New Hampshire, U.S., Marriage and Divorce Records, 1659-1947

Richard Hastey

PORTSMOUTH - Richard M. "Reech" Hastey, 51, of Concord Way, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

He was born in Las Cruces, N.M., on July 24, 1950, the son of Jane N. (Lewellen) Borr of New Mexico and the late Russell Borr.

Richard had worked for Hess Oil in Alaska, was currently employed by Tyco Telecommunications as a yardman and was a sternman on a lobster boat.

He was an avid Harley Davidson bike rider, enjoyed the fellowship at the Golden Memories Call Club, had a loyal devotion to his friends and associates, enjoyed whitewater rafting, was a tough Texan, and had a love for his dog, Casha.

Besides his mother of New Mexico, survivors include two sons, Timothy James Hastey and Richard Hastey Jr.; brothers in proxy, Paul Brown and Terry Dyer; brothers in spirit, Dan Bedee and Craig Casavant; and sisters in spirit, Gail Smith and Susie Casavant.

At his request, private services will be held at the convenience of the family and friends. Arrangements are under the direction of the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel.

Michael Frampton

ST. MARY’S, Ga. - Mr. Michael V. Frampton, 56, of 403 Fairfield Court, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at the Shades Jacksonville Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla.

He was born in Portsmouth, N.H., Apr. 7, 1945, the son of Katherine E. (Hutchinson) Frampton of New Castle, N.H., and the late Harold Frampton.

Mr. Frampton was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1963, and went on to serve in the U. S. Army from 1963-1967.

He was currently employed as a supervisor at the Kings Bay Naval Base in Kings Bay, Ga.

Mr. Frampton’s passion was instructing boys in the sport of boxing and he was an avid hunter.

Survivors include his loving wife, Roberta (White) Frampton, of St. Mary’s, Ga.; his mother of New Castle, N.H.; a son, Michael J. Frampton of Lebanon, Maine; two grandchildren; three brothers, Damon Frampton of Winterhaven, Fla., Jeffry Frampton of Newfields, N.H., and Mark Frampton of Rockland, Maine; a sister, Linda Fernald of York, Maine; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, N.H., on Wednesday at 2 p.m. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be held at the chapel on Tuesday, 6-8 p.m. Flowers will be accepted or donations in Michael’s memory may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Francis O’Grady

STRAFFORD - Francis J. O’Grady, 84, of Northwood Road, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at the Sunbridge Nursing Home, Rochester.

He was born in New Bedford, Mass., the son of Stephen and Margaret (Robinson) O’Grady.

He has lived in Strafford for the past 20 years. He was employed as a material handler for the Aervox Company in New Bedford.

His hobbies included attending fairs and sports of all kinds.

He is survived by a sister, Rita M. Kerivan of Strafford; a brother, Stephen T. O’Grady of Strafford; four nephews, William S. Kerivan, James F. Kerivan, Richard G. Kerivan and Michael J. Kerivan; one niece, Sheila M. Hamilton; 14 grandnieces and nephews; and three great-grandnieces.

Visiting hours will be held Tuesday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the Perkins Funeral Home, 60 Main St., Pittsfield.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Pittsfield. The Rev. Georges de Laire, pastor, will be the celebrant. Burial will be in the Mount Calvary Cemetery, Pittsfield. Jessica Genest is the funeral director in charge of arrangements.

Laura Gilbert Beland

FOXBORO, Mass. - Laura Gilbert Beland, 92, of 9 Palmer Road, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at Caritas-Norwood Hospital.

She was born in Rochester, N.H., on Oct. 31, 1909, the daughter of Alfred and Anna (Rodier) Gilbert, one of 11 children. She lived most of her life in the Rochester area, until recent years when she moved to Foxboro to be with her daughter and family.

Mrs. Beland loved to talk on the phone, which suited her well with a 30-year career as a telephone operator with AT&T, at the Rochester office. She also worked for about 10 years with the Rochester School Department lunch program. She was a member of Holy Rosary Church for many years, as well as a member of Ste. Anne’s Sodality and the Telephone Pioneers of America. She had enjoyed traveling with the area senior citizens group over the years.

Laura was dearly loved, and will be sorely missed by her many family members and friends.

