Dorothy Chamberlain

DOVER - Dorothy G. Chamberlain, 85, of 60 Spruce Lane died Friday, June 8, 2001, at her residence after a period of failing health.

Born June 6, 1916 in Dover, she was the daughter of Joseph and Grace (Nute) Gallagher.

She was owner and operator of Chamberlain’s Antiques and was a member of the New Hampshire Antique Dealers’ Association. She was also a lifelong member of Woodman Institute.

The widow of Vernon Chamberlain who died in 1986, Dorothy is survived by two sons, David A. Chamberlain of Amesbury, Mass., and Anthony V. Chamberlain of Lee; four daughters, Mrs. June D. Purington of Weare, Mrs. Gail McCann of Columbus, Ohio, Mrs. Diane Webb of Dover and Mrs. Sally Moran of Stewart, Fla.; sixteen grandchildren; thirty-two great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Judith Ann Tabor, and a grandson, Douglas A. Chamberlain.

Friends and relatives may call from noon to 1 p.m. on Monday, June 11, 2001 at the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave. with funeral services held at 1 p.m. with the Rev. James Pirie, Associate Pastor, First Parish Church, Congregational, officiating.

Burial will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery.

Sister M. Arthur Dakin, Sister of Mercy

WINDHAM - Sister M. Arthur (Dorothy) Dakin, 94, a Sister of Mercy for 75 years, died Friday, June 8, 2001, at Warde Health Center in Windham after a long illness.

A native of Gloucester, Mass., Sister Arthur was the daughter of Arthur J. and A. Gertrude (Brinnick) Dakin. She received her B.A. degree in English and business from Mt. St. Mary College, Hooksett, and her M.A. in English from Boston College.

Sister Arthur was a dedicated educator, serving as teacher and principal in New Hampshire Catholic schools. She taught at St. Joseph Boys’ School, St. Raphael, St. Patrick, and Our Lady of Perpetual Help schools in Manchester; and St. Mary in Dover. She taught at St. Mary High School in Claremont, St. John and Bishop Brady High Schools in Concord, where she also served as principal. She was administrator of Mt. St. Mary High School in Nashua, and was an instructor in the summer school at Mt. St. Mary College in Hooksett. For seven years she was editor of the Magnificat magazine, published by the Sisters of Mercy in Manchester.

In 1962, Sister Arthur was elected to the General Council of the New Hampshire Sisters of Mercy. In 1968 she was elected major superior of the community, a position she held until 1974. She then taught at Castle College in Windham until 1984.

Family members include two nephews, Douglas Jimerson of Woodward, Iowa, and Roger Jimerson of Florida; and two grandnephews.

Friends may call at the Sisters of Mercy Warde Health Center, 21 Searles Road, Windham, N.H. on Sunday, June 10 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday in Our Lady of Mercy Chapel, Sisters of Mercy in Windham. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, June 11 at 11 a.m. in Our Lady of Mercy Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Mercy, 21 Searles Road, Windham, N.H. 03087-1297.

Burial will be at Saint Joseph Cemetery, Bedford, N.H.

Arrangements are by the Douglas & Johnson Funeral Home, 214 Main St., Salem, N.H.

Elliott Willett

DOVER - Elliott "Bud" Willett, 75, of Littleworth Road, died Thursday, June 7, 2001 at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.

He was born in Whitehall, N.Y. on July 27, 1925, the son of Ellery C. and Sarah M. (Gardner) Willett.

He has lived here since 1974, moving from Pease Air Force Base, Newington.

Elliott retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1975. He was a Chief Master Seargeant in the Personnel Administration Office.

He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church, Dover.

He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother.

Members of his family include his wife, Elizabeth (Pieper) Willett, his son, Michael Willett of Eliot, Maine, his daughters, Beth Willett of Dover and Diane Willett of Corinth, Maine.; three sisters, Sally King of Whitehall, N.Y., Jean Jones of Whiteboro, N.Y. and Agnes Kelly of Ft. Myers, Fla.; and four grandchildren.

There will be no visiting hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, June 11, 2001 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church at Chestnut and Third streets, Dover.

The family requests instead of flowers, contributions be made in Bud’s memory to either: Alzheimer’s Disease Education & Referral Center, P.O. Box 8250, Silver Springs, Md. 20907-8250 or to: American Diabetes Association, Honor & Memorial Program/NCC, P.O. Box 2680, N. Canton, Ohio, 44720.

Burial will follow in the family lot in Pine Hill Cemetery, Dover.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover, N.H.

Claire Haddock

BAY HARBOR ISLANDS, Fla. - Claire "Dolly" A. Haddock, 69, formerly of Portsmouth, N.H., passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, June 5, 2001.

She was born on July 25, 1931 in Meredith, N.H., to Ivers Allen and Olive Allen.

She married her childhood sweetheart, John H. Haddock, on July 25, 1949, and followed her beloved husband during his Army military career that included deployments in Europe, tours of duty in the Korean War and Vietnam War and various assignments in the United States.

