NEWMARKET - Bernard Rayeski of Grant Road, and husband of Beverly (Norton) Rayeski, died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002, at his home in Newmarket surrounded by his family.

Arrangements will be announced by the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket.

Braden Verra

STRAFFORD - Braden "Brady" James Verra, 17, of Parker Mountain Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, at his home.

Born Nov. 18, 1985, in Portsmouth, he was the son of James and Cheryl (Fogarty) Verra.

He attended Strafford Elementary and Middle School and he was presently a junior at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Dover.

He played lacrosse and varsity football at St. Thomas.

His hobbies included mountain hiking, fishing, writing and playing the piano.

Survivors include his parents of Strafford; one brother, Guy Robert Verra of Strafford; one grandmother, Celia Verra of Flushing, N.Y.; three aunts, Diane Clemons of Barrington, Mary Ann Miller of Northvale, N.J., and Dalia Fogarty of Epping; many great aunts, great uncles and cousins.

Family and friends may call Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave., Dover. Funeral services will be held on Monday, Dec. 16, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, 150 Central Ave., Dover.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Thomas Aquinas High School, In memory of Brady Verra, 197 Dover Point Road, Dover, NH 03820.

Richard Warren

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine - Richard Dewhirst Warren, 88, of 5 Quarry Drive, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover, N.H..

Born in Lawrence, Mass., on Oct. 19, 1914, he was the son of Winfield and Hannah (Dewhirst) Warren.

He was a resident of Falmouth for 20 years. In 1971, he moved to Andover, Mass. He retired from the Andrew Wilson Company as an estimator.

He had been a resident of South Berwick since 1974.

He was a graduate of Northeastern University, Class of 1940.

He was a Mason of Lawrence and was active in DeMolay.

He enjoyed playing piano, woodworking, gardening, snow skiing and he skied Tuckerman’s Ravine in the late 1930s.

As a resident of Falmouth, he was an active member of the Foreside Community Church. While living in Andover, he was a member of South Church. Most recently, he had been a member of First Parish Church, Congregational, in Dover.

He joined the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of World War II. He was stationed at Pearl Harbor in 1943.

He was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Jean (Wilson) Warren, who died in 1992.

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Nancy Brown and her husband, Peter of Lynnfield, Mass., and Mrs. Elizabeth (Betsy) Carroll and her husband, John (Mick) of South Berwick; three grandchildren, Kristin Brown, Jennifer Decker and Jeffery Brown; two nieces; and one nephew.

Family and friends may call Monday, Dec. 16, from 1 to 2 p.m. with funeral services to follow at 2 p.m. at the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave., Dover, N.H. The Rev. James G. Pirie and the Rev. Abby Lynn Campbell of First Parish Church, Congregational, of Dover will officiate.

Memorial contributions in his memory may be made to the Maine Handicapped Skiing, Sunday River Ski Area, 7 Sundance Lane, Newry, ME 04261; or to the American Cancer Society, 360 State Route 101, Suite 501, Bedford, NH 03110-5032.

Marianna Wilder

RYE - Marianna "Mayna" Scammon Wilder, 81, of 105 Wallis Road, passed away peacefully at her residence early Thursday morning, Dec. 12, 2002.

She was born in Exeter on May 21, 1921, daughter of John J. and Harriet G. (Higgins) Scammon. She attended local schools and graduated from Portsmouth High School, Class of 1939, and furthered her education at Green Mountain College in Vermont.

In recent years, she could be found hostessing at BG’s Boat House Restaurant in Portsmouth. Known to many, she enjoyed countless hours associating with the locals who frequented the restaurant.

A homemaker and loving, devoted mother, she involved herself extensively in the lives of her children and nieces and nephews. Loved by all who knew her, she will surely be remembered for the many acts of kindness shown to those in need.

She volunteered tirelessly, often driving the senior citizen buses, transporting numerous cancer patients to medical appointments throughout the area and often into Boston as she expressed a genuine want to help others.

A member of the 3rd Friday Club, the Rye Over 55, she enjoyed playing bridge and regularly played with her close friends around the Seacoast.

