Gertrude M. Green

DOVER - Gertrude M. Green, 96, of 3 Whittier St. died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001, at the Langdon Place of Dover.

Born in Boiestown, New Brunswick, Canada, on June 13, 1905, the daughter of Herbert and Ellen (MacDonald) Hinchey, she lived in Dover for all of her adult life.

She is a graduate of the Wentworth Hospital School of Nursing, class of 1929. She was employed as a registered nurse at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital and Frisbie Memorial Hospital as well as many private duty cases.

She is survived by a daughter, Barbara A. Mello and her husband Manuel B. of Dover; three grandchildren, Joseph Callaghan of Bedford, Deborah Freeman of Hampstead and Sharon Mitchell of Bow; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Grace Flinn of Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada, and Ellen McMillen of Bonnet Shores, R.I.; a brother, Glenn Hinchey of Hawaii; and nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph A. Green, who died in 1995.

Relatives and friends are invited to call on Monday from 7-9 p.m. at the Tasker Funeral Home at 621 Central Ave. in Dover.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Tasker Funeral Home with Pastor David Blakeley of the Barrington Assembly of God Church officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary New Cemetery.

Memorials in her name may be made to the Gideons Bible Society, 2900 Lebanon Rd., Nashville, TN 37214.

Theodore Mantos Sr.

DOVER - Theodore "Ted" Mantos Sr., 81, of 8 Constitution Way, died Friday, Nov. 2, 2001, at the Riverside Rest Home.

Born in Dover on Oct. 10, 1920, the son of William and Christina (Sicklas) Mantouvalos, he was a graduate of Dover High School.

He was a former employee of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and was the manager for the Dover Social Club until his retirement in 1985.

He loved to golf and was a former member of the Cochecho Country Club.

He is survived by a son, Theodore "Ted" Mantos Jr.; his wife, Diane of Milton; two grandchildren, Ted Mantos III and Jennifer Mantos; two brothers, Peter Mantos and Charles Mantos, both of Dover; and nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; two brothers, Louis and John Mantos; a sister, Alice Planche; and his former wife, June Louise (Caron) Austin, who died earlier this year.

Relatives and friends are invited to call on Tuesday from 10-11 a.m. at the Tasker Funeral Home at 621 Central Ave., Dover where funeral services will immediately follow. The Rev. Constantine Newman, pastor of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation, will officiate.

Memorials in his name may be made to the Riverside Rest Home, County Farm Road, Dover, NH 03820.

Ruth Pisano

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine - Ruth Pisano, 83, of 21 Beech Road, died Friday, Nov. 2, 2001, at the Dover Rehabilitation & Living Center after a valiant and long battle with cancer.

Born in Boston on Feb. 20, 1918, the daughter of Martin and Katherine (Leary) Peterson, she had resided in Wakefield, Mass., prior to moving to South Berwick five years ago.

Prior to her retirement she was a waitress at the Fantasia Restaurant in Cambridge, Mass.

She is survived by her husband, Adam Pisano of South Berwick; two sons, Richard Pisano of South Berwick and Peter Pisano of Wilmington, Mass.; two grandchildren, Adam and Damian Pisano, both of South Berwick; two sisters, Anne Meehan of Amherst and Patricia Geisert of Concord, Mass.; a brother, John "Jacky" Peterson of Medford, Mass.; and nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents and a daughter, Bonnie McKeague.

There are no calling hours.

A Memorial Funeral Mass will be held 3:30 p.m. on Thursday at St. Michael’s Church on Young Street in South Berwick, with the Rev. H.J. Cameron, pastor, officiating.

Memorials in her name may be given to the charity of one’s choice.

The McIntire-McCooey Funeral Home assisted with the arrangements.

Frederick Swett

MILFORD - Frederick E. Swett, 81, resident of 161 Bridge St., died Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Nashua.

He was born in Framingham, Mass., on Jan. 2, 1920, a son of the late Raymond and Adelaide (Dallachie) Swett.

