Edward D. Cornelius
Wellsville, NY
Edward D. Cornelius, 72, of 941 Stonedam Road, died on Thursday May 11, 2006 shortly after arrival at Jones Memorial Hospital. He was born on March 4, 1934 in the Town of Willing to Richard and Mildred Latten Cornelius. On June 20, 1964 in Wellsville he married Ruth Sherman who survives. Edward was a life long resident of this area. He had worked for several companies and had retired from the Worthington Corporation in 1984. He was a life member of both the Alma and Whitesville Rod and Gun Clubs and a member of the NRA. He loved the outdoors including hunting, fishing and competition shoots. Surviving besides his wife: a daughter Sheryl Lafferty of Wellsville; 7 sons, Roger(Shelly) Cornelius of Oswego, Terry(Kim) Cornelius of Rushville, OH, Randy (Lynn) Cornelius of Alma, Stephen (Eileen) Cornelius of Buffalo, Robert (Jeanett) Cornelius of Wellsville, Ron (Valerie) Cornelius of Coudersport, PA., Gunnery Sergeant Don (Maggie) Cornelius serving in the US Marines in Yakima, WA.; 16 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; a brother Eugene (Marilyn) Cornelius of Wellsville and a sister Anita (Henry) Graham of Tioga, PA as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife Darla; 2 brothers Fred Cornelius and Gerald Cornelius; a great granddaughter and a son in law Bill Lafferty. Friends are invited to call on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm in the J.W. Embser Sons F. H. in Wellsville. A funeral service will be held on Monday at 2 pm in the funeral home with Ralph Eastlack presiding. Burial will be in YorksCorners Cemetery and memorials may be made to the American Caner Society.

Daniel M. Green Jr.
Wellsville, NY
Daniel M. Green Jr., 36, of 134 Scott Avenue, died unexpectedly on Tuesday August 1, 2006. He was born on August 7, 1969 in Wellsville the son of Daniel M. and Ronica (Kellog) Greene Sr. Danny was a 21 year employee of D & J Body Shop in Wellsville. He is survived by his parents Dan & Paula Greene of Wellsville, 2 children, Daniel M. Greene III and Taylor I. Greene both at home, 4 sisters, Amy Greene of San Antonio, Texas, Linda Greene and Lisa Muska both of Wellsville and Jodi Lloyd of Rochester, 2 step brothers, Scott and Brad Watson both of Wellsville and several nieces & nephews. He was predeceased by his mother Ronica M. Greene on January 3, 2001. A memorial service will be planned for a later date. Memorial suggestions include The Wellsville All Sports Booster Club % of Voni Walker, Treasurer 23 W. State Street Wellsville, NY 14895. Arrangements are under the direction of the J. W. Henry Gabriel
Henry Gabriel, of Greenwood, New York, 89, died Saturday, August 12, 2006 at the Wellsville Manor Care Center. He was born on September 17th, 1916 in Los Angeles, California, the son of Frank and Theresa Marie (Celenza) Gabriel. On March 23, 1948 he married Rosa B. Steele of Iaeger,West Virginia, who survives.Henry attended various seamanship schools and graduated from the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut and received a commission in the Merchant Marines. He received a federal license as a marine engineer in steam and diesel engines. He was in the maritime service years before World War II and throughout the war and served in both the Atlantic and Pacific theatres. Henry resigned his commission in 1946 and then moved to Iaeger, West Virginia where he owned and operated Peoples Drug Store with his wife, Rosa, for many years. Afterwards, the family moved to Brooklyn for 3 years where Henry was in real estate. In 1953, they moved to Greenwood, New York and started the BelleRoseMotel before moving to Wellsville, New York in 1959 where he owned and operated the Wellsville Motel for more than twenty years, retiring in August 1979.Henry was a retired member of the Marine Engineers Benevolent Association and a former member of the Iaeger, W.Va. and Wellsville, NY Rotary Clubs. He was a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International. He sponsored the Henry and Rosa Gabriel Scholarships for local schools including Wellsville Central High, GreenwoodHigh School, and Alfred State College. He was predeceased by four brothers, Dr. Peter Gabriel, Nicholas Gabriel, Dr. Daniel Gabriel, and Michael Gabriel. Surviving besides his wife are five children, Robert Gabriel of Newark, New York, Theresa (Makis) Messoloras of California, Diane (George) Fogarty of Coral Springs, Florida, Darrell Gabriel of Caledonia, New York, and Susan (Mark) Lochner of Ontario, New York; As well as nine grandchildren, Jason Gabriel, Irene Messoloras, Demetra Messoloras, Nicholas Messoloras, Rachelle Lochner, Melissa Lochner, Dionne Fogarty, Danielle Fogarty, Danise Fogarty and two great grandchildren, Sara Gabriel and Michael Dalo and three sister-in-laws, Susan Gabriel, Mary Gabriel, and Anne Gabriel.Flowers are gratefully declined. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Rotary Club of Wellsville, P.O. Box 391, Wellsville, NY 14895. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, August 16th at the Embser Funeral Home, 34 West State Street in Wellsville where the funeral will be held on August 17th at 11:00 am with the Rev. Don Mosley presiding. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery.

