Jennie C. V. Tunning
Jennie Chiefallo Venier Tunning, 90, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died October 10 at Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte after a long illness. She grew up and lived in Princeton for more than 40 years before moving to Ewing Township 30 years ago. A young mother of two during World War II, she left full-time homemaking for the workplace. She was employed for more than 30 years at the General Motors Plant in Trenton, where she was honored for selling a large number of war bonds. After her retirement from General Motors, she became active in community and volunteer work. She served on the executive board of AFL-CIO chapter No. 731, and participated in local politics with the Democratic Club. As a younger woman, she had been a Fred Astaire ballroom dance instructor. In retirement, she put her dancing skill to use, serving for 20 years as an aerobic dance instructor at the Hollowbrook Senior Center. She was also the first woman to serve as president of the A Club. She was a life member of the Trenton-Ewing chapter of the Deborah Hospital Foundation, a member of Dorothea House in Princeton, and a member of the Incarnation Roman Catholic Church in North Ewing. She is survived by a daughter, Rosella Venier-Kok of New York City; a son, John Venier Sr. of Port Charlotte; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. The funeral was October 14 at the Incarnation Church.

Herbert J. Winegar
Herbert Joseph Winegar, 77, of Doylestown, Pa., formerly of Princeton, died October 29 from complications of Alzheimer's Disease. Born in Staten Island, he entered military service with the U.S. Army in World War II in 1943. After the war, he received a bachelor of electrical engineering from Cornell University in 1950. He earned a juris doctor from the University of Maryland School of Law in 1954. He was a patent counsel for Western Electric and Bell Laboratories, retiring from AT&T Bell Labs as assistant general counsel in 1987. He was an avid model ship builder, model train collector, philatelist, gardener, reader, and student of American history. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Virginia; a son, Jeffrey of Pennington; a daughter, Janet Stone of Bedford, Mass.; a brother, Donald of Ballston Spa, N.Y.; and five grandchildren. A private graveside ceremony will be held at Unity Cemetery in Latrobe, Pa. Memorial donations may be made to the PARVEE Foundation, c/o Pine Run Community, 777 Ferry Road, Doylestown, Pa. 18901.

Walter J. Petrykanyn
Walter John Petrykanyn, 72, of Osprey, Fla., a former 15-year resident of Princeton, died October 15 in Sarasota, Fla. Born in Toronto, he moved to Osprey from Princeton in 1997. He was a graduate of the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College, Toronto, where he became a faculty member. He retired alter 30 years as an executive in the international divisions of Merck & Company, Inc. and Bristol Myers Squibb Company, in the United States, Middle East, and Far East. He is survived by his wife, Gail; his children, Richard, Lawrence, John and Patricia, all of Toronto, and Colin and Ruth, both of Halifax, Nova Scotia; a sister, Annette Murphy of Toronto; and a brother; Nicholas of Toronto. Memorial services were held on October 18 at the Presbyterian Church of the Pines in Sarasota, and on November 8 at St. Demetrius Ukrainian Church In Toronto. Ila Takats
Ila Takats, 100, of Princeton, died November 8 at the University Medical Center at Princeton. Born in Hungary, she had been a resident of Princeton for the past 15 years. She was educated in Hungary. Predeceased by her husband, Zoltan Takats, she is survived by a daughter, Judy McPherson of Princeton; a son, Stephen T. of Philadelphia, Pa.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of The Kimble Funeral Home.

Margaret Hilland
Margaret Hilland, 86, of Princeton, died November 6 in the Princeton Care Center. Born in Pittston, Pa., she was raised in Croyden, Pa. She lived in Wildwood Crest and Raleigh, N.C., before moving to Princeton in 1999. Predeceased by her husband, Viggo Hilland, she is survived by two daughters, Ingrid Emerline of Raleigh, N.C. and Margo Froehlich of Princeton; a sister, Dorothy Piuma of Croyden, Pa.; four grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. Dorothy W. Bissell
Dorothy Wells Bissell, 84, a lifelong Princeton resident and award-winning area artist, died October 31 in San Rafael, Calif. Born in Birmingham, Ala., she began private art lessons at age six. She graduated from Finch College in New York City, where she studied art under Leon Kroll, then earned a scholarship at Parsonšs School of Design, where she later became a faculty member. She worked as an art therapist at the Jamesburg Reformatory for Boys, Trenton Neuropsychiatric Hospital, and Fort Dix Hospital. She taught for Rex Gorleigh and the Princeton Art Association, the Princeton Y.W.C.A., and Art Works in Trenton. She also taught on cruise ships for 40 years. She was a member of the Princeton Art Alliance, the Garden State Watercolor Society, the National League of American Penwomen, the 1860 House, Whošs Who of American Women, and the Salmagundi Club in New York City. She studied oil painting with Wolf Kahn and Nelson Shanks. Her paintings have been shown by the American Water Color Society, the Garden State Water Color Society, and New Jersey Water Color Society. Her works hang in the permanent collections of the Superior Court in Washington, D.C. and the Arnot Museum in Albany, N.Y., and in numerous private collections. She traveled widely, painting in Europe, Russia, and the Caribbean. Her favorite landscapes were in Sonoma County, Calif., New Mexico, and Portugal. She is survived by two daughters, Galey Sergio of San Rafael, Calif., and Katharine Maloney of Hancock, N.Y.; a son, John of Los Angeles; and three grandchildren. Charles F. Baunach, Sr.
