Mabel "Brownie" Williams
RARITAN TWP. - Mabel "Brownie" Williams died Jan. 16, 2003, at home. She was 94. Born in Houston, she was the daughter of George Hunter and Adeline Shallock Brown. She worked for many years at the former Williams Brothers grocery store on Main Street in Flemington, then was a secretary at Ditschman/Flemington Ford in Raritan Township. Mrs. Williams was a longtime volunteer at Hunterdon Medical Center. There are no immediate survivors. A funeral service was held Jan. 21 at Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home in Flemington, followed by burial in Glenwood Cemetery in Houston. Eugene 'Spanky' Spangenberg
SEFFNER, Fla. - Eugene "Spanky" Spangenberg died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, at University Community Hospital in Seffner. He was 72. Born in Pontiac, Mich., he was the son of Lyle and Martha Spangenberg. He resided in High Bridge before moving to Seffner 16 years ago. He worked as a construction laborer and was still working. He is survived by his wife, Karen Spangenberg; one son, Steve Spangenberg of Seffner; two stepsons, Bryan Biase of Seffner and Philip Biase of Lexington, Md.; one sister, Peggy Stoors of Horton, Mich., and two grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Jan. 30 at Serenity Meadows Funeral Home in Riverview, Fla. Mr. Spangenberg's body was cremated. Peter William Terry
LEBANON TWP. - Peter William Terry died on Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at Valley View Manor Health Care Center in Alexandria Township. He was 86. Born in Plainfield, he was the son of Harvey William and Emma Garretson Terry. He lived in Scotch Plains before moving to Lebanon Township 33 years ago. He served in the 87th Infantry Division of the Army, attaining the rank of technician fifth grade. He was a medic and mechanic and served in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a former head custodian at Howard Brunner School in Scotch Plains. His wife, Helen Schermerhorn Terry, died in 2000. Three brothers, Alfred, John and Arthur, also died earlier. He is survived by his daughter, Marilyn Terry of Lebanon Township, and a brother, Elwood Terry of South Plainfield. Funeral services are private under the direction of Coughlin Funeral Home in Califon. Visitation is Feb. 1 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home. Frieda A. Ubel
RARITAN TWP. - Frieda A. Ubel died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, in Hunterdon Medical Center. She was 67. Born in Ringoes, she was the daughter of Martin and Marie Markert Hack. She lived in the Flemington area all her life. She graduated from Flemington High School in 1953. She retired in 1997 from working at the family business, Ubel's Farm Stand on Route 12 in Raritan Township. Surviving are her husband, Alfred Ubel; two daughters, Kathy Ubel Pohl of Orlando, Fla., and Lynne Ubel Schneider of Raritan Township; a son, Martin of Raritan Township; a sister, Marie Day of Raritan Township, and eight grandchildren. Funeral services were held Jan. 29 at Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home in Flemington, followed by a private burial. Bernice M. Upton
READINGTON TWP. - Bernice M. Upton died on Jan. 23, 2003, at Rolling Hills Care Center in Clinton Township. She was 75. Born in Maplewood, she was the daughter of Edwin and Madeline Judd Knorr. She lived in Somerville before moving to Readington Township in 1958. She graduated from Columbia High School in South Orange and Cedar Crest College in Allentown, Pa. Mrs. Upton was a laboratory technician for RCA Corp. in Branchburg until her retirement in 1987. She was a horse-riding enthusiast, specializing in dressage. She volunteered with the Somerset Hills Handicapped Riders. She traveled extensively throughout the world as an animal-rights supporter and advocate. Her husband, William M. Upton, died in 1989. Mrs. Upton had no immediate survivors. Services were held Jan. 29 at Robert L. Ford Funeral Home in Flemington. Interment was at St. Magdalen's Cemetery in Flemington. Mehroo R. Patel
CALIFON - Mehroo R. Driver Patel died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, at Harbor Side Health Care at Woods Edge in Bridgewater. She was 89. Born in Bombay, India, she came to the United States in 1991. She lived in Millington before moving to Califon eight years ago. Mrs. Patel was a homemaker. Her husband, Rutton Patel, died in 1992. She is survived by a son, Farrokh "Frank" Patel of Califon, and three grandchildren. Services were held Jan. 28 at Branchburg Funeral Home.