Vivian L. ‘Viv” Duell

Vivian L. ‘Viv” Duell, of Fords Brook Road North Branch, passed away on Sunday January 2, 2005 at Jones Memorial Hospital. On May 22, 1925 he was born to Mark and Lillian Hunt Duell. In 1945 in Wellsville he married the former Ella Bessette who survives him.Viv graduated from WellsvilleHigh School in 1943 and entered the US Navy serving until 1945. In 1950 he moved to Rochester and worked for General Motors retiring in 1977. In 1983 he and his wife moved back to Fords Brook North Branch, his childhood home. Viv became involved with the Moose Lodge 601 in Wellsville serving in all its offices, Moose Legion International and past president and achieved the Pilgrim Degree of Merit in Chicago,Ill. He was a member of the Elks Lodge # 1489, V.F.W. Post # 2530 and a 46 year member of the American Legion including Post # 702. Viv loved to hunt and will be remembered for being a kind and good hearted man that would do anything for you. Surviving besides his wife: a son Thomas [Mary Ellen] Duell of San Jose, CA., a daughter Nancy [Lawrence] Sennett of Ocala,FL.; 5 grandsons and 5 great grandsons; a step brother Louie Freeman; several cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by: a son Michael A. Duell ; 3 brothers Victor, Vince and Vaughn Duell; 4 step brothers Harold, Donald, Howard and Ralph Freeman. Friends may call at the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home in Wellsville on Wednesday from 2-4 & 7-9pm. A Funeral Service with full military honors will held on Thursday at 2pm in the Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Wellsville Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

Marie G. Smith, a former resident of Wellsville, passed away on December 31, 2004 at Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, Florida. She was born in Warsaw and moved to St. Petersburg in 1976 from Wellsville. She currently worked as a realtor with Coldwell Banker Real Estate in St. Petersburg. Marie was a member of St. Peter’s Cathedral; current President of the Lady Elks Aux.; Board of Realtors member; Beta Sigma Phi member; American Legion Aux. member and a Red Hat Society member all of St. Petersburg. Survivors include: 4 sons, Robert H. Gardner of Saranac Lake, NY., Stephen Gardner of San Francisco, CA., Donald Gardner of Amarillo, TX., and Brian Gardner of Wellsville, NY.; 3 daughters, Cheryl Andrews of St. Petersburg, FL., Sandra La Crone of Amarillo, TX. and Mary Ruch of Almond, NY.; a sister, Wilma Brigham of St. Petersburg, FL.; a niece, Beth Malcomb of St. Petersburg, FL.; 11 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Friends are invited to call on Tuesday January 11 from 11 am to 1 pm in the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home in Wellsville. The Funeral Service will follow calling hours at 1 pm with Rev. Anna Shirey presiding. Burial will be in Maple Lawn Cemetery in Friendship.

Jane Margaret Fitzgerald Cook

Jane Margaret Fitzgerald Cook, of 206 Stevens Street, passed away on January 4, 2005 at UNCHospital in Chapel Hill, NC following a brief illness. She was born on July 25, 1921 in Rochester, NY the daughter of Garrett and Beatrice (Skuse) Fitzgerald. Jane was raised in Rochester and lived most of her adult life in Wellsville. She had a long and fulfilling life that included raising her family as well as being employed as Assistant Director of Personal at AlfredUniversity prior to her retirement in 1984. Among her many accomplishments, she was extremely proud of earning her BA degree from AlfredUniversity at the age of 67. Her later years involved spending time with her family and friends and volunteering at the area schools. She was a life member the First Congregational Church in Wellsville and continued a close relationship with her church family. She remained very active and enjoyed her daily walks, reading and playing bridge. She is survived by her former husband Michael Cook of Westfield, NY, her children; J. Michael Cook and his wife Gail, Brian Cook and his wife Peggy, Kathy Cook and her husband Mark Hamalainen and Alan Cook and his wife Jamie, all of North Carolina. In addition she leaves behind six Wonderful grandchildren; Kevin, Kim, Garrett, Julia, Margot and Ethan. Friends are invited to call on Friday from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the J. W. Embser Sons Funeral Home Inc. in Wellsville. A memorial service will be on Saturday, January 8th at 11:00 am at the First Congregational Church 289 N. Main Street in Wellsville with Rev. William Jones presiding. Memorial suggestions include the David A. Howe Public Library or the American Diabetes Association.