She is survived by two sons, John Scammon Wilder and his wife, June of Pompano Beach Fla., and Robert Campbell Wilder and his wife, Tamara of Rye; a daughter, Nancy Harriet Wilder and her husband, Jerome Frazel of Chicago, Ill.; her brother, G. Richard Scammon of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; five grandchildren, William, Sara and Matthew Wilder and Paul and Michael Frazel; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

A celebration of her life will be held at the home of her son, Robert, at 105 Wallis Road in Rye today from 3 to 8 p.m. Family and friends are encouraged to visit and continue to share their memories with her family. Burial will be held privately in Cuttyhunk Island, Mass., at a later date.

In her memory, donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Susan Belyea
PORTSMOUTH - Susan Grace Belyea, 35, of 163 Blue Heron Drive, Osprey Landing, died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, at Portsmouth Regional Medical Center, due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Arrangements will be announced by the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave., Dover.

Leo Bourque

HOPATCONG, N.J. - Leo F. Bourque, 61, of 4 Masim Drive, died suddenly at his home on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003.

He was born in Biddeford, Maine, on Dec. 26, 1941, the son of Leo Bourque and Jacqueline P. (Lambert) Bourque.

He graduated from Exeter, N.H., High School, Class of 1959; McIntosh College of Dover, N.H.; and IBM Plus of Boston, Mass.

He was a computer systems representative with UNISYS, New York, for 35 years, retiring in 2002.

He was a member of the Sons of the Legion, Squadron 32, Exeter, N.H. He was an avid golfer.

He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas C. Manix of Exeter; three daughters, Mrs. Heidi Gleason of Northborough, Mass., Lisa Bourque of Berkley Heights and Heather Bourque of Queens, N.Y.; and a grandson, Nichols Gleason of Northborough.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, Feb. 3, from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Exeter Cemetery. Flowers acceptable.

Dorothy Foley

PORTSMOUTH - Dorothy Foley, 75, of 23 Sewall Road, beloved wife and mother, died peacefully on Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

She was a lifelong resident of Portsmouth, the daughter of John and Anne (Larkin) Hafey.

She graduated from Portsmouth High School, Class of 1945, and enjoyed attending her 50th class reunion. After graduation, she was employed at the Internal Revenue Service and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

She was a lifelong parishioner at the Church of the Immaculate Conception and a former member of the Portsmouth Garden Club.

During the past decade, she enjoyed traveling often with her family and the opportunity to be together with them whenever possible. She will be deeply missed by those who loved her.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 48 years, Lawrence P. Foley; her daughter, Carolyn Foley and her husband, Frederick Hains of Wellesley, Mass.; her son, L. Patrick Foley and his wife, Kathleen; her grandchildren, Audra, Elissa and Patrick Foley, all of Winchester, Mass.; and her sister, Anna Hafey of Portsmouth.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at the Church of the Immaculate Conception on Monday, Feb. 3, at 10 a.m. Visiting hours at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, on Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. Family flowers only.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Immaculate Conception Church, 98 Summer St., Portsmouth, NH 03801; or to the charity of one’s choice.

Edgar Gayhart

DOVER - Edgar Ernest Gayhart, 72, of 3 Morgan Way, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital after a period of failing health.

Born Jan. 20, 1931, in Boston, Mass., he was the son of John A. Gayhart and Mary (Rea) Gayhart.

He was a resident of Lebanon, Maine, for 22 years and moved to Dover in October 2002.

He was employed for 10 years as a machinist with Thompson Center Arms.

He was an avid fisherman in the area’s local lakes and streams and he enjoyed watching baseball.

Mr. Gayhart was a veteran in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954.

He is survived by three sons, Mark E. Gayhart and his wife, Linda of Dover, John A. Gayhart of Rochester and Edward E. Gayhart of Ogunquit, Maine; one daughter, Lorraine Gayhart of Raymond; one sister-in-law, Rose Cook and her husband, Donald of Lebanon; two sisters, Georgianna and Loye; two grandsons, Mark Gayhart Jr. and Anthony Gayhart; two granddaughters, Anna and Amanda Gayhart.

He was predeceased in 1995 by his loving wife of 39 years, Gilda (Zeoli) Gayhart.

Burial will take place in the spring in Pine Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in his memory may be made to the Cocheco Valley Humane Society, 262 County Farm Road, Dover, NH 03820; or to a charity of one’s choice.

Elinor Leavitt

ELIOT, Maine - Elinor Mildred Leavitt, 80, of Sturgeon Creek Drive, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at York Hospital.

