Rose Marcotte

DOVER - Rose George Marcotte, 89, widow of Joseph Marcotte and formerly of Browning Drive, died Thursday, June 14, 2001, at St. Ann Home.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover.

Donald Perkins, retired math professor, Nottingham official

NOTTINGHAM - Donald M. Perkins, 92, resident of Nottingham, died Tuesday, June 12, 2001 at Exeter Hospital after a short illness.

Born March 31, 1909, in Sunapee, he was the son of Edward S. Perkins and Pearl (Merrill) Perkins.

Mr. Perkins graduated from Sunapee High School and moved to Durham to attend the University of New Hampshire. He graduated summa cum laude, a member of Delta Chi fraternity in 1931, and earned his master’s degree in 1933. He was an instructor and professor of mathematics from 1931 until he retired in 1965.

Mr. Perkins was committed to his teaching career, family, friends and community service. He served on the Town of Nottingham School Board, Office of Selectmen, Zoning Board and Volunteer Fire Department. He was elected to the office of tax collector and served in that position for 33 years. He was a member of the State of N.H. Tax Collector’s Association, an advisor and served on many regional planning boards. He was a board member of the Strafford County Regional Planning Commission and served in the office of treasurer.

Mr. Perkins was an active member of the Mason’s Rising Star Lodge No. 47 in Newmarket. He enjoyed gardening (often remarking that we should take time to "smell the roses"), crafts, playing bridge, fishing, swimming, skating, current events and especially politics. He was an avid canoeist on Nottingham Lake Shores.

He is survived by his children, Madeline Witham of Nottingham, James Perkins of Homassa, Fla., Dorothy Lavoie of Nottingham, Donald Perkins II of Canton, Mass., Phyllis Hayward of Barrington and Myrna Cross of Newmarket; 21 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Norman Perkins of Sunapee; nieces, Norma Thomas, Natalie Lewis and nephew, William Perkins.

He was predeceased by his wife, Ethel M. (Palmer) Perkins, and grandson, Joey Harvey.

A family memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Town of Nottingham Fire and Rescue, c/o Gary Chase, Chief, Town of Nottingham, NH 03290.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Purdy Memorial Chapel, Route 4, 2 Concord Road, Lee.

Virginia Rouillard

FARMINGTON - Virginia Douglas Rouillard, 86, formerly of 4 Tappan Street, died Monday, June 11, 2001, at the Rochester Manor in Rochester after a period of failing health.

Mrs. Rouillard was born in Farmington on June 18, 1914, the daughter of Robert R. and Rena (Abbott) Douglas and was a life-long resident of Farmington. She was the widow of Walter Rouillard who died in 1987.

She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Farmington and a member of the church’s Women’s Club. She was formerly employed at Thomas Davenhall & Sons as a secretary/bookkeeper.

She is survived by one son, Douglas Hoadley of Newport News, Va.; three daughters, Mrs. Issac (Nancy J.) Blair II of Rochester, Mrs. Leslie (Marilyn) Chase of Milton, and Mrs. Richard (Judith) Thurston of Rochester; two sisters, Leah Douglas of Manheim, Pa., and Roberta Rogers of Rochester; one brother, Robert R. Douglas Jr. of Farmington; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no calling hours.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 18, at Pine Grove Cemetery in Farmington.

Arrangements are under the direction of the H. J. Grondin & Son Funeral Home, 177 North Main Street, Rochester.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the Rochester Rural District VNA, 178 Farmington Road, Rochester, NH 03867.

Bette Thibeault

GREENLAND - Bette Thibeault, 61, of 3 Sanderson Avenue died Tuesday, June 12, 2001, at her home.

She was born in Quincy, Mass., on May 29, 1940, the daughter of Albert L. and Ruth (Jordan) Taylor. Bette was a graduate of Braintree High School, Class of 1958, and was a member of the St. Thomas More Color Guard-Braintree Drum and Bugle Corp.

She married in November 1958 and moved to Portsmouth in 1962.

