George A. Bates
George A. Bates, 78, of 4479 Hartfield-Centalia Rd., Dewittville,N.Y. 14728, died at 6:45 P.M. Saturday (Jan. 14, 2006) in WCA Hospital.
He was born March 2, 1927 in Killbuck, N.Y., the son of Joshua and Helen Vaughn Bates.
Mr. Bates attended school in Salamanca and at Jamestown Community College.
Prior to retiring in 1997, he had been employed as a supervisor at the Resource Center for 20 years. In earlier years he had worked for the Erie and Baltimore and Ohio Railroads in the Salamanca area.
He was a member of the former Killbuck United Methodist Church, and was a charter and life member of the Killbuck Volunteer Fire Dept.
An avid fan of the Buffalo Bills since their days in the “Rock Pile” stadium, he was a season ticket holder and enthusiastic tail-gater. He was an avid reader, and loved the outdoors and flowers. He loved his family, especially his grandchildren, and his four Bull Terrier dogs: Brink, Jimmy, Jammer, and Jenny.
Surviving are his wife, the former Jessie Hutchison, whom he married June 24, 1945 in Salamanca; a daughter, Lois R. Tumminia and her husband Philip of Venice, Fla.; a son, Thomas A. Bates and his wife Tammy of Industry, Pa.; six grandchildren: Andrew Tumminia and his wife Pamela of Englewood, Fla., Peter Tumminia of Memphis, Tenn., Maria Natiello and her husband Michael of Garrison, N.Y., Meghan Bates of Cedarville, Oh., LCpl. Andrew Bates, U.S.M.C. and his wife Jessica of Jacksonville, N.C., and Joshua Bates of Industry, Pa.; two great granddaughters: Laurel and Johanna Natiello, both of Garrison, N.Y.; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Rev. Daniel Rumfelt, Lutheran Retirement Home chaplin, will officiate at the service.
Memorials may be made to the Prendergast Library Assoc., 509 Cherry St., Jamestown, N.Y. 14701; or to the Bull Terrier Rescue Club of America, c/o Ty and Melenie Whitehair, PO Box 44, Kendall, N.Y. 14476.

Wesley L. Johnson
Wesley L. Johnson, 61, formerly of Jamestown, died at 3:00 A.M. Sunday (Jan. 15, 2006) in the Snyder Memorial Home, Marienville, Pa.
He was born July 26, 1944 in Jamestown, the son of Raymond L. and Genevieve Samuelson Johnson.
A 1963 graduate of Jamestown High School, he had been employed as a pressman at the former Journal Press in Jamestown.
Wesley had formerly been a volunteer with the Joint Neighborhood Project. He enjoyed studying the Civil War and the presidency of Abraham Lincoln, and he loved to fish and hunt.
He is survived by his former wife, Deanna Adsit Johnson; a son, Mark J. Johnson and his wife Debra of Busti; a grandson, Hunter Wesley Johnson of Busti; a sister, Barbara Burkholder of Clymer; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
The funeral will be at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday in Powers, Present & Sixbey Funeral Home. The Rev. Gregory Hager, pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial will be in Holland Cemetery, Clymer.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. today in the funeral home.

Edna Newark
Edna Newark, 80, of Heritage Village Health Care Center, formerly of Tanglewood Manor and 520 Palmer St., died at 7:35 A.M. Friday (Feb. 10, 2006) in WCA Hospital.
She was born Sept. 8, 1925 in Warren County, a daughter of Ralph and Agnes Rudolph Whiteman.
Prior to retiring, she had been employed as a production worker at Anderson Screw Products. In earlier years she had worked at the Park Laundry and Sanitary Wiping Cloth Co.
She had formerly attended the Salvation Army. SHe enjoyed sewing, walking, and working in her flower beds.
She is survived by five sisters: Cecile Van Cise of Spring Creek, Pa., Lois Wike of East Hickory, Pa., Edith Yucha of Warren, Pa., and Donna Swanson of Jamestown; a brother, Donald Whiteman of Girard, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry J. Newark, who died Nov. 24, 1956.
The funeral will be at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday in Powers, Present & Sixbey Funeral Home. Maj. Joseph Pawlowski of the Salvation Army will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery.
The family will recieve friends for one hour prior to the funeral service Tuesday in the funeral home.

