Sherwood Baker

JEFFERSON, Maine - Sherwood Clair Baker, 70, passed away Monday, Nov. 5, 2001, at the Maine Veteran’s Home in Augusta.

He was born Sept. 19, 1931, in Albion, Maine, the son of Claude Ervin Baker and Pearl Helen Crosby Baker.

Mr. Baker attended Albion schools and Besse High School in Albion.

In 1949 he joined the United States Army and served both in Korea and Vietnam leaving the service in 1972. He then went to work for the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard retiring in 1984.

He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans in Portsmouth, N.H., a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Somersworth, N.H.

He attended the First Baptist Church in Jefferson. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his wife, Ethel C. Baker of Jefferson, Maine; sons, Joseph Baker of Dana Point, Calif., Gary Baker and his wife, Linda of Sanford; daughters, Sherry Roberts of Lacey, Wash., Catherine Tabler and her husband, Michael, of Eliot, Cindy Bates and her husband, David, of Forest Grove, Ore.; sister, Opal Clark of Belleview, Fla.; brother, Wilmont Baker and his wife, Gloria, of Cathedral City, Calif.; grandchildren, Christopher Main of Boston, Mass., Patrick Main of Sanford, Ryan Baker of Sanford, Gina and Jennifer Thorpe of Lacey, Wash., Breanne Junker of Eliot, Michelle Tabler of Eliot, Megan, Joseph and Robert Bates of Hillsboro, Ore.; great-grandchildren, Sarah and Michael Baker of Sanford, Brian and Nicole Main of Sanford; very special friends, Robert Bilodeau of Dover, N.H., Virginia Ross of Kingsport, Tenn., Anita Thomas of Portsmouth, N.H.

He is predeceased by his brothers, Randall, Glenwood and Reginald Baker; sisters, Althea Baker and Elinor Dickey.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, Nov. 9, at the Jefferson First Baptist Church, Jefferson, followed by a 1 p.m., committal service at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery Chapel in Augusta.

Arrangements have been made by the Hall Funeral Home, Waldoboro, Maine.

Jasperdean Clegg

KITTERY POINT, Maine - Jasperdean W. Clegg, 39, beloved daughter of Lisa and Lee Clegg, died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2001, at her home in Kittery Point, following a short illness.

Born in Reading, Pa., she moved at an early age to Mendham, N.J. Later she moved with her parents to Morristown and then to Madison, N.J. She graduated from Gill St. Bernards and attended Choate Rosemary Hall and Williston Northampton. She graduated in 1985 from Monmouth University in Long Branch, N.J., with a degree in languages, concentrating in French. She followed that by completing Katherine Gibb’s Entreé Program.

Following graduation, she lived in Madison then Chatham, N.J., while working first for Rene Furterer, and then Faberge and Cosmair in New York City. Later she was employed in sales by Christine Valmy of Pine Brook, Sebastian Salon Services of Fairlawn, then for eight years by Emiliani Enterprises of Union, N.J.

In early 2000, she moved to New Hampshire where she was a field sales person for C.B. Sullivan, a full service beauty supply distributor for salons.

Her most recent position was in sales with Le Creuset of Kittery, Maine, one of great pleasure for her as it made extensive use of her French speaking ability.

A vivacious person who was the first to extend a helping hand, she loved fashion, was a fine photographer, and especially loved travel. Her humor will be deeply missed.

She is survived by her parents of Madison, N.J.; her grandmother, Evelyn Pentland of Morris Plains, N.J.; one brother, Campbell A. Clegg of Brunswick, Maine; one sister, Kimberly Clegg Beecher of Irmo, S.C.; four nieces and nephews; her aunt and uncle, Margaret and Richie Graham, formerly of Whippany, N.J.; and two cousins, Steven and Glenn Graham of Phoenix, Ariz.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17, at the First Presbyterian Church, 75 Second St., Manchester and also at 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 30, at the Presbyterian Church of Madison, N.J.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her name to the American Lung Association would be deeply appreciated.

Arrangements are under the direction of The J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Rd., Kittery, Maine 03904.

Ann Merrill

EXETER - Ann Merrill, 57, of Sherwood Forest, died Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2001, at her home in Exeter.

Born March 28, 1944, in Manchester, she was the daughter of Alberta (Littlehale) Moulton and her husband Richard, and the late, Everett Menter.

