Ruby O. Poynor

GIG HARBOR, Wash. - Services for former Hobbs resident Ruby Opal Poynor will be held Thursday, July 5, at Haven of Rest Chapel in Gig Harbor under the direction of Haven of Rest funeral home.

Burial will follow at Haven of Rest Memorial Park.

Mrs. Poynor, 88, died Sunday, July 1, in Olympia, Wash. She was born on Aug. 22, 1912, in Paris, Ark.

Mrs. Poynor lived in Hobbs from 1963-1968.

Survivors include two sons, Billy Poynor, of Poulsbo, Wash., and Bobby James Poynor of Towanda, Kan.; a daughter, Wanda Lee Reaves of Tenino, Wash.; three brothers, Harley and Truman Featherson of Fort Smith, Ark.;. and Orval Featherston of Vancouver; three sisters, Helen Mitcheal of Alma, Ark., Lila Sue Short and Nona Bess Gibbs, both of Greenwood, Ark.; 16 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Emory T. Poynor; two daughters; six grandchildren; one sister; one brother; and her parents.

J.B. Johnson

LUBBOCK - Services for J.B. "Jay" Johnson of Lubbock will be held at 10 a.m. CDT today at the Chapel of Angels Chapel. The Rev. David Wilson will officiate.

Burial will follow in Peaceful Gardens Cemetery under the direction of Chapel of Angels Funeral Home.

Mr. Johnson died Saturday, June 30, at Covenant Medical Center. He was born May 21, 1922, in Wellington, Texas. He married Deanna Stafford on Nov. 30, 1973, in Clovis.

He attended school in Wellington.

Mr. Johnson served in the Navy during World War II in the SS James McPherson Naval Supply Depot and later on the USS Hobby in the Pacific Theater, earning three stars. He was involved with the Philippine Liberation, earning one star. He was also awarded the Good Conduct Medal.

He owned Jay's Garage in Amarillo in the mid-'50s. He managed Briercroft Conoco Station from 1969-1974. In 1974 he owned and operated Johnson Hay and Grain Transportation Service. He worked for Byers Gin in Seminole hauling baled cotton in 1987 and owned and operated Johnson's Glass Recycling until moving to Lubbock and managing Greenbrier Apartments from 1990 until his retirement in February.

In 1962 he was awarded the "Hobbs Knight of the Road" by Hobbs Truck and Trailer Manufacturing Company. He was a member of VFW Post 6721 of Slaton and the First Christian Church of Hobbs.

He is survived by his wife; four sons, James Johnson of Tulsa, Jay Johnson of Amarillo, Lamar Johnson of Nashville and David Lawson of Chattanooga; one daughter, Arlene McGlone of Norman, Okla.; two brothers, Charles Johnson of Amarillo and Larry Johnson of Holly Lake Farms, Texas; two sisters, Ruby Farrar of Amarillo and Jean Brownlow of Wellington; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorial contributions go to the South Plains Ostomy Association or the Southcrest Baptist Church building fund.

Douglas Halkins

Services for Douglas Halkins of Tatum will be held at 2 p.m. today at Smith-Rogers Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Wayne Brazil will officiate.

Burial will follow at Tatum Cemetery.

Mr. Halkins, 66, died Sunday, July 1, at Nor-Lea General Hospital. He was born April 27, 1935, in Mobedy, Texas.

Mr. Halkins was a longtime resident of Tatum.

He is survived by three daughters, Cindy Allstatt of Lovington, Sondra Catlin of The Colony, Texas, and Delores Thompson of Abilene, Texas; two sisters, Alene Halford of Tatum and Jean Dutton of Los Angeles; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Gloria Noble

Services for Gloria Noble of Hobbs are pending with Chapel of Hope Funeral Home.

Mrs. Noble, 60, died Friday, June 29, at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock. She was born March 27, 1941.

She is survived by her husband, Willie Noble.

Celso M. Ramirez

Services for Celso M. Ramirez of Hobbs will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 3, at St. Helena Catholic Church. The Rev. Jose Reyes will officiate.

Burial will follow at Prairie Haven Memorial Park.

Visitation will be held from 1-9 p.m. Monday, July 2, at Calvary Memorial Funeral Home. A prayer vigil will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home chapel.

