker Home Health, Hospice Program, 258 Highland St., Plymouth 03264.

The Mayhew Funeral Home in Plymouth is in charge of arrangements.

Janet Gifford Dawson Garceau

Monday, November 30, 1998

Janet Gifford Dawson Garceau, 65, died on Friday at Franklin Hospital after a long illness.

Garceau was born in Laconia, the daughter of George and Viola (French). She graduated from Laconia High School in 1951.

Garceau was a lifelong resident of New Hampshire and had various secretarial positions, including one in the office of former Gov. Melvin Thompson.

She was also a member of the American Legion Post No. 21 and the VFW Auxiliary Post No. 1631 of Concord.

A dedicated wife and mother, Garceau leaves behind her husband, Walter; two sons, Ronald Dawson of Boscawen and David Dawson of Concord; and five grandchildren.

There are no calling hours and private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Affordable Funeral and Cremation Services of the Nutfield Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Jeannine Frost, LACONIA

Monday, November 30, 1998

LACONIA - Jeannine (Richard) Frost, 74, of 24 Gillette St., died Friday at home with her family.

She was born in St. Claude, Quebec, Canada, the daughter of Willie and Melina (Fortier) Richard. She had lived in Laconia since 1955. She attended Sanford, Maine schools, graduating from Sanford High School in 1944. She also graduated from Banford Academy of Hair Design in Malden, Mass.

Frost was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Laconia where she served as a Eucharistic minister for many years.

She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and St. Joseph's Ladies Guild.

She worked as a secretary at Memorial Middle School for 17 years, retiring from the Laconia school system. She also was a retired real estate agent in Laconia.

Frost was a self-employed teddy bear artist as well as an ardent teddy bear collector. She appeared on Channel 9 demonstrating her artistry.

She sold teddy bears across the United States, was juried through the New Hampshire League of Craftsmen and her teddy bears are on display at the Teddy Bear Museum in Naples, Fla.

Frost was a charter member of the Teddy Bear Makers of America.

She also volunteered hundreds of hours at St. Vincent de Paul Society Thrift Store and Food Pantry.

Frost is survived by her husband of 52 years, Richard Frost; four children, Helene Frost of Newington, Conn., Marsha Holliston of White Salmon, Wash., Denise Heath of Franklin and Timothy Frost of Derry; six grandchildren; two sisters, Alliette Canning of Laconia, Helene Greenfield of Cocoa Beach, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held tomorrow at Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home in Laconia from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, Dec. 2 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church by the Revs. Gary Kosmowski and Marc Drouin.

Burial will be at St. Ignatius Cemetery in Sanford, Maine, on Thursday at 11 a.m.

Donations may be made in her memory to St. Vincent de Paul, P.O. Box 6123, Lakeport 03246, or Community Health and Hospice of Lakes Region, 780 N. Main St., Laconia.
