George Donnell

YORK, Maine - George K. Donnell, 76, of 110 Scituate Road, York, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, at York Hospital.

He was born on Dec. 30, 1925, in York, the son of Raymond and Blanche (Rowe) Donnell. He was a 1943 graduate of York High School and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Mr. Donnell worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Public Works Department as an electrician, planner and estimator in Shop 07.

He was a member of the Second Christian Congregational Church of Kittery and a member of Naval Masonic Lodge of Kittery.

He enjoyed gardening and was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Mr. Donnell was predeceased by his wife, Janet (MacKenzie) Donnell who died in 1993, and by his brother, Robert Donnell.

Survivors include one son Charles W. Donnell and his wife, Nadine, of York; one daughter, Laura J. Donnell and her husband, Kevin Ouellette, of Rye, N.H.; one brother, Richard Brooks of York Beach; and four grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. Masonic services by Naval Lodge will be held on Thursday at 5:45 p.m. at the funeral home.

Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday in the Second Christian Congregational Church, 33 Government St., Kittery.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association of Maine, 128 Sewall St., Augusta, ME 04330.

Eugene Gibbs

ROCHESTER - Eugene C. Gibbs, 78, of 55 Highland St., East Rochester, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, at the SunBridge Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center after a long illness.

Born Nov. 10, 1923, in Pittsfield, Maine, he was the son of Clifton and Eunice (Skipton) Gibbs.

Mr. Gibbs has lived in Rochester most of his life. He was a self-employed carpenter and later worked at Lydall and retired in 1992. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was a member of the Grace Baptist Church in East Rochester. He enjoyed gardening.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Marjorie (Dunton) Gibbs of East Rochester; his sister, Elaine Crawford of Wakefield; his cousins, Allan Hodgkins of Rochester, Milton Gibbs of South Windsor, Conn., Stanley Gibbs of Pittsfield and Joyce Meservey of Old Town, Maine; and nieces and nephews.

Flowers are accepted but donations in his memory maybe made to the Grace Baptist Church, 23 Main St., East Rochester, NH 03867.

A calling hour will be held Wednesday from 1 to 2 p.m. with funeral services at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., Rochester, with the Rev. William Powell officiating.

Burial will be in the Village Cemetery, Pittsfield, in the spring.

Armand Laliberte

ROLLINSFORD - Armand Rene Laliberte, 69, of 55 Old Mill Lane, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, at his home.

Born in Nashua, he was the son of Raoul and Clothilde (Roy) Laliberte.

He was a graduate of Assumption Prep of Worcester, the University of New Hampshire and the University of Pennsylvania.

Prior to his retirement, he was an engineer with Raytheon Corporation in Andover.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War and served on the Town of Rollinsford Planning Board, Budget Committee and as Trustee of Trust Funds.

He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church, Dover.

He is survived by his wife, Joan (Murphy) Laliberte; three daughters, Michele Kwasnick and her husband, Robert, of Palo Alto, Calif., Marie-Claire Behar and her husband, Izi of Seattle, Wash., and Miriam Laliberte of Somerville, Mass.; a son, Marc Laliberte of Dover; five grandchildren; four sisters, Theresa Duchesneau and her husband, Albert, of Pembroke Pines, Fla., Raymonde Doucet and her husband, John, of Nashua, Madeleine Beaulieu and her husband, Elphege, of Bristol, and Margaret Fraser and her husband, Raymond, of Portsmouth; a brother, George Laliberte of Mashpee, Mass.; nieces and nephews.

Friends and relatives are invited to call Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Church, corner of Chestnut and Third Streets, Dover, with the Rev. Fritz Cerullo, OSA, pastor, as celebrant.

Burial will be in New Town Cemetery, Rollinsford, in the spring. Memorials in his name may be made to Seacoast Hospice Care, 662 Central Ave., Dover, NH 03820.

Ruth McCarter

NEWBURYPORT, Mass. - Ruth J. McCarter, 93, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at Brigham Manor Nursing Facility in Newburyport.

Born Jan. 6, 1909, in Topsham, she was the daughter of Arthur and Angela Johnson.

She lived in Hanover, N.H., Quincy and Woburn.

A violin teacher, she played first violin in the Handel Society Orchestra at Dartmouth College. She was an avid golfer, she won the Ladies Championship at the Hanover County Club in 1950 and 1951.