Foster V. Querry
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Foster V. Querry died Jan. 5, 2003, at home. He was 94. He was born in High Bridge, where he lived until moving to St. Petersburg in 1971. He was the High Bridge superintendent of streets and the water department. Mr. Querry was a member of Host Lodge 6, Lodge Council Chapter Consistory Scottish Rite and Crescent Temple Shrine. He was a Protestant. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mae Querry; a daughter, Carolyn M. Smith of St. Louis, Mo.; a sister Margaret Brooks of St. Petersburg; two grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Gee & Sorensen Funeral Home in St. Petersburg was in charge of arrangements.

Henry P. Wisowaty
DELAWARE TWP. - Henry P. Wisowaty died Jan. 22, 2003, at his home. He was 76. Born in Scranton, Pa., he was the son of Gus and Stella Wisowaty. He lived in Delaware Township for over 45 years ago. He served in the Navy during World War II. He was a heavy-equipment operator for 3M Corp. in Hillsborough before retiring in 1992. He was also a self-employed watchmaker. He was a member of the Sergeantsville VFW Post. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Marianna Wisowaty, a son, Stanley Wisowaty of Danville, Pa.; and three grandchildren. Marie Loehwing
SEMINOLE, Fla. - Marie Liegeois Loehwing died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at Largo Medical Center in Largo, Fla. She was 85. Mrs. Loehwing was the mother of Elaine Gorman of Flemington. Born in Palisades Park, she was the daughter of Ernest and Marie Liegeois. She lived in Bergen County until she moved to Florida 25 years ago. She graduated from Leonia High School. She worked as a bookkeeper in New York City until World War II began, and then retired to become a homemaker. A son, Kenneth Loehwing, died earlier. In addition to her daughter, she is survived by her husband, Robert E. Loehwing; another daughter, Carol Ciullo of River Vale; three sisters, Ernestine Andersen of Vernon, Marguerite Johannssen of California and June Andersen of Portales, N.M.; five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. A funeral service was held Saturday at Becker Funeral Home in Westwood, followed by burial in George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus. Stanley C. Korap
STROUDSBURG, Pa. - Stanley C. Korap died on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, in Bear Creek Health Center in Bear Creek, Pa. He was 80. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. to Charles and Mary Tenza Korap, he resided in Delaware Township for more than 50 years before moving to Stroudsburg in 2001. He was a masseur in New York City for many years and later was a school bus driver before retiring in 1994. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in Europe. His wife, F. Ruth Henne Korap, died in 1993. Surviving are his daughter, Jan Reimer of Stroudsburg. Services were scheduled Jan. 30 at 11 a.m. at Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home in Flemington. Interment was to be at Locktown Cemetery. Calling hours were Jan. 30 from 10 to 11 a.m.

Tiberio A. Rocco
CAPE MAY - Tiberio A. Rocco died Jan. 20, 2003, at Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital in Middle Township. He was 68. Born in Lambertville to Carmen and Angelina Shivone Rocco, he lived in Cape May for the past 28 years. He was a self-employed cook and owned various restaurants over the years, including T's Place in Lambertville, Villanova Restaurant in Wildwood Crest for 14 years and the Amish Lantern Restaurant in Strasburg, Pa. He was a member of the First Assembly of God in Cape May. His four brothers, Carmen, Tony, Sam and Louis, all died before him. Surviving are his wife, Kathryn Parent Rocco; his son, Tiberia of Hamilton Township; two sisters, Josephine Nalence and Mary Williamson, both of Lambertville; four grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter. A services was held Jan. 25 at the Garefino Funeral Home in Lambertville and a memorial service was held Jan. 28 at the First Assembly of God in Cape May. Burial was private.

Charles M. Sipler
HUNLOCK TWP., Pa. - Charles M. Sipler died Jan. 18, 2003, at home. He was 84. He was born in Reaville, the son of Mary Sipler, and lived in Hunlock Creek, Hunlock Township. Pa. He was employed by 3M Co. in Belle Mead and at the Frenchtown General Store. He was an Army veteran of World War II. A sister, Florence, and two brothers, Clarence and Alvin, died earlier. He is survived by his wife, Sandra Evarts Sipler, at home; eight daughters, Barbara Hone of Ringoes, Mary Eden of Akins, S.C., Nadine Snyder of Bridgewater, Johanna Erving of Nashville, Ga., Viola Crutchley of Lakewood, Roberta Lamoreaux of Hunlock Creek, Marian Sipler and Carol Macialek, both of Phillipsburg, and Stella Opdyke of Stockton; five sons, Charles M. Sipler Jr. of Hillsboro, Edwin Sipler of Reading, Pa., Mark Lenley of Tobyhanna, Pa., Robert Mazeika of Phillipsburg, and Steve Winger of Mocanaqua, Pa.; two sisters, Beatrice and Martha Sipler, both of New Jersey; four brothers, Rudy, Edwin and Kenny Sipler, all of New Jersey, and William Sipler, of Pennsylvania; 30 grandchildren, and 30 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Jan. 21 at Clarke Piatt Funeral Home in Hunlock Creek. Burial was at Evarys Cemetery in Hunlock Creek, Plymouth Township, Pa.

