Presley S. Roberts
Graveside services and burial for Presley Stark Roberts of Lubbock will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, at Monument Cemetery under the direction of Griffin Funeral Home.
Mr. Roberts, 92, died Thursday, Dec. 28, in Lubbock. He was born Oct. 7, 1908, in Lea County at Pearl post office.
He began work at the age of 16 as a chef on luxury yachts. He worked for notable families such as the DuPonts, Vanderbilts and others.
Mr. Roberts traveled the world from 1924-1940, when he went into the U.S. Air Force to serve during World War II.
After the war, he returned to the Roberts Family Ranch, where the original Pearl post office was located.
He ranched with his brothers and sisters until 1990, when he moved to Lubbock.
Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews.
His parents, Pearl and Nathan Roberts; five brothers, James Dean Roberts, Vernon Roberts, Merle Roberts, Nathan T. Roberts and Alton Roberts; and two sisters, Alva Pearl Roberts and Stella R. Peters, preceded him in death.

Clifford C. Turner
Services for Clifford C. Turner of Hobbs will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 5, at Griffin Funeral Home Chapel.
Leon Green will officiate. Burial will follow in Prairie Haven Cemetery.
He will lie in state today from 1-5 p.m. and on Friday until service time.
Mr. Turner, 79, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, at Hobbs Healthcare Center. He was born July 27, 1921, in Louisiana. He married Naomi Coppedge.
He moved to Hobbs in 1954. He worked for McVay Drilling Co. until his retirement.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Rusty Turner of Hobbs and Mitchell Turner of Lubbock; four daughters, Lavada Fulcher and Valita Brown, both of Hobbs, Valeria Clark of North Carolina and Lana Haddock of Arizona; a brother, Tommy Turner of Texas; 15 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
Three brothers, Bill, Hershel and Earl Turner, preceded him in death.

Nona L. Vinson
LOVINGTON - Graveside services and burial for former Lovington resident Nona Lee Vinson of Cheney, Wash., will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Lovington Cemetery under the direction of Smith-Rogers Funeral Home.
Michael Raburn will officiate.
Mrs. Vinson, 88, died Thursday, Dec. 28, in Spokane. She married Floyd Vinson on Aug. 12, 1953, in Big Spring.
She was a Baptist. She was a retired chiropractor and pilot instructor.
Survivors include her husband of the home; a son, Bill Piper of Lubbock; a daughter, Judy Ward of Cheney; eight sisters, Jackie Church of Lubbock, Ruby Rogers, Frances Kizziah, Bobbie Lavash and Maxine Raburn, all of Lovington, Betty Beatty of Roswell and Shirley Hooper-Garcia of Santa Fe; two brothers, Joe Collier of Lovington and Jake Collier of Las Vegas, Nev.; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Her parents, Isom and Lena Collier of Lovington; and two sisters, Lillian Hall and Tommie Ray Collier, preceded her in death.

Andrew R.A. Garcia
LOVINGTON - A Mass of Christian Burial for Andrew Rene Aguilar Garcia of Lovington will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 4, at St. Thomas Catholic Church.
The Rev. Franklin Eichhorst will officiate. Burial will follow in the Lovington Cemetery under the direction of Bethany Funeral Home. Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Andrew, 11, died Sunday, Dec. 31, at Nor-Lea General Hospital. He was born Oct. 8, 1989, in Hobbs.
He was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church. He was a student at Yarbro Elementary School.
Survivors include his parents, Ben and Sandra Garcia of the family home; maternal grandparents, Ramon and Juanita Aguilar of San Antonio; paternal grandparents, Benjamin and Andrea Garcia of Loving; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Bette S. Summers
Bette Sue Summers, a former resident of Hobbs, died Dec. 17 in Tulsa, Okla. She was 74.
She was the mother of Susan McGee Newsom and Michael James McGee, mother-in-law to David Newsom and Jayne Hauck McGee, grandmother of seven and great-grandmother of four.
She was a native of Oklahoma and a resident of Hobbs and Denver City for many years.
Interment was at Memory Gardens Cemetery, Hobbs.
The family asks that donations or a memorial gift be made to Seasons Hospice at 2733 E. 51 St., Suite 150, Tulsa, Okla. 74105.