Mr. Swett had been a resident of the Milford and Wilton areas for the past six years and had formerly resided in Dover, Wells, Maine, and Framingham, Mass., for many years.

He bad been employed as a purchasing agent for Baker Company in Sanford, Maine, for 15 years.

He was a classical music enthusiast and a lover of nature, animals and history.

He was a communicant of St. Patrick’s Church, Milford.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II and Korea.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Gloria A. (Drinkwine) Swett of Milford; a son and daughter-in-law, Jeremy F. and Charlene Swett of Grafton, Mass.; a daughter and son-in-law, Hilary S. and Bob Keating of Nashua; three grandchildren and their spouses, Morgan and Heather Keating of Nashua, Matthew and Gwendolynne Swett of West Chester, Pa., and Pamela and Matthew Leighninger of Hamilton, Ontario; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Edith Kratzsch of Milford and Adelaide Stearns of Framingham; a sister-in-law, Minda Swett of Madison, Va.; many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Smith & Heald Funeral Home, 63 Elm St., Milford.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday at 11 a.m. in St. Patrick’s Church, 34 Amherst St., Milford.

Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Milford.

If so desired, donations in his memory may be made to American Diabetes Association, N.H. Affiliate, 249 Canal St., Manchester, N.H. 03101; or Alzheimer’s Association, Greater New Hampshire Chapter, 10 Ferry St., Suite 419, Concord, N.H. 03301.

Smith & Heald Funeral Home, Milford, is in charge of arrangements.

Myrtle Roberts

ROCHESTER - Myrtle Irene Roberts, 95, formerly of 1 Hale St., died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001, at Sunbridge Nursing Home after a period of failing health.

She was born on Feb. 18, 1906, in Nova Scotia, Canada the daughter of the late Edgar and Minne Carter. She has resided in Rochester since 1927 and was a homemaker.

Roberts was a member of the First Church Congregational of Rochester and past matron of the Order of Eastern Star.

The widow of Cecil Erlon Roberts, who she was married to for 69 years, she is survived by one son, Erlon P.; a daughter-in-law, Arline Roberts of Alton Bay; three grandchildren, Linda R. Crosby, Nancy R. Colbroth and her husband, James, and Paul D. Roberts and companion Deborah Evans all of Rochester; and a great-grandson Jay T. Crosby of Rochester.

Family and friends may visit Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main St. in Rochester.

The service will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Rochester Cemetery on Franklin Street in Rochester.

Michael Staples

LEBANON, Maine - Michael Roland Staples, 52, died Friday, Nov. 9, 2001, at his residence.

Born in North Berwick on July 16, 1949, he was the son of Raymond and Esther Verge Staples. He graduated from North Berwick High School and was the proprietor of a used car dealership in Lebanon.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Dion Staples of Lebanon; three sons, Michael Staples Jr. of Las Vegas, Billy Staples and George Lesperance of Columbia; three daughters, Tracie Staples of Sanford, Maine, Darlene Lesperance of Brunswick, Vt. and Dianne Lesperance of Tennessee; five brothers, Wayne Staples of Sanford, Maine, Raymond Staples of Milton, Ronald Staples of Salina, Kan., Richard Staples of North Berwick, Maine; four sisters, Beverly Randall and Deborah Wilson of North Berwick, Rose Marie Avery of York, Maine and Linda Bray of North Berwick, Maine; and seven grandchildren.

There will be visiting hours Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home in North Berwick. A funeral will be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Robert G. Cole, Sr. of the Bethel Christian Church officiating. Interment is at the Hillside Cemetery in North Berwick.

David Copley

BLACK ROCK, Conn. - David S. Copley died unexpectedly on Friday, Nov. 9, 2001, at his home. He was 47.

Born in Indiana, Pa., in 1954, David was the son of Jack and Ann Copley of Kittery, Maine. David graduated from Wilton High School in Wilton, Conn.

David owned and operated a landscape design and construction business in Fairfield County.

