ROBERT EARL WAER, SR.
“Bob” a 99 Year Old Newspaperman died February 25, 2010 after two surgeries. Bob had celebrated his 99th birthday in November 2009 at the “99” Restaurant in Deptford hosted by his Grandson Brian Waer. Bob and his wife Anna, both born in Philadelphia and married for 73 years, have lived in Audubon for 50 years. They still did all the maintenance and upkeep of their home, and Anna drives, but only for short trips in nice weather. Bob and Anna Waer celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary December 12 of 2009. Bob worked for four Delaware Valley newspapers: the Courier-Post, the Philadelphia Record, the Daily News and the Evening Bulletin. He began as an “Office Boy” at $7 per week, then moved to Cub Reporter and later to the Art Department finishing as the News Art Editor. His first job at age fourteen was working from 6AM to 6PM in a hat factory earning less than 50 cents per day. His primary hobby was oil and water color painting – many of his paintings decorate the walls of their home. Bob used to run on the U Penn track with the track coach decades before the gym craze caught on. He loved boxing (he still has both a heavy and speed bag in his basement) and recently asked us to locate new practice gloves as he had worn out his old pair. Being at the right place at the right time, Bob saved four lives – two from drowning and two from choking. Before macular degeneration reduced his vision, Bob was able to repair virtually anything. He studied automobile ignition and carburetion, repaired lawn mowers, and using his artistic ability, could blend paints to match any color. He frequently said that jobs that used to take a few minutes to complete now required much more time since his vision deteriorated. In addition to his wife Anna, he is survived by two children: Robert E. Waer (Cecilie) Jr. of Mexico, Pa., and Barbara W. Mattison of Collingswood, five grandchildren: Stephanie Mattison Petrie of Flagstaff, AZ, Brian S. Waer (Dawn) of Laurel Springs, NJ, Lorie L. Mattison of Philadelphia, Carolyn Klett (Ed) of South Carolina, and William H. Mattison (Dalia) of Medford, NJ and seven great-grandchildren: Melissa, Nicolas, Billy, and Amanda Waer, Morgan D. Petrie, Katrina and Kenny Klett. Relatives and friends are invited to greet the family on Monday, March 1st from 10:30 AM to 12 PM. at the Creran Funeral Home, 400 White Horse Pike, Oaklyn NJ 08107. Bob’s funeral service will be held at 12:00 Noon. Interment will follow in Locustwood Memorial Park, Cherry Hill NJ. (www.creranfh.com)