Mr. Ramirez, 69, died Friday, June 29, at Lea Regional Medical Center. He was born Nov. 9, 1931, in Coyame, Chihuahua, Mexico. He married Ofelia Flores.

Mr. Ramirez attended St. Helena Catholic Church. He moved to Hobbs four years ago from El Porvenir, Districto Bravo, Chihuahua, Mexico. He worked as a barber for 50 years.

He is survived by his wife of the home; three sons, Ismael Ramirez of El Porvenir and Jesus Ramirez and Ernesto Ramirez, both of Hobbs; three daughters, Rosa Ramirez of Chihuahua and Martha Bueno and Maria Isela Arreola, both of Hobbs; three sisters, Graciela Ramirez Gomez and Esperanza Rivera, both of Albuquerque, and Fedela Fuentes of Odessa; two brothers, Gabino Ramirez of Odessa and Octavio Ramirez of El Paso; two uncles; 18 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Elray Berryhill

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Services for Elray Berryhill of Charleston, formerly of Hobbs, were held at Carolina Memorial Gardens in Charleston. Services were under the direction of Greenridge Road Chapel.

Mrs. Berryhill, 75, died Tuesday, June 12. She was born Feb. 13, 1926, in Brownfield, Texas, to Claude Jackson and Gertrude Waldron Jackson. She was a retired banking loan processor and a graduate of Hobbs High School.

Mrs. Berryhill lived in Hobbs for about 60 years, moving to South Carolina 10 years ago. While in Hobbs she worked at First National Bank and ICX.

She is survived by a daughter, Debbie B. Beach of North Charleston, S.C.; a son, Don Berryhill of Espanola; two brothers, Roy W. Jackson of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and Claude Jackson Jr. of Woodland, Wash.; one sister, Margaret Callis of Houston; six grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Shelby D. Crossland

Services for Shelby Don Crossland of Hobbs will be held at 2 p.m. today at New Life Fellowship Church. The Rev. Jerry Phillips will officiate. Services are under the direction of Chapel of Hope Funeral Home.

Burial will follow at Prairie Haven Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 8 a.m.-noon today.

Shelby, 5, died Thursday, June 27, at University Medical Center in Lubbock. She was born June 14, 1996, in Hobbs.

She is survived by her parents, Jerry and Carol Crossland of Hobbs; one sister, Kelsey Lee Crossland of Hobbs; her paternal grandmother, Bonnie Crossland of Hobbs; her maternal grandmother, Doris McCrummen of Hobbs; and several aunts and uncles.

Shelby was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, her paternal grandfather and two uncles.

Melbourne C. King

LOVINGTON - Services for Melbourne C. King of Lovington will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, July 2, at First Presbyterian Church of Lovington. The Rev. Lewis Wilkins will officiate. Services are under the direction of Smith-Rogers Funeral Home.

Burial will follow at 4 p.m. Monday at Resthaven Memorial Park in Midland.

Mr. King, 85, died Thursday, June 28, at his home. He was born Feb. 25, 1916, in Oklahoma. He married Jerry Withrow Coffman on April 16, 1983, in Lovington.

Mr. King was a member of First Presbyterian Church and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He retired from Phillips Petroleum after 34 years.

Mr. King is survived by his wife of Lovington; a daughter, Carol Jean Howell of Franklin, Tenn.; a stepdaughter, Chaney Cay Rogers of Lovington; a stepson, Chris Coffman of Pottsboro, Texas; a brother, Jay King of College Station, Texas; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Jayrmyah Blake

Services for Jayrmyah Blake of Hobbs are pending with Bethany Funeral Home.

The 2-month-old infant died Thursday, June 28, at Lea Regional Medical Center.

Visitation will be held from 1-5 p.m. Sunday, July 1, at the funeral home.

Shelby D. Crossland

Services for Shelby Don Crossland of Hobbs will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 30, at New Life Fellowship Church. The Rev. Jerry Phillips will officiate. Services are under the direction of Chapel of Hope Funeral Home.

Burial will follow at Prairie Haven Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. today and from 8 a.m.-noon Saturday.

Shelby, 5, died Thursday, June 27, at University Medical Center in Lubbock. She was born June 14, 1996, in Hobbs.