She is survived by two children, Joanna M. Cowperthwaite of Dover, N.H., and William H. McCarter Jr. of Winchester; six grandchildren, Margaret Bridge of Watertown, Catherine Bledsoe of Barrington, R.I., William Christopher Cowperthwaite of Dover, Mass., Susan McCarter of Alexandria, Va., Meredith McCarter of Baltimore, Md., and Thomas McCarter of Somerville; seven great-grandchildren; her sister, Mary Butler of Brunswick, Maine; several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, William H. McCarter, who died in 1959 and a grandson, William McCarter.

A memorial service at the Winchester Congregational Church in Winchester will be held a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dartmouth College Hopkins Center, Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH 03755.

Arrangements are by Elliott, Woodworth & Rogers Funeral Home, 35 Green St., Newburyport.

Anna Merriwether

BARNSTEAD - Anna Margaret (Costello) Merriwether, 71, of 1416 Suncook Valley Road, Barnstead, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, at Huggins Hospital Wolfeboro.

Born in Newport, R.I., on June 13, 1930, she was the daughter of John and Martha (Lindh) Costello. She was the wife of Glenn Merriwether of Barnstead.

Mrs. Merriwether, prior to moving to New Hampshire, worked at the Commissary on the Newport (R.I.) Naval Base. She was a member of the Free Will Baptist Church in New Durham. She was a treasurer at the church. She was a former member of the Calvary Methodist Church on Annadale Road.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, W. Brian Beachum of Wyckoff, N.J.; three daughters, M. Susan Blackman of Rockville, Md., Nancy Beachum of Arlington, Va., and Dawn Beachum of Barnstead; her brother, William Costello of Newport; two sisters, Joan Bautista of Portsmouth, R.I., and Pauline Seibens of Newport; and five grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, John W. Beachum; and sisters, Nancy Silvia and Mae Clark.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Calvary United Methodist Church, Turner and Wyatt Roads, Middletown.

Burial will be in Middletown Cemetery, Middletown.

There will be a memorial service Sunday at 6 p.m. at the Free Will Baptist Church, New Durham.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association & Related Disorders, 919 N. Michigan Ave., Suite 1000, Chicago, IL 60611.

Arrangements are by the Hambly Funeral Home, "Brick House," 30 Red Cross Ave., Newport.

Alfred Patch

ROCHESTER - Alfred G. Patch, 78, of 10 Gina Dr., died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, at his home after a sudden illness.

Born March 4, 1923, in Acton, Maine, he was the son of George and Margaret (O’Connor) Patch.

Mr. Patch has lived in Rochester for the past 35 years after moving from Milton. He worked for the Milton Leather Board.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion Post 7 in Rochester.

He enjoyed having coffee with all his friends at Dunkin Donuts and after with his daughter, Dixie, at the Jiffy Diner. He was a loving father.

He is survived by his daughters, Dixie Chenette of East Rochester and Geraldine Whitney of Rochester; his sons, John Patch of Derry and Alan Patch of Barrington; many grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and his girlfriend, Lucy Smart of Rochester.

He was predeceased by his wife, Louise (Wilcox) Patch, and a son, Robert Patch.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., Rochester.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. in the chapel of the funeral home.

Burial will be in the Rochester Cemetery in the spring.

Lawrence Smith

KENNEBUNK, Maine Lawrence S. Smith, 76, of Kennebunk died Jan. 11, 2002, in Kennebunk. He was born Feb. 14, 1925, in Columbus, Ohio.

He served his country with valor in the skies over Europe during World War II. He flew countless people to their destinations for 33 years as an airline pilot with a flawless safety record.

He was loved by many whom he loved deeply in return.

Mr. Smith owned the Kennebunk Gallery in Lower Village, a labor of love and a shrine to art and beauty.

Services will be held privately in New York and Kennebunk.

Linwood Wyman

BERWICK, Maine - Linwood S. Wyman, 83, a resident of School Street, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover after a long illness.

He was born March 11, 1918, in South Berwick, a son of Alfred B. and Leah P. Walker Wyman.

He is a graduate of Berwick Academy, Class of 1936, and the University of New Hampshire, Class of 1940.

In October 1942, Mr. Wyman entered the U.S. Army Air Corps. After earning his wings in November 1944, he was assigned to the 337th bomb squadron in Grenow, Scotland. On Feb. 3, 1944, on his ninth bombing mission, he was shot down over Berlin and was a prisoner of war until his camp was liberated by Patton’s tanks on April 29, 1945.