Charles F. Baunach, Sr., 97, of Princeton, died November 5 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Hamilton. Born in Goshen, N.Y., he was a resident of Kingston before moving to Princeton in 1939. He was the president of Charles F. Baunach & Sons, lnc., residential building contractors, since 1959, and prior to that, Baunach and Van Note Builders from 1949 to 1959. Some of his early work for Matthews Construction Company included contributing to the interior construction of the Princeton University Library foyer. His expertise was in colonial craftsmanship. He designed and hand-crafted many projects found in the Princeton area. One of his favorite projects was the extensive restoration in the late 1950s of Brickhouse Farm in Hopewell. He was a 75-year member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters & Joiners Local No. 781 and the Woosamonsa Road Dance Group, and the oldest living member of Kingston Presbyterian Church. Predeceased by his daughter, Virginia, he is survived by his wife of 70 years, Bertha; two sons, Charles F. Jr. of Princeton and Gerald E. of Pennington; a daughter, Carolyn of Ewing, and four grandchildren. The funeral service was November 10 at Kingston Presbyterian Church, with Pastor John Heinsohn officiating. Interment was in Kingston Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of The Mather-Hodge Funeral Home.

Cecilia Arnold
Cecilia ("Sheila") Arnold, 93, of Princeton, died November 7 at the Princeton Care Center. Born in Newark, she was a graduate of Blessed Sacrament High School in Newark. Before retiring as an administrative assistant from Blue Cross/Blue Shield, she worked for Prudential Insurance and Wallace and Tiernen. She was also a bookkeeper for The Windsor Hotel in Belmar. A 46-year resident of Manasquan before moving to Princeton, she was a communicant of St. Denis Roman Catholic Church, a member of the Altar Rosary Society, and a member of the Manasquan Seniors. She was also a member of the New York Metropolitan Opera Guild. An avid opera lover and Yankees fan, she also enjoyed the beach, knitting, ballet, and Broadway musicals. Daughter of the late Edward P. and Anna Arnold, she was predeceased by her brothers Edward P. Arnold, Jr., formerly of Lansdale, Pa., and William J. Arnold, formerly of Brielle. She is survived by a sister, Marie Arnold Rasna, of Manasquan; and a niece with whom she lived, Joan Zisler of Princeton. A Funeral Mass was held November 10 at St. Paulšs Church. Karl D. Uitti
Karl D. Uitti, 69, of Princeton, died November 11. He was the John Woodhull Professor of Modern Languages and a member of the Princeton University faculty for 44 years. He joined the Princeton faculty in 1959 after earning his bachelor's, master's, and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California Berkeley. From 1972 to 1978 he served as chair of the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures. A specialist in French medieval literature, Prof. Uitti was known for a broad range of Romance language scholarship and for using modern technologies to enhance the study of medieval languages. He taught French and Italian. "He had a deep familiarity with the languages, literatures, and history of all the peoples that speak and write in the Romance languages," said Lionel Gossman, the M. Taylor Pyne Professor of Romance Languages and Literatures Emeritus at Princeton. "Though he was thoroughly trained in Romance philology, he was also an expert in late 19th- and early 20th-century literature, and had a lively interest in contemporary Latin American and Latino culture as well." Prof. Uitti was the author of several books and monographs as well as dozens of articles and reviews. The main focus of his research was in medieval Romance studies, but his published work covered late 19th- and early 20th-century French literature, modern literature, history and theory of literary criticism and analysis, and theory and history of philology. For the past several years, he had been dedicated to developing computer-assisted research