In the 1970s he was a professional skier and continued his love of skiing long after. He also loved to sail his new sailboat on Long Island Sound and enjoyed renovating homes with his wife, Lorrie.

He leaves his wife, Lorrie ard of Black Rock; two stepgrandchildren, Danya and Chris of Black Rock; his parents Ann and Jack of Kittery; a brother, John of Boston; a sister, Lissa of Kittery; a niece, Elizabeth (Copley) Lombard; a grandniece Hannah of Ipswich, Mass.; and many uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.

Services will be held Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, at the Spears Funeral Home, 39 South Benson Rd. in Fairfield, Conn. Calling hours will be 4 to 6 p.m. followed by a memorial service at 6 p.m.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Diabetes Foundation, 1701 North Beauregard St., Alexandria, Va. 22311.

Lucille D. Markot

LACONIA - Lucille D. Markot, 79, of 40 Crescent St. died at her home on Friday, Nov. 9, 2001.

The daughter of Cleophas and Rose (Truchon) Blais was born in Laconia on Oct. 3, 1922.

While still a student at Laconia High School, she met her future husband, Walter P. Markot, with whom she was sharing her 60th year of marriage.

Lucille was a talented dancer and prize speaker. She used the latter skill when moderating style shows at many fine clothing stores. In the 1960s she owned her own store, ToT ‘n’ Teen, in partnership with Ann Morin of Laconia and the late Dorothy Perley of Lakeport.

In her professional capacity, she coordinated presidential primary dinners throughout New Hampshire and supervised wait staff in several local fine dining establishments.

She was active in politics for decades, campaigning and working for Sen. Thomas J. McIntyre and serving as a ballot inspector in Ward 2. She was passionate about her charitable work and counseled single parents in Laconia in the 1980s. She was a member of Catholic Daughters of America for 50 years and also assisted the Ladies Guild for many years. She was a devout Catholic and communicant at St. Joseph’s Church.

Her greatest joy, however, was making people happy, which she did in countless ways her entire life.

Family members in addition to her husband include two sons, W. Brian Markot of Gilford and Bruce A. Markot of Middletown, Conn.; a daughter, Janet R. Guyer of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; a sister, E. Jacqueline Blais of Springfield, Ohio; four grandsons, Capt. Peter B. Markot of Colorado Springs, Colo., Stephen B. Markot of Nashua, Timothy B. Markot of Hudson and Matthew L. Markot of Middletown; two granddaughters, Paulina D. Melechkina of Oneonta, N.Y., Eliziveta D. Meleshkina of Gilford; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and godchildren.

Calling hours will be in the Simoneau & Lambert Funeral Home, 139 Church St. on Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Joseph Church at 30 Church St. on Tuesday at 10 a.m. Rev. Gary J. Kosmowski, pastor, will be the celebrant. Memorial donations may be made to the Laconia High School Class of 1940 Scholarship Fund, c/o Joan Cormier, 14 Country Club Rd., Gilford, N.H. 03249. Timothy C. Molan and David L. Furber are the funeral directors.

Herschel Burt

EXETER - Herschel B. Burt, 73, of 93 Linden Street, died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, at his home.

Born July 8, 1927, in Waltham, Mass., he was the son of Edwin B. and Violet V. (Groves) Burt.

He was raised in Waltham and attended schools there. He lived in Exeter for many years.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II.

He was member and trustee of Exeter United Methodist Church, a member of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors and a trustee of the Willard House Clock Museum of Grafton, Mass. He was the owner and developer of Deep Meadow Estates and Deep Meadow Valley in Exeter.

He was the husband of Thelma M. (Ketchen) Burt for 47 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Thomas B. Burt and Steven H. Burt, both of Exeter; two daughters, Holly L. Colcord of Exeter and Judy V. Colella of North Hampton; 19 grandchildren; one sister, Marjorie Liebried of Brentwood; two nephews, Edwin Burt of Epping and Gerald Burt of Newmarket; several nieces and nephews.

