Richard Purington Jr.

BARRINGTON - Richard B. Purington, Jr., 79, of 118 Ham Road, died Friday, April 11, 2003, at Frisbie Memorial Hospital after a long illness.

Born Aug. 19, 1923, in Dover, he was the son of the late Richard B. Purington, Sr. and Sara (Hoitt) Purington.

He had lived in Barrington since 1970 after moving from Rochester.

He was employed at New England Telephone as a troubleshooter for 35 years.

He served in the U.S. Navy and was a Navy diver stationed in the Pacific. He was a member of Humane Lodge #21 F. & AM in Rochester and a member of the Disabled American Veterans.

Members of his family include his wife of 28 years, Doris (Drown) Purington of Barrington; his daughters, Vicky Tuttle and her husband Robert of Port Charlotte, Fla., Nancy Clavette and her husband Norman of Rollinsford; his son, Richard B. Purington III of Florida; a stepdaughter, Patricia Hakala of Sanford, Maine; a steoson, Gary Sears and wife Sherry of Rochester; four grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren; many great great grandchildren; his sisters, Muriel Brennan of Eugene, OR and Susan Conner and her husband Charles of Denton, N.J.; and several nieces and nephews.

There will be no calling hours.

A private memorial service will be held at R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., Rochester, NH 03867. Burial will be in the NH Veteran Cemetery in Boscawen.

Margaret J. Richardson

DOVER - Margaret J. Richardson, 73, of Dover, passed away Friday, March 28, 2003, at the Edgewood Center in Portsmouth.

She was the widow of Johnstone (Jack) Richardson Jr. who died on Jan. 22, 2001.

Graveside services will be held on Monday, April 14, 2003 in the Pine Hill Cemetery, 131 Central Avenue, Dover, NH 03820. The Reverend Anne Robertson of the St. John’s United Methodist Church, Dover will be officiating. Funeral Services are under the direction of Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Avenue, Dover, NH 03820.

Joseph Selfridge

ALTON - Joseph P. Selfridge, 77, of Chestnut Cove Road, died April 10, 2003, at Blair House in Tewksbury, Mass.

He was born May 21, 1925, in Cambridge, Mass., the son of the late Walter and Catherine (Bachose) Selfridge.

He had resided in Alton since 1982, having come from Billerica, Mass.

He was a U.S. Naval veteran, having served for three years during WWII in the Normandy invasion. He was the recepient of two Bronze Stars.

He was a retired foreman, having been employed with the Highway Department with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for 35 years.

He is survived by his wife Doris M. (Trepanier) Selfridge of Alton, NH; three children, Richard J. Selfridge of Derry, NH, Barbara J. Bender of Alton, NH, and Joanne Kinnear of Billerica, Mass; five grandchildren, Derek, Aaron, Nicholas, Candace and Ryan and two great grandchildren, Derek and Cameron; three brothers, Walter E. Selfridge of Nashua, NH; Robert Selfridge of Westford, Mass., and William Selfridge of Nashua, NH; one sister, Ann Edner of Banning, Calif.; also many nieces andnephews.

Calling hours are Monday evening from 7-9 pm at C.E. Peaslee and Son Alton Funeral Home School St. Alton, NH. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday April 15, 2003 at St. Cecilia’s Church So. Main Street, Wolfeboro, NH at 10:00 am with Fr. Richard Wegman, as celebrant.
Interment will follow at the New Riverside Cemetery in Alton, NH. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his memory to the Alzheimer’s Association 10 Ferry St. Concord, NH 03301.

Shirley Stackpole

EPPING - Shirley Viola Stackpole, 84, of 290 Calef Highway, died Friday at Rochester Manor in Rochester.

She had been a resident of Epping for over 32 years, previously residing in Kingston. She recently moved to Rochester to live with her son and his family.

She was born in Haverhill, Mass., on March 1, 1919, the daughter of William and Mattie (Thompson) Woodworth.

She worked many years for Western Electric in Andover, Mass. prior to retirement.

Her husband and her loved to sing, and she was a member of the Sweet Adelines in Plaistow for a number of years. She enjoyed bingo and bowling, and was especially fond of her cat Patches.

Surviving family members include her beloved husband of over 58 years, Kenneth Stackpole of Rochester; a daughter, Cheryl Rose of Senaca, SC; a son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Donna Stackpole of Rochester; a sister, Majorie Haynes of Florida; seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial gathering will be held at a later date at her son’s home in Rochester. There are no visiting hours. Arrangements are by H.J. Grondin & Son Funeral & Cremation Services, 177 North Main St., Rochester.

Zelma Royce

NEW DURHAM - Zelma (Gray) Royce, 80, of Birch Hill Road in New Durham, died Thursday, April 10, 2003, at her home.

She was born Sept. 24, 1922, in Farmington, the daughter of the late Samuel J. and Mildred R. (Marshall) Gray.