She was predeceased by her husband of over 64 years, William Beland, who died in September 2000, and by a daughter, Rachael DeLeo of East Hartford, Conn. She was also predeceased by four brothers and four sisters.

Surviving family members include her devoted daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Richard Cordella of Foxboro, Mass.; grandchildren, Dr. James DeLeo IV of Manchester, N.H., Deborah DeLeo of Hoboken, N.J., Richard Cordella Jr. of Watertown, Mass., and Alison Cordella of Foxboro, Mass; her sisters, Rita Scala of East Boston, Mass., and Lucille Lachance of Rochester, N.H.

Family members and friends may call on Monday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at H.J. Grondin & Son Funeral Home, 177 North Main St., Rochester, N.H. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Rosary Church, Rochester. Burial will be held this spring at Holy Rosary Cemetery, Rochester.

Irene Cavaretta

DOVER - Irene B. Cavaretta, 82, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at Riverside Rest Home, where she had been a resident since 1994. She had previously resided in Rye and Rochester for many years.

She was born in Kittery, Maine, on Dec. 27, 1919, the daughter of Herbert and Sadie (Woodward) Brooks. She was one of 12 siblings in the family.

Mrs. Cavaretta and her late husband owned and operated a pizza restaurant in Rye for many years.

She was predeceased by her husband, Anthony Cavaretta, in 1989, and by a daughter, Sandra L. Acton, in 1971.

Surviving family members include two sons, George McCombe of Beverly, Mass., and Glenn E. McCombe of Hawaii; a brother, John P. Brooks of Alton; four sisters, Muriel Barnaby of Portsmouth, Anne Avery of Kittery, Maine, Janet Still of Hampton, and Ruth Slonski of Connecticut; nine grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

A private family service will be held at a later date. Memorial donations in her memory may be sent to the Riverside Rest Home, 276 County Farm Road, Dover, NH 03820, c/o the activities fund. Arrangements are by H.J. Grondin & Son Funeral & Cremation Services, 177 North Main St., Rochester.

Claire Blake

NEWMARKET - Claire H. Blake, 74, of 9 Grant Road, formerly of 911 Camelot, Sherwood Forest, Exeter, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at The Pines of Newmarket.

She was born in Haverhill, Mass., on Apr. 7, 1927, the daughter of the late Frank and Anna (Willy) Howard.

Mrs. Blake graduated from Groveland High School. She worked at Winnacunnet High School in Hampton for many years in the Food Service Program. She resided in Exeter for 15 years, coming from Hampton.

Mrs. Blake was an active member in the Mother’s Circle of Hampton, and she enjoyed playing cards and traveling.

She was the wife of Philip N. Blake, who died in 1997.

Family members include two daughters, Pamela J. Clark and her husband Kenneth of Greenland, and JoAnn Bertrand and her husband David of Venice, Fla.; four grandchildren; one great-grandson; one sister, Jean Barbone of Groveland, Mass.; one niece and one nephew.

Services will be held at The Pines of Newmarket, 9 Grant Road, Newmarket, on Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at 1 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833, or the Clair Blake Scholarship Fund, c/o The Pines of Newmarket, 9 Grant Road, Newmarket, NH 03857. Private burial was held in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton. Assistance with arrangements was by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home - Crematory, Hampton.

Alec Hashem
MANCHESTER - Alec Hashem, 80, of Manchester, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at his residence following a long illness.

Born in Dover, he was the son of Peter and Maria Hashem. He was educated in the Dover school system.

Mr. Hashem was employed by the State of New Hampshire. He had lived in Manchester for the past 55 years.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a communicant of St. Joseph Cathedral Parish.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Deta (Spiro) Hashem of Manchester; one son, Thomas P. Hashem of Auburn; one daughter, Debbie L. Hashem of Manchester; two grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held today from 4 to 8 p.m. at McHugh Funeral Home, 483 Beech St., (corner of Hanover Street).

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 9 a.m. at the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Cathedral.

Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery, Manchester.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Sisters of the Precious Blood, 700 Bridge St., Manchester, NH 03104.

Mary Jordan

EXETER - Mary E. Jordan, 82, of Oakland Road, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at Exeter Hospital.

Born Dec. 10, 1919, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of Clarence H. and Bertha (Ware) Rumford.

