Kathleen S. Manes
ALAMOGORDO, N.M. - Kathleen S. Manes died Oct. 12, 2002, at her home. She was 59. Ms. Manes was born in Milford, the daughter of Joseph and Florence Emery Kirk. She spent most of her life in New Mexico. She was a graduate of Delaware Valley High Regional School and Churchman's Business School in Pennsylvania. Ms. Manes obtained New Mexico Librarian's I and II certifications and served as both children's librarian and librarian of the Lordsburg, N.M. Public Library for 11 years. Later she worked at the Central New Mexico Correctional Facility's library, then joined the staff of the Alamogordo Public Library in 1991. In 1999 she was invited to join the 1999 statewide Reading Committee for the New Mexico State Library's Summer Reading Program. Ms. Manes pursued continuing education at every opportunity and was well-respected by her peers. She is survived by two daughters, Heather Manes of Alamogordo and Dawn Zimmer of Cincinnati; and three brothers, Norman Kirk and Calvin Kirk, both of Frenchtown, and Larry Kirk of Great Meadows. Ms. Manes was interred in Monte Vista Cemetery in New Mexico under the direction of the Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home of Alamogordo.

Raymond H. Caldwell
HAMPTON - Raymond H. Caldwell died Sept. 26, 2002 at home. He was 64 and died of cancer. He was born in Newark, a son of Raymond A. and Frances Travers Caldwell, and lived in Westfield until moving here seven years ago. He was a graduate of Westfield High School and served in the N.J. National Guard from 1960 to 1973. He was self-employed as the owner of Design Landscaping in Westfield until retiring in February 2000. He is survived by four daughters, Dawn Dinmore of Tioga Center, N.Y., Jill Kraft of South Daytona, Fla., Kim Heft of Glen Gardner and Amy Seiffert of Washington; a sister, Marylin Morris of Bricktown, and nine grandchildren. His body was cremated and there was no funeral service.

Wilbur Klingaman
LEBANON TWP. - Wilbur C. Klingaman died Sunday, April 13, 2003, at Little Brook Nursing Home in Lebanon Township. He was 84. Born in Allentown, Pa., he was a son of Oliver and Flora Flores Klingaman. He resided in New York City before moving to Lebanon Township many years ago and to the nursing home two years ago. Mr. Klingaman was a letter carrier at the Califon Post Office, retiring several years ago. Earlier, he was manager of the Iroquois Hotel in New York City. He served in the Army during World War II in the 38th Engineers Regiment, attaining the rank of technician 5th class. He served in the European African Middle Eastern Theatre and was an entertainment director for the troops; he was awarded two bronze stars. He was a member of VFW Post 6059. He has no immediate survivors. Services will be private under the direction of Coughlin Funeral Home in Califon. Memorial contributions can be sent to the Little Brook Nursing Home, Califon 07830.

Harry Burroughs
LAMBERTVILLE - Harry R. Burroughs died on April 8, 2003 at his residence. He was 71. Known to many as 'Groundhog', he was born in Lambertville to Elwood and Anna Mitchell Burroughs. He was a lifelong resident and was self-employed auto mechanic. Mr. Burroughs was an Army veteran of the Korean War, achieving the rank of corporal. His brother, Elwood, and his sister, Margaret, died before him. Surviving are his wife, Barbara Naylor Burroughs; two sons, Harry Jr. of Tarvares, Fla. and David of Lawrenceville; four daughters, Teresa Velez of Hamilton, Debra Shiron and Christine Worthington, both of Lambertville and Brenda Cook of Morrisville, Pa.; three sisters, Audrey Housel, Anna Mary Roberts and Ethel Esposito, all of Lambertville, and 11 grandchildren. Services were held Sunday in Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home in Flemington. Interment was private.

Anabel and Duncan Cahill
LEBANON TWP. - Twins Annabel Louise and Duncan Louis Cahill were stillborn on Monday, April 14, 2003, at Hunterdon Medical Center. They were the children of Gregory and Stephanie Petron Cahill of Lebanon Township. In addition to their parents, they are survived by their maternal grandmother Mary Theresa Petron of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., and their paternal grandmother Elizabeth Cahill of Harrison. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Interment is private, under the direction of Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home in Flemington.