Pauline Williams
Graveside services and burial for former Lovington resident, Pauline Williams of Hobbs, will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 19, at Prairie Haven Cemetery under the direction of Griffin Funeral Home.
Mrs. Williams, 78, died Monday, Aug. 14, at Country Cottage and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Jan. 30, 1922, in Eastland, Texas.
She married Henry Williams in 1960 in Lamesa, Texas. He preceded her in death.
Survivors include three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Her first husband, Steven Gown; a son, Charles Gown; and a brother, Marine T. Grace, also preceded her in death.

Charlene Olds
LOVINGTON - Memorial services for Charlene Olds of Lovington will be held at a later date under the direction of Bethany Funeral Home.
Mrs. Olds, 83, died Monday, Aug. 14, at Lovington Good Samaritan Center. She was born Sept. 2, 1916, in Parkersburs, W.Va.
She moved to Hobbs in 1956 and worked for the Hobbs News-Sun for many years. She had worked for Dr. Bruner and Dr. Wyn for numerous years before opening "The Olds Fabric Shop." She also worked as a private seamstress for all of Lea County.
Mrs. Olds was a member of the Needlework Guild and the Rose Society of Hobbs. She was an active member of the Community Players in Hobbs.
She had lived in Lovington for the past 19 years.
Survivors include a daughter, Michelle Reeves of Tucumcari, and a son, Tony Olds of Lubbock, Texas.

Esther White
Services are pending with Chapel of Hope Funeral Home for Esther White of Hobbs.
Mrs. White died Wednesday, Aug. 16, in Albuquerque.
Survivors include a daughter, Shamie Lopez of Albuquerque.

Everett (E.L.) Coppedge
Services are pending with Chapel of Hope Funeral Home for Everett (E.L.) Coppedge of Hobbs.
Mr. Coppedge, 90, died Thursday, Aug. 17, at his home. He was born May 30, 1910.
Immediate survivors include his wife, Lottie Coppedge, of the home.

Louise Parker
EUNICE - Services are pending with Calvary Funeral Home for Louise Parker of Eunice.
Mrs. Parker, 80, died Thursday, Aug. 17, in Lubbock, Texas. She was born Sept. 2, 1919, in Ballinger, Texas.
Survivors include two sons, Billy Jack Parker of Memphis, Tenn., and Tommy Parker of Hobbs; a brother, V.O. Wade of Big Spring, Texas; and two sisters, Lorraine Wade of Ballinger, Texas, and Marie Wade of Odessa, Texas.

Charlene Olds
LOVINGTON -- Services are pending at ?Bethany Funeral Home for Charlene Olds of Lovington.
Mrs. Olds, 83, died Monday, Aug. 14, at Lovington Good Samaritan Center.

Josie Martinez
Services for Josie Martinez of Hobbs will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 17, at the Christian Center.
The Rev. Randy Sims and the Rev. Ryan Ferguson will officiate. Burial will follow in Prairie Haven Memorial Park.
Visitation will be held from 8 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. Prayer service will follow at 6 p.m. at the Christian Center.
Mrs. Martinez, 55, died Sunday, Aug. 13, at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas. She was born Jan. 30, 1945, in Carlsbad. She married Joe B. Martinez on May 10, 1961, in Carlsbad.
She was a member of the Bethel Assembly of God Church.
Survivors include her husband of the home; her mother, Tomasa Sosa Granger of Carlsbad; a son, George Martinez of Albuquerque; two daughters, Debbie Orosco of Lubbock, and Lorraine Ornelas of Hobbs; six brothers, Gilbert Sosa, Ernesto Sosa, David Sosa, Johnny Sosa, Ruben Sosa and J. Manuel Sosa; eight sisters, Margie Valenzuela, Petra Tovar, Vera Salsberry, Sally Martinez, Delia Doporto, Olivia Jaquez, Velma Carnero and Yolando Deleon; and four grandchildren.
Her father, Manuel Rubio Sosa, preceded her in death on Sept. 20, 1973.