and pedagogy in his field by leading the "Charette Project," which involves the computerization of the medieval Lancelot manuscript tradition. The online resources created through this project are frequently used by researchers around the world. Among his many professional activities, he was the general editor of the Edward C. Armstrong Monographs on Medieval Literature, and a member of the editorial boards of French Forum and Romance Philology. The French government conferred upon him the ranks of Chevalier and Officier of the Palmes Acad=E9miques in honor of his teaching and his work in promoting French culture. He was also a member of the Codrington Club of Oxford, England, and co-president of the Association des Amis de Remy de Gourmont. In addition to his teaching, Prof. Uitti directed to completion approximately 40 doctoral dissertations. Many of his former students have become faculty members at universities around the world. He is survived by his wife, Michelle A. Freeman; a daughter, Maria Elizabeth McCabe; two sons, David and Jacob; a sister, Elizabeth Meltzer; and five grandchildren. Jeffrey D. Tignor
Jeffrey David Tignor, 35, only son of Robert and Marian Tignor of Princeton, died November 11 at his home in Primos, Pa. The cause of death has not been determined. Mr. Tignor grew up in Princeton, but because of his father's extended research trips spent time in Nairobi, Kenya, attended Cairo American College, Egypt, and spent a year at Chiswick Middle School near London, U.K. He graduated from Princeton High School in 1987. He then attended Bard College before earning an associate's degree with honors from Delaware County Community College, majoring in General Studies. At the time of his death, he was enrolled at West Chester University in Pennsylvania. He was active in several organizations. He earned a black belt in Akido, belonged to a games club and a science fiction book club, and completed a 500-hour course in Shiatsu massage therapy. An avid reader, he also played the piano and guitar. He attended the Unitarian Universalist Congregation and an earth-based spiritual group. He was an active member of the "Just Friends" social group, dedicated to fellowship and mutual support. He is survived by his parents and two sisters, Sandra Tignor Selby of Princeton and Laura Cobb of Yardley, Pa. A remembrance celebration of David's life will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, November 23, at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Princeton, Cherry Hill Road at Route 206. Alice B. Shannon
Alice Bishop Shannon, 90, of Hightstown, died November 15 at the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Hamilton following a brief illness. She had lived in Princeton from 1953 to 1994 before moving to Meadow Lakes in Hightstown. Born in Columbus, she was the daughter of the late John V. Bishop and the late Helen B. Garrison. She attended the Fermata School, Aiken, S.C. An amateur gardener, she also enjoyed travel, cultural events, and shopping in the Princeton area. She was married to the late A. Ludlow Kramer, of Old Westbury, Long Island, who died in 1948. Their two children were Alissa K. Sutphin, of Princeton, and the late Audrey K. Spowart. She later remarried Arthur Vernon Shannon of Princeton in 1965, who predeceased her in 1992. She is survived by her daughter, Ms. Sutphin; a brother, John Bishop, VI, of Gladwyne, Pa.; and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 22, at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Church, 33 Stockton Street. Interment will be at Princeton Cemetery. Charles J. Sailliez
Charles J. Sailliez, 82, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., died October 31. He was a Princeton resident before moving to Fort Lauderdale 40 years ago. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dorothy; a son, Charles S.; two daughters, Dorothy and Lynn; a sister, Victoria Casey of Princeton; and two grandchildren. Funeral services were held November 4 at Forest Lawn Funeral Home North in Pompano Beach, Fla.