Louis Wenzel
RARITAN TWP. - Louis A. Wenzel died Monday, April 14, 2003, at home. He was 70. Born in Newark, he was a son of Henry and Viola Lehman Wenzel. He lived in Raritan Township for the past 31 years, moving here from Piscataway. Mr. Wenzel retired as a truck driver from Bill Kay Trucking in Elizabeth. He also worked for the maintenance department at the Hillsborough Country Club in Neshanic and was a courier for Wald Drugs II in Flemington. He enjoyed woodworking in his free time. Mr. Wenzel was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He is survived by his wife, Mary Tuka Wenzel; a daughter, Patricia Collazo of Flemington; a brother, Henry of Forked River; a sister, Marilyn Straub of Union, and three grandchildren. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Hollywood Cemetery in Union under the direction of Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home in Flemington.

Harold Miller
RARITAN TWP. - Harold L. Miller died Saturday, April 12, 2003, at home. He was 88. Born in Delaware Township, he was a son of Lewis and Ethel Fisher Miller. He lived in Hunterdon County for most of his life. Mr. Miller was a machinist at F.L. Schmidt Co. in Lebanon until retiring. He was predeceased by his wife, Mildred Conover Miller in 1979, a daughter, Shirley Smith in 1999; and two sons, Stanley in 1995 and Harold Jr. ,in 1990. Surviving are two daughters, Elsie Miller and Betty Miller Chiesa, both of Ringoes; two sons, William of Greensboro, N.C. and Lester of Flemington; four sisters, Dora Wiseburn of Norway, S.C., Grace Bowlby of Frenchtown, Marie Shipp of Morrisville, Pa., and Helen Godlewski of Boones Mill, Va.; three brothers, Alton of Lambertville, Frank of Sergeantsville and Eugene of Kissimee, Fla.; 19 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held yesterday at Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home in Flemington, followed by interment in Fountain Lawn Cemetery in Ewing.

Amanda Hoff
HACKETTSTOWN - Amanda A. Hoff died March 28, 2003, in the House of the Good Shepherd in Hackettstown, where she was a resident. She was 99. Born in Port Murray, she was the daughter of Casper and Lillie Hoppock Sutton. She lived in Flemington and Frenchtown before moving to Washington, where she resided most of her life. A homemaker for most her life, she had worked for Springer Mills in Washington many years ago. She belonged to the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Washington and, when living in Hackettstown, was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church. She volunteered at the Nearly New Shop in Washington. Her husband, Luther Hoff, died in 1972. She is survived by a daughter, Shirley Temperly of Flemington; two sons, Harold of North Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Gene of West Henrietta, N.Y.; seven grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be private, under the direction of DeVoe Funeral Service in Washington.