The Rev. Hazel A. Bower
The Rev. Hazel A. Bower, 77, of 105 Vega St., went home to be with the Lord at 12:01 P.M. Saturday (Feb. 11, 2006) in Heritage Green Health Care Center.
She was born Jan. 18, 1929 in Marienville, Pa., the daughter of George and Lizbeth Murry Cochrane.
Prior to retiring, she had been the pastor of Open Meadows United Methodist Church.
Hazel was a member of Buffalo Street United Methodist Church. She was formerly active with the Chautauqua County Jail Ministry, and was a former member of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union.
Always one with a green thumb, Hazel could grow anything. (except yellow roses!) She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and sewing.
Surviving are five daughters: Autumn Rae Mazzone, Tammy M. Widmark, Malodie Hebner, and Malesia Flagella, all of Jamestown, and LindaKay Burch of California; four sons: Thomas Cochran of Jamestown, L. Dean Cochran of Ewine, Ky., Larry Cochran of Gulfport, Miss., and Timothy Cochran of Gerry; seventeen grandchildren; and several great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Loyal E. Cochran, who died in 1967; her second husband, The Rev. Clarence F. N. Bower, who died in 1996; three brothers: Roy, Marion, and Charles Cochrane; and a sister, Lilly Rogers.
The funeral will be at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday in Buffalo Street United Methodist Church. Pastor James Franko will officiate. Burial will be in Ross Mills Cemetery.

Berit C. Turnquist
Berit C. Turnquist, 73, of 71 Chapin St., passed peacefully Tuesday morning (Feb. 28, 2006) in Heritage Village Health Care Center.
A resident of the United States since 1953, she was born August 8, 1932 in Filipstad, Sweden, the daughter of Yngve and Elinor Hoij Carlsson. Educated in Sweden, she was proud of attaining her college degree.
Prior to retiring in 2003, she had been employed for 30 years as a teacher’s aide at the Hewes Educational Center in Ashville.
She was a member of Ingjald Lodge 65, Independent Order of Vikings, Thule Lodge VASA Order of America, and the American-Scandinavian Heritage Foundation.
Always a person of great patience, Mrs. Turnquist loved the special needs students at the Hewes Center, and enjoyed following their accomplishments in later years. Although spending time with her kids and grandchildren was her greatest joy, she also loved animals, especially dogs and cats, and enjoyed feeding the ducks at Fransfallet. She was always interested in events in her Swedish homeland, and had a special fondness for her family’s summer cottage there. She was an excellent cook, especially of Swedish cuisine.
She is survived by three sons: Carl Richard Turnquist and his wife Susan of Ashville, J. Petter Turnquist and his wife Robin of Frewsburg, and Michael E. Turnquist of Tafton, Pa.; two daughters: Elisabeth Ann Rankin and her husband Tom, and M. Christina Liuzzo and her husband Andrew, both of Jamestown; ten grandchildren: Brian, Matthew, and Katherine Turnquist, all of Ashville, Ylsa Turnquist, and Carl, Vincent, Andrew, Thomas, and Maria Liuzzo, and Wallace Thomas Rankin, all of Jamestown; a close family friend, Donald Kuropatwa of Tafton, Pa.; her cousins, Gunvor Olsson and Lars Hoij, whom she called her “little sister” and “little brother;” and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and family members, in both the United States and Sweden.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace E. Turnquist, whom she married Dec. 9, 1953 in Filipstad, Sweden, and who died July 23, 2000.
A memorial service will be at 4:00 P.M. Friday in Powers, Present & Sixbey Funeral Home. The Rev. Sam Shreffler, Heritage Village Chaplain, will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. Thursday and for one hour prior to the memorial service Friday in the funeral home. Email condolences may be sent by visiting the website www.presentsixbeyfuneral.com.

Marie G. Lynch
Marie G. Lynch, 88, of the Lutheran Retirement Home, died at 6:30 P.M. Saturday (March 4, 2006) in the facility.
She was born Jan. 14, 1918 in Buffalo, the daughter of James and Anna Fox Murty.
She earned her associates degree from Jamestown Community College in 1978.
Prior to her retirement, she had been employed as a social worker for Eire County.
Mrs. Lynch was a communicant of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lakewood. She was also a former member of the Rosary Society of Sacred Heart Church, and the Lakewood Rod and Gun Club.
She is survived by two sons: Peter J. and George M. Lynch, and by a grandson, Sean Lynch, all of Jamestown.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Lynch, who died Dec. 25, 1973; and by a daughter, Francis Lynch, who died in February, 1945.
A memorial mass will be celebrated at a later date in Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. John the Baptist Cemetery in Alden, N.Y.

