Barbara C. Dobbins

Services for Barbara C. Dobbins of Hobbs will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3, at Scharbauer Street Church of Christ.

Roderick Davis will officiate.

Burial will follow in Prairie Haven Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Griffin Funeral Home.

Mrs. Dobbins, 69, died Friday, Jan. 26, at her home. She was born Dec. 22, 1931, in Higginson, Ark. She married Freddie Dobbins Sr., on Sept. 4, 1957, in Carlsbad. He preceded her in death in 1997.

She was an active member at Scharbauer Street Church of Christ, where she participated in the programs for the ladies. She was often called "Miss Ebony" because she loved to dress elegantly. She also loved her children, grandchildren, traveling and shopping.

Survivors include two sons, Freddie Dobbins Jr. of Tempe, Ariz., and Juwan Ledreece Dobbins of Fon du lac, Wisc.; two daughters, Soraya Smith of Las Cruces and Sinoma Vosha Nuņez of Avondale, Ariz.; two brothers, Clinton Broach of Long Beach, Calif., and Raymond Broach of Chicago; three sisters, Mary Thomas of Portland, Ore., Earnestine Lewis of Jacksonville, Fla., and Ora Lee Johnson of Carlsbad; and 10 grandchildren.

There will be a family book for friends and family to sign.

Two brothers, Hoover and Bennet Broach; and three sisters, Ruth Broach, Ada Mitchell and Shirley Miller, also preceded her in death.

Betty J. Evans

Services are pending with Chapel of Hope Funeral Home for Betty Jo Evans of Hobbs.

Mrs. Evans, 77, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, at her home. She was born Oct. 22, 1923, in Logan.

Immediate survivors include her husband, Edward Evans of the home.

Robert 'Bob' Deitz

LOVINGTON - Services for Robert "Bob" Deitz of Lovington will be held at 2 p.m. today at Jackson Avenue Baptist Church.

The Rev. Mike McGuire and the Rev. Herb Bryant will officiate. Burial will follow in the Lovington Cemetery under the direction of Smith-Rogers Funeral Home.

Mr. Deitz, 66, died Sunday, Jan. 28, in Lubbock. He was born July 17, 1934, in Lovington.

He married Barbara Owens on May 16, 1958, in Lovington. He later married Ruby Perry, who preceded him in death in 1998. On Jan. 16, 1999, he married Ellen Williams in Lovington.

He had been a deacon at Trinity Baptist Church and later became a member of Jackson Avenue Baptist Church, where he also served as a deacon.

Mr. Deitz had been a lifelong resident of Lovington and worked as a plant repairman for 34 years at Lea County Electric.

Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Christopher Deitz of Oakland, Calif. and Paul Deitz of Austin, Texas; a daughter, Julie Gail Deitz of Austin; two stepsons, Robert Williams and Rick Williams, both of Lovington; a brother, Don Deitz of Anchorage, Alaska; a sister, Barbara Jurik of Anchorage; his mother, Nuel Johnson Deitz of Anchorage; and five step-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Full Circle Gospel Group or the New Mexico Boys and Girls Ranch, P.O.;. Box 5000, Boys Ranch, N.M. 87002-5000.

Isabel Chavez

Funeral Mass for Isabel Chavez of Hobbs will be held at 10 a.m. today at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.

Burial will follow in Prairie Haven Memorial Park under the direction of Chapel of Hope Funeral Home.

Mrs. Chavez, 67, died Monday, Jan. 29, at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock. She was born Dec. 1, 1933, in Eagle Pass, Texas. She married Sylvester Chavez on Sept. 16, 1952, in Hobbs.

She was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. The Rev. Pedro Valdez will officiate.

Survivors include her husband of the home; a son, Mario Chavez Sr. of Hobbs; two daughters, Virginia Sosa and Tonya Enriquez, both of Hobbs; two brothers, Carlos Carrillo of Carrizo Springs, Texas, and Gabino Carrillo of Hobbs; a sister, Jane Orosco of Hobbs; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Her parents, Baldo and Antonia Carrillo; and a brother, Felix Carrillo, preceded her in death.

Otto Arter

Funeral services for Otto Arter of Lovington will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the First Church of the Nazarene. Mr. Arter died Jan. 27 at the Lovington Good Samaritan Home. He was 90.

