John Webb Jr.

SANDWICH - John "Jack" L. Webb, Jr. died in his sleep Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, at Lakes Region General Hospital in Laconia after a very long illness. His daughter, Betsy, was at his side.

Jack was born on Aug. 14, 1926, son of Elizabeth (McGinnis) Webb and John L. Webb Sr. of Philadelphia. Upon his graduation from the Philadelphia public school system in 1944, he immediately enlisted in the Navy. He subsequently attended the University of Delaware and received a certificate in accounting from Pierce Business College. He put his newly acquired skills to work at Price Waterhouse before coming to New Hampshire in 1953. Initially settling in Meredith, he managed the business end of a mill until relocating to Sandwich in 1958.

Many people of Sandwich remember Jack first in the garage and then in the general store before joining the postal service initially as a rural mail deliverer and then as officer-in-charge in North Sandwich. In addition, he also prepared tax returns for town members.

Jack served the Town of Sandwich as a volunteer fireman, tax collector, and later as a selectman. He was also a trustee of trust funds for three terms. He was active in North Sandwich Friends Meeting (Quakers) as head of finance, treasurer and as meeting clerk for three years. He was also the clerk of the Falmouth Quarterly Meeting for three years.

On the lighter side, Jack enjoyed taking part in Gilbert & Sullivan productions and is best remembered as a little policeman in "The Pirates of Penzance." As one member of the relentless Lee and Jack bridge team, he was a player whose wily bridge playing was not to be lightly challenged. Although not overtly active in the play group run out of his home by his wife Lee, Jack’s gentle, masculine figure was an ever-present positive influence to the many children who were always welcome in the Webb residence.

Jack is survived by wife of 41 years, Eleanor "Lee"(Hall) Webb; two daughters, Betsy Webb of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, and Rivkah Moriah of Ephrat, Israel; two foster daughters, Joyce Mitchell of Claremont and Selina O’Brien of Goffstown; two brothers, Thomas Samuel Webb of Bend, Ore., and David M. Webb of Atlanta, Ga.; five grandsons and two granddaughters.

His nonjudgmental ways, nonthreatening demeanor and quiet strength were his trademarks. Jack, you will be missed. Jack, you are missed.

A service in Jack’s memory will be held on Sunday, Jan. 30, 2005 at 2 p.m. at the Friend’s Meetinghouse in North Sandwich. A reception will follow at the Webb’s home at 4 p.m. Donations may be made to Sandwich Caregivers or the charity of your choice.