Mildred U. Weirich

Mildred U. Weirich, 86, Loving Mother, Grandmother, and Friend, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 12, 2005, at the Wellsville Manor Care Center, Wellsville, NY, after a brief illness. Born on August 17, 1918, in Brainerd, MN, she was the daughter of Edwin Grant Hallock and Ida Theresa Tompkins, who preceded her in death. In earlier years, Mildred resided, attended schools, and worked in the Rushford, Delevan, Franklinville, and Belfast areas. On August 17, 1941, in Wellsville, NY, she married Walter D. Weirich, Sr., who preceded her in death on June 13, 1993. During their 52 years of marriage, they made their home in the Wellsville area, residing most of their lives on the South Branch of the Fords Brook Road. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Edward, Willard, and Wendell Hallock, and one sister, Bernice Hoffman.Surviving are a daughter Lois W. (Stuart) Halbert of Mission Viejo, CA, and two sons, Walter D. (Toni) Weirich, Jr. of Rushford, NY, and Wendell E. (Sharon) Weirich, Wellsville, NY; three grandchildren, Andrew J. (AJ) (Sherry) Weirich, Scio, NY, Liana M. (Jeffrey) Joslyn, Wellsville, NY, and David W. Weirich, Rushford, NY; two step great granddaughters of Scio, NY; and several nieces and nephews.In December 1996, Mildred moved to Manor Hills, Wellsville, NY, where she met her dear friend, Thomas Alaimo. In October 2003, she moved to Wellsville Manor Care Center, where she resided until her death. Mildred loved to read, garden, take walks, and care for her dogs. She will be remembered as a loving and caring individual whose life was devoted to her family. Mildred was able to light up a room with her ever-present smile. Her cheerful personality, along with her tender heart, will be missed by everyone who was blessed to have known her. A service for immediate family will be held Monday, January 17, 2005, at the Embser Funeral Home, Wellsville, NY, where Pastor Robin George and Assistant Pastor, Carol Schweigart of the Brookside Wesleyan Church, will preside. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery, Belfast, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the SPCA or the David A. Howe Library of Wellsville, NY.

Marie M. Aldrich

Marie M. Aldrich, 94, formerly of 1981 Stannards Road, passed away on January 15, 2005 at Jones Memorial Hospital. She was born on April 14, 1910 in Olean to Fredrick and Rose McCello Mitchell. Marie has survived her 3 husbands: Leslie A. Behn Sr., Frank W. Barnhart and Edward H. Aldrich. Marie had worked in several businesses in Olean, Hornell, Alfred and Wellsville. She was a Life Member of the Willing Fire Department Auxiliary. She had many talents including knitting, sewing, gardening and watching over her family. Survivors include: 4 sons Leslie [Patricia] Behn of Rochester, Kenneth [Carol] Behn of Andover, Lowell [Gene] Behn of Orchard Park and Robert Barnhart of Wellsville; 4 daughters Doris Baker of Alfred Station, Donna [David] Ford of Scio, Alice [Patrick] Howland of Andover and Barbara Hoagland of Wellsville. 25 grandchildren, 41 great grandchildren and 3 great, great grandchildren; 2 sisters Gertrude Shutt of Rochester and Betty [Owen] Burt of Cuba; several nieces and nephews.She was predeceased by 4 brothers, 6 sisters, a son and a daughter. Friends are invited to call at the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home in Wellsville on Tuesday from 2-4 & 7-9 pm. Her Funeral Service will be on Wednesday at 11 am in the Funeral Home. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery and memorials may be made to either the Willing Fire Department Auxiliary, Wellsville Volunteer Ambulance Corps or to the donor’s choice.