She was proprietor of the former Grove Grocery on Sagamore Avenue in Portsmouth for many years. She was formerly employed at Pic-N-Pay in Portsmouth, the Portsmouth High School Special Education Department and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a plastic fabricator.

For the last five years, she was employed as a custodian at Portsmouth High School where she was loved by all who knew her. On June 12, 2001, she was awarded the Peace Award at Portsmouth High School. Sandy White led Bette’s grandchildren and great-granddaughter onto the stage to receive the award for their grandmother.

Survivors include one son, David W. Thibeault Jr. and wife, Robin of Portsmouth; three daughters, Jeannette Leon of Somersworth, Gail Thibeault of Greenland and Kim Thibeault of Manchester; nine grandchildren, Patrick, Amy, Joshua, Jillian, Jamie, Kyle, Megan, Zackary and Samantha; one great-granddaughter, Kyana; a sister, Barbara J. Kelly of Quincy; a daughter-in-law, Lisa; several nieces and nephews; and her longtime friends, Sandy White, Kay Abbott and Wimpy and Alice Wentworth.

She was predeceased by her son Glenn A. Thibeault on Sept. 24, 1993.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. James Church, Lafayette Road, Portsmouth, on Monday, June 18, at 10:30 a.m. Friends invited.

Visiting hours will be held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad Street, Portsmouth, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 01933 or Bette J. Thibeault Scholarship Fund, c/o Portsmouth High School, 50 Alumni Drive, Portsmouth, NH 03801-5474.

Roberta Cobb

DOVER - Roberta J. Cobb, 69, of 29 Pleasant Valley died Thursday, June 14, 2001, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.

Born Jan. 13, 1932, in Cornish, Maine, she was the daughter of Harold Elon and Edna Isabelle (Doherty) Day.

A mother and homemaker, she was employed by the Dover School Department as a cafeteria worker for nearly 20 years and retired in 1991. A resident of Dover for over 35 years, she enjoyed knitting, sewing, gardening, bingo and playing cards. She was a great hockey grandmother, active supporter of athletics, especially Dover youth and Dover High School hockey.

Roberta is survived by her husband of 49 years, Chester Cobb, of Dover; one son, Chuck Cobb and his wife, Sally of Dover; four daughters, Mrs. Stephanie Behan and her husband, William, of Dover, Mrs. Pamela Constance and her husband, Robert, of Somersworth, Mrs. Patricia Fortier Minier and her husband, Brian, of Dover and Janice Cobb of Dover; eight grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Gustie Cooledge and Virginia Day, both of Cornish, Maine; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, Edward E. and Lester F. Day.

Friends and relatives may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, June 17, 2001, at the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Avenue with funeral services being held today at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Earle Custer, of St. John’s United Methodist Church, officiating.Burial will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to; American Cancer Society, American Heart Fund or to the charity of one’s choice.

Beatrice Perreault

ROCHESTER - Beatrice Perreault, 76, of 3 Quail Drive died at her residence Saturday, June 16, 2001.

Born Oct. 7, 1924, in Lewiston, Maine, she was the daughter of Henry and Helen (Dalton) Brousseau. She was a graduate of Portsmouth High School and attended McIntosh College. She was a resident of Rochester for the last nine years, and was a former resident of Rollinsford.

Mrs. Perreault was employed as a key punch operator at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and Pease Air Force Base as a civil service employee. During the last 12 years she was employed at The Homemakers of Strafford County.

She enjoyed gardening, floral arranging and was an active employee and volunteer at The Homemakers of Strafford County.

Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Fernand Perreault; one son, Raymond J. Perreault of Barrington; three grandchildren, Rachel Perreault, Gabriel Perreault and Daniel Perreault, all of Barrington.

Friends and relatives may call Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave., Dover. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Homemakers of Strafford County, 215 Rochester Hill Road, Rochester, NH 03867-1701.

Service for Nancy Seagren

NEW CASTLE - Nancy J. Seagren of 19 Walbach St., New Castle, died May 25, 2001.

A memorial service (celebration of life) will be held Tuesday, June 19, at 9 a.m. in the Bethany Church, 500 Breakfast Hill Road, Greenland.