Services will be conducted by the Rev. Jim Finch and burial will be at Resthaven Cemetery.

Mr. Arter was born Oct. 29, 1910, in Cartersville, Okla. He married Myrtle Rose Clark on Oct. 21, 1948, in Shawnee, Okla.

He was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene.

He is survived by his wife, son Bobby Arter of California, daughters Carol Hafner of California, Linda Diebel and Earlene Cullon of Lovington and Mary Lee of Burns Flat, Okla. He is also survived by a brother, 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mason and Dolly Alter, three brothers and two son-in-laws.

Smith-Rogers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Isabel Chavez

A funeral Mass for Isabel Chavez of Hobbs will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 31, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church.

Visitation will be from 1-8 p.m. today at Chapel of Hope Funeral Home. Rosary will be said at the funeral home chapel at 7 p.m. today.

Mrs. Chavez, 67, died Monday, Jan. 29, at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock.

She was born Dec. 1, 1933, in Eagle Pass, Texas.

Survivors include her husband, Sylvester Chavez of the home.

Marjorie M. Engel

HOMER, Neb. - Marjorie M. Engel, 100, of rural Homer died Friday, Jan. 26, at a South Sioux City nursing home.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. today at Homer United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mike Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Omaha Valley Cemetery, rural Homer.

Mrs. Engel was born Dec. 30, 1900, in Fremont, the daughter of William and Mary M. (Peters) Lass. She married Henry M. Engel on Sept. 14, 1920, in Center. They farmed in the Dakota County area. He died Oct. 5, 1977, in Sioux City, Iowa.

Survivors include two sons Darrel of South Sioux City, and Vernon of Sioux City; seven daughters, Delores Stark and Yvonne Barge, both of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Marcella Hennig of Rosalie, Laura Hansen of Hobbs, Joyce Novak of Pender, Helen Smith of South Sioux City, and Mary McNear of Hubbard; 50 grandchildren; 100 great-grandchildren; 41 great-great-grandchildren; and a great-great-great-granddaughter.

She also was preceded in death by three sons, Warren, Melvin and Verl; two daughters, Jean Van Cleave and Darlene Kelly; and three grandchildren.

Ruby Fonda

Graveside services and burial for Ruby Fonda of Hobbs are scheduled for 3 p.m. CST today at Mount Olive Memorial Park in Big Spring under the direction of Calvary Memorial Funeral Home of Hobbs.

The Rev. Malcolm Pointon will officiate.

Mrs. Fonda, 73, died Friday, Jan. 26, at Lea Regional Medical Center.

She was born Sept. 10, 1927, in Edmonson, Ky.

She attended First Baptist Church in Big Spring. She moved to Hobbs in 1996 from Big Spring.

Survivors included three sons, Otis Fonda Jr. of New Albany, Ind., Robert Edward Fonda of Sugar Grove, Va., and Larry Alan Fonda of Big Spring; two daughters, Peggy Goetz of Hobbs and Alice Vargas of Big Spring; three sisters, Belle Mullinx of Phoenix, Mary Harrod and Peggy Cunningham, both of St. Augustine, Fla.; 19 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Otis Fonda; her parents, Edd and Alice McCawley; a daughter, Patty May; a sister, Ruth Cox; and a brother, Ramsey McCawley.

Billie McBeth

Funeral services for Billie J. McBeth of Hobbs will be held today, Jan. 20, at 2 p.m. at Prairie Haven Chapel. The Rev. Leon Green will officiate.

Burial will be at Prairie Haven Memorial Park following the service. Mr. McBeth died Monday, Jan. 22, at Hobbs health Care Center. He was 63.

He was born July 18, 1938, in Gatesville, Texas.

He is survived by daughters Shaunene Richards of Tyler, Texas, and Wilma Sue Johnson of Chama; by sons Edward Lee McBeth of Maybank, Texas, Thomas Lee McBeth of Carlsbad, Terri Glenn McBeth, Scotty Ray McBeth and Danny Lynn McBeth, all of Los Angles, as well as brothers Tom and Donnie, both of Lovington.

He was preceded in death by his parents, T.L. and Beaulah McBeth, a son Billy LaVern McBeth and a brother.