She resided in Newfields prior to moving to Exeter in 1969.

She was a veteran of World War II serving the U.S. Women’s Army Corps. She was a member of the Epping American Legion Post 51.

She was a graduate of Robinson Female Seminary in Exeter.

She held a real estate license and was office manager for many years at Harris Real Estate in Hampton Beach.

She is survived by her husband of almost 56 years, John O. Jordan Jr. of Exeter; two sons, Robert E. Jordan and his wife, Susan of Newmarket, and John O. Jordan III and his wife, Dianne of Hampton; a former daughter-in-law, Linda J. Jordan of Portsmouth; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Jared Rumford Sr. of Newfields; several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Nancy Matthews, in 2001.

There are no calling hours.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter Street, Newmarket.

Burial will be at Locust Grove Cemetery, Newfields.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Exeter Hospital Special Care Unit, 10 Buzzell Ave., Exeter, NH 03833.

Marjorie Ross

NEW DURHAM - Marjorie A. Ross, 84, of 44 Ham Road, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at the Rochester Manor.

She was born March 12, 1917, in Lynn, Mass., the daughter of William and Maude (Curtain) Kirwin. She resided in Lynn most of her life and worked in several leather and shoe shops. She enjoyed spending time with her family.

She was predeceased by her husband, Lloyd G. Ross.

She is survived by three sons, William A. Berg of Michigan, Robert Berg Jr. of New Durham and Dennis P. Berg of Milton; a stepdaughter, Mary McCarthy of Lynn; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a sister, Murial Nicholas of Portland, Maine; several nieces and nephews.

There will be no calling hours.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., Rochester, with the Rev. Fred Leslie officiating.

Gregory Bailey
SOMERSWORTH - Gregory McCrea Bailey, 50, of Somersworth, passed away unexpectedly, Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover.

He was born in New York City on Aug. 17, 1951, the son of Wilbur and Ann Bailey.

Mr. Bailey was trained as an operating room technician while in the Air National Guard, and worked for the Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vt. He also worked for Velan Valve in Williston, Vt.

The family moved to New Hampshire in 1984 and Greg worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as an inspector for several years. He later went back to school and graduated from the Thompson School at UNH in 1995, with an associate's degree in food service management.

Mr. Bailey worked for several summer camps and the Somersworth Head Start Program as chef and kitchen manager.

He was actively involved in his community as member of the Somersworth Library Board of Trustees, the Somersworth Conservation Commission, and the First Parish United Church of Christ, where he sang in the choir. He was a lover of all kinds of music, especially jazz and the blues, and liked to play the guitar. He also pursued his hobby of short wave radio listening for many years, was a cat lover and an avid reader of fantasy books.

He was a wonderful father and husband who enjoyed cooking for his family and participating in many aspects of their lives. He will be missed by many.

Mr. Bailey is survived by his wife of 22 years, Barbara, daughters Roslynn, Shauna, and Whitney of Somersworth, sister Wilma Bailey of Indiana, sister Linda Hull of Manitoba, Canada, brother Ted Larkin of Massachusetts, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at First Parish United Church of Christ, 176 West High Street, Somersworth, at 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 18.

Friends may greet the family at a reception following the service in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the Somersworth Public Library.

Richard Bishop

ROCHESTER - Richard C. Bishop, 53, of 271 Salmon Falls Road, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at his home after a brief illness.

He was born on June 1, 1948, in Rochester, the son of Ruby (Reagan) McCarthy of Rochester and the late Richard C. Bishop Sr. of Lynn, Mass.

A long-time resident of Rochester, he was employed by Tyco of Newington. He loved fishing, spending time with family and friends, and will be sadly missed.

Besides his mother, he is survived by his wife of 18 years, Sung Suk; two children, Benjamin and Haley both of Massachusetts; three brothers, Wayne Bishop of Rochester, Raymond Bishop of Strafford, and Mike McCarthy of Farmington; five sisters, Helen Jacques of Farmington, Theresa Gauthier of Rochester, Judy Dixon of Austin, Texas, Janette Sisco of Milton and Mary Atkinson of Wakefield, along with several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements for a memorial service are incomplete and will be announced by the family at a later date.