A funeral will be held on Monday, Feb. 3, at 11 a.m. at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, with the Rev. Dr. David Avery officiating. Friends may visit with Mrs. Leavitt’s family from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will take place in the spring in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.

Family flowers only. Donations may be made in her memory to the York Hospital Home Health Care, Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Persis Plaisted

FLOYD, Va. - Persis M. Plaisted, 80, of Floyd, passed away Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center.

She was predeceased by her husband, Donald E. Plaisted; father, Dr. Carleton R. Metcalf; brother, Paul R. Metcalf; mother, Lucy Persis Parker; twin infant sons; and stepmother, May J. Metcalf.

She graduated from Concord Academy in Concord, Mass., in 1940 and from Marot Junior College in Thomson, Conn., in 1942. She received a bachelor of science degree in biology/medical technology from the University of New Hampshire in Durham, N.H., in 1947. It was here that she met and married Donald Ernest Plaisted.

She worked as a medical technologist registered by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists for over 50 years. She was employed by hospitals and clinics in New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Virginia. She also worked for the Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, N.H.

Mrs. Plaisted was very active in a wide range of volunteer and charitable endeavors. These included, among others, the American Red Cross, the American Heart Association, the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Unit No. 94, Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts, Civil Defense and the Durham Youth Sports Association. In addition, she was a founding and charter member of the Friends of Ordiorne Point Marine Education Center in Rye, N.H. If laboratory medicine was her first love, marine biology was her second.

Her passion for education, youth and the ocean led her to become an award-winning marine biology volunteer educator. She served as a marine
education docent for the University of New Hampshire Marine Extension Program for over 10 years. This program involved teaching marine biology programs in schools throughout northern New England. She was also a volunteer for marine education at the Maine Aquarium in Saco, Maine.

Her dedication to this field culminated in her becoming the first volunteer ever to be awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Northeast Marine Advisory Council for excellence in marine education.

Mrs. Plaisted and her family were very grateful for the many friendships she formed in southwest Virginia during the past 15 years. She was a member of the Pizzaro Ladies Group and the Floyd Chapter of T.O.P.S. She also maintained friendships with many fellow employees from Lewis-Gale Hospital.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Persis G. Savage McHugh and Thomas McHugh of Newmarket, N.H.; her son, Carleton A. Plaisted of Floyd; grandchildren, Linda Miller and Dr. Keith Miller
of Cumming, Ga., Ryan and Sarah Beth Plaisted of Floyd; brother, Carleton R. Metcalf of Basking Ridge, N.J.; sister and brother-in-law, Lucy and Tim Woodman of Concord, N.H.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday at the Horne Funeral Home. Interment will follow at a later date in Durham, N.H. The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Red Cross, 16 East Main St., Christiansburg, VA 24073.

The Plaisted family is being served by Horne Funeral & Cremation Service, Christiansburg, Va.

Robert Shine

SANFORD, Maine - Robert J. Shine, 57, of Sanford, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Visiting hours will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday at the LaFrance-Lambert Funeral Home, 29 Winter St., Sanford, where a funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday. A graveside service will be held in the spring in Oakdale Cemetery in Sanford.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the American Lung Association, 122 State St., Augusta, ME 04330.

George Young

KENNEBUNK, Maine - George F. Young, 84, a resident of Gendron Lane, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, at the Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford. He was the husband of Barbara Anne Shea Young.

Mr. Young was born in Lynn, Mass., on June 25, 1918, a son of Michael and Alice Baldwin Young.

He graduated from Lynn English High School and Northeastern University. He received his master’s degree in business administration from the University of Massachusetts.

Mr. Young was employed at the General Electric Company in Lynn, Mass., Somersworth, N.H., Pittsfield, Mass., and South Portland. From 1933 to 1980, his career with General Electric was in sales and management.

Mr. Young moved to the Kennebunk’s in 1980, where he became a member of the Webhannet Golf Club at Kennebunk Beach. He enjoyed a good game of golf and the outdoors.

He was predeceased by a sister, Barbara Marchessault.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara A. Young of Kennebunk; one brother, Gerald A Young of Titusville, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Private services will be held at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk, with the Rev. Laurent LaPlante officiating. Interment will be in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Somersworth, N.H., later in the spring.

Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