Chapel of Hope Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Daniel Snell
Services are pending at Bethany Funeral Home for Daniel Snell of Hobbs. Daniel, 14, died Saturday at Nor-Lea General Hospital in Lovington.

Ruby Enda Fonda
Funeral services are pending for Ruby Enda Fonda, 74, of Hobbs at Calvary Memorial Funeral Home.
Mrs. Fonda died Jan. 26 at Lea Regional Medical Center. She was born on Sept. 10, 1927, in Edmonson, Kent.
Survivors include five children: Otis Fonda, New Albany, Ind.; Robert Edward Fonda, Sugar Grove, Va.; Larry Allen Fonda, Big Spring, Texas; Peggy E. Goetz, Hobbs and Alice Vargas, Big Spring.

Barbara C. Dobbins

Mrs. Dobbins, 69, died on Friday, Jan. 26.
She was born Dec. 22, 1931.
Mrs. Dobbins is survived by a daughter, Soraya Smith of Las Cruces.

Era Matthews
Funeral services have already been held for former Hobbs resident Era Matthews of Farwell, Texas.
Mrs. Matthews, 82, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, at Farwell Convalescent Center.
She was born Feb. 23, 1918, in Dora to Cora and Mather Samuel Gresham.
Mrs. Matthews grew up in Dora and graduated from Dora High School in 1936. She attended Eastern New Mexico Junior College in Portales for two years.
She worked as a secretary at the credit union in Clovis for a number of years, and was later employed by Blind Machinery in Clovis.
She married George Matthews in 1950 and they moved to Earth, Texas, where she worked at a gas plant. During the 1970s she moved to Hobbs where she worked for an oil company and later opened a health food store which she operated until 1990.
Mrs. Matthews is survived by a brother, Junior Gresham of Portales; and two sisters, Calliebelle Bradford of Neoshow, Mo., and Edith Luce of Friona, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Cora and Mather Samuel Gresham; a brother, J.E. Gresham; and a sister, Ethel Fullerton.

Clarification
Funeral Services for Bess Miller of Midland will be held at 2 p.m. today at First Baptist Church in Hobbs. The Rev. Keeney Dickenson of Eunice will officiate.

H.M. Callender
Graveside services for H.M. Callender of Midland will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 27, at Prairie Haven Memorial Cemetery in Hobbs.
Mr. Callender, 72, died on Sunday, Jan. 21.
He was born on Feb. 13, 1928, in Electra, Texas, to Morgan and Beulah Perl Callender.
Mr. Callender lived in Hobbs before moving to Midland in 1983. He worked for Cactus Drilling and Exeter for more than 30 years.
Mr. Callender is survived by his seven children, Ethel Marie Moon of Apple Valley, Calif., Brenda Joyce Mendoza of New Colony, Texas, Patricia Ann Crossland of Hobbs, Howard Lee of Stanton, Texas, Artie Alton of Greenwood, Texas, Gary Lee of Hobbs and Benetta Leigh Callender of Odessa; 18 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mattie Ethel Callender; and a brother, Bob Callender.

Charlotte Conner
EUNICE - Services for Charlotte Conner of Eunice will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 27, at First Baptist Church. The Rev. Daniel Miller will officiate. Burial will follow at Brunson Memorial Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Calvary Funeral Home.
Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. today. The family will greet friends from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home. Visitation will also take place from 9-11 a.m. on Saturday.
Mrs. Conner, 81, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, in Lubbock.
She was born on July 20, 1919, on the White Earth Indian Reservation in Minnesota.
She and her husband moved to Eunice in 1979 from Folsom, Calif. She was a homemaker and an active member of the Becker County Historical Society of Minnesota. She was affiliated with the Lutheran church.
Mrs. Conner is survived by two sons, James M. Conner Jr. of Eunice and Jack M. Conner of Hobbs; a daughter, Patricia Louise Metke of Roseville, Calif.; two brothers, Russell Hanson of Fargo, N.D., and Gordon Hanson of Albany, Calif.; two sisters, Avis Krogh of Redding, Calif., and Maloria Mausseth of Lemon Grove, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, James M. Conner Sr. in 1987.
Memorial donations may be made to the Eunice Senior Citizens.