Dolly and her family moved to Portsmouth, N.H. in 1971, following her husband’s retirement from the U.S. Army. She taught Special Education in area schools for more than 25 years, including positions at Hampton Academy, Little Harbour School and the Maude J. Trefethen School. Her students and fellow teachers will best remember Dolly for her tremendous spirit of giving, unending patience and love for teaching. Some of her dearest friends and fondest memories were from her teaching days.

Following her retirement from teaching, Dolly channeled her energies into volunteer work for local organizations. She loved her work and friends at the Portsmouth Garden Club, including playing the role of Mrs. Claus for the Urban Forestry Center’s Festival of Trees. Dolly also volunteered her time and talents at The Ritchie McFarland Children’s Center.

However, Dolly’s greatest joy came from her role as a wife and a mother to her six children. The following words as written by her departed husband, expressed this most eloquently: "My darling bride, you are my whole world, life and reason for living. Without you, I would be nothing. You have been my source of strength and inspiration. You have shown by example how to be an outstanding mother. You made uncomparable sacrifices for me and our children. I will always be indebted to you."

Dolly was predeceased by her loving husband, John H. Haddock, in 1992; her sister, Jeanne Morrill, in 1994; and her brother, Ernest Ladd, in 2000.

Dolly will be sadly missed by her six children and their families: Leah Many, her husband Danny and their children, Charles, John and Claire; Theah H. Stockton and her children, Tisha and Aleesa Jo; Allen B. Haddock and his wife Sparkle; Selena H. Clarke; John H. Haddock, Jr. and his fiancee Pam; and Jim Haddock and his wife Yvette. She will also be lovingly remembered by her beloved sister-in-law, Alice Ladd, her brother-in-law, William "Timer" Morrill, and many nieces and nephews. Dolly’s family and her friends in New Hampshire and Florida will miss her wonderful smile, her sense of humor and indomitable spirit.

Interment will be at the Arlington National Cemetery on Wednesday, July 18, 2001 at 2 p.m. A celebration of Dolly’s life will be held at the Portsmouth Lodge of Elks on Sunday, July 15, 2001 at 1 p.m. All are welcome to attend.

In lieu of gifts and flowers, donations may be made in Dolly’s name to the Stratham SPCA, located on Greenland Avenue, Stratham, N.H.

Joseph Noel

ROCHESTER - Joseph L. Noel, 81, died peacefully, surrounded by family members, on Thursday, June 7, 2001 at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover.

He was born on June 18, 1919 in Biddeford, Maine, the son of Louis and Laura (Thiverge) Noel of Canada.

The family includes his wife of 60 years, Virginia N. Noel; one daughter, Sandra Elliott of Rochester; three sons, Richard A. of Berwick, Maine, Steven W. of Rochester, and Mark R. of Middleton. He is also survived by three sisters, Alice Healey of Dover, Valeda Brehaut of Rochester, and Chantal Stewart of California; 11 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; one brother, Roland Noel; one step-brother, Russell White; three sisters, Anita Pappas, Penny Houle and Nancy Bledsoe; an infant son, John "Jack", and a son, David.

Mr. Noel was an accomplished Tool and Die Maker. He worked for a number of years at Clarostat in Dover, and served as union steward. In 1986, he retired as a foreman, after 21 years of service at Great Falls Products in Rochester.

He belonged to AARP, and was a life member of the National Rifle Association.

He will be greatly missed by his family and by all those whose lives he touched.

There will be no visiting hours.

Private services for family members will be held on Monday, June 11 at the R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 S. Main St., Rochester, N.H. 03867.

Burial will follow at the Rochester Cemetery.

Marjorie Banks

WAKEFIELD - Marjorie Gladdis Hannaford Banks, 94, of Wakefield Road, died on Thursday, June 7, 2001, at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro.

Born March 27, 1907 in Fairfield, Conn., she was the daughter of the late Clifford S. and Grace (Hannaford) Banks.

A retired School Administrator from Fairfield, Conn., "Marny" retired from the Fairfield School System in 1970, after serving more than 41 years. Her position at the time of retirement was that of Guidance Housemaster of Silliman House at Roger Ludlowe High School, Fairfield is on the House Plan.

Marny was a "people person" for adults and young people alike. She graduated from Smith College, received her master’s degree from Columbia University and completed her sixth year of study at New York University.

After many years as summer campers on Balch Pond in Wakefield, she retired with her sister Elizabeth to Wakefield Corner in 1974, having come from Fairfield, Conn.

An educator and community leader, she served as President of the Connecticut Education Association, which included all Connecticut teachers, President of the Fairfield Education Association, Area Representative of National Education Association and a life member, also a life member of the Connecticut Education Association.

Author of the book "Through the Open Doors of the First Congregational Church of Wakefield, N.H.", she also authored three church pageants for special celebrations, including "Recollections", "Pageant of Brides", and "Bicentennial Pageant". She served as the Chairman of Wakefield’s yearlong Bicentennial Celebration’s many activities. She had also served as president of Delta Kappa Gamma.