John R. "Jack" Healy
John R. “Jack” Healy, 87, of 48 Glidden Ave., West Ellicott, died at 5:07 A.M. Thursday (March 9, 2006) in WCA Hospital.
He was born Oct. 31, 1918 in Greensburg, Pa., the son of Michael and Helen Droskey Healy.
A 1937 graduate of Latrobe (Pa.) High School, Jack was also a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He entered the service in 1941, and completed Basic Training and Wheeled Vehicle School at Fort Knox, Ky. He was then assigned to the 86th Reconnaissance Battalion of the Sixth Armored Division, and served in the European Theater of Operations. He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal, and was discharged in 1945 with the rank of Technical Sergeant.
Prior to retiring in 1982, he was employed as a first tester for 36 years at the former Blackstone Corporation. In earlier years he had worked for the Bi-State Ice Cream Co. of Bradford, Pa, transferring to Jamestown in 1939 to manage the former Bicco Ice Cream Store at the corner of East Second Street and Hopkins Avenue.
He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lakewood, and was a member of John W. Tiffany Post 53 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Lakewood Memorial Post 1286 American Legion, and the War Veterans Recreation Club, where he was a past president and had served as a director.
Always one with a tremendous sense of humor, he enjoyed engaging others in conversation. He took pride in having completed a large remodeling project to his home, and always had a project underway, even in his later years. He liked sports of all kinds, but considered football to be his number one favorite.
Jack is survived by a son, Michael David Healy; two grandchildren: Jonathan Michael Smith Healy and Kaitlin Marie Healy, all of Jamestown; and by a niece, Lois Ann Healy of Greensburg, Pa.
He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Betty Jane Meurer, whom he married March 8, 1942 in Louisville, Ky.; a son, Thomas Richard Healy, who died in 1991; and by a brother, Joseph Healy.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at a later date. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery.

Daniel F. Johnson, Jr.
Daniel F. Johnson, Jr., 43, of 27A Gifford Ave., Celoron, died at 7:40 A.M. Friday (March 10, 2006) in Heritage Park Health Care Center.
He was born Dec. 22, 1962 in Jamestown, the son of Donald F. Johnson, Sr. and the late Irene E. Brosius Johnson.
In addition to his father of Jamestown, he is survived by two sisters: Martha L. Butcher of Gerry and Kim A. Clark of Jamestown; three brothers: William R. Johnson of Greenhust, and Fred E. and James K. Johnson, both of Jamestown; two uncles: Thomas Whitmore of Dunkirk and David Brosius of Jamestown; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother and his grandparents.
A memorial service will be at 1:00 P.M. Saturday March 18 at 27A Gifford Ave., Celoron. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery.

Mary Lou Berguist Haldeman
Mary Louise Bergquist Haldeman, 83, of 1487 W-J Blvd., died at 6:00 A.M. Tuesday (March 14, 2006) in her home.
She was born Sept. 18, 1922 in Jamestown, a daughter of Clarence Hjalmar Bergquist and Lucy Elizabeth Tuxford Bergquist.
Mrs. Haldeman was a 1940 graduate of Jamestown High School, and completed the five year Bachelor of Science in registered nursing degree from Baldwin-Wallace College, in conjunction with her nurses training at St. Lukes Hospital School of Nursing in Cleveland, Ohio.
In earlier years she had been employed as a registered nurse at WCA Hospital.
She was a member of the Mozart Club, the Marvin Community House, Fenton Historical Society, Roger Tory Peterson Institute, Jamestown Audubon Society, the American-Scandinavian Heritage Foundation, Thule Lodge Vasa Order of America, the American Association of University Women, and was a life member of Diana Lodge Independent Order of Vikings. She had also been active with the Rogers School Parent-Teachers Association, was a long time volunteer at the WCA Hospital Snack Shop, and for many years had managed the gift shop at the former Jamestown General Hospital. She had also been a member of the former Stillwater Evangelical United Brethren Church, where she was active with the Heather Circle.
She is survived by a son, Dr. Mark Tuxford Haldeman of Piqua, Ohio; two daughters: Rebecca Louise Haines of Bemus Point, and Bethany Jeanne Haldeman of Jamestown; and two grandchildren: Concetta and Matthew Haldeman, both of Piqua, Ohio.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Max E. Haldeman, whom she married Sept. 9, 1950 at her family’s summer home on Lakeside Drive in Bemus Point, and who died July 7, 2004; and by a brother and sister, twins C. Robert Bergquist and Ruth A. Olson.
A private service will be at the convenience of the family. The Rev. Jeff Silvernail, pastor of St. Timothy Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery.