It is her wish that donations in lieu of flowers be made to the Nancy J. Seagren Fund, to benefit her charitable interest in the seacoast, including services for children and animals.

Such donations should be directed to the Greater Piscataqua Community Foundation, 446 Market St., Portsmouth, NH 03801. Assistance with the arrangements was by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Robert Shaw Sr.

SPRINGVALE, Maine - Robert Stanley Shaw Sr., 75, of 8 Lucerne Street, died Friday, June 15, 2001, at Goodall Hospital in Sanford following several months of declining health.

He was born in Springvale, January 15, 1926, a son of Wilbur G. and Florence (Stanley) Shaw, and had lived in Sanford and Springvale all his life. He attended local schools and graduated from Sanford High School in 1944.

Mr. Shaw enlisted in the Army Air Force in World War II and served state side. He returned to Sanford in 1946 and began working for his father at Wilbur G. Shaw Hardware. He married Jacqueline A. Goodrich on June 15, 1947.

Even though he was ill, the first thing he said to Jackie the morning of his death was "Happy Anniversary" on their 54th anniversary. He became the owner of the hardware store in 1982 and retired in 1995 after 50 years in the business.

He earned the industry’s Golden Hammer award. He served on the board of directors and was past president of the New England Hardware Dealers Association. He served as a director at Sanford Institution for Savings. He was a member and former trustee of the Shapleigh First Baptist Church, and was a former member of the First Baptist Church of Springvale.

Mr. Shaw was a former volunteer and treasure for 25 years of the Sanford Call Firefighters and was a 50 year member of Preble Lodge, AF & AM of Sanford.

He is survived by his wife, Jackie, of Springvale: two sons, Stephen of Sanford and Robert S. Shaw Jr. of Leominster, Mass.; a daughter, Pamela Bors of Alfred; two sisters, Barbara Glidden of Brandywine, Md., and Jacqueline Walker of Madison, Ohio; and five grandchildren.

Relatives and friends may gather from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on today at the Heald Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. on Tuesday at the First Baptist Church of Springvale. The Rev. Les Dorr of Shapleigh will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Kenneth Keating.

A gathering for fellowship and refreshments will follow in the church vestry. Private interment will be in Oakdale Cemetery, Sanford.

For those who desire, memorial contributions in Mr. Shaw’s name may be made to the Shapleigh First Baptist Church, P. O. Box 284, Shapleigh, ME 04076.

Winnie Welch

DURHAM - Winnie Chamberlin Welch, 98, formerly of 38 Madbury Road, died Saturday, June 16, 2001 at St. Ann Home in Dover.

Born in Wolfeboro, June 4, 1903, she was the daughter of Ivan G. and Annie L. (MacDonald) Chamberlin. She was a graduate of Brewster Academy, class of 1920, and attended Keene State College.

Mrs. Welch was a cashier, employed by the University of New Hampshire for over 20 years, retiring in 1974.

She was a member of the Durham Community Church.

Her involvement in civic organizations included the James Farrington Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, Pomona Grange, Jeremiah Smith Grange of Lee, Durham Woman’s’ Club and the Durham Business and Professional Women’s Club. She was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels in earlier years.

She was predeceased by her husband, Peter P. Welch, in 1956 and by a son, Charles I. White, who died Nov. 11, 2000 and by a grandson, Gregory Dugal.

Family members include two daughters, Eleanor L. Dugal-Colby of Dover and Marcia A. DiMambro of Dover; six grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

There will be no calling hours. Private graveside services will be conducted at the convenience of the family.

Rena Hecker

RYE - Mrs. Rena (Baum) Hecker, 97, widow of Albert Hecker of 13 Oceanview Ave., passed away on Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

She was born in Clinton, Mass., on May 30, 1904, the daughter of Bruno and Catherine (Purucker) Baum.

Mrs. Hecker was formerly employed as an office manager for the Internal Revenue Service.

She was a member of the Third Friday Club and the Rye Over 55 Club, both of Rye.