After his discharge, he was briefly employed by the U.S. Government, then Pratt-Whitney in Hartford, Conn. Most recently, he was employed by Kidder Press in Dover, N.H., and then Kidder Stacey in Agawam, Mass., as a sales engineer of printing equipment.

Mr. Wyman was a 53-year member of the St. John’s Lodge of Masons in South Berwick, Sarah Orne Jewett Chapter O.E.S. and a member of several veterans’ groups including the Berwick American Legion, American Ex-POW’s, the Grey Eagles and the 96th bomb group, 337 squadron, Confederate Air Force.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Christine Chick Wyman of Berwick; a daughter, Donna O’Driscoll of Berwick; a sister, Ruth E. Wyman Horlor of South Berwick; and two granddaughters, Stacey O’Driscoll and Sarah O’Driscoll.

Visiting hours will be held Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells, with an American Legion service at 5:45 p.m. and a Masonic memorial service at 6 p.m.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the chapel with the Rev. Cindy Nickerson officiating.

Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made in his name to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 346, Augusta, ME 04330.

David Dean
ROCHESTER - David P. Dean, 71, of 59 Estes Road, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, at his home after a lengthy illness.

Born May 17, 1930, he was the son of Truman F. and Harriet Cilly Dean.

He was educated in Center Strafford School and Austin Cate Academy.

He was a veteran of the Korean War.

After serving his country, he became an auto mechanic for Gerald E. Towle Oldsmobile. He then became a truck driver for Brackett & Shaw, Diamond International and J. Russel Osborne, from which he retired.

He was a member of the Third Baptist Church in Center Strafford.

He loved his family, hunting, fishing and woodworking.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Christina W. Dean; two sons, David P. Dean and his wife, Janet, and Gary S. Dean; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, James T. Dean; a sister and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Randlett; many nieces, nephews, and friends.

A memorial service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Third Baptist Church in Center Strafford with the Rev. James Bosworth officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Seacoast Cancer Clinic, Dover; Oncology Department, Frisbie Memorial Hospital, Rochester; to Rochester/Rural District VNA & Hospice; or any charity of one’s choice.

Richard Fortin Sr.

GILFORD - Richard A. Fortin Sr., 73, of Lake Breeze Trailer Park, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at the Lakes Region General Hospital.

He was born June 12, 1928, in Laconia, the son of Raymond and Yvonne (Dutile) Fortin. He attended Sacred Heart School and graduated from Dover High School in 1947. He was very active in basketball during his high school years.

Mr. Fortin moved to Laconia and was employed as a supervisor at Scott & Williams for 21 years. He worked at NH Ballbearing as a supervisor for 20 years, retiring in 1992. He was also employed at Woodgate Manufacturing in Franklin.

In July of 1951, he married Rita F. Lessard, daughter of Geremie and Mary Filion Lessard. They recently celebrated their 50th anniversary this past July with family and friends.

He was a past member of the Laconia Lodge of Elks and St. Jean de Baptiste. He spent six years in the National Guard Battery C Unit. He was a pack leader and a cub master for Sacred Heart Parish. He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church.

He is survived by his wife, Rita of Gilford; a son, Richard A. Fortin Jr. and his wife, Darlene of Tilton; two daughters, Cathleen Marcotte and her husband, Richard of Belmont; Deborah Luff and her husband, Paul of Laconia; seven grandchildren, Christopher, Jessica and Corey St. Gelais, Dustin and Sarah Fortin, and Tara and Nathan Luff; three great-grandchildren, Allesia, Austin, Arianna and their mother, Keelie St. Gelais; and two sisters, Muriel Guilmette and Regina Dionne and her husband, Norman, all of Gilford; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Jim and Claire Smith of Gilford, Norman and Tish Perry of Iola, Wisc., Roger and Barbara Lessard of Clearwater, Fla.; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Anders of Franklin and Lucile Lessard of Springfield, Mass; two aunts, Nora Bolduc of Laconia and Eleanor Deshais of Franklin; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Calling hours will be held Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Carriage House of the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant St., Laconia.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Laconia. The Rev. Adrien Longchamps, pastor of the church, will officiate.

Spring burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Community Health and Hospice, Inc., 780 North Main St., Laconia, NH 03246.