She lived in East Kingston for 22 years before moving to Exeter in 1997. She enjoyed sewing, knitting and crafts.

She is survived by her mother and stepfather of Barrington; her husband of 41 years, Marshall E. Merrill Jr. of Exeter; one son, Marshall E. Merrill III and his wife, Patricia, of Exeter; two daughters, Teresa A. Brailsford of Newfields and Nancy L. Brindle and her husband, Gerald of Evansville, Ind.; six grandchildren; two brothers, Albert E. Menter and Everett George "Butch" Murphy, both of Lebanon, Maine; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visiting hours will be held Saturday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 10:30 a.m. at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket.

Burial will follow in the Durham Cemetery. Flowers are acceptable, or should friends desire, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Gail Singer Memorial Bldg., 360 State Route 101, Suite 501, Bedford, NH 03110-5032.

Beatrice Olmstead

NORTHWOOD - Beatrice Belle (Wood) Olmstead, 92, of Sherburne Hill Rd., died unexpectedly on Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2001, at the Concord Hospital.

She was born on March 20, 1909, in Gardena, Calif., the daughter of William G. and Ita Culver Wood of Santa Ana, Calif. She graduated from Santa Ana High School in 1926.

She received her registered nursing degree from the Pasadena Hospital School of Nursing in 1929 where she continued to be a surgical and office nurse for the next seven years. She later practiced nursing at the University of New Hampshire in Durham and Concord Hospital.

After being engaged by mail, she came to New Hampshire by train in 1936 to marry Ronald Olmstead on the Campus of Dartmouth College. They lived in New York State for 23 years before settling in Northwood in 1960. They were married for 63 years until his death in March of 2000. She spent her lifetime caring for family and friends through her nursing and nurturing; she was always smiling. She was an avid seamstress, loved to make quilts, did beautiful stenciling on tin and furniture, and tended her gorgeous gardens. She was a member of the Harvey Lake Women’s Club for many years, worked with AVC Quilts and served her community in any way she could.

She is survived by two daughters, Barbara Carr and her husband, Winslow of Northwood, and Jeanne Eaton and her husband, James of York, Maine; four grandchildren, Lisa Ward and Stephanie Carr of Northwood, Janice Eaton of Kittery, Maine and Jeffrey Eaton of York; three nieces; two nephews, and three great-grandchildren.

There are no calling hours. A funeral service will be held on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in the Perkins Funeral Home, Cremation Service & Monument Co. Inc., 60 Main St. Pittsfield. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Northwood.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in her memory to the Harvey Lake Women’s Club, C/O Alice Gilchrist, Lucas Pond Rd., Northwood, NH 03261.

Florence Rouleau

SOMERSWORTH - Florence Ann Rouleau, 71, of 28 Franklin St. died peacefully in the presence of her family on Monday, Nov. 5, 2001. She was born Nov. 23, 1929, in South Berwick, Maine, the daughter of Frank and Maude (Jarvis) Verge and the youngest of four children. She was educated there and had resided there until she married and moved to Somersworth in the early 50s.

Mrs. Rouleau loved collecting teddy bears and unique refrigerator magnets. She enjoyed watching the Red Sox and was the biggest fan at all of her grandchildren’s sporting events. Her most recent adventure had been to visit her twin great-grandchildren in California and buying them their first bicycles. She had been employed at Roberts Shoe Co. for many years until her retirement. For the past few years, Mrs. Rouleau had been a faithful volunteer of the Congregate Housing Service Program at Charpentier Apartments.

She will be sadly missed by all that had the privilege of knowing her.

Survivors include Robert Rouleau of Somersworth; a daughter, Estelle (Rouleau) Hernandez and her husband, Michael, of Dover; two sons, Robert A. Rouleau of Somersworth and Paul Rouleau and his wife, Barbara, of Barrington; four grandchildren, Denise Hernandez, Nicole Hernandez, Jamie Rouleau and Megan Rouleau; two great-grandchildren, Logan and Adrien Horowitz; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Roberge Funeral Home 298 High St. Somersworth. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday at St. Martin Church at 10:30 a.m.

Burial will follow at St. Michael Cemetery in Rollinsford. Memorials in her name, may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 1001 Elm St., Manchester, NH 03101.