Aksel Tange
RARITAN TWP. - Aksel Tange died on Monday, Jan. 27, 2003 at Hunterdon Medical Center. He was 83. Born in Denmark to Severin and Karen Overgaard Tange, he formerly resided in Ringoes and then in Raritan Township for 35 years. He was a farmer in Ringoes, then was employed by the county Building Maintenance Department in Flemington, retiring in 1981. Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Dorothy Hill Tange; two daughters, Kim Cisneros of Jacksonville, Fla., and Maren Murphy of Flemington; a sister, Hilda Zachar of Delaware Township; three grandchildren, and one great-grandchildren. Services will be held Jan. 31 at 2 p.m. at Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home in Flemington. Interment will follow in the Locust Grove Cemetery in Quakertown. Calling hours were scheduled Jan. 30 from 7 to 9 p.m.

Paul S. Wyant
PHILLIPSBURG - Paul S. Wyant died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at Warren Hospital in Phillipsburg. He was 69. He was born in Warren Glen, the son of Alfred and Pearl Bates Wyant. He was a manager at Johnny's Truck Stop in Union Township for more than 20 years. He was also a truck driver. He was a member of the Order of the Fleas in Easton and the Teamsters Union. He served in the Marine Corps. His wife, June M. Allen Wyant, died in 1994. A brother, Roger, and a sister, Edna Crawn, both died earlier. He is survived by a daughter, Pauline Wyant of Easton; two sons, Harry Walters of Williams Township, Pa. and Frank Walters of Phillipsburg; a brother, Daniel Wyant of Bloomsbury; four sisters, Alfreda Lutzi, Sarah Wyant, and Kay McAllister, all of Easton, and Arlene Gunderman of Nazareth, Pa.; and many grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Service times will be announced by Ashton Funeral Home in Easton.

Fred Levasseur
GLEN GARDNER - Fred Joseph Levasseur died Jan. 21, 2003, at Rolling Hills Care Center in Clinton Township. He was 78. Born in Van Buren, Maine, he was the son of Simon and Gladys Leveque Levasseur. He moved to Glen Gardner 43 years ago. Mr. Levasseur was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II, serving from 1943 to 1945. He achieved the rank of corporal, served in Guam and in the invasion of Iwo Jima. After the war, Mr. Lavasseur was a chef for the former Kirt's Diner in Clinton. Early in his adult life, he worked for the Bangor-Aroostook Railroad in Maine. He was a member of Laborers Union Local 472 in Newark. He was a member of Immaculate Conception R.C. Church in Annandale. He was a member of the High Bridge Knights of Columbus. He belonged to the Glen Gardner VFW. Two brothers died earlier. He is survived by his wife, Mildred Page Levasseur; two sons, Milton Levasseur of Glen Gardner and Victor Levasseur of Union Township; two daughters, Carol Sciacca of High Bridge and Rebecca Gromlowitz of Hampton; two sisters, and nine grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was celebrated Friday at Immaculate Conception R.C. Church in Annandale. Interment was at Evergreen Cemetery in Clinton. Arrangements are under the direction of Scarponi Bright Funeral Home in Lebanon.

