WELLSVILLE — James Joseph Schaffner, 85, formerly of Wellsville, died Sunday (April 16, 2006).
PAUL S. CANESSA
WELLSVILLE — Paul S. Canessa of Johnson Street passed away Thursday (Feb. 7, 2008) at Jones Memorial Hospital. He was born Dec. 25, 1910, in North Adams, Mass., to Paul and Margaret (Clarke) Canessa. In 1942, in Wellsville, he married Mary Lou Walther, who predeceased him Jan. 14, 2000.
At age 16, Paul began to work on shortwave radios and later graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as an electrical engineer. He had worked at General Electric and was a professor of electrical technology at Alfred University, and he retired in 1971. His memberships include the Immaculate Conception Church, the Elks Lodge No. 1495, the Moose Lodge No. 601, the Knights of Columbus Council 919 of Wellsville and the Olean Assembly Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. Paul was a 30-year-plus financial secretary of the Knights of Columbus and, along with his father-in-law, worked to buy a building for the Knights in Wellsville. In his later years, Paul and Mary Lou spent their winters in Florida, and he enjoyed reading and repairing old clocks.
Survivors include five nieces and nephews and nine great-nieces and great-nephews.
Friends are invited to call from 9-10 a.m. Saturday in the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home, Inc. in Wellsville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Church with Monsignor Vincent Becker as celebrant. Burial will take place in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the charity of the donor’s choice.