Rhoda P. Williams
Services are pending with Griffin Funeral Home for former Lovington resident, Rhoda Pauline Williams of Hobbs.
Mrs. Williams, 78, died Monday, Aug. 14, at Country Cottage Nursing Home in Hobbs, formerly known as Sunbridge. She was born Jan. 30, 1922, in Eastland, Texas.
Survivors include three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Wesley Reese
Services for Wesley Reese of Silver City, father of Lynda Newman of Hobbs, will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at First United Methodist Church in Silver City.
The Rev. Scott Penrod will officiate. Burial will follow in Cliff-Gila Mesa Cemetery under the direction of Calvary Funeral Home of Eunice.
Mr. Reese, 86, died Saturday, Aug. 11, in Hobbs. He was born Dec. 18, 1913, in Ballinger, Texas. He married Jane Formwalt, who preceded him in death.
He and his wife owned and managed Reese Insurance Services for many years. He worked as a secretary for Kennecott Copper Corporation, retiring in 1974.
Mr. Reese was a member of the Grant County Art Guild, the Black Range Art Association and was active in the Senior Citizens Center of Silver City. He was a Methodist.
Other survivors include two more daughters, Sherry Ward of Jackson, Tenn., and Kathy Clark of Everett, Wash.; a brother, Elton Reese of Caballo Lake; five grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
His parents; and a brother, Shirl Reese, also preceded him in death.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or VistaCare Family Hospice, 1515 Calle Sur, Hobbs, N.M. 88240.

Wesley L. Poynor
RANGER, Texas -- Services for Wesley L. Poynor, brother of Garand "Jack" Poynor of Hobbs, were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 12, at the Eastside Baptist Church in Ranger.
The Rev. Jim Strahan officiated and the Rev. Jerry Speer assisted. Burial followed in the Eastland Cemetery, directed by Edwards Funeral Home of Ranger.
Mr. Poynor, 82, died Thursday, Aug.10, at an Abilene hospital. He was born on June 2, 1918, in Mason County to Dean and Nancy Kiser Poynor. He married Johnnie Mae Murphy on Nov.r 23, 1941 in Abilene.
He graduated from Colony High School in 1934 and worked on the family farm. In 1942, he entered the U.S. Army and served in Europe with the 90th Division in Normandy, the Ardennes and Battle of the Bulge, receiving five Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart with two Oak Leaf Clusters. He was discharged in 1945 as a tech sergeant.
Mr. Poynor returned to Ranger and worked for C.D. Hartnett Grocery Distributors and the Fort Worth Star Telegram. He worked 29 years with the United States Postal Service, retiring in 1979.
He was a member of the Eastside Baptist Church, a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans and American Legion, and a member of and 28-year secretary for the Texas Rural Letter Carriers Association. He was a Little League coach and an umpire for many levels of baseball games.
Other survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Kenneth Poynor and Gary Poynor, both of Abilene; another brother, Dorman "Pee Wee" Poynor of Big Lake; one sister, Ruth Franklin of Ranger; and four grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Pythian Home in Weatherford.

Terry Lee Miles
LOVINGTON - Services for Terry Lee Miles of Hobbs will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, March 7, at Church of God, located at Morris and Dunnam.
The Rev. Gary Williamson will officiate. Burial will follow in Prairie Haven Cemetery under the direction of Bethany Funeral Home.
Mr. Miles, 55, died Wednesday, March 1. He was born Sept. 13, 1944, in Hobbs. He married Mary Katherine McAdams on March 31, 1963, in Hobbs.
He was a lifelong resident of Hobbs and was an active member of the American Legion and Eagles Lodge.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two daughters, Susan Ray of Tularosa and Tammy Rountree of Hobbs; two sons, Charlie Miles of Hobbs and Terry Lynn Miles of Midland, Texas; his parents, Charlie and Ella Mae Miles of Hobbs; a brother, Travis Miles of Hobbs; four sisters, Glenda Miles and Shirley Sapp, both of Hobbs, Mary June Lamineek of Alba, Texas, and Penny Tussy of Dallas, Texas; two granddaughters; one grandson; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mr. Miles will lie in state from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. today at Church of God; from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home; and from 10 a.m. until service time on Monday at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion, 319 E. Dunnam, Hobbs, N.M. 88240.