She had resided in New Durham since 1970, having come from Farmington, where she had been a shoeworker at local shoe factories.

She was a member of the Milton Assembly of God, having taught Sunday School there.

She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, knitting, plastic canvas and especially enjoyed babysitting her grandchildren.

Survivors include a daughter, Dottie D. Gibbons of Mirror Lake, NH; two sons, William Connors of Wilbon, Fla. and Robert Connors of Fayetteville, N.C.; six grandchildren and several great grandchildren; foour brothers, Sam Irving Gray of Farmington, Chester Gray and Wilbur Gray, both of Rochester and Arlard Gray of N.C.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Frederick Connors, Jr. on Mar. 17, 2001 and also by four brothers and a sister.

Calling hour are Monday evening from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at C.E. Peaslee and Son Funeral Home, 32 Central St. Farmington, NH. The funeral service will be on Tuesday, April 15, 2003, at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Alfred Weeden, pastor of the Milton Assembly of God, officiating.
Interment will be later in the spring at the John C. Shirley Cemetery in New Durham, NH.

Barbara Bartlett
Eliot, Maine - Barbara L. Bartlett, 80, of 71 Brixham Road died Friday, June 13, 2003, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover, N.H.

Born in North Conway, N.H., she was the daughter of Ralph S. and Edith (Hodgdon) Wiggin.

She was a longtime resident of Eliot, living here since her youth. She was a graduate of Eliot High School.

She was a homemaker and had worked at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard during World War II.

She was a communicant of St. Michael’s Church.

Family members include one son, Arthur W. Bartlett, Jr., of Eliot; one daughter, Linda M. Beaudet, and her husband Gerard of South Berwick; one sister, Madeline Paul of Acton; three grandchildren, Steven M. Beaudet and Scott M. Beaudet of South Berwick and Amy L. Khan of Manchester, N.H.; and one great-granddaughter, Artemisia Khan of Manchester.

She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur W. Bartlett Sr., on Sept. 27, 1987, and by two brothers, Robert and Charles Wiggin.

Relatives and friends may call Sunday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at McIntire-McCooey Funeral Home, 301 Main St., South Berwick. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Michael’s Church with the Rev. H.J. Cameron, pastor, as celebrant. Burial will follow in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Eliot.

David Colby

PITTSFIELD - David Jason Colby, 47, of Mountain Road, died unexpectedly Friday, June 6, 2003.

He was the son of Lee Colby Sr. of Penacook and Barbara (Colby) Johnson of Bradenton, Fla.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

He worked as a union carpenter for many years.

He was president of the Colby Racing Team of pro-stock racing. He was an avid stock car racing fan. He loved restoring antique muscle cars with his two sons.

Survivors include his father, Lee Colby Sr., and his wife, Alice, of Penacook; his mother, Barbara Johnson, and her husband, Robert, of Bradenton, Fla.; his wife of 27 years, Cinthia (Rheaune) Colby of Pittsfield; a son, Casey Colby of Matthews, N.C.; six siblings, Deborah Russell and her husband, Mitchell, of Penacook, Donna Genest of Salisbury, Thomas Colby and his wife, Donna, of Manchester, his twin sister, Dianne Main, and her husband, Ron, of Stratham; Lee Colby Jr. of Penacook, Scott Colby and his wife, Sandra, of West Concord; a stepbrother, Richard Tewksbury of Penacook; two stepsisters, Candice Rolfe of Henniker and Dorothy Steenbeke of Penacook; two grandchildren, Russell Colby and Acasis Colby; and many nieces and nephews.

A son, Jason Colby, also died Friday, June 6, 2003, by his side.

Eleanor P. Griffin

ELIOT, Maine - Eleanor P. Griffin, 84, of Staples Street in Eliot, died Thursday June 12, 2003, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital after a long period of declining health.

Born March 26, 1919 in Sweden, Maine, she was the daughter of Christopher E. and Helen (Crafts) Nelson.

In November 1948, she married her loving husband of 54 years, Bradley J. Griffin. They made their home in Kittery Point for a short time after their marriage before moving to Eliot where they raised their daughter and made their home together for over 52 years.

She was employed for many years as a bookkeeper for Goodwin Oil. She was an active leader in the Scouting program when her daughter was growing up.

She enjoyed needlepoint, reading and gardening and was a wonderful baker, always willing to share her fresh baked cookies with the children in the neighborhood.

She is survived by her family, who will miss her dearly. They include her husband, Bradley J. Griffin of Eliot; their daughter, Linda Pipher, and her husband, Richard, of Eliot and their son, Scott Pipher; three aunts Blandine Gould of Dover-Foxcroft, Maine, Beulah Stromback of Hartland, Maine, and Annie Wells of East Longmeadow, Mass.