Dennis Morton
FANWOOD - Dennis Raymond Morton died Sunday, April 13, 2003, at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield. He was 43. Born in Flemington to Wilbur and June Morton, he lived in Ringoes before moving to Scotch Plains in 1983. He moved to Fanwood nine years ago. He was employed as the traffic manager with Community Distributors in Somerset for the past 15 years. In addition to his parents he is survived by his wife, Marilou Spach Morton; a brother Richard Morton; two sisters, Carol Armitage and Janet Cowart, and his grandmother, Edna Morton. Funeral services are tomorrow at 11 a.m. at Memorial Funeral Home in Fanwood Calling hours are tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home. William Prutzman
WARMINSTER, Pa. - William Prutzman died April 1, 2003. Born in Lambertville, he resided there until moving to Warminster 12 years ago. Mr. Prutzman was an Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 98th Artillery Division. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Ann Prutzman; two sons, William Prutzman Jr. of Warminster and Richard Prutzman of Stockton; a daughter Judy Diena of Ambler, Pa.; six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Arthur Whitely
ANNANDALE - Arthur C. Whiteley died April 8, 2003, at Hunterdon Medical Center. He was 64. He was born in Lebanon, the son of Arthur Walter and Jeannette Deckhut Whiteley, and had lived in Annandale since 1963, moving from another part of Clinton Township. He retired in 2000 after working many years for Clinton Township as a grounds and maintenance person. Previously, he was a guard for the former Annandale Reformatory, now known as Mountainview Youth Correctional Facility. He served with the Marine Corps from 1957 to 1960, and attained the rank of corporal. He was of the Methodist faith. He was an avid fisherman. Two brothers, William Whiteley and Steven Whiteley, died earlier. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Beverly B. Bell Whiteley; three sons, David W. Whiteley of West Lake Village, Calif., Bruce A. Whiteley of Stratham, N.H.; and Kenneth C. Whiteley of Bellmawr; three brothers, Robert Whiteley of Clinton Township, Jack Whiteley of Whitehouse Station and Walter Whiteley of Perkiomenville, Pa.; a sister, Jeannette Cullin of Palmer Township, Pa., and six grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday at Scarponi-Bright Funeral Home in Lebanon. Burial was in the Union Cemetery in Lebanon. Salvatore Filippello
EAST AMWELL TWP. - Salvatore J. Filippello died Monday, April 14, 2003, in Helen Fuld Hospital in Trenton. He was 82. Born in Philadelphia, he resided in Westville before moving to Ringoes 34 years ago. Mr. Filippello was a Navy veteran of World War II and Korea, and was discharged with the rank of chief petty officer. He was an electrician formerly employed by U.S. Steel in Fairless Hills, Pa., then by Mobil Research in Pennington, retiring in 1992. He is survived by his wife, Jeannette Zentek Filippello; one daughter, Mary Patricia Mathis of Mantua; one stepson, Philip Philhower of Derider, N.Y.; one brother, Vincent Filippello of Philadelphia; four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home in Flemington. Interment will be in St. Magdalen Cemetery in Flemington. Geoffrey Buckwalter
DOYLESTOWN, Pa. - Geoffrey Riggs Buckwalter died on April 5, 2003. He was 85. He lived in Flemington for most of his life before moving to Doylestown. A graduate of Lafayette College (B.S., 1939), New York University (M.S.), and Rutgers University (Ph.D., 1950), Dr. Buckwalter worked for more than 50 years as a chemist, including more than 20 years with the Frederick H. Levy Co. He specialized in the chemistry of pigments and inks and was the holder of several patents in that area. A member of the American Chemical Society for more than 60 years, he was widely recognized as an expert in his field. During the 1960s he conducted research for the South Branch Watershed Association out of a concern for the Raritan River, and he maintained a lifelong interest in environmental protection, advising both the chemical industry and government agencies on manufacturing practices and standards. He was also a long-time member and treasurer of Hunterdon Art Center in Clinton. Following his retirement from full-time work in 1992, Dr. Buckwalter devoted time to further study in his field, a new career in real estate, and leisure activities such as travel and playing golf. He is survived by his wife, Renee; his sister, Margaret, of Irvine, Calif.; and his daughter, Melinda Buckwalter of Bethel, Conn. A private graveside ceremony took place April 8 at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in Ringoes, which Dr. Buckwalter served as treasurer for more than 20 years. Marie Riccardo
EAST PATCHOGUE, N.Y. - Marie Ricciardo died on Friday, April 11, 2003 at St. Peter's University Hospital in New Brunswick. She was 76. She was the mother of Cheryl Liberti of Flemington. Born in Manhattan, she moved to Staten Island, N.Y. in 1985. She was a homemaker, and enjoyed gardening and cooking. Her husband, Vincent, and a son, Frank, both died earlier. Along with her daughter, surviving are her sons, James of Long Island and Vincent of Staten Island; four other daughters, Mary Ann Specht, Grace Bohl, Denise Signorelli and Virginia Raimondi, all of Staten Island; a brother, Carmine; a sister, Vivian Pagliarello; 21 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. Services were held Tuesday at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in Staten Island. Entombment followed at the Moravian Cemetery in Staten Island. Arrangements were by Matthew Funeral Home in Staten Island.