Helen Rowe

PORTSMOUTH - Helen Virginia (Smith) Rowe, 83, wife of Earle E. Rowe of 29 Sutton Ave., died Monday, Nov. 5, 2001, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

She was born in Haverhill, Mass. on Aug. 13, 1918, the daughter of the late John H. and Annie (MacNeil) Smith.

Mrs. Rowe was a graduate of Haverhill High School Class of 1936 and received her bachelor’s degree in business from Burdette College.

She was formerly employed as an executive assistant at the Portsmouth Savings Bank for over 22 years.

She and her husband, Earle, formerly summered at Province Lake in East Wakefield.

She was a member of the North Congregational Church in Portsmouth, where she was active with the Nearly New Shop, and a member of Riverside Congregational Church in Haverhill. She was also a member of the Rivermouth Chapter 454 Order of the Eastern Star in Portsmouth, the Garden Club, Bridge Club, the Province Lake Association and was formerly active with Rainbow and the Mother’s Club of the Portsmouth Order of DeMolay.

She was a volunteer at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital as well.

Besides her husband of 60 years, she is survived by a daughter, Marilyn Trafton and her husband, Robert of Titusville, Fla.; a son, Neil Rowe and his wife, Lynn of Stratham; a brother, Milton Smith of Merrimacport, Mass.; a sister, Marjorie Brewer of Haverhill, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Burton Smith.

There will be no visiting hours.

Friends are invited to memorial services to be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Memorial Gift Coordinator, Bektash Shriners, PO Box 7252, Concord, NH 03301- 7252 for the support of the Shriners Hospital for Children.

Marjorie Tibbetts

LEE - Marjorie Fournier Tibbetts, 51, of 86 Pinkham Road died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001, at Hospice House of Concord after a period of failing health.

Born Oct. 1, 1950, in Concord, she was the daughter of Alfred T. and Marie (Brochu) Boissey.

A secretary, she was employed with Hodgdon Laboratory, BC/BS and for the State of New Hampshire Special Medical Services for the last 23 and one-half years.

Survivors include her husband, Larry Tibbetts of Lee; a son, Matthew J. Fournier of Newmarket; three brothers, Alfred T. Boissey, Jr. of Hooksett, Edward J. Boissey of Northwood and Bruce B. Boissey of Concord; two sisters, Betty A. Wagner of Loudon and Katherine B. Wheeler of Bow; as well as aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Tracey Marie Fournier, who died in 1988.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday at the Purdy Memorial Chapel, 2 Concord Rd., Rt. 4, Lee, with the Rev. John Poirier, pastor of St. Joseph’s Church in Dover, officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in Calvary Cemetery, State Street, Concord.

Those who wish may make donations in her memory to the Hospice House of Concord, 240 Pleasant St., Concord, NH 03301. Arrangements under the direction of Purdy Memorial Chapel and Oyster River Crematory.

Richard Chick
ACTON, Maine - Richard A. Chick, 68, of West Shore Drive died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2001, at his home. He was born in Portsmouth, N.H. on April 17, 1933, a son of Edward and Carrie (Staples) Chick.

He was educated in Portsmouth and Kittery schools.

Mr. Chick was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a rigger for 23 years, retiring in 1981 due to a job related injury. He previously worked as an auto mechanic at Tacetta Chevrolet and also had his own repair garage.

Mr. Chick has been residing here since October 1978 coming here from Kittery Point. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, camping, snowmobiling and vegetable gardening. Mrs. Chick and her children said that he was a kind and loving husband and dad.

He was a member of the National Rifle Association (NRA), and member of Notre Dame Church, Springvale.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Patricia A. (Clark) Chick and a daughter Katherine Chick, both of Acton; two sons, John of Dover, N.H. and Timothy of Acton; a brother, Robert of South Berwick; two sisters, Frances Whittman of New York and Elizabeth Goerner of Fitchburg, Mass.; and two grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the LaFrance-Lambert Funeral Home, 29 Winter St., Sanford. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday in Notre Dame Church, Springvale. Burial will follow in Brooks Memorial Park, Eliot.

Shirley DeLong

AMESBURY, Mass. - Shirley A. DeLong, 55, of 8 Amidon Ave., died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at Anna Jacques Hospital in Newburyport with her family at her side.