Thomas J. McKenna
STOCKTON - Thomas J. McKenna died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at home. He was 70. Born in Pittsburgh, he was the son of Francis and Gertrude Foley McKenna. Mr. McKenna lived in Hasbrouck Heights for many years before moving to Stockton 10 years ago. He had a master's degree in theology from St. Michael's Seminary in Union City. Mr. McKenna recently retired after 12 years as the executive director of the ARC of Hunterdon (Association for Retarded Citizens) in Clinton Township. Before that, he had a variety of occupations. He was a Catholic priest for 15 years, then served as a promotion manager on a religious radio station, district supervisor for adult training centers for the state Division of Developmental Disabilities, and acting director of Human Services for Bergen County. He once summarized his philosophy about working with disabled people as follows: "Helping means to empower the person you help, so you don't take with one hand what you give with the other. You don't do for - you stand with." Mr. McKenna was a communicant and served as a lector for St. Agnes Catholic Church in Stockton. He was a former member of the Stockton Board of Education. His brothers, Jerome and Patrick McKenna, died earlier. Mr. McKenna is survived by his wife, Aida Tinio McKenna; a daughter, Rebecca McKenna of New York City; and four brothers, the Rev. Jerome McKenna, C.P., of West Virginia, Brother Robert McKenna, C.P., of the Philippines, Joseph McKenna of Pittsburgh and Regis McKenna of Sunnyvale, Calif. A funeral liturgy will be celebrated Feb. 1 at 11 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Lambertville. Entombment will follow in St. Magdalen's Mausoleum in Flemington. Joan Monsul
LEBANON - Joan Monsul, a career nurse and the wife of a former Somerville area doctor, died peacefully Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at Somerset Medical Center in Somerville. She was 75. Her daughter, Virginia, is the wife of Hunterdon County's new prosecutor. J. Patrick Barnes referred to her critical condition in his remarks following his swearing-in Friday. He said she was clinging to life to see her son-in-law assume his new job. Mrs. Monsul was born in Mattoon, Ill., and lived there for 18 years. She served as a cadet nurse in the Army during World War II, and graduated from St. Luke's School of Nursing in Chicago in 1948. She was the hospital's head nurse of obstetrics for 10 years from 1948 to 1958, before moving to work in San Francisco General Hospital for one year. Mrs. Monsul moved to New Jersey and lived in the Somerville area for 32 years and in Lebanon since 1992. She worked at Christ the King R.C. Church in Manville from 1982 to 1999 as a bookkeeper for both the church and school. She was an active member of both. She was also a member and past president of the Christ the King Church Altar Rosary Society, and a volunteer with the Somerset Medical Center Women's Auxiliary and the Somerville Board of Education. Mrs. Monsul was the first-year recipient of the Somerville PBA Community Award, a 1996 recipient of the Regina Nostra Award from the Diocese of Metuchen, and a member of both the Women's Military Service Memorial and the alumni association of St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing. She was the wife of the late Dr. Robert Monsul. Her daughter and son-in-law gave Mrs. Monsul three grandchildren. A viewing was to be held Jan. 29 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Ketuisky Funeral Home in Manville. The funeral was scheduled Jan. 30 at 9:45 a.m. from the funeral home, followed by a 10:30 Mass at Christ the King R.C. Church. Burial will follow at St. Bernard'sw Cemetery in Bridgewater. Stefan Skalij
WHITEHOUSE STATION - Stefan Skalij died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at Harborside Health Care in Bridgewater Township. He was 89. He was born in Poland on Jan. 9, 1914. He came to the United States in 1948 and lived in Whitehouse Station for 55 years. Mr. Skalij worked for the Readington Township Public Works Department for 17 years before retiring in 1971. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes R.C. Church in Whitehouse Station. He is survived by his wife, Katherine Skalij, and a daughter, Ann Hisko of Whitehouse Station. A funeral liturgy was held Jan. 28 at the church. Burial was at Readington Reformed Church Cemetery. Kearns Funeral Home in Whitehouse made arrangements. Walter Wintermute
ANNANDALE - Walter J. Wintermute died Jan. 30, 2003 at Hunterdon Care Center in Raritan Township. He was 95. Born in Newton, the son of John and Anna Johns Wintermute, he lived in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. before moving to Annandale in 1978. Mr. Wintermute attended Newark College of Engineering. He was a telephone repairman for New York Telephone for 42' years. Mr. Wintermute was a member of the Lions Club in Dobbs Ferry. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. His wife Winifred Wintermute, and his brother William O. Wintermute died earlier. He is survived by two daughters, Theresa Parthemore of West Bath, Maine and Anita Gardner of Stillwater; four grandchildren; and Stella Garbus, his companion of many years. Interment was in Newton Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of the Martin Funeral Home in Clinton.

Donald G. Vaughn
GILBERT, Pa. - Donald G. Vaughn died Jan. 30, 2003 at the Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg, Pa. He was 74. He was the father of Michael Vaughn of Bethlehem Township. He was born in Shirleysburg, Pa., a son of William Paul and Lena Ramsey Vaughn. In addition to his son, he is survived by his wife of 53 years, Josephine Scalzo Vaughn; two sons, Mark Vaughn of Finesville and Paul Vaughn of Washington; a daughter, Coleen Vaughn of Sutton, N.H.; a sister Betty Cole of Kresgeville, Pa.; and seven grandchildren. Mr. Vaughn served in the Coast Guard on the USS Carney during World War II. He was an entrepreneur who ran a number of businesses, including an antique business. Memorial services were held Saturday, under the direction of the Kresge Funeral Home in Brodheadsville, Pa.