Anna Dollard

BRENTWOOD - Mrs. Anna (Pierce) Dollard, 96, of 117 North Road, died Monday, Oct. 16, 2000, at the Rockingham County Nursing Home in Brentwood. She resided in Rye until 1972 and was formerly of Newmarket.

She was born in Natick, Mass., on Sept. 10, 1904, the daughter of Frank N. and Annie (Knowles) Pierce.

Mrs. Dollard was formerly a domestic worker throughout the Seacoast area and was a lifelong member of Pomona Grange No. 260 of Hampton. Survivors include one son, John P. Dollard Sr., and his wife Betty Jane of Northwood; two grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Private burial will be held at the convenience of the family in Central Cemetery in Rye.

Visiting hours will be held at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. Donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home.

Paul Gnirk

SOMERSWORTH - Paul Emile Gnirk, 55, of 62 1/2 Maple Street, died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000, at his residence.

Born May 15, 1945, in Portsmouth, he was the son of Fritz Emile and Gladys V. (Wing) Gnirk.

He was a graduate of Dover High School and was in the U.S. Army Reserve.

He was employed as a sheet metal designer and fabricator for 28 years at Hampton Machine and at Kidder Press.

Paul enjoyed sailing, hiking and camping. He was a good artist and a great woodworker.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie (Nowell) Gnirk of Somersworth; a son, Paul Robert Gnirk of Dover; two stepsons, Christopher and Cory Syvinski; one sister, Iris (Mrs. Richard) Dixon of Dover; two adopted children, Chad Gnirk of Portsmouth, and Kimberely (Gnirk) Breakfield of East Rochester; two nieces and two nephews.

There will be no calling hours.

A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family at a later date.

Those who wish may make donations in his memory to the Portsmouth Home, Health and Hospice Service, 95 Albany Street, Portsmouth, N.H., 03801.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Avenue, Dover.

Else Jensen

DOVER - Else Milde Jensen, 92, of 8 Farmington Drive, Dover, died Saturday, Oct. 14, after a brief illness.

She was born in Trondheim, Norway, August 1, 1908, the daughter of Olaf and Reidun Milde. Having lost both parents at 10 years old, she was raised by an aunt and uncle in Sandnessjoen, Norway, an island just below the Artic Circle.

Else Jensen, with her husband owned and operated Cabinland Motel in Plainville, Mass. for 36 years. She was active in civic affairs serving as president of the P.T.A., director of the local Salvation Army and the Plainville, Mass. Industrial Development Committee, a member of the Sons of Norway and the Plainville United Methodist Church and it’s Women’s Club. She has lived in Dover since 1985. Else worked at the Mountain View Restaurant at Nippo Lank Golf Club, a family owned business, from 1985 until March of 1997. She was an avid reader who loved poetry, politics and people.

She is survived by her son Lloyd Jensen and his wife Nancy, of Alton; her daughter Elizabeth Dittrich and her husband William of Center Barnstead; five grandchildren, Karen Dittrich Connelly and her husband, John of Madbury, Mark Dittrich and his wife, Pamela of Bothell, Wash., Craig Dittrich and his wife, Jean of Bath, Maine, Kathy Jensen Rowell and her husband, Steve of Barrington and Kendra Jensen Kantar and her husband, Jeffrey of Alton; ten great-grandchildren; one great, great-granddaughter.

She was predeceased by her husband Lloyd A. Jensen Sr.; a brother, Per Milde of Sandnessjoen, Norway and a grandson Kirk A. Jensen.

Calling hours will be held at the Purdy Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 2 Concord Rd. (Rt. 4 W) Lee, on Oct. 18, from 4 to 8 p.m.

A graveside service and interment will be on Thursday Oct. 19, at the Shepardsville Cemetary, Taunton St. Plainville, Mass., at 11:30 a.m. Family and Friends are invited.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shriner’s Hospital for Crippled Children, Boston Unit or Springfield Unit, Bektash Temple, A.A.O.N.M.S., P.O. Box 7252, Concord, NH 03301, or to the charity of ones choice.