A funeral will be held on Tuesday, June 17 at 3 p.m. at J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, Maine 03904. Friends may visit with Mrs. Griffin’s family from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. before the service. Family flowers only.

Donations may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society, 1599 Clifton Road, N.E., Atlanta, GA 30329. Arrangements are entrusted to J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

James F. Herlihy

SAN LEANDRO, Calif. - James Francis Herlihy, 76, passed away after a long illness in San Leandro on Wednesday, June 11, 2003.

Born February 18, 1926, in Dover, N.H., he was the youngest of 10 children to Patrick C. and Rosann Herlihy.

He was a graduate of Dover High School and the University of New Hampshire.

He lived in San Leandro for 43 years, was a past member of the San Leandro Library Board and a past member of the School Board. He was a member of the Elks and was an active member of the Bayfair Gold Key Club.

He retired from Safeway stores as an accounting supervisor. He joined the U.S. Navy during World War II and served in England, France and Germany.

He leaves his wife Ann and son Jim Jr., both of San Leandro; his brother, Robert Herlihy of Dover; his godson David Herlihy; and many nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by his many friends and relatives.

Family and friends are invited to attend funeral services at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, June 16 at Chapel of the Chimes Memorial Park, 32992 Mission Blvd., Hayward, Calif. 94544.

Isabella M. Hokinson

ALLENSTOWN - Isabella M. Hokinson, 95, of 20 Pine Acres Road died Thursday, June 12, 2003, at her home.

She was born in Bradford, R.I., on May 5, 1908, a daughter of the late James and Annie (Edmond) Courage.

She had lived with her daughter and son-in-law in Allenstown for the past 3½ years and had formerly resided in Concord for more than 60 years.

She had worked as a hostess at The Eagle Hotel in Concord for more than 30 years.

She enjoyed camping, knitting, braiding rugs and crafts. In addition, she was a meticulous housekeeper.

She attended the United Methodist Church in Concord.

She was predeceased by her husband, Russell E. Hokinson, who died in 1983.

Family members include her daughter and son-in-law, Sandra J. and Frank T. Harper of Allenstown; her son and daughter-in-law, Neil and Clara Hokinson of Berwick, Maine; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A visiting hour will be held on Monday, June 16 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the Smith & Heald Funeral Home, 63 Elm St., Milford. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Milford.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Concord Regional Visiting Nurses Association, 250 Pleasant St., Box 1797, Concord, NH 03302. Smith & Heald Funeral Home, Milford, is in charge of arrangements.

Michael E. Ladisheff

BOCA GRANDE, Fla. - Michael E. Ladisheff, 48, of Boca Grande, Fla., died Monday, June 2 at Englewood Hospital in Englewood, Fla.

He was born in Rochester on Jan. 30, 1954, the son of Walter and Dolores (Roy) Ladisheff. He was a graduate of Dover High School and lived in Dover for 45 years before moving to Boca Grande three years ago.

He was a former employee of the Dover School Department cleaning staff and recently owned and operated his own janitorial company.

He is survived by his father, Walter Ladisheff, of Dover; two brothers, Mark Ladisheff and his wife, Paula, and David Ladisheff of Dover; a sister, Kathy Ladisheff, of Dover; and a niece, April Ladisheff of Kansas; and aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was predeceased by his mother, Dolores (Roy) Ladisheff, who died July 21, 1998.

Relatives and friends are invited to call Wednesday, June 18 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., with a memorial service being held at 8 p.m. with Father Paul Ruzzo, associate pastor of St. Joseph Church, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make a contribution in Michael’s name to the charity of one’s choice.

Peter McDonough

PORTLAND, Ore. - Peter Redden McDonough, 56, passed away March 16, 2003, in Portland, Oregon.

Born in Portsmouth, N.H. on June 2, 1946, to John McDonough and Mary (Redden) McDonough, he attended schools in Portsmouth and graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Dover, N.H. in 1966.

He was a veteran of the Vietnam War. For the past 30 years, he lived and worked in Portland, Ore.

While working at the Multnomah Athletic Club as a custodian, he received numerous employee awards and was regarded as hard working, reliable and dependable by his supervisors and co-workers. He also worked part-time at the Goose Hollow Inn.

When not working, he spent countless hours as a freelance photographer. One of his favorite places to photograph was the Japanese Tea Garden in Portland.

He is survived by a brother Paul (Yona) McDonough of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two sisters, Roni (Ernest) Brown, Strafford, N.H. and Sister Natalie McDonough, of Denver, Colo.

He was much loved and will be greatly missed by nieces, nephews, cousins, friends as well as numerous felines.

A graveside service will be held at Calvary Cemetery in Portsmouth on Monday, Aug. 11th at 11:00 a.m. Memorial gifts in his name may be sent to the Japanese Garden, Pathway of Stones, P.O. Box 3847, Portland, Ore. 97208.