Merrill Miller
RARITAN TWP. - Merrill 'Lee' Miller died Sunday, April 13, 2003, in Hunterdon Medical Center. He was 64. Born in Flemington, he was the son of Earl and Erma Peters Miller, and lived in the borough or Raritan Township all his life. He graduated from Hunterdon Central High School in 1957. Mr. Miller was a parts manager for L.B. Smith Equipco of Somerville for the past 19 years. He was also a former security guard at Flemington Fairgrounds. He was a member of the Reaville Dart Team and enjoyed fishing. A son, Scott Miller, died in 1985. He is survived by his wife, Mary Storr Miller; a son, Brian Miller of Phillipsburg; two sisters, Diane Donnelly of Easton and Dottie Miller of Sharon, Pa., and a granddaughter. Visitation hours were set for yesterday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home in Flemington. Funeral services are planned for 1 p.m. today at the funeral home, followed by burial in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in Reaville. Martin Smisek
WHITEHOUSE STATION - Martin Smisek died on Saturday, April 13, 2003, at Hunterdon Medical Center. He was 84. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of Stephen and Christina Volchak Smisek. Mr. Smisek lived in Pittstown before moving to Whitehouse Station 20 years ago. He was living at the Country Arch Care Center in Union Township at the time of his death. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Asbury. Mr. Smisek was an employee of the Hunterdon County Road Department and retired after 22 years of service. He is survived by a sister, Susan Yurina of Florida, and his longtime companion, Madaleine Welsh of Whitehouse Station. Funeral services were held yesterday at 8 p.m. at the Kearns Funeral Home in Whitehouse.

Edward Gorski
WEST AMWELL TWP. - Edward Gorski died Monday, April 14, 2003, at Valley View Healthcare Center in Frenchtown. He was 79. Born in Trenton to Frank and Helen Czerniawska Gorski, he lived in West Amwell Township since 1969. He retired after many years of employment at the state Division of Parks and Recreation as a supervisor of grounds maintenance. He was a member of the Trenton Polish American Democratic Club. Mr. Gorski was a member of the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Lambertville. Surviving are his wife, Ella Reed Gorski; a sister, Jane Lynn; two stepsons, Frank and Bill Peck, and a grandson. Services will be held Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at Garefino Funeral Home in Lambertville. Burial will follow in the Old Rocks Cemetery in West Amwell Township. The calling period will be Saturday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.