Gary C. Lott
Gary Cornelius Lott, 68, of Rocky Hill, died November 10 at home. Before retiring in 2000, he taught for 39 years at Princeton Country Day and Princeton Day School. Born in Amsterdam, N.Y., he spent his childhood in Canajoharie, N.Y. He graduated from Middlebury College and then studied set design at Carnegie Tech before obtaining a master's degree in history at Columbia University. He was chairman of the history department at Princeton Day School for many years, where he was also involved in many aspects of PDS life, from coaching to theater to mock trials. He received several awards in recognition of his teaching excellence. After retiring from PDS, he worked as a substitute teacher at both PDS and South Brunswick High School. He also worked in the PDS summer camps and continued to coach mock trials. He was an artist, athlete, and gardener. He had two shows of his water colors and clay sculptures in the Princeton area. He spent many summers designing and building additions and renovations to his house, and landscaping his garden. He ran six marathons and was the winner for his age group in two of them. He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Joyce Greenberg Lott; a son, Carl of Palm Harbor, Fla.; a daughter, Sara Lott of Princeton; three step-children, Elizabeth Greenberg of Silver Spring, Md., Suzanne Greenberg of Long Beach, Calif., and Larry Greenberg of Newtown, Pa; one grandchild and six step-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at Princeton Day School on Sunday, November 23 at 4 p.m. The family wishes to establish a permanent memorial in his honor as part of the new Arts Facility at Princeton Day School. Helen Y. Gray
Helen Young Gray, 98, of Fairfax, Va., died November 9. She was formerly a 20-year resident of Princeton. Born in the American Consulate in Harput, Turkey, she lived all over the world while her father, Evan E. Young, held various State Department posts, including consul general to Turkey and the Dominican Republic. She was a graduate of Syracuse University with a bachelor's degree in library science. With her husband, Kenneth E. Gray, she moved in retirement to the Berkshire Mountains in Massachusetts, then to Twining Village in Newtown, Pa. After her husband's death in 2000, she moved to a nursing home in Fairfax, Va., to be closer to her family. Mrs. Gray was an avid reader who also enjoyed writing a family history, playing bridge, spending time with family and friends, traveling, and entertaining. She is survived by a son, K. Evan, of Reston, Va.; four granddaughters; and five great-grandchildren. The funeral service was November 14 at All Saints' Episcopal Church; interment was in the church cemetery. Freda E. Bowers
Freda Elizabeth Bowers, 97, of TidePointe, S.C., died November 11 at Hilton Head Regional Medical Center. She had been a lifelong Princeton resident before moving to TidePointe in 1998. She was a graduate of Smith College. A music lover, she was a talented organist and pianist. She played the piano at TidePointe, and in Princeton on many occasions. She was also an avid gardener and nature lover. Predeceased by her husband, George Bowers, she is survived by a son, Alfred G. of Southport, N.C.; a daughter, Bobbie Bard of Hilton Head Island, S.C. and Chicago, Ill.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, November 22 at 10.30 a.m. at Princeton Cemetery. Ernest A. Johnson
Ernest A. Johnson, of Princeton, died November 12 at TenAcre Foundation. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was a graduate of Stuyvesant High School in New York City and Brigham Young University. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a Second Lieutenant in the Pacific Theater of World War II from 1943 to 1946. He was an executive with Squibb Pharmaceutical Co. from 1947 to 1975, retiring as president of U.S. Operations. He was a member of many charitable and community organizations throughout his life, serving as a board member for Middlesex County College Foundation, TenAcre Foundation, and the Easter Seals-Raritan Valley Workshop. He was also an avid baseball card collector. He is survived by his wife, Audrey; two daughters, Holly Di Flora of Dayton, Ohio, and Vicki LoPiccolo of Holland, Pa.; a son, Evan of Worthington, Mass.; three grandchildren and two step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren. Rose B. Green
Rose B. Green, 98, of Holmdel, died November 18. She emigrated to the U.S. at the age of six from London, England, and lived in Princeton for almost sixty years. Predeceased by her husband, Jonas (Joe) Green, she is survived by three sons, Henry (Hank) of Fair Haven, Richard of Amherst, Mass., and Jonas Jr. of Southampton, Pa.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Keith Duncan
Keith Duncan, 68, of Princeton Junction, died November 13 at home. Born in England, he had lived in Princeton Junction for the past thirty years. He retired after 26 years as an engineer with Maritime Overseas Corp. in New York. An avid golfer, he was a member of Cranbury Country Club. He was also an enthusiastic fisherman who enjoyed his yearly fishing trip to Maine. Son of the late David and Mary Duncan, he is survived by his wife, Margaret; a daughter, Sharon Duncan of Robbinsville; a son, David of Germantown, Md.; and a brother, Alex of England. The funeral was November 22 at Princeton Alliance Church, Plainsboro. Anna M. Dey
Anna M. Dey, 103, of Princeton, died November 22 at The Pavilions at Forrestal. Born in Trenton, she had lived in the Princeton area since 1910. She was one of the first women in New Jersey to obtain a motorcycle license, and was a lifelong fan of the New York Yankees. She was a member of St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church. Predeceased by her husband, Nelson Dey, and a son, George, she is survived by three granddaughters, six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. A private graveside service will be held on Wednesday, November 26 at Kingston Presbyterian Church with Monsignor Nolan, Pastor of St. Paul's Church, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of The Mather-Hodge Funeral Home.