Elizabeth M. Todd
FLEMINGTON - Elizabeth M. Todd died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003 in Hunterdon Medical Center. She was 75. Born in Hudson County, she was the daughter of David and Louise Tomek Todd. She lived in Ridgefield Park before moving to Flemington nine years ago. She was employed by Bankers Trust Co. in New York City for 45 years and retired in 1986. She is survived by two sisters, Ursula Newman and Mildred Todd, both of Carlstadt; and four brothers, David Todd of Atlantic City, Robert Todd of Bayville, John Todd of Michigan and James Todd of Ridgefield Park. A liturgy service was held at St. Magdalen Catholic Church in Flemington. Burial was private, under the direction of the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home in Flemington. FLEMINGTON - Thomas L. Douglas Jr. died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003 at Hackensack University Medical Center. He was 56. He was born in Glen Ridge, the son of Thomas L. and Catherine Lena Gillman Douglas, and resided in Somerset before moving to Flemington 14 years ago. He graduated from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, in 1977 with a bachelor's degree. He worked for Merck and Co. in Readington Township for the past 35 years and was its director of taxes. He was a former basketball coach for the Flemington-Raritan Youth Association and a softball coach for the Flemington Flames. He served an enlistment in the Army as Military Police during the Vietnam War. He was a communicant of St. Magdalen's Catholic Church in Flemington. He was a kind, loving, and generous husband and father who will be sadly missed by all. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed gardening, basketball and football. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Maryann Ubal Douglas; two daughters, Christina and Traci Douglas, both at home; and a sister, Linda Cross of Middletown. II and Kenneth, both of Phillipsburg; two daughters, Levona Louise Pasori of Phillipsburg and Heather Jamie Hendershot at home; two brothers, Manch of Whitehouse Station and Edward of Davenport, Fla.; three sisters, Bertha French of Sullivan, N.H., Eleanor Ruggini of Raritan and Ruth Nadeau of Marshalls Creek, Pa.; and two grandchildren Services were held on Saturday at Scarponi-Bright Funeral Home in Lebanon. Interment was at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Washington Township.

Woodrow Owens
RINGOES - Woodrow 'Woody' Owens died Jan. 28, 2003 at the Hunterdon Care Center in Raritan Township. He was 88. Born in Pittston Township, Pa. to Frank and Elizabeth Legg Owens, he operated a gas station in Mountainside from 1945 to 1976. He also owned and operated Woody's Texaco gas station in Ringoes from 1960 to 1990. He was an avid bowler and enjoyed visiting his farm in Pennsylvania. His sisters, Edna Otty and Ruth Batiski, both died before him. Surviving are his wife, Helen Ratayski Owens; two daughters, Frances Ciufo of Bath, Pa. and Linda Corradi of Berkeley Heights; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Services were held on Saturday at the Garefino Funeral Home in Lambertville. Burial was private.

Teresa Suarez
CLINTON TWP. - Teresa Suarez died Sunday Feb. 2, 2003 at the Rolling Hills Care Center in Clinton Township. She was 94. She was born in New York City, the daughter of Celeste Cirillo Piersanti. She lived in Linden before moving to Clinton Township in 1998. She was a dress maker for most of her life and worked for many companies in Union County. She was a member of St. Elizabeth's Church in Elizabeth. Her husband, Raymond J. Suarez died in 1990 and three brothers and two sisters also died previously. Mrs. Suarez is survived by a son, Raymond Suarez Jr. of West Palm Beach, Fla.; a daughter, Josephine Dischler of Clinton Township; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Services were held yesterday at the Scarponi-Bright Funeral Home in Lebanon. Entombment will be at the Rosedale Mausoleum in Linden.

Richard Owens
DELAWARE TWP. - Richard Owens died on Friday, Jan. 31, 2003 at the Lyons VA Hospital in Bernards Township. He was 69. Born in Portland, Ore. to Victor and Lucille Davie Owens, he lived there most of his life before moving to Delaware Township last year. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He worked in the telecommunications industry for many years. His brother Victor died earlier. Surviving are his two daughters, Tanya Owens of Union Bridge, Md. and Liesl Wiedemer of Delaware Township; two brothers, John Owens of Thailand and Don Owens of Phoenix, Ariz.; and one grandson. Services will be private and under the direction of the Garefino Funeral Home in Lambertville.