Survivors include her nieces and nephews, JoAnn Baum Price of Berkeley, Calif., David A. Baum of Davis, Calif., Beverly Williams of Charlotte, N.C., Madeline Kirste of Portsmouth, Richard Von Schwedler of Tannersville, Pa., Eric Orris of Dennisville, N.J., Roberta Lanni of Rye, Donald Frost, Kenneth Frost, Janet Vorgiotti, Ingrid Pando, Helene Czap, and Walter Baum; many great-nephews and great-nieces; and a sister-in-law, Edna Larsen.

A memorial service will be held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home, Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth on Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at 10 a.m. Friends are invited. There will be no visiting hours. Flowers will be accepted.

Amy Anetta Lambert

CONCORD - Amy Anetta (Campbell) Lambert, 90, died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, at Havenwood Nursing Home in Concord.

She was born in Long River, Prince Edward Island, Canada, the daughter of George C. and Mary Ella (Johnstone) Campbell.

She was a registered nurse at Swampscott, Mass., High School for more than 26 years.

Mrs. Lambert was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Swampscott and loved youth organizations.

She is survived by a son, Fred Burk of Newry, Maine; a daughter, Janet Glaster of Virginia Beach, Va.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three stepsons, Clark Lambert of Hollis, Mass., Steven Lambert of Lancaster, Mass., and Roger Lambert of Acton, Mass.; and two sisters, Maude McNeil and Georgie McLeod, both of Prince Edward Island, Canada.

She was predeceased by two husbands, Frederick C. Burk, who died in 1967 and Jack Lambert, who died in 1998, and a granddaughter, Heidi Burk, who died in 1984.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001, at 1 p.m. at Havenwood Nursing Home. Burial will be in Swampscott Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Havenwood-Heritage Heights Endowment Fund, 33 Christina Ave., Concord, N.H. 03301.

The Bennett Funeral Home, Concord, is in charge of arrangements.

Robert LeBlanc, retired UNH professor, killed in attacks

LEE - Robert G. LeBlanc, professor emeritus of geography at the University of New Hampshire, died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, aboard a hijacked commercial airliner that crashed into the World Trade Center.

LeBlanc, 70, lived in Lee with his wife, Andrea.

Born in Nashua, he was the son of Lea and John LeBlanc.

A veteran of the Korean War, LeBlanc served in the U.S. Air Force from 1949-53. He then earned his bachelor of arts degree at UNH, studied at the University of Oslo and at the University College, University of London, and completed his master’s degree and doctorate in geography at the University of Minnesota.

Professor LeBlanc, a cultural geographer, began his career at UNH in 1963 and served with distinction until his retirement in 1999. He served as acting chairman and chairman of the department for nearly 10 years.

He was a scholar in Canadian studies, studying Acadian migration and Franco-American communities in New England mill towns. His insatiable curiosity about people and other cultures inspired him to travel the world over. He returned to share his experiences with the community and the hundreds of students he taught during his career.

He was honored as a Whiting Foundation Fellow in 1983, received the Distinguished Service Award of the New England-St. Lawrence Valley Geographical Society in 1988 and participated in the New Hampshire Council for the Humanities Franco-American Project, the New Hampshire Council for Canadian Studies and served as incorporator of the Franco-American Center of Manchester. Professor LeBlanc was the founder of the Eastern Historical Geography Association.

In addition to his wife, family members include three sons, John LeBlanc of San Francisco, Calif., Paul LeBlanc of Portsmouth and Kjell Youngren of Redmond, Ore.; two daughters, Carolyn LeBlanc of Lee and Nissa Youngren of Rochester, N.Y.; two grandsons, Robert Reed and Kai Youngren; his former wife, Solveig of Portsmouth; a sister, Claire of Nashua; and a brother, Edward, and his wife and family of Norwood, Mass.

In lieu of flowers, family members request that donations be made to the Robert G. LeBlanc Memorial Fund at the UNH Foundation, 9 Edgewood Road, Durham, N.H. 03824. The fund will be used to establish a scholarship for students of French-Canadian descent.

A memorial service will be held Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, on the UNH campus at a time and location to be announced.