Josephine Janusz
EASTON - Josephine Janusz died April 10, 2003 at Easton Nursing Center. She was 88. Born in Poland, the daughter of John and Mary Czyrnik, she moved to the United States in the late 1930s, settling in Brooklyn, N.Y. Mrs. Janusz lived in Whitehouse Station from 1946 until she moved to the nursing center six years ago. Mrs. Janusz was a housekeeper at the Kate Macy Ladd Home in Peapack-Gladstone for 11 years, retiring in 1982. She was previously employed as an assembler at RCA in Bridgewater for 20 years. Mrs. Janusz was a communicant of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Whitehouse Station and a member of its Altar Rosary Society. She was also a member of the Polish American Citizens Club of Whitehouse Station. In her own home, Mrs. Janusz was a very proud housekeeper and an avid gardener. Her husband, Walter Janusz died in 1973. She is survived by two sons, Frederick Janusz of Glen Gardner, and Walter Janusz of Bloomsbury; a brother, Mitchell Czyrnik of Suffern, N.Y.; a sister, Genovieve Czyrnik of Bloomsbury; three grandchildren; two step grandchildren; a great-grandchild, and a step-great-randchild. The funeral was held Monday at Our Lady of Lourdes Church. Interment was in St. Bernard's Cemetery in Bridgewater, under the direction of Kearns Funeral Home in Whitehouse. Donald Isak
UNION TWP. - Donald Isak died April 9, 2003, at Hunterdon Medical Center. He was 58. He was born in Easton, the son of Leopold and Eleanor Apgar Isak. He was a lifelong resident of Union Township. He had been an inspector at the former Unisys Co. plant in Raritan Township. Mr. Isak enjoyed boating and fishing. He is survived by a brother, Ralph Isak of Snellville, Ga. Services were held on Monday at Martin Funeral Home in Clinton. Burial was in Bloomsbury Cemetery. Kathryn Lutzko
THREE BRIDGES - Kathryn V. Mattox Lutzko died Tuesday, April 15, 2003, at Hunterdon Medical Center. She was 81. She was born in Plainfield, the daughter of George and Kathryn McNulty Mattox, and was raised in Plainfield. She lived in Ocean Beach before settling in Three Bridges 15 years ago. She was a homemaker and had a passion for sewing. She was a former communicant of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Plainfield and a member of its Rosary Society. She is survived by two daughters, Donna Kelly of Flemington and Joy Garwood of Gettysburg, Pa. Services will be held tomorrow at the Countryside Funeral Home in Three Bridges. MOUNT BETHEL, Pa. - Lise M. Bronish died April 10, 2003, at home. She was 62. Born in Phillipsburg, she was the daughter of Joseph and Lise Arnesen Biel. She was a 1958 graduate of North Hunterdon Regional High School. She was a volunteer for the Slate Belt Meals on Wheels Program. In addition to her mother, of Bethlehem Township, Mrs. Bronish is survived by her husband of 44 years, Richard 'Buddy' Bronish; two sons Richard Bronish Jr. of Mount Bethel and John Bronish of Winfield, Pa.; three daughters, Lise DelSantro of Oxford, Joanne Bronish of Mount Bethel and Tammy Shuba of Flemington; two brothers, Joseph Biel Jr. and Danny Biel, both of Bethlehem Township; two sisters, Joanne O'Brien of Harvard, Idaho and Carol Minick of Glen Gardner, and seven grandchildren. Services were held Tuesday at Reed/Gaffney Funeral Home in Johnsville, Pa. Burial was private. Hazel Runkle
WEST AMWELL TWP. - Hazel W. Runkle died Monday, April 14, 2003, at home. She was 75. Born in the Mount Airy section of West Amwell Township, she was the daughter of Grover and Edna Lambert Williamson. She resided in Mount Airy all her life. She was a graduate of Lambertville High School. She was formerly employed by Lambertville National Bank; subsequently, she worked at the Lambertville Post Office, retiring in 1985. She was also a school bus driver for South Hunterdon High School. She was a charter member of the Ladies Auxiliary of West Amwell Fire Company. She was a member of the Second English Presbyterian Church of Amwell in Mount Airy. Mrs. Runkle is survived by her husband of 54 years, Raymond Runkle; a daughter, Sandra Runkle of Flemington, two sons, R. Bruce Runkle and R. Barry Runkle, both of Mount Airy; two sisters, Cora Mathews of Woonsocket, R.I. and Mary Samsel in Florida; two brothers, Harry Williamson of Virginia Beach, Va. and Robert Williamson of Jersey City and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Second English Presbyterian Church of Amwell. Interment will be private under the direction of Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home in Flemington. William Agnew
MILFORD - William E. Agnew died Oct. 29, 2002 at home. He was 87. Born in Milford to William H. and Alma J. Agnew, he was a lifelong resident. Mr. Agnew was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a paper-machine operator at the Riegel paper mill in Milford for more than 45 years. He enjoyed doing puzzles and playing cards. His wife of 48 years, the former Melba A. Sassaman, died in 1995. Surviving are two daughters, Shirley Ann Agnew of San Carlos, Calif. and Eugenia Marie Brennan of Hercules, Calif.; three brothers, Lawrence of Hellertown, Pa., Melvin of Mountain Lake and Richard of Ventura, Calif.; a sister, Marie Hartpence of Milford, and two granddaughters. Funeral services were held Nov. 2 at W.E. Johnson Funeral Home, Holland Township. Interment was at Milford Union Cemetery. James Carl Austin
TRENT WOODS, N.C. - James Carl Austin died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002. He was 79. Mr. Austin lived in Flemington for 14 years before moving to North Carolina in 1991. Born in Ashtabula, Ohio, he was the son of Elijah Carr and Thelma Gilmore Austin. He lived in Avenel from 1949 to 1977, when he moved to Flemington. He served in the Marine Corps during World War II and saw action in the Pacific Theater at Guadalcanal and the Marshall Islands. Mr. Austin was employed by Bell Telephone Co. in New Jersey from 1949 to 1983, when he retired. He served as an elder, deacon and usher at First Presbyterian Church in Avenel, then joined the First Presbyterian Churches in Flemington and in New Bern, N.C. He had been a member of the VFW, Elks Lodge and Masonic Temple. He was an avid golfer, a past member of the Tidewater Seniors and a current member of the Emerald Golf Club in New Bern. Mr. Austin is survived by his wife Eleanor; a son, the Rev. Donald of Pittsburgh, Pa.; a daughter, Nancy Zanetti-Wyatt of New Bern; three grandchildren; a step-granddaughter, and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held Nov. 7 at the church in New Bern. Pollock-Best Funerals & Cremations of New Bern was in charge of the arrangements.