Shelby would have been attending Stone Elementary School as a kindergarten student.

She is survived by her parents, Jerry and Carol Crossland of Hobbs; one sister, Kelsey Lee Crossland of Hobbs; her maternal grandmother, Bonnie Crossland of Hobbs; her paternal grandmother, Doris McCrummen of Hobbs; and several aunts and uncles.

Shelby was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, her paternal grandfather and two uncles.

Connie Walstad

Services for Connie Walstad of Hobbs will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 30, at First Methodist Church. The Rev. J. Gorton Smith will officiate. Services are under the direction of Griffin Funeral Home.

Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery. The body will lie in state from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. today and from 8-9:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Walstad, 83, died Tuesday, June 26, in Hobbs. She was born Feb. 17, 1918, in Paragould, Ark. She married Jack Walstad on Jan. 10, 1948.

Mrs. Walstad was a nationally recognized artist with works in many private and public collections. She worked in watercolors, acrylic and mixed media in her portrayal of contemporary realism. She and her husband moved to Hobbs in 1954.

Mrs. Walstad is survived by her husband of the home; one son, Mike Walstad of Ruidoso; two daughters, Diane Murrell of Oklahoma City and Martha Livingston of Houston; 10 grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Walstad was preceded in death by one son, Bill Cannon; and one grandson.

Memorial contributions may be sent to First United Methodist Church fund.

Alexandra M. Savage Nix

Graveside services for Alexandra McKay Savage Nix of Hobbs will be held at 11 a.m. today at Babyland in Prairie Haven Cemetery. The Rev. Alfred Alexander will officiate. Services are under the direction of Chapel of Hope Funeral Home.

The infant was born and died Tuesday, June 26, at Lea Regional Medical Center.

She is survived by her mother, Lashondra Savage of Hobbs; her father, Michael Hodge of Hobbs; one brother, Michael A. Hodge Jr.; one sister, AaLiyah Hodge; her maternal grandparents, Leon and Joanne Nix of Hobbs; her paternal grandparents, Ernest and Verna Jean Hodge of Hobbs; and several cousins.

Angel J. Herrera-Cofer

Graveside services for Angel Joel Herrera-Cofer will be held at 3 p.m. today at Babyland in Prairie Haven Cemetery. The Rev. LaVoid Ford will officiate. Services are under the direction of Chapel of Hope Funeral Home.

The infant was born and died Thursday, June 27, in Hobbs.

He is survived by his father, Chris H. Cofer of Hobbs; his mother, Stefani M. Herrera-Cofer of Hobbs; three brothers, Joseph Herrera, Nathan Herrera and Lawrence Herrera, all of Hobbs; one sister, Alyssabeth Herrera-Cofer of Hobbs; his maternal grandmother, Angie Herrera of Hobbs; his paternal grandparents, Victor and Mary Reza of Hobbs; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Angel was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Vincent Herrera; and his paternal grandmother, Nancy Cofer.

Thelma Bigham

Services for former Hobbs resident Thelma Bigham of Bosque Farms will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 28, at Northside Baptist Church. Lowell Dean Skaggs and Lanny Neal Spruill, nephews of Mrs. Bigham, will officiate.

Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery. The body will lie in state from 1-8 p.m. today and from 8-9 a.m. Thursday.

Mrs. Bigham, 85, died Saturday, June 23, in Bosque Farms. She was born Feb. 22, 1916, in Rock Bluff, Texas. She married Glennis Bigham on Nov. 26, 1937, in Rock Bluff. He preceded her in death.

Mrs. Bigham was a homemaker and member of First Baptist Church in Bosque Farms.

She moved to Hobbs in 1947 and was a member of Northside Baptist Church from the 1960s until she moved to Bosque Farms.

Survivors include one son, Earl Bigham of Hobbs; one daughter, Ann Ford of Bosque Farms; best friend Loraine Brewer of Hobbs; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Bigham was also preceded in death by two daughters, Carolynn Kay and Sheila Darlynn; five brothers, B.B. Skaggs, Stanley Skaggs, Bill Skaggs, Elmer Skaggs and G.E. "Bud" Skaggs; three sisters, Jewel Grisham, Pearl Spruill and Lillian Thornton; and one grandson.