After she retired, she was known as the "Story Lady" in schools in Connecticut and New Hampshire. She was a member of the Greenfield Hill Church in Fairfield, Conn., a Past Master of the Greenfield Hill Grange and member of the original Planning and Organizing Committee when Fairfield, Conn., moved to Representative Town Meeting form of government. She was a member of the Huggins Hospital Auxiliary, member of the Puppeteers, associate member of the First Congregational Church of Wakefield and the Parish Helpers of the Church, Honorary member of the Wakefield Woman’s Club, a president of the Wakefield/Brookfield Historical Society and member of the New Hampshire Farm Museum in Milton.

Marny was the co-owner and originator of the "Lemonade and Gingerbread" Gift Shop of Wakefield and the Museum of Childhood of Wakefield, with her sister whom she is survived by, Elizabeth Banks MacRury of Wakefield.

She is also survived by several cousins.

A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, June 12 at 2 p.m. at the First Congregational Church of Wakefield with the Rev. John Tamilio III; also a Memorial Service will be held on Friday, June 15 at 11 a.m. at the Greenfield Hill Congregational Church in Fairfield, Conn. Interment will be at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Fairfield, Conn.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the "Restoration of the Spinney Meeting House" in Wakefield, c/o the Wakefield Heritage Commission, Wakefield Town Hall, 2 High St., Wakefield, N.H. 03872.

Arrangements are in the care of C.E. Peaslee & Son Funeral Home, Wakefield, N.H.

Alexander Cournoyer

FARMINGTON - Alexander Knobby Cournoyer, 54, of Hornetown Road, died on Saturday, June 2, 2001, after a single motor vehicle accident in Raymond.

Born Nov. 21, 1946, in Derry, he was the son of the late Armand J. and Etta (Gilman) Cournoyer.

He had resided in Farmington for four months, having come from Rochester and, prior to that, had resided in Somersworth for 9 years.

He was formerly employed at George and Ed’s Variety in Rochester.

He enjoyed hunting.

Survivors include his wife, Janice Cournoyer of Dover; two brothers, Warren Ford of Tamworth and Wendell Ford of Concord; five sisters, Helen Gregoire of Stamford, Conn., Mary Call of Lisbon Falls, Maine, Mattie Dubois of Manchester, Grace Tripp of Farmington and Waneta Hoyt of Rochester; and many nieces and nephews.

There are no services planned.

Arrangements are in the care of C.E. Peaslee & Son Funeral Home, 32 Central St., Farmington, N.H. 03835.

Maurice Benoit

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine - Maurice R. Benoit, 86, of Berwick Road, died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001, at York Hospital following a period of failing health.

He was born Oct. 5, 1915, in Berwick, the son of Leon and Philomen (Langlois) Benoit and has been a lifelong resident.

A veteran of the Army-Air Force, Maurice proudly served his country during World War II. He was a member of the First Parish Federated Church, where he sang in the choir.

Maurice was the service manager at Farmer Chevrolet in Rochester, N.H., and also Leighton Chevrolet in York. Prior to taking ill, he was the manager at the South Berwick Getty Station.

Maurice loved his family, bird watching, gardening and fishing. For a time, he was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

Members of the family include his son, Timothy Benoit of South Berwick; two daughters, Salley M. Sawyer, Ph.D. of Aberdeen, S.D., and Gretchen Evans of South Berwick; five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The family will observe private burial services in Woodlawn Cemetery, South Berwick.

Friends are invited to join the family at a memorial service Sunday, Nov. 11, at 2 p.m. at the First Parish Federated Church, Main Street, South Berwick, with the Rev. Donna Muise, pastor, officiating.

Memorial donations are suggested to First Parish Federated Church, South Berwick Rescue Squad or the South Berwick Historical Society.

Arrangements are under the direction of the McIntire-McCooey Funeral Home, 301 Main St., South Berwick.

Carol DeChard

PORTSMOUTH - Mrs. Carol G. (Goddard) DeChard, 69, of Gates Street, passed away at her home Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001.

Born in New Rochelle, N.Y., to Theodore N. and Margaret B. (Ballard) Goddard, she spent her early years in Old Bennington, Vt.

She and her husband moved to Portsmouth in 1994 after a 30-year residency in Chappaqua, N.Y.

She attended the University of New Hampshire and received her associate’s degree in studio arts in 1998, at the age of 67.

She is survived by her husband, Richard; her daughter, Sandra DeChard-Pigford and her husband, Robert B. of Portland, Maine; and her brother, Theodore Goddard of Perkinsville, Vt.

A memorial service will he held Friday, Nov. 16, at 10 a.m. at the First Congregational Church at Kittery Point, 23 Pepperell Road (Route 103), Kittery Point, Maine.

The family prefers that remembrances in her memory be in the form of contributions to the Portsmouth/Derry/Salem Home Health and Hospice Services, 95 Albany St., Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Interment will be held at the Proprietors Burying Ground in Portsmouth at a time convenient to the family.

Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, is assisting with arrangements.