Josephina S. Martinez
Services are pending with Josephina S. Martinez of Hobbs.
Mrs. Martinez, 55, died Sunday, Aug. 13, at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas. She was born Jan. 30, 1945.
Survivors include her husband, Joe D. Martinez.

William H. Burford
LOVINGTON -- Services for William Hugh "Bill" Burford of Lovington will be held at 10 a.m. today at First United Methodist Church.
The Rev. Roy Elmore will officiate. Burial will follow in Resthaven Cemetery in Lovington under the direction of Bethany Funeral Home.
Mr. Burford, 70, died Saturday, Aug. 12, at Covenant Medical Center. He was born May 11, 1930, in Locust Grove, Okla. He married Joyce Christy in 1954 in Stillwater, Okla.
He was a member of Emmaus Community, Kairos Prison Ministry, Crossings Ministry, Wycliffe Bible Associates and Kiwanis Club.
Survivors include his wife of the home; four children, Steve Burford of Sandia Park, Scott Burford of Davao City, Philippines, Craig Burford of Singapore, and Christy Sanders of Dumas, Texas; a brother, J.D. Burford of Laurel, Mo., a sister, Faith LaFrance of Stillwater, Okla.; and six grandchildren.

Vada Hewett
Graveside services and burial for Vada Hewett of Hobbs will be held at 10 a.m. today at Memory Gardens Cemetery under the direction of Griffin Funeral Home.
The Rev. Gale Trow will officiate.
Mrs. Hewett, 98, died Saturday, Aug. 12, in Hobbs. She was born Jan. 22, 1902, in Kern, Texas. She married James Ellis Hewett in February 1923, in Vernon, Texas. He preceded her in death.
She moved to Hobbs in 1970. She was the owner and manager of Hewett Antiques for 25 years.
Mrs. Hewett was a member of First Baptist Church for many years.
Survivors include two sons, Ray Hewett of Hobbs, and Dr. H.E. Hewett of Farmington and Chandler, Ariz.; a daughter, Dr. Dixie Mayes of Hobbs; a sister, Beulah Nicholson of Wichita Falls, Texas; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
A brother, Luther Cooper; and a sister, Lexie Cooper Waters, also preceded her in death.
Memorial contributiins may be made to one's favorite charity.

Wesley Reese

Funeral services for Wesley Reese, 86, of Silver City, are pending at Calvary Funeral Home in Eunice.

Mr. Reese died Friday, Aug. 11, in Hobbs.

He was born on Dec. 18, 1913, in Gila, N.M.

He is survived by three daughters, Sherry Ward of Jackson, Tenn., Kathy Clark of Everett, Wash., and Lynda Newman of Hobbs; one brother, Elton Reese; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Jerry W. Hodge

LOVINGTON - Funeral services for Jerry Wesley Hodge, 18, of Lovington, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 14, at Hillcrest Baptist Church with the Rev. K.M. McCarthick officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Cemetery under the direction of Bethany Funeral Home.

Mr. Hodge died on Thursday, Aug. 10.

He was born on March 15, 1982, in Hobbs and was a lifelong-resident of Lea County.

A member of Northside Baptist Church, Mr. Hodge graduated from Hobbs High School in May. He also attended Lovington High School and played football and basketball for Tatum High School. Mr. Hodge also enjoyed playing soccer, baseball and golf.

At the time of his death, he had enlisted in the United States Army 101st Airborne division.

Mr. Hodge is survived by his parents, father Jimmy Hodge and stepmother Rose Ann of Lovington; mother Cheryl Foster and stepfather Steve Foster of Las Vegas, Nev.; one brother, J.P. Hodge of Hobbs; two stepsisters, Allison Foster of Las Vegas and Sharla Board of Lovington; two stepbrothers, Lance Foster of Dallas and Kevin Elliott of Hobbs; his grandfather, Charlie Moulder of Atkins, Ark.; and his great-grandmother, Thelma East of Mount Belleview, Texas.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Cheri Hodge, who died in 1990, and grandparents Patty Moulder, Pres and Gladys Hodge, Jerry East and Randolph East.