Born in Dover, N.H., on Nov. 28, 1946, she was the daughter of John and Leotto (Whittier) Leonard. She was the wife of Robert "Bobby" DeLong.

She attended Newburyport schools and was a graduate of Newburyport High School, Class of 1964.

A longtime Amesbury resident, Mrs. DeLong and her husband owned and operated Amesbury Coach and DeLong’s Auto Body on Elm Street in Amesbury.

She was very active in her community and was past president of the Amesbury All Sports Booster Club and was an active volunteer with the Amesbury Lions Club, of which her husband was a member. She was an avid doll collector, specializing in rare and limited edition German dolls. She enjoyed traveling and spending summers at Alton Bay, N.H., and Aruba in winter.

She was a generous person and gave to many charities. She was loved by many and will be sadly missed by family and friends.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Stephen DeLong and his wife, Sheri-Lyn, of Salisbury and Jeffrey DeLong of Amesbury; her mother-in-law, Marie P. DeLong of Amesbury; her sister-in-law, Beverly DeLong; many nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday at 10 a.m. in Holy Family Parish’s St. Joseph Church on School Street in Amesbury.

Burial will follow in the Mount Prospect Cemetery.

Calling hours will be held today from 4 to 8 p.m. at the E.V. Jutras & Sons Funeral Home, 118 Friend St., Amesbury.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the 3-West Nurses’ Station, c/o Catherine McDonald, Anna Jacques Hospital, 25 Highland Ave., Newburyport, MA 01950; or to the Amesbury Lions Club, P.O. Box 466, Amesbury, MA 01913.

Robert Jackson

HAMPTON - Robert E. Jackson, 79, of 7 Dearborn Ave., died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at the Exeter Hospital.

He was born July 31, 1922, in Brattleboro, Vt., the son of Lee F. and Alta E. (King) Jackson. Mr. Jackson lived many years in Ipswich, Mass. and 23 years in Seabrook, before moving to Hampton last year.

He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army serving as a technician fifth grade with the 90th Reconnaissance Battalion in Central Europe.

Mr. Jackson worked over 20 years as a machinist for the Sylvania plants in Ipswich and Salem, Mass., retiring in the mid 1980s.

He was a member of the National Rifle Association and in earlier years enjoyed hunting and riding motorcycles. During the war, he rode the Army’s Harley Davidson motorcycles.

Family members include his wife of 59 years, Hazel V. (Luce) Jackson of Hampton; two sons, Robert E. Jackson, Jr. of Center Barnstead and David A. Jackson of Lee; four daughters, Sally A. Doucette of Center Barnstead, Judy E. Perry of Fremont, Linda M. Ambrose of Exeter, and Beverly C. Joslyn of Center Barnstead; eleven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; a sister, Barbara Jelley of West Springfield, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton on Friday at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9.

Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery, Seabrook. If desired, donations may be made to the Exeter Assembly of God, P.O. Box 586, Exeter, NH 03833.

E. Marcia Reece

DURHAM - E. Marcia Reece, 88, formerly of Troy, N.Y., and more recently of 35 Church Hill, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, at Kirkwood Corners Nursing Home, Lee.

Born Nov. 5, 1913, in Clemens, N.Y., she was the daughter of Rufus and Edna (Ottenberg) Lape.

She graduated from Putnam High School and attended Sage College, School of Nursing. She worked as a registered nurse for many years at Samaritan Hospital in Troy. During World War II, she was supervisor of the hospital floor. She retired from Renesslaer Poly Institute in 1972.

The widow of Richard A. Reece, she is survived by three sons, Dr. Richard W. Reece and his wife, Sally, of Durham, Robert V. Reece and his wife, Susan, of Topsfield, Mass., David B. Reece and his wife, Linda, of Warwick, R.I.; three daughters, Susan P. Goodfellow and her husband, James, of Tuxedo Park, N.Y., Megan Patello and her husband, Ernest, of Pikes, Ala., Bronwyn Calkins and her husband, James, of Reno, Nev.; one sister, Esther Breed and her husband, Edward; two sisters-in-law, Jane Lape and her daughter, Jane Ellen Bertrand, and Ruth Lape; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at a later date in Troy, with burial to follow in the Elmwood Cemetery in Troy.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital, Memorial Fund, 789 Central Ave., Dover, NH 03820.